Radiologische Untersuchungsmethoden stellen einen zunehmend wichtigen Teil der Ermittlung verschiedenster Analyseinhalte in der Rechtsmedizin dar. In der vorliegenden Studie wird eine automatisierte Bildanalysemethode computertomographischer Schädelkalottenbilder zur geschlechtsspezifischen Altersbestimmung evaluiert. Ziel ist es mit dieser neuen Methode Untersuchungsmöglichkeiten für die Rechtsmedizin zu ermitteln.Es wurden insgesamt 344 Schädelkalotten von 120 Frauen und 224 Männern europäischer Abstammung, welche während des alltäglichen Sektionsbetriebs im Institut für Rechtsmedizin der Justus-Liebig-Universität Gießen, den Leichnamen entnommen wurden, in die Untersuchungen aufgenommen. Das Alter der untersuchten Schädelkalotten lag zwischen drei Monaten und 100 Jahren. Zur Erhebung der Daten wurden die radiologischen Bilder der Kalotten in der Abteilung für Neuroradiologie des Universitätsklinikums Gießen, mit einem hochauflösenden eXplore Locus Ultra Computer Tomographen (eLU) rekonstruiert. Die Bilder wurden an der Bildverarbeitungs- und Bildbetrachtungseinheit, Advantage Workstation , der Version 4.1 für die Messungen vorbereitet und durch eine in der IDL Computersprache für diese Arbeit entwickeltes Programm ausgewertet.Die Dicke und Dichte der Schädelkalotten wurden für beide Geschlechter jeweils in einer Altersgruppe, Radiological imaging represents an increasingly important methodology of many different investigations in forensic medicine. The present study evaluates an automatic image analysis method of CT-scans of skullcaps for gender-specific age determination. The aim of this study was to investigate a potentially new aging methodology for forensic medicine.The study included 344 skullcaps of 120 European women and 224 European men, which were provided by the Department of Forensic Medicine of the Justus-Liebig-University Gießen. Ages of the examined skullcaps ranged between three months and 100 years. To collect the data the radiological scans of the calottes were performed with the high-resolution Computer Tomograph eXplore Locus Ultra (eLU) in the Department of Neuroradiology of the University Hospital Gießen. The scans were processed with the image analysis platform, "Advantage Workstation", version 4.1. They were also evaluated by a program in the computer language IDL, which was developed for this study.The thickness and Hounsfield unit related radiological density of the skullcaps was investigated for both genders, that were separated into two groups according to age. The first group included calottes younger than 20 years and the second group included calottes skulls of the ages 20 years and older. The frontal and occipital parts of the calottes were evaluated separately. For the younger group a positive correlation was found between thickness and age as well as density and age. Due to a small sample size of calottes in this age group, a reasonable approach to age determination could not be assessed. For the older age group (greater than 20 years), no correlation could be found between thickness and age. Yet for the female skullcaps the correlation between density and age was more negative than in male calottes. Another gender dependent difference was found in the variation of the density within the adult skull. It was found that the density variability decreases as function of age for female skulls and that it remains constant for male skulls. The density and the variation of the density were calculated from the mean measured Hounsfield units at different measuring positions of the skull. The correlations between density versus age or the variation of density versus age in the group greater than 20 years were too low to enable an applicable age determination. Altogether, the results point out that the thickness and density measurement of skullcaps, investigated with the used computer program, is not suited for gender-specific age determination in forensic medicine.In this study, the bone thickness distribution of the different subject s skullcaps were investigated by the aid of histogram plots of the frequency of an occurrence of a skull-thickness value against the skull-thickness. What attracted special attention was the finding of highly complex distribution patterns, which showed distinct potentially indi-vidual differences in the group of adult skulls. On the basis of this eventually indeed individual signature of the skull the setup of a new biometric identification method for unknown subjects will be evaluated in future studies.
