A multilayer surface detector for ultracold neutrons (UCNs) is described. The top $^{10}$B layer is exposed to the vacuum chamber and directly captures UCNs. The ZnS:Ag layer beneath the $^{10}$B layer is a few microns thick, which is sufficient to detect the charged particles from the $^{10}$B(n,$\alpha$)$^7$Li neutron-capture reaction, while thin enough so that ample light due to $\alpha$ and $^7$Li escapes for detection by photomultiplier tubes. One-hundred-nm thick $^{10}$B layer gives high UCN detection efficiency, as determined by the mean UCN kinetic energy, detector materials and others. Low background, including negligible sensitivity to ambient neutrons, has also been verified through pulse-shape analysis and comparisons with other existing $^3$He and $^{10}$B detectors. We report an experimental determination of the dispersion of the soft phonon mode along [1,0,0] in uranium as a function of pressure. The energies of these phonons increase rapidly, with conventional behavior found by 20 GPa, as predicted by recent theory. New calculations demonstrate the strong pressure (and momentum) dependence of the electron-phonon coupling, whereas the Fermi-surface nesting is surprisingly independent of pressure. This allows a full understanding of the complex phase diagram of uranium, and the interplay between the charge-density wave and superconductivity.

We present an angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy study of the electronic structure of SnTe, and compare the experimental results to ab initio band structure calculations as well as a simplified tight-binding model of the p-bands. Our study reveals the conjectured complex Fermi surface structure near the L-points showing topological changes in the bands from disconnected pockets, to open tubes, and then to cuboids as the binding energy increases, resolving lingering issues about the electronic structure. The chemical potential at the crystal surface is found to be 0.5eV below the gap, corresponding to a carrier density of p =1.14x10^{21} cm^{-3} or 7.2x10^{-2} holes per unit cell. At a temperature below the cubic-rhombohedral structural transition a small shift in spectral energy of the valance band is found, in agreement with model predictions., Comment: 4 figures

We survey some prospects of identifying further in-medium modifications of hadrons in a strongly interacting medium with respect to ongoing experiment series of the HADES Collaboration and planned experiments of the CBM Collaboration at FAIR. Cavity cooling of an atom works best on a cyclic optical transition in the strong coupling regime near resonance, where small cavity photon numbers suffice for trapping and cooling. Due to the absence of closed transitions a straightforward application to molecules fails: optical pumping can lead the particle into uncoupled states. An alternative operation in the far off-resonant regime generates only very slow cooling due to the reduced field-molecule coupling. We predict to overcome this by using a strongly driven ring-cavity operated in the sideband cooling regime. As in the optomechanical setups one takes advantage of a collectively enhanced field-molecule coupling strength using a large photon number. A linearized analytical treatment confirmed by full numerical quantum simulations predicts fast cooling despite the off-resonant small single molecule - single photon coupling. Even ground state cooling can be obtained by tuning the cavity field close to the Anti-stokes sideband for sufficiently high trapping frequency. Numerical simulations show quantum jumps of the molecules between the lowest two trapping levels, which can be be directly and continuously monitored via scattered light intensity detection.

Open charm mesons (pseudo-scalar and scalar as well as axial-vector and vector) propagating or resting in nuclear matter display an enhanced sensitivity to the chiral condensate. This offers new prospects to seek for signals of chiral restoration, in particular in p-A and p-bar-A reactions as envisaged in first-round experiments by the CBM and PANDA collaborations at FAIR. Weinberg type sum rules for charming chiral partners are presented, and the distinct in-medium modifications of open-charm mesons are discussed. Based on a quasiparticle model for \beta stable and electrically neutral deconfined matter we address the mass-radius relation of pure quark stars. The model is adjusted to recent hot lattice QCD results for 2 + 1 flavors with almost physical quark masses. We find rather small radii and masses of equilibrium configurations composed of cold deconfined matter, well distinguished from neutron or hybrid stars., Comment: Dec. 2008. 19 pp

Within a phenomenological quasiparticle model, the quark mass and temperature dependence of the QCD equation of state is discussed and compared with lattice QCD results. Ultraviolet-photoemission (UPS) measurements and supporting specific-heat, thermal-expansion, resistivity and magnetic-moment measurements are reported for the magnetic shape-memory alloy Ni$_2$MnGa over the temperature range $100K < T < 250K$. All measurements detect clear signatures of the premartensitic transition ($T_\mathrm{PM}\sim 247K$) and the martensitic transition ($T_\mathrm{M} \sim 196K$). Temperature-dependent UPS shows a dramatic depletion of states (pseudogap) at $T_\mathrm{PM}$ located 0.3eV below the Fermi energy. First-principles electronic structure calculations show that the peak observed at 0.3eV in the UPS spectra for $T > T_\mathrm{PM}$ is due to the Ni-d minority-spin electrons. Below $T_\mathrm{M}$ this peak disappears, resulting in an enhanced density of states at energies around 0.8eV. This enhancement reflects Ni-d and Mn-d electronic contributions to the majority-spin density of states and is accompanied by significant reconstruction of the Fermi surface.

The equation of state (EOS) is of utmost importance for the description of the hydrodynamic phase of strongly interacting matter in relativistic heavy-ion collisions. Lattice QCD can provide useful information on the EOS, mainly for small net baryon densities. The QCD quasiparticle model provides a means to map lattice QCD results into regions relevant for a variety of experiments. We report here on effects of collectives modes and damping on the EOS. A phenomenological quasiparticle model is surveyed for 2+1 quark flavors and compared with recent lattice QCD results. Emphasis is devoted to the effects of plasmons, plasminos and Landau damping. A quasi-particle model is employed to derive from available lattice QCD calculations an equation of state useable in hydrodynamical simulations of the expansion stage of strongly interacting matter created in ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions. Various lattice results give an astonishing agreement of the pressure as a function of energy density at large energy densities supposed the pseudo-critical temperature is in the range $170 \pm 15$ MeV, while in the transition region the equation of state is not yet well constrained. Therefore, one can construct a family of equations of state by bridging the uncertain region from the uniquely given high-energy density region part to a hadronic equation of state by suitable interpolation together with the extrapolation to non-zero baryon density by means of the quasi-particle model. We present a series of tests of the model, discuss the chiral extrapolation and the role of Landau damping. We construct a family of equations of state within a quasiparticle model by relating pressure, energy density, baryon density and susceptibilities adjusted to first-principles lattice QCD calculations. The relation between pressure and energy density from lattice QCD is surprisingly insensitive to details of the simulations. Effects from different lattice actions, quark masses and lattice spacings used in the simulations show up mostly in the quark-hadron phase transition region which we bridge over by a set of interpolations to a hadron resonance gas equation of state. Within our optimized quasiparticle model we then examine the equation of state along isentropic expansion trajectories at small net baryon densities, as relevant for experiments and hydrodynamic simulations at RHIC and LHC energies. We illustrate its impact on azimuthal flow anisotropies and transverse momentum spectra of various hadron species.

Continuing the photoemission study begun with the work of Opeil et al. [Phys. Rev. B \textbf{73}, 165109 (2006)], in this paper we report results of an angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) study performed on a high-quality single-crystal $\alpha$-uranium at 173 K. The absence of surface-reconstruction effects is verified using X-ray Laue and low-energy electron diffraction (LEED) patterns. We compare the ARPES intensity map with first-principles band structure calculations using a generalized gradient approximation (GGA) and we find good correlations with the calculated dispersion of the electronic bands.

Using a variety of thermodynamic measurements made in magnetic fields, we show evidence that the diffusionless transition (DT) in many shape-memory alloys is related to significant changes in the electronic structure. We investigate three alloys that show the shape-memory effect (In-24 at.% Tl, AuZn, and U-26 at.% Nb). We observe that the DT is significantly altered in these alloys by the application of a magnetic field. Specifically, the DT in InTl-24 at.% shows a decrease in the DT temperature with increasing magnetic field. Further investigations of AuZn were performed using an ultrasonic pulse-echo technique in magnetic fields up to 45 T. Quantum oscillations in the speed of the longitudinal sound waves propagating in the [110] direction indicated a strong acoustic de Haas-van Alphen-type effect and give information about part of the Fermi surface., Comment: 5 figures

Valence-band ultraviolet photoemission spectroscopy (UPS) at 173K and 6p core-level X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS) at room temperature were performed on a high quality uranium single crystal. Significant agreement is found with first-principles electronic band-structure calculations, using a generalized gradient approximation (GGA). In addition, using Low Energy Electron Diffraction (LEED) for the (001) surface, we find a well-ordered orthorhombic crystallographic structure representative of the bulk material.

We compare our quasi-particle model with recent lattice QCD results for the equation of state at finite temperature and baryo-chemical potential. The inclusion of the QCD critical end point into models is discussed. The superconductivities of samples prepared by several procedures were found to degrade under ambient environment. The degradation mechanism was studied by measuring the change of surface chemical composition of dense MgB2 pellets (prepared by hot isostatic pressure, HIPed) under atmospheric exposure using X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS). Results showed that samples with poor connectivity between grains and with smaller grain sizes degrade with time when exposed to ambient conditions. In these samples, the Tc did not change with time, but the superconducting transition became broader and the Meissner fraction decreased. In contrast, our well-sintered and the HIPed samples remained stable for several months under ambient condition. The degradation was found to be related to surface decomposition as observed by XPS. We observed the formation of oxidized Mg, primarily in the form of a Mg hydroxide, the increase of C and O contents, and the reduction of B concentration in the surface layer of MgB2 samples., Comment: 15 pages, 3 figures

We studied the influence of sample preparation and defects in the superconducting properties samples using atomic ratios of Mg:B=1:1 and Mg:B=1:2. Samples were characterized by SEM, and XRD, and the magnetization properties were examined in a SQUID magnetometer. The presence of Mg vacancies was determined by Rietveld analysis. Most of the samples exhibited sharp superconducting transitions with Tcs between 37- 39 K. We found a strong correlation between the crystal strain and the Tc. This strain was related to the presence of Mg vacancies. In addition, results showed that some samples degraded with time when exposed to ambient conditions. In these samples the Tc did not change with time, but the superconducting transition became broader and the Meissner fraction decreased. This effect was only present in samples with poor connectivity between grains and smaller grain sizes. The degradation was related to a surface decomposition as observed by X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy. A Transition Radiation Detector (TRD) has been designed to improve the electron identification and trigger capability of the ALICE experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN. We present results from tests of a prototype of the TRD concerning pion rejection for different methods of analysis over a momentum range from 0.7 to 2 GeV/c.
