Abstract

The depositional evolution and architecture of upper Albian to Turonian carbonate platforms of west central Jordan are reconstructed within this thesis. Therefore, global controlling factors (eustatic sea-level fluctuations, productivity events, orbital forcing) and regional factors ( tectonics, paleogeography, faunal and floral associations of the inner shelf) on platform development are considered. Furthermore, platform evolution and deposits of the study area are compared and discussed with time equivalent data of neighbouring areas on the Arabic plate and in the Tethyan realm. The results of sedimentology, biostratigraphy and facies investigations on washing samples, thin-sections and macrofossils, as well as from quantitative analyses of higher-frequent carbonate cycles are presented in three single articles, which are either published or submitted to international journals.

11. Uranium-enriched horizons refine the stratigraphic framework of Cenomanian-Turonian (Late Cretaceous) strata in central Jordan and northern Tunisia

Abstract

Spektrale Gamma-Ray Messungen wurden an acht Geländeprofilen aus dem Cenoman/Turon (C/T) in Jordanien (6) und Tunesien (2) durchgeführt. Ziel der Studie war es, die spektralen Gamma-Ray Muster in den Profilen zu dokumentieren und zu überprüfen, inwieweit das bestehende bio- und chemostratigraphische Korrelationsgerüst hierdurch weiter verfeinert werden kann. Hierzu wurden die spektralen Gamma-Ray Kurven mit neu gewonnenen und publizierten biostratigraphischen Daten des kalkigen Nannoplankton sowie chemostratigraphischen Kohlenstoffisotopenwerten verglichen. Die untersuchten C/T-Profile enthalten sowohl in Tunesien als auch Jordanien mehrere charakteristische Horizonte, die sich durch erhöhte Urangehalte auszeichnen und in den jeweiligen Nachbarprofilen in ähnlichen stratigraphischen Niveaus anzutreffen sind. Eine Korrelation zwischen dem Urangehalt und dem organischen Kohlenstoffgehalt wurde nicht festgestellt. Die erhöhten Urangehalte könnten mit dem Vorkommen von Phosphoriten in Verbindung stehen. Es wird angenommen, daß die Uran-angereicherten Lagen zuätzliche, synchrone Korrelationshorizonte in den jeweiligen C/T-Abfolgen der beiden Länder darstellen. Eine größermaßstäbliche Korrelation der Uran-angereicherten Lagen zwischen Tunesien und Jordanien konnte hingegen nicht dokumentiert werden.
