We investigated the temporal and spectral features of $\gamma$ Cassiopeiae's X-ray emission within the context of the white dwarf accretion hypothesis. We find that the variabilities present in the X-ray data show two different signals, one primarily due to absorption and the other due to flickering like in non-magnetic cataclysmic variables. We then use this two-component insight to investigate previously un-reported simultaneous XMM and NuSTAR data. The model fitting results find white dwarf properties consistent with optical studies alongside a significant secondary, thermal source. We propose a secondary shock between the Be decretion disk and white dwarf accretion disk as the source. Finally, we analyzed a unique, low-count rate event of the XMM light curve as potential evidence for the white dwarf encountering Be decretion disk structures., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

The Orion Nebula Cluster (ONC) is the closest site of very young ($\sim$ 1 Myrs) massive star formation. The ONC hosts more than 1600 young and X-ray bright stars with masses ranging from $\sim$ 0.1 to 35 $M_\odot$. The Chandra HETGS Orion Legacy Project observed the ONC with the Chandra high energy transmission grating spectrometer (HETGS) for $2.1\,$Ms. We describe the spectral extraction and cleaning processes necessary to separate overlapping spectra. We obtained 36 high resolution spectra which includes a high brilliance X-ray spectrum of $\theta^1$ Ori C with over 100 highly significant X-ray lines. The lines show Doppler broadening between 300 and $400\;\mathrm{km}\;\mathrm{s}^{-1}$. Higher spectral diffraction orders allow us to resolve line components of high Z He-like triplets in $\theta^1$ Ori C with unprecedented spectral resolution. Long term light curves spanning $\sim$20 years show all stars to be highly variable, including the massive stars. Spectral fitting with thermal coronal emission line models reveals that most sources show column densities of up to a few times $10^{22}\,$cm$^{-2}$ and high coronal temperatures of 10 to 90 MK. We observe a bifurcation of the high temperature component where some stars show a high component of 40 MK, while others show above 60 MK indicating heavy flaring activity. Some lines are resolved with Doppler broadening above our threshold of $\sim200\;\mathrm{km}\;\mathrm{s}^{-1}$, up to $500\;\mathrm{km}\;\mathrm{s}^{-1}$. High-resolution X-ray spectra of $\pi\,$Aqr, a $\gamma\,$Cas-type star, obtained with the Chandra/HETG grating spectrometer, revealed emission lines of H-like ions of Mg, Si, S, and Fe, a strong, hard continuum, and a lack of He-like ions, indicating the presence of very hot thermal plasma. The X-ray light curve showed significant fluctuations, with coherent variability at period of about 3400 seconds in one observation. The hardness ratio was relatively constant except for one observation in which the spectrum was much harder and more absorbed. We interpret the X-ray emission as arising from accretion onto the secondary, which is likely a magnetic white dwarf, an intermediate polar system., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures, 3 tables

We present measurements of the polarization of X-rays in the 2-8 keV band from the pulsar in the ultracompact low mass X-ray binary 4U1626-67 using data from the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE). The 7.66 s pulsations were clearly detected throughout the IXPE observations as well as in the NICER soft X-ray observations, which we use as the basis for our timing analysis and to constrain the spectral shape over 0.4-10 keV energy band. Chandra HETGS high-resolution X-ray spectra were also obtained near the times of the IXPE observations for firm spectral modeling. We find an upper limit on the pulse-averaged linear polarization of <4% (at 95% confidence). Similarly, there was no significant detection of polarized flux in pulse phase intervals when subdividing the bandpass by energy. However, spectropolarimetric modeling over the full bandpass in pulse phase intervals provide a marginal detection of polarization of the power-law spectral component at the 4.8 +/- 2.3% level (90% confidence). We present an analysis of \chandra/LETGS observations of the ultracompact X-ray binary (UCXB) 4U 1626$-$67, continuing our project to analyze the existing Chandra gratings data of this interesting source. The extremely low mass, hydrogen-depleted donor star provides a unique opportunity to study the properties and structure of the metal-rich accreted plasma. There are strong, double-peaked emission features of OVII-VIII and Ne IX-X, but no other identified emission lines are detected. Our spectral fit simultaneously models the emission line profiles and the plasma parameters, using a two-temperature collisionally-ionized plasma. Based on our line profile fitting, we constrain the inclination of the system to 25--60$^{\circ}$ and the inner disk radius to $\sim$1500 gravitational radii, in turn constraining the donor mass to $\lesssim$0.026 M_sun, while our plasma modeling confirms previous reports of high neon abundance in the source, establishing a Ne/O ratio in the system of $0.47 \pm 0.04$, while simultaneously estimating a very low Fe/O ratio of $0.0042 \pm 0.0008$ and limiting the Mg/O ratio to less than 1% by number. We describe a new implementation of a broad-band soft X-ray polarimeter, substantially based on a previous design. This implementation, the Pioneer Soft X-ray Polarimeter (PiSoX) is a SmallSat, designed for NASA's call for Astrophysics Pioneers, small missions that could be CubeSats, balloon experiments, or SmallSats. As in the REDSoX Polarimeter, the grating arrangement is designed optimally for the purpose of polarimetry with broad-band focussing optics by matching the dispersion of the spectrometer channels to laterally graded multilayers (LGMLs). The system can achieve polarization modulation factors over 90%. For PiSoX, the optics are lightweight Si mirrors in a one-bounce parabolic configuration. High efficiency, blazed gratings from opposite sectors are oriented to disperse to a LGML forming a channel covering the wavelength range from 35 to 75 Angstroms (165 - 350 eV). Upon satellite rotation, the intensities of the dispersed spectra, after reflection and polarizing by the LGMLs, give the three Stokes parameters needed to determine a source's linear polarization fraction and orientation. The design can be extended to higher energies as LGMLs are developed further. We report on high-resolution X-ray spectroscopy of the ultracompact X-ray binary pulsar 4U 1626-67 with Chandra/HETGS acquired in 2010, two years after the pulsar experienced a torque reversal. The well-known strong Ne and O emission lines with Keplerian profiles are shown to arise at the inner edge of the magnetically-channeled accretion disk. We exclude a photoionization model for these lines based on the absence of sharp radiative recombination continua. Instead, we show that the lines arise from a collisional plasma in the inner-disk atmosphere, with $T\simeq 10^7$ K and $n_e \sim 10^{17}$ cm^(-3). We suggest that the lines are powered by X-ray heating of the optically-thick disk inner edge at normal incidence. Comparison of the line profiles in HETGS observations from 2000, 2003, and 2010 show that the inner disk radius decreased by a factor of two after the pulsar went from spin-down to spin-up, as predicted by magnetic accretion torque theory. The inner disk is well inside the corotation radius during spin-up, and slightly beyond the corotation radius during spin-down. Based on the disk radius and accretion torque measured during steady spin-up, the pulsar's X-ray luminosity is $2\times 10^{36}$ erg/s, yielding a source distance of 3.5(+0.2-0.3) kpc. The mass accretion rate is an order of magnitude larger than expected from gravitational radiation reaction, possibly due to X-ray heating of the donor. The line profiles also indicate a binary inclination of 39(+20-10) degrees, consistent with a 0.02 Msun donor star. Our emission measure analysis favors a He white dwarf or a highly-evolved H-poor main sequence remnant for the donor star, rather than a C-O or O-Ne white dwarf. The measured Ne/O ratio is 0.46+-0.14 by number. We present an analysis of three Chandra High Energy Transmission Gratings observations of the black hole binary Cyg X-1/HDE 226868 at different orbital phases. The stellar wind that is powering the accretion in this system is characterized by temperature and density inhomogeneities including structures, or "clumps", of colder, more dense material embedded in the photoionized gas. As these clumps pass our line of sight, absorption dips appear in the light curve. We characterize the properties of the clumps through spectral changes during various dip stages. Comparing the silicon and sulfur absorption line regions (1.6-2.7 keV $\equiv$ 7.7-4.6 {\AA}) in four levels of varying column depth reveals the presence of lower ionization stages, i.e., colder or denser material, in the deeper dip phases. The Doppler velocities of the lines are roughly consistent within each observation, varying with the respective orbital phase. This is consistent with the picture of a structure that consists of differently ionized material, in which shells of material facing the black hole shield the inner and back shells from the ionizing radiation. The variation of the Doppler velocities compared to a toy model of the stellar wind, however, does not allow us to pin down an exact location of the clump region in the system. We present the X-ray spectral and timing analysis of the transient black hole X-ray binary 4U 1630-47, observed with the AstroSat, Chandra and MAXI space missions during its soft X-ray outburst in 2016. The outburst, from the rising phase until the peak, is neither detected in hard X-rays (15-50 keV) by the Swift/BAT nor in radio. Such non-detection along with the source behavior in the hardness-intensity and color-color diagrams obtained using MAXI data confirm that both Chandra and AstroSat observations were performed during the high soft spectral state. The High Energy Grating (HEG) spectrum from the Chandra high-energy transmission grating spectrometer (HETGS) shows two strong, moderately blueshifted absorption lines at 6.705$_{-0.002}^{+0.002}$ keV and 6.974$_{-0.003}^{+0.004}$ keV, which are produced by Fe XXV and Fe XXVI in a low-velocity ionized disk wind. The corresponding outflow velocity is determined to be 366$\pm$56 km/s. Separate spectral fits of Chandra/HEG, AstroSat/SXT+LAXPC and Chandra/HEG + AstroSat/SXT+LAXPC data show that the broadband continuum can be well described with a relativistic disk-blackbody model, with the disk flux fraction of $\sim 0.97$. Based on the best-fit continuum spectral modeling of Chandra, AstroSat and Chandra+AstroSat joint spectra and using the Markov Chain Monte Carlo simulations, we constrain the spectral hardening factor at 1.56$^{+0.14}_{-0.06}$ and the dimensionless black hole spin parameter at 0.92 $\pm$ 0.04 within the 99.7% confidence interval. Our conclusion of a rapidly-spinning black hole in 4U 1630-47 using the continuum spectrum method is in agreement with a previous finding applying the reflection spectral fitting method., Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures, 1 table, accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal

We present the analysis of seven \emph{Chandra} High Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer and six simultaneous \emph{RXTE} Proportional Counter Array observations of the persistent neutron star (NS) low-mass X-ray binary GX 13+1 on its normal and horizontal branches. Across nearly 10 years, GX 13+1 is consistently found to be accreting at $50-70$\% Eddington, and all observations exhibit multiple narrow, blueshifted absorption features, the signature of a disk wind, despite the association of normal and horizontal branches with jet activity. A single absorber with standard abundances cannot account for all seven major disk wind features, indicating that multiple absorption zones may be present. Two or three absorbers can produce all of the absorption features at their observed broadened widths and reveal that multiple kinematic components produce the accretion disk wind signature. Assuming the most ionized absorber reflects the physical conditions closest to the NS, we estimate a wind launching radius of $7\times10^{10}$ cm, for an electron density of $10^{12}$ cm$^{-3}$. This is consistent with the Compton radius and also with a thermally driven wind. The cluster NGC 3603 hosts some of the most massive stars in the Galaxy. With a modest 50 ks exposure with the Chandra High Energy Grating Spectrometer, we have resolved emission lines in spectra of several of the brightest cluster members which are of WNh and O spectral types. This observation provides our first definitive high-resolution spectra of such stars in this nearby starburst region. The stars studied have broadened X-ray emission lines, some with blue-shifted centroids, and are characteristic of massive stellar winds with terminal velocities around 2000--3000 km/s. X-ray luminosities and plasma temperatures are very high for both the WNh and O stars studied. We survey the Si K edge structure in various absorbed Galactic low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) to study states of silicon in the inter- and circum-stellar medium. The bulk of these LMXBs lie toward the Galactic bulge region and all have column densities above $10^{22}$ cm$^{-2}$. The observations were performed with the \emph{Chandra} High Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer. The Si K edge in all sources appears at an energy value of 1844$\pm$0.001 eV. The edge exhibits significant substructure which can be described by a near edge absorption feature at 1849$\pm$0.002 eV and a far edge absorption feature at 1865$\pm$0.002 eV. Both of these absorption features appear variable with equivalent widths up to several m\AA. We can describe the edge structure with several components: multiple edge functions, near edge absorption excesses from silicates in dust form, signatures from X-ray scattering optical depths, and a variable warm absorber from ionized atomic silicon. The measured optical depths of the edges indicate much higher values than expected from atomic silicon cross sections and ISM abundances, and appear consistent with predictions from silicate X-ray absorption and scattering. A comparison with models also indicates a preference for larger dust grain sizes. In many cases we identify \sixiii\ resonance absorption and determine ionization parameters between log $\xi$ = 1.8 and 2.8 and turbulent velocities between 300 and 1000 \kms. This places the warm absorber in close vicinity of the X-ray binaries. The accretion onto the black hole in the system HDE 226868/Cygnus X-1 is powered by the strong line driven stellar wind of the O-type donor star. We study the X-ray properties of the stellar wind in the hard state of Cyg X-1 as determined with data from the Chandra High Energy Transmission Gratings. Large density and temperature inhomogeneities are present in the wind, with a fraction of the wind consisting of clumps of matter with higher density and lower temperature embedded in a photoionized gas. Absorption dips observed in the light curve are believed to be caused by these clumps. This work concentrates on the non-dip spectra as a function of orbital phase. The spectra show lines of H-like and He-like ions of S, Si, Na, Mg, Al and highly ionized Fe (Fe xvii-Fe xxiv). We measure velocity shifts, column densities, and thermal broadening of the line series. The excellent quality of these five observations allows us to investigate the orbital phase dependence of these parameters. We show that the absorber is located close to the black hole. Doppler shifted lines point at a complex wind structure in this region, while emission lines seen in some observations are from a denser medium than the absorber. The observed line profiles are phase dependent. Their shapes vary from pure, symmetric absorption at the superior conjunction to P Cygni profiles at the inferior conjunction of the black hole., Comment: A&A, accepted (26 pages, 18 figures)

With a deep Chandra/HETGS exposure of WR 6, we have resolved emission lines whose profiles show that the X-rays originate from a uniformly expanding spherical wind of high X-ray-continuum optical depth. The presence of strong helium-like forbidden lines places the source of X-ray emission at tens to hundreds of stellar radii from the photosphere. Variability was present in X-rays and simultaneous optical photometry, but neither were correlated with the known period of the system or with each other. An enhanced abundance of sodium revealed nuclear processed material, a quantity related to the evolutionary state of the star. The characterization of the extent and nature of the hot plasma in WR 6 will help to pave the way to a more fundamental theoretical understanding of the winds and evolution of massive stars., Comment: Accepted by the Astrophysical Journal

Circinus X-1 exhibited a bright X-ray flare in late 2013. Follow-up observations with Chandra and XMM-Newton from 40 to 80 days after the flare reveal a bright X-ray light echo in the form of four well-defined rings with radii from 5 to 13 arcminutes, growing in radius with time. The large fluence of the flare and the large column density of interstellar dust towards Circinus X-1 make this the largest and brightest set of rings from an X-ray light echo observed to date. By deconvolving the radial intensity profile of the echo with the MAXI X-ray lightcurve of the flare we reconstruct the dust distribution towards Circinus X-1 into four distinct dust concentrations. By comparing the peak in scattering intensity with the peak intensity in CO maps of molecular clouds from the Mopra Southern Galactic Plane CO Survey we identify the two innermost rings with clouds at radial velocity ~ -74 km/s and ~ -81 km/s, respectively. We identify a prominent band of foreground photoelectric absorption with a lane of CO gas at ~ -32 km/s. From the association of the rings with individual CO clouds we determine the kinematic distance to Circinus X-1 to be $D_{Cir X-1} = 9.4^{+0.8}_{-1.0}$ kpc. This distance rules out earlier claims of a distance around 4 kpc, implies that Circinus X-1 is a frequent super-Eddington source, and places a lower limit of $\Gamma \gtrsim 22$ on the Lorentz factor and an upper limit of $\theta_{jet} \lesssim 3^{\circ}$ on the jet viewing angle., Comment: 20 pages, 21 figures, Astrophysical Journal, in print

The Chandra High Energy Transmission Gratings (HETG) Orion Legacy Project (HOLP) is the first comprehensive set of observations of a very young massive stellar cluster which provides high resolution X-ray spectra of very young stars over a wide mass range (0.7 - 2.3 Msun). In this paper, we focus on the six brightest X-ray sources with T Tauri stellar counterparts which are well-characterized at optical and infra-red wavelengths. All stars show column densities which are substantially smaller than expected from optical extinction indicating that the sources are located on the near side of the cluster with respect to the observer as well as that these stars are embedded in more dusty environments. Stellar X-ray luminosities are well above $10^{31}$ erg/s, in some cases exceeding $10^{32}$ erg/s for a substantial amount of time. The stars during these observations show no flares but are persistently bright. The spectra can be well fit with two temperature plasma components of 10 MK and 40 MK, of which the latter dominates the flux by a ratio 6:1 on average. The total EMs range between 3 - 8$\times10^{54}$ cm$^{-3}$ and are comparable to active coronal sources. Limits on the forbidden to inter-combination line ratios in the He-Like K-shell lines show that we observe a predominantely optically thin plasma with electron densities below $10^{12}$ cm$^{-3}$. Observed abundances compare well with active coronal sources underlying the coronal nature of these sources. The surface flux in this sample of 0.6 to 2.3 Msun classical T Tauri stars shows that coronal activity and possibly coronal loop size increase significantly between ages 0.1 to 10 Myrs., Comment: 13 pages, 12 figures, submitted to the Astrophysical Journal

We present continued development of laterally graded multilayer mirrors (LGMLs) for a telescope design capable of measuring linear X-ray polarization over a broad spectral band. The multilayer-coated mirrors are used as Bragg reflectors at the Brewster angle. By matching to the dispersion of a spectrometer, one may take advantage of high multilayer reflectivities and achieve modulation factors over 50% over the entire 0.2-0.8 keV band. In Phase II of the polarimetry beam-line development, we demonstrated that the system provides 100% polarized X-rays at 0.525 keV (Marshall et al. 2013). Here, we present results from phase III of our development, where a LGML is used at the source and laterally manipulated in order to select and polarize X-rays from emission lines for a variety of source anodes. The beamline will then provide the capability to test polarimeter components across the 0.15-0.70 keV band. We are developing instrumentation for a telescope design capable of measuring linear X-ray polarization over a broad-band using conventional spectroscopic optics. Multilayer-coated mirrors are key to this approach, being used as Bragg reflectors at the Brewster angle. By laterally grading the multilayer mirrors and matching to the dispersion of a spectrometer, one may take advantage of high multilayer reflectivities and achieve modulation factors over 50% over the entire 0.2-0.8 keV band. We present progress on laboratory work to demonstrate the capabilities of an existing laterally graded multilayer coated mirror pair. We present observations of the SS 433 jets using the Chandra High Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer with contemporaneous optical and VLBA observations. The X-ray and optical emission line regions are found to be related but not coincident as the optical line emission persists for days while the X-ray emission lines fade in less than 5000 s. The line Doppler shifts from the optical and X-ray lines match well, indicating that they are less than 3e14 cm apart. The jet Doppler shifts show aperiodic variations that could result from shocks in interactions with the local environment. These perturbations are consistent with a change in jet direction but not jet speed. The proper motions of the radio knots match the kinematic model only if the distance to SS 433 is 4.5 +/- 0.2 kpc. Observations during eclipse show that the occulted emission is very hard, seen only above 2 keV and rising to comprise >50% of the flux at 8 keV. The soft X-ray emission lines from the jet are not blocked, constraining the jet length to >~ 2e12 cm. The base jet density is in the range 1e(10-13)/cm^3, in contrast to our previous estimate based on the Si XIII triplet, which is likely to have been affected by UV de-excitation. There is a clear overabundance of Ni by a factor of about 10 relative to the solar value, which may have resulted from an unusual supernova that formed the compact object., Comment: 38 pages, 14 figures, accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal

We present an analysis of a pointed 141 ks Chandra high resolution transmission gratings observation of the Be X-ray emitting star HD110432, a prominent member of the gamma Cas analogs. The Chandra lightcurve shows a high variability but its analysis fails to detect any coherent periodicity up to a frequency of 0.05 Hz. The analysis of the Chandra HETG spectrum shows that, to correctly describe the spectrum, three model components are needed. Two of those components are optically thin thermal plasmas of different temperatures (kT~8-9 and 0.2-0.3 keV respectively). Two different models seem to describe well the third component. One possibility is a third hot optically thin thermal plasma at kT=16-21 keV with an Fe abundance Z~0.3Zo, definitely smaller than for the other two thermal components. Alternatively, the third component can be described by a powerlaw with a photon index Gamma=1.56. In either case, the Chandra HETG spectrum establishes that each one of these components must be modified by distinct absorption columns. The analysis of a non contemporaneous 25 ks Suzaku observation shows the presence of a hard tail extending up to at least 33 keV. The Suzaku spectrum is described with the sum of two components: an optically thin thermal plasma at kT ~ 9 keV and a very hot second plasma with kT ~33 keV or, alternatively, a powerlaw with photon index Gamma=1.58. The analysis of the Si XIII and S XV He like triplets present in the Chandra spectrum point to a very dense (n_e ~ 10^13 cm^-3) plasma located either close to the stellar surface (r<3R_*) of the Be star or, alternatively, very close (r ~1.5R_WD) to the surface of a (hypothetical) WD companion. The X-ray luminosity of black holes is produced through the accretion of material from their companion stars. Depending on the mass of the donor star, accretion of the material falling onto the black hole through the inner Lagrange point of the system or accretion by the strong stellar wind can occur. Cygnus X-1 is a high mass X-ray binary system, where the black hole is powered by accretion of the stellar wind of its supergiant companion star HDE226868. As the companion is close to filling its Roche lobe, the wind is not symmetric, but strongly focused towards the black hole. Chandra-HETGS observations allow for an investigation of this focused stellar wind, which is essential to understand the physics of the accretion flow. We compare observations at the distinct orbital phases of 0.0, 0.2, 0.5 and 0.75. We investigate X-ray emission properties of the peculiar X-ray source Theta2 Ori A in the Orion trapezium region using more than 500 ksec of HETGS spectral data in the quiescent state. The amount of exposure provides tight constraints on several important diagnostics involving O, Ne, Mg, and Si line flux ratios from He-like ion triplets, resonance line ratios of the H- and He-like lines and line widths. Accounting for the influence of the strong UV radiation field of the O9.7V star we can now place the He-like line origin well within two stellar radii of the O-star's surface. The lines are resolved with average line widths of 341+-38 km/s confirming a line origin relatively close to the stellar surface. In the framework of standard wind models this implies a rather weak, low opacity wind restricting wind shocks to temperatures not much larger than 2x10^6 K. The emission measure distribution of the X-ray spectrum, as reported previously, includes very high temperature components which are not easily explained in this framework. The X-ray properties are also not consistent with coronal emissions from an unseen low-mass companion nor with typical signatures from colliding wind interactions. The properties are more consistent with X-ray signatures observed in the massive Trapezium star Theta1 Ori C which has recently been successfully modeled with a magnetically confined wind model., Comment: 11 pages, 4 color postscript figures, Submitted to ApJ

4U 1822-371 is one of the proto-type accretion disk coronal sources with an orbital period of about 5.6 hours. The binary is viewed almost edge-on at a high inclination angle of 83 degrees, which makes it a unique candidate to study binary orbital and accretion disk dynamics in high powered X-ray sources. We observed the X-ray source in 4U 1822-371 with the Chandra High Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer (HETGS) for almost nine binary orbits. X-ray eclipse times provide an update of the orbital ephemeris. We find that our result follows the quadratic function implied by previous observations; however, it suggests a flatter trend. Detailed line dynamics also confirm a previous suggestion that the observed photo-ionized line emission originates from a confined region in the outer edge of the accretion disk near the hot spot. Line properties allow us to impose limits on the size of accretion disk, the central corona, and the emission region. The photo-ionized plasma is consistent with ionization parameters of log(xi) > 2, and when combined with disk size and reasonable assumptions for the plasma density, this suggests illuminating disk luminosities which are over an order of magnitude higher than what is actually observed. That is, we do not directly observe the central emitting X-ray source. The spectral continua are best fit by a flat power law with a high energy cut-off and partial covering absorption (N_H ranging from 5.4-6.3x10^{22} cm^{-2}) with a covering fraction of about 50%. We study the spectral and temporal behavior of X-ray flares from the active M-dwarf EV Lac in 200 ks of exposure with the Chandra/HETGS. We derive flare parameters by fitting an empirical function which characterizes the amplitude, shape, and scale. The flares range from very short (<1 ks) to long (10 ks) duration events with a range of shapes and amplitudes for all durations. We extract spectra for composite flares to study their mean evolution and to compare flares of different lengths. Evolution of spectral features in the density-temperature plane shows probable sustained heating. The short flares are significantly hotter than the longer flares. We investigate the structure of the wind in the neutron star X-ray binary system Vela X-1 by analyzing its flaring behavior. Vela X-1 shows constant flaring, with some flares reaching fluxes of more than 3.0 Crab between 20-60 keV for several 100 seconds, while the average flux is around 250 mCrab. We analyzed all archival INTEGRAL data, calculating the brightness distribution in the 20-60 keV band, which, as we show, closely follows a log-normal distribution. Orbital resolved analysis shows that the structure is strongly variable, explainable by shocks and a fluctuating accretion wake. Analysis of RXTE ASM data suggests a strong orbital change of N_H. Accreted clump masses derived from the INTEGRAL data are on the order of 5 x 10^19 -10^21 g. We show that the lightcurve can be described with a model of multiplicative random numbers. In the course of the simulation we calculate the power spectral density of the system in the 20-100 keV energy band and show that it follows a red-noise power law. We suggest that a mixture of a clumpy wind, shocks, and turbulence can explain the measured mass distribution. As the recently discovered class of supergiant fast X-ray transients (SFXT) seems to show the same parameters for the wind, the link between persistent HMXB like Vela X-1 and SFXT is further strengthened., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

We observed the ultra-compact binary candidate 4U 0614+091 for a total of 200 ksec with the high-energy transmission gratings onboard the \chandra X-ray Observatory. The source is found at various intensity levels with spectral variations present. X-ray luminosities vary between 2.0$\times10^{36}$ \ergsec and 3.5$\times10^{36}$ \ergsec. Continuum variations are present at all times and spectra can be well fit with a powerlaw component, a high kT blackbody component, and a broad line component near oxygen. The spectra require adjustments to the Ne K edge and in some occasions also to the Mg K edge. The Ne K edge appears variable in terms of optical depths and morphology. The edge reveals average blue- and red-shifted values implying Doppler velocities of the order of 3500 \kms. The data show that Ne K exhibits excess column densities of up to several 10$^{18}$ cm$^{-2}$. The variability proves that the excess is intrinsic to the source. The correponding disk velocities also imply an outer disk radius of the order of $< 10^9$ cm consistent with an ultra-compact binary nature. We also detect a prominent soft emission line complex near the \oviii L$\alpha$ position which appears extremely broad and relativistic effects from near the innermost disk have to be included. Gravitationally broadened line fits also provide nearly edge-on angles of inclination between 86 and 89$^{\circ}$. The emissions appear consistent with an ionized disk with ionization parameters of the order of 10$^4$ at radii of a few 10$^7$ cm. We present results from simultaneous observations of the high-mass X-ray binary system Cygnus X-1 / HDE 226868 with Suzaku, Chandra-HETGS, XMM-Newton, RXTE, INTEGRAL, and Swift in 2008 April. Performed shortly after orbital phase 0, when our line of sight to the black hole passes through the densest part of the O-star's wind, these obervations show common transient absorption dips in the soft X-ray band. For the first time, however, we detect a simultaneous scattering trough in the hard X-ray light curves. The more neutral clump is thus only the core of a larger ionized blob, which contains a significant fraction of the total wind mass. We measure the neutral absorption towards the black hole X-ray binary system LMC X-1 from six archival soft X-ray spectra obtained with the gratings and/or CCD detectors on Chandra, XMM-Newton, and Swift. Four spectral models for the soft continuum have been investigated. While the powerlaw model may overestimate NH considerably, the others give consistent results. Taking the lower metalicity of the Large Magellanic Cloud into account, we find equivalent hydrogen column densities of N_H = (1.0-1.3)*10^22 cm^-2, with a systematic dependence on the orbital phase. This variation of the neutral absorption can nearly explain the orbital modulation of the soft X-ray flux recently detected with the All Sky Monitor (ASM) on the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE)., Comment: 4 pages, accepted for publication as a Letter in Astronomy and Astrophysics

We present initial results from a new 440-ks Chandra HETG GTO observation of the canonical Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 1068. The proximity of NGC 1068, together with Chandra's superb spatial and spectral resolution, allow an unprecedented view of its nucleus and circumnuclear NLR. We perform the first spatially resolved high-resolution X-ray spectroscopy of the `ionization cone' in any AGN, and use the sensitive line diagnostics offered by the HETG to measure the ionization state, density, and temperature at discrete points along the ionized NLR. We argue that the NLR takes the form of outflowing photoionized gas, rather than gas that has been collisionally ionized by the small-scale radio jet in NGC 1068. Theta 1 Ori E is a young, moderate mass binary system, a rarely observed case of spectral-type G-giants of about 3 Solar masses, which are still collapsing towards the main sequence. We have obtained high resolution X-ray spectra with Chandra and find that the system is very active and similar to coronal sources, having emission typical of magnetically confined plasma: a broad temperature distribution with a hot component and significant high energy continuum; narrow emission lines from H- and He-like ions, as well as a range of Fe ions, and relative luminosity, L_x/L_bol = 0.001. Density, while poorly constrained, is consistent with the low density limits as determined from Mg XI and Ne IX emission lines. Coronal elemental abundances are sub-Solar, with Ne being the highest at about 0.4 times Solar. We find a possible trend in Trapezium hot plasmas towards low relative abundances of Fe, O, and Ne, which is hard to explain in terms of the dust depletion scenarios of low-mass young stars. Variability was unusually low relative to other coronally active stars. The emission is similar to post main-sequence G-stars. Coronal structures could be compact or comparable to the dimensions of the stellar radii. We present a detailed spectral study (photoionization modelling and variability) of the "Big Dipper" 4U 1624-490 based on a \chandra-High Energy Transmission Gratings Spectrometer (HETGS) observation over the $\sim76$ ks binary orbit of 4U 1624-490. While the continuum spectrum can be modeled using a blackbody plus power-law, a slightly better fit is obtained using a single $\Gamma=2.25$ power-law partially (71%) covered by a local absorber of column density $N_{\rm H, Local}=8.1_{-0.6}^{+0.7}\times 10^{22} \rm cm^{-2}$. The data show a possible quasi-sinusoidal modulation with period $43_{-9}^{+13}$ ks that might be due to changes in local obscuration. Photoionization modeling with the {\sc xstar} code and variability studies of the observed strong \ion{Fe}{25} and \ion{Fe}{26} absorption lines point to a two-temperature plasma for their origin: a highly ionized component of ionization parameter $\xi_{\rm hot} \approx 10^{4.3} {\rm ergs cm s^{-1}}$ ($T\sim 3.0\times 10^{6}$ K) associated with an extended accretion disk corona of radius $R \sim3\times10^{10}$ cm, and a less ionized more variable component of $\xi \approx 10^{3.4} {\rm ergs cm s^{-1}}$ ($T\sim 1.0\times 10^{6}$ K) and $\rm \xi \approx 10^{3.1} ergs cm s^{-1}$ ($T\sim 0.9\times 10^{6}$ K) coincident with the accretion disk rim. We use this, with the observed \ion{Fe}{25} and \ion{Fe}{26} absorption line variations (in wavelength, strength, and width) to construct a viewing geometry that is mapped to changes in plasma conditions over the 4U 1624-490 orbital period., Comment: 27 pages, 7 figures, 6 tables, accepted for publication in ApJ

Low-mass pre-main sequence (PMS) stars are strong and variable X-ray emitters, as has been well established by EINSTEIN and ROSAT observatories. It was originally believed that this emission was of thermal nature and primarily originated from coronal activity (magnetically confined loops, in analogy with Solar activity) on contracting young stars. Broadband spectral analysis showed that the emission was not isothermal and that elemental abundances were non-Solar. The resolving power of the Chandra and XMM X-ray gratings spectrometers have provided the first, tantalizing details concerning the physical conditions such as temperatures, densities, and abundances that characterize the X-ray emitting regions of young star. These existing high resolution spectrometers, however, simply do not have the effective area to measure diagnostic lines for a large number of PMS stars over required to answer global questions such as: how does magnetic activity in PMS stars differ from that of main sequence stars, how do they evolve, what determines the population structure and activity in stellar clusters, and how does the activity influence the evolution of protostellar disks. Highly resolved (R>3000) X-ray spectroscopy at orders of magnitude greater efficiency than currently available will provide major advances in answering these questions. Understanding the origins and distribution of matter in the Universe is one of the most important quests in physics and astronomy. Themes range from astro-particle physics to chemical evolution in the Galaxy to cosmic nucleosynthesis and chemistry in an anticipation of a full account of matter in the Universe. Studies of chemical evolution in the early Universe will answer questions about when and where the majority of metals were formed, how they spread and why they appar today as they are. The evolution of matter in our Universe cannot be characterized as a simple path of development. In fact the state of matter today tells us that mass and matter is under constant reformation through on-going star formation, nucleosynthesis and mass loss on stellar and galactic scales. X-ray absorption studies have evolved in recent years into powerful means to probe the various phases of interstellar and intergalactic media. Future observatories such as IXO and Gen-X will provide vast new opportunities to study structure and distribution of matter with high resolution X-ray spectra. Specifically the capabilities of the soft energy gratings with a resolution of R=3000 onboard IXO will provide ground breaking determinations of element abundance, ionization structure, and dispersion velocities of the interstellar and intergalactic media of our Galaxy and the Local Group, Comment: A White Paper Submitted to the Astro2010 Decadal Survey

High resolution X-ray absorption spectroscopy is a powerful diagnostic tool for probing chemical and physical properties of the interstellar medium (ISM) at various phases. We present detections of K transition absorption lines from the low ionization ions of OI, OII, NeI, NeII, and NeIII, and the high ionization ones of OVI, OVII, OVIII, NeIX, and MgXI, as well as details of neutral absorption edges from Mg, Ne, and O in an unprecedented high quality spectrum of the low mass X-ray binary Cyg X-2. These absorption features trace the intervening interstellar medium which is indicated by the unshifted line centroids with respect to the rest frame wavelengths of the corresponding atomic transitions. We have measured the column densities of each ion. We complement these measurements with the radio HI and optical Halpha observations toward the same sight line and estimate the mean abundances of Ne, O, and Mg in the cool phase to Ne/H=0.84^{+0.13}_{-0.10}\times10^{-4}, O/H=3.83^{+0.48}_{-0.43}\times10^{-4}, and Mg/H=0.35^{+0.09}_{-0.11}\times10^{-4}, and O and Mg in the hot phase to O/H=5.81^{+1.30}_{-1.34}\times10^{-4} and Mg/H=0.33^{+0.09}_{-0.09}\times10^{-4}, respectively. These results indicate a mild depletion of oxygen into dust grains in the cool phase and little or no depletion of magnesium. We also find that absorption from highly ionized ions in the hot Galactic disk gas can account for most of the absorption observed toward the extragalactic sight lines like Mrk 421. The bulk of the observed OVI likely originates from the conductive interfaces between the cool and hot gases, from which a significant amount of NV and CIV emission is predicted., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ, 13 pages, 6 figures, and 7 tables

High-mass X-ray binary systems are powered by the stellar wind of their donor stars. The X-ray state of Cygnus X-1 is correlated with the properties of the wind which defines the environment of mass accretion. Chandra-HETGS observations close to orbital phase 0 allow for an analysis of the photoionzed stellar wind at high resolution, but because of the strong variability due to soft X-ray absorption dips, simultaneous multi-satellite observations are required to track and understand the continuum, too. Besides an earlier joint Chandra and RXTE observation, we present first results from a recent campaign which represents the best broad-band spectrum of Cyg X-1 ever achieved: On 2008 April 18/19 we observed this source with XMM-Newton, Chandra, Suzaku, RXTE, INTEGRAL, Swift, and AGILE in X- and gamma-rays, as well as with VLA in the radio. After superior conjunction of the black hole, we detect soft X-ray absorption dips likely due to clumps in the focused wind covering >95 % of the X-ray source, with column densities likely to be of several 10^23 cm^-2, which also affect photon energies above 20 keV via Compton scattering., Comment: 10 pages, contributed talk at the 7th Microquasar Workshop, Foca, Turkey, Sept. 1-5, 2008

We present simultaneous Chandra-HETG and RXTE observations of a moderate flux `soft state' of the black hole candidate 4U1957+11. These spectra, having a minimally discernible hard X-ray excess, are an excellent test of modern disk atmosphere models that include the effects of black hole spin. The HETG data show that the soft disk spectrum is only very mildly absorbed with N_H =1-2 X 10^{21} cm^-2. These data additionally reveal 13.449 A NeIX absorption consistent with the warm/hot phase of the interstellar medium. The fitted disk model implies a highly inclined disk around a low mass black hole rapidly rotating with normalized spin a*~1. We show, however, that pure Schwarzschild black hole models describe the data extremely well, albeit with large disk atmosphere ``color-correction'' factors. Standard color-correction factors can be attained if one additionally incorporates mild Comptonization. We find that the Chandra observations do not uniquely determine spin. Similarly, XMM/RXTE observations, taken only six weeks later, are equally unconstraining. This lack of constraint is partly driven by the unknown mass and unknown distance of 4U1957+11; however, it is also driven by the limited bandpass of Chandra and XMM. We therefore present a series of 48 RXTE observations taken over the span of several years and at different brightness/hardness levels. These data prefer a spin of a*~1, even when including a mild Comptonization component; however, they also show evolution of the disk atmosphere color-correction factors. If the rapid spin models with standard atmosphere color-correction factors of h_d=1.7 are to be believed, then the RXTE observations predict that 4U1957+11 can range from a 3 M_sun black hole at 10 kpc with a*~0.83 to a 16 M_sun black hole at 22 kpc with a* ~ 1, with the latter being statistically preferred., Comment: 16 pages (emulateapj style). We present analyses of a 50 ks observation of the supergiant X-ray binary system Cygnus X-1/HDE 226868 taken with the Chandra High Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer (HETGS). Cyg X-1 was in its spectrally hard state and the observation was performed during superior conjunction of the black hole, allowing for the spectroscopic analysis of the accreted stellar wind along the line of sight. A significant part of the observation covers X-ray dips as commonly observed for Cyg X-1 at this orbital phase, however, here we only analyze the high count rate non-dip spectrum. The full 0.5-10 keV continuum can be described by a single model consisting of a disk, a narrow and a relativistically broadened Fe Kalpha line, and a power law component, which is consistent with simultaneous RXTE broad band data. We detect absorption edges from overabundant neutral O, Ne and Fe, and absorption line series from highly ionized ions and infer column densities and Doppler shifts. With emission lines of He-like Mg XI, we detect two plasma components with velocities and densities consistent with the base of the spherical wind and a focused wind. A simple simulation of the photoionization zone suggests that large parts of the spherical wind outside of the focused stream are completely ionized, which is consistent with the low velocities (<200 km/s) observed in the absorption lines, as the position of absorbers in a spherical wind at low projected velocity is well constrained. We present Chandra-HETGS observations of the Herbig Ae star HD 104237 and the associated young stars comprising lower mass stars, in the 0.15-1.75\msol mass range, in their pre-main sequence phase. The brightest X-ray source in the association is the central system harboring the Herbig Ae primary, and a K3 companion. Its X-ray variability indicates modulation possibly on time scales of the rotation period of the Herbig Ae star, and this would imply that the primary significantly contributes to the overall emission. The spectrum of the Herbig Ae+K3 system shows a soft component significantly more pronounced than in other K-type young stars. This soft emission is reminiscent of the unusually soft spectra observed for the single Herbig Ae stars HD 163296 and AB Aur, and therefore we tentatively attribute it to the Herbig Ae of the binary system. The HETGS spectrum shows strong emission lines corresponding to a wide range of plasma temperatures. The He-like triplet of MgXI and NeIX suggest the presence of plasma at densities of about $10^{12}$ cm$^{-3}$, possibly indicating accretion related X-ray production mechanism. The analysis of the zero-order spectra of the other sources indicates X-ray emission characteristics typical of pre-main sequence stars of similar spectral type, with the exception of the T Tauri HD104237-D, whose extremely soft emission is very similar to the emission of the classical T Tauri star TW Hya, and suggests X-ray production by shocked accreting plasma., Comment: accepted for publication on the Astrophysical Journal

We fit Chandra HETGS data obtained for the unusual X-ray binary SS 433. While line strengths and continuum levels hardly change, the jet Doppler shifts show aperiodic variations that probably result from shocks in interactions with the local environment. The X-ray and optical emission line regions are found to be related but not coincident as the optical line emission persists for days while the X-ray emission lines fade in less than 5000 s. The X-ray spectrum of the blue-shifted jet shows over two dozen emission lines from plasma at a variety of temperatures. Although the existence of large-scale hot gaseous halos around massive disk galaxies have been theorized for a long time, there is yet very little observational evidence. We report the Chandra and XMM-Newton grating spectral detection of OVII and NeIX Kalpha absorption lines along the sight-line of 4U 1957+11. The line absorption is consistent with the interstellar medium in origin. Attributing these line absorptions to the hot gas associated with the Galactic disk, we search for the gaseous halo around the Milky Way by comparing this sight-line with more distant ones (toward X-ray binary LMC X-3 and the AGN Mrk 421). We find that all the line absorptions along the LMC X-3 and Mrk 421 sight-lines are attributable to the hot gas in a thick Galactic disk, as traced by the absorption lines in the spectra of 4U~1957+11 after a Galactic latitude dependent correction. We constrain the OVII column density through the halo to be N(OVII) < 5E15 cm^{-2} (95% confidence limit), and conclude that the hot gas contribution to the metal line absorptions, if existing, is negligible., Comment: 4 pages, Accepted for publication in the ApJ Letters, no change except for fixing a typo in an author's name

We present high-resolution X-ray spectra of the multiple T Tauri star system Hen 3-600, obtained with the High Energy Transmission Grating Spectrograph on the Chandra X-ray Observatory. Two binary components were detected in the zeroth-order image. Hen 3-600-A, which has a large mid-infrared excess, is a 2-3 times fainter in X-rays than Hen 3-600-B, due to a large flare on B. The dispersed X-ray spectra of the two primary components overlap spatially; spectral analysis was performed on the combined system. Analysis of the individual spectra was limited to regions where the contributions of A and B can be disentangled. This analysis results in two lines of evidence indicating that the X-ray emission from Hen 3-600 is derived from accretion processes: line ratios of O VII indicate that the characteristic density of its X-ray-emitting plasma is large; a significant component of low-temperature plasma is present and is stronger in component A. These results are consistent with results obtained from X-ray gratings spectroscopy of more rapidly accreting systems. All of the signatures of Hen 3-600 that are potential diagnostics of accretion activity -- X-ray emission, UV excess, H-alpha emission, and weak infrared excess -- suggest that its components represent a transition phase between rapidly accreting, classical T Tauri stars and non-accreting, weak-lined T Tauri stars., Comment: latex, 27 pages, 12 figures, 6 tables; accepted by ApJ

[abridged] We report results from four recent observations of the ultracompact LMXB pulsar 4U 1626-67. All the observations obtained high-resolution X-ray spectra of the system, two from the Chandra X-ray Observatory using the HETGS, and two from the XMM-Newton Observatory using the RGS as well as the EPIC PN and MOS. These data allow us to study in detail the prominent Ne and O emission line complexes which make 4U 1626-67 unique among LMXBs. The observations were spaced over a period of 3 years for a total observing time of 238 ks, allowing us to monitor the line regions as well as the overall source flux, continuum spectrum, and timing properties. The structure of the emission lines and the ratios of the components of the helium-like Ne IX and O VII triplets support the hypothesis that they are formed in the high-density environment of the accretion disk. We do not find any significant changes in the line widths or ratios over this time period, though we note that the line equivalent widths decrease. We are able to place constraints on the strengths of the Ne K, Fe L, and O K photoelectric absorption edges, and find that the data do not require an overabundance of Ne or O in the system relative to the expected ISM values. We find that the pulsar is still spinning down, and note that the pulse profile has changed significantly from what was found prior to the torque reversal in 1990, suggesting that this event may be linked to a change in the geometry of the accretion column. The flux of 4U 1626-67 continues to decrease, in keeping with the trend of the last approximately 30 years over which it has been observed. Taking into consideration current theory on disk stability, we expect that 4U 1626-67 will enter a period of quiescence in 2-15 years., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures, submitted to ApJ

Massive stars rarely show intrinsic X-ray variability. The only O-stars credited to be intrinsically variable are theta1 Ori C due to effects from magnetic confinement of its wind, and theta2 Ori A suspected of similar activity. Early Chandra observations have shown that the most massive star system in the Orion Trapezium Cluster, theta2 Ori A, shows rapid variability on time scales of hours. We determine X-ray fluxes and find that the star shows very strong variability over the last 5 years. We observed a second large X-ray outburst in November 2004 with the high resolution transmission grating spectrometer on-board Chandra. In the low state X-ray emissivities indicate temperatures well above 25 MK. In the high state we find an extended emissivity distribution with high emissivities in the range from 3 MK to over 100 MK. The outburst event in stellar terms is one of the most powerful ever observed and the most energetic one in the ONC with a lower total energy limit of 1.5x10^37 ergs. The line diagnostics show that under the assumption that the line emitting regions in the low states are as close as within 1 -- 2 stellar radii from the O-star's photosphere, whereas the hard states suggest a distance of 3 -- 5 stellar radii. The two outbursts are very close to the periastron passage of the stars. We argue that the high X-ray states are possibly the result of reconnection events from magnetic interactions of the primary and secondary stars of the spectroscopic binary. Effects from wind collisions seem unlikely for this system. The low state emissivity and R-ratios strengthen the predicament that the X-ray emission is enhanced by magnetic confinement of the primary wind. We present high-resolution spectroscopy of the neon K-shell and iron L-shell interstellar absorption edges in nine X-ray binaries using the High Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer (HETGS) onboard the Chandra X-ray Observatory. We found that the iron absorption is well fit by an experimental determination of the cross-section for metallic iron, although with a slight wavelength shift of ~20 mA. The neon edge region is best fit by a model that includes the neutral neon edge and three Gaussian absorption lines. We identify these lines as due to the 1s-2p transitions from Ne II, Ne III, and Ne IX. As we found in our oxygen edge study, the theoretical predictions for neutral and low-ionization lines all require shifts of ~20 mA to match our data. Combined with our earlier oxygen edge study, we find that a best fit O/Ne ratio of 5.4+/-1.6, consistent with standard interstellar abundances. Our best fit Fe/Ne ratio of 0.20+/-0.03 is significantly lower than the interstellar value. We attribute this difference to iron depletion into dust grains in the interstellar medium. We make the first measurement of the neon ionization fraction in the ISM. We find Ne II/Ne I ~ 0.3 and Ne III/Ne I ~ 0.07. These values are larger than is expected given the measured ionization of interstellar helium. We test the physical model of the relativistic jets in the galactic X-ray binary SS 433 proposed in our previous paper using additional observations from the Chandra High Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer. These observations sample two new orbital/precessional phase combinations. In the observation near orbital phase zero, the H- and He-like Fe lines from both receding and approaching jets are comparably strong and unocculted while the He-like Si line of the receding jet is significantly weaker than that of the approaching jet. This condition may imply the cooler parts of the receding jet are eclipsed by the companion. The X-ray spectrum from this observation has broader emission lines than obtained in Paper I that may arise from the divergence of a conical outflow or from Doppler shift variations during the observation. Using recent optical results, along with the length of the unobscured portion of the receding jet assuming adiabatic cooling, we calculate the radius of the companion to be 9.6+/-1.0 R_sun, about one third of the Roche lobe radius. For a main sequence star, this corresponds to a companion mass of 35+/-7 M_sun, giving a primary source mass of 20+/-5 M_sun. If our model is correct, this calculation indicates the compact object is a black hole, and accretion occurs through a wind process. Details of the design, fabrication, ground and flight calibration of the High Energy Transmission Grating, HETG, on the Chandra X-ray Observatory are presented after five years of flight experience. Specifics include the theory of phased transmission gratings as applied to the HETG, the Rowland design of the spectrometer, details of the grating fabrication techniques, and the results of ground testing and calibration of the HETG. We investigate the X-ray and near-infrared emission properties of a sample of pre-main sequence (PMS) stellar systems in the Orion Nebula Cluster (ONC) that display evidence for circumstellar disks (``proplyds'') and optical jets in Hubble Space Telescope (HST) imaging. Approximately 70% of ~140 proplyds were detected as X-ray sources in the Chandra Orion Ultradeep Program observation of the ONC, including ~25% of proplyds that do not display central stars in HST imaging. Many proplyds display near-infrared excesses, suggesting disk accretion is ongoing onto the central, PMS stars. Among circumstellar disks that are detected in absorption in HST imaging, we find that X-ray absorbing column and apparent disk inclination are well correlated, providing insight into the disk scale heights and metal abundances of UV- and X-ray-irradiated protoplanetary disks. Jet sources display some of the largest near-infrared excesses among the X-ray-detected proplyds, suggesting that the origin of the jets is closely related to ongoing, PMS stellar accretion. Some jet sources display double-peaked X-ray spectral energy distributions, with soft components indicative of strong shocks in the jet collimation region. These results support models in which circumstellar disks collimate and/or launch jets from young stellar objects and, furthermore, demonstrate that star-disk-jet interactions may contribute to PMS X-ray emission., Comment: 42 pages, 10 figures; accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal Supplements, Special Issue on the Chandra Orion Ultradeep Project (COUP)

In a previous paper we have described a technique to derive constraints on the differential emission measure (DEM) distribution, a measure of the temperature distribution, of collisionally ionized hot plasmas from their X-ray emission line spectra. We apply this technique to the Chandra/HETG spectra of all of the nine hot stars available to us at the time this project was initiated. We find that DEM distributions of six of the seven O stars in our sample are very similar but that theta Ori has an X-ray spectrum characterized by higher temperatures. The DEM distributions of both of B stars in our sample have lower magnitudes than those of the O stars and one, tau Sco, is characterized by higher temperatures than the other, beta Cru. These results confirm previous work in which high temperatures have been found for theta Ori and tau Sco and taken as evidence for channeling of the wind in magnetic fields, the existence of which are related to the stars' youth.
