1. The Effect of Ga-Ion Irradiation on Sub-Micron-Wavelength Spin Waves in Yttrium-Iron-Garnet Films

Abstract

We investigate the effect of focused-ion-beam (FIB) irradiation on spin waves with sub-micron wavelengths in Yttrium-Iron-Garnet (YIG) films. Time-resolved scanning transmission X-ray (TR-STXM) microscopy was used to image the spin waves in irradiated regions and deduce corresponding changes in the magnetic parameters of the film. We find that the changes of Ga$^+$ irradiation can be understood by assuming a few percent change in the effective magnetization $M_\mathrm{eff}$ of the film due to a trade-off between changes in anisotropy and effective film thickness. Our results demonstrate that FIB irradiation can be used to locally alter the dispersion relation and the effective refractive index $n_\textrm{eff}$ of the film, even for submicron wavelengths. To achieve the same change in $n_\textrm{eff}$ for shorter wavelengths, a higher dose is required, but no significant deterioration of spin wave propagation length in the irradiated regions was observed, even at the highest applied doses., Comment: 5 pages, 6 figures

Abstract

The amount of data in the world is expanding rapidly. Every day, huge amounts of data are created by scientific experiments, companies, and end users' activities. These large data sets have been labeled as "Big Data", and their storage, processing and analysis presents a plethora of new challenges to computer science researchers and IT professionals. In addition to efficient data management, additional complexity arises from dealing with semi-structured or unstructured data, and from time critical processing requirements. In order to understand these massive amounts of data, advanced visualization and data exploration techniques are required. Innovative approaches to these challenges have been developed during recent years, and continue to be a hot topic for re-search and industry in the future. An investigation of current approaches reveals that usually only one or two aspects are ad-dressed, either in the data management, processing, analysis or visualization. This paper presents the vision of an integrated plat-form for big data analysis that combines all these aspects. Main benefits of this approach are an enhanced scalability of the whole platform, a better parameterization of algorithms, a more efficient usage of system resources, and an improved usability during the end-to-end data analysis process.

3. Efficient Route Planning with Temporary Driving Bans, Road Closures, and Rated Parking Areas

Abstract

We study the problem of planning routes in road networks when certain streets or areas are closed at certain times. For heavy vehicles, such areas may be very large since many European countries impose temporary driving bans during the night or on weekends. In this setting, feasible routes may require waiting at parking areas, and several feasible routes with different trade-offs between waiting and driving detours around closed areas may exist. We propose a novel model in which driving and waiting are assigned abstract costs, and waiting costs are location-dependent to reflect the different quality of the parking areas. Our goal is to find Pareto-optimal routes with regards to arrival time at the destination and total cost. We investigate the complexity of the model and determine a necessary constraint on the cost parameters such that the problem is solvable in polynomial time. We present a thoroughly engineered implementation and perform experiments on a production-grade real world data set. We study the dynamics of a charged particle in a planar magnetic field which consists of $n\geq 2$ disjoint localized peaks. We show that, under mild geometric conditions, this system is semi-conjugated to the full shift on $n$ symbols and, hence, carries positive topological entropy.

Abstract

Hintergrund: Im Rahmen der Pandemie des SARS-CoV-2-Virus erlangte das Patientenkollektiv der Schwangeren früh Aufmerksamkeit. Initial wurde angesichts sich früh abzeichnender Krankheitsfälle bei jüngeren Patienten mit einem erheblichen Aufkommen peripartal zu betreuender, COVID-19-positiver Schwangerer gerechnet. Ziel der Arbeit: Diese Arbeit vermittelt einen Einblick in die SARS-CoV-2-Infektionszahlen im Rahmen der geburtshilflichen Anästhesie zu Beginn der Pandemie sowie während der zweiten Infektionswelle in Deutschland. Methoden: Über das COALA-Register (COVID-19 related Obstetric Anaesthesia Longitudinal Assessment-Registry) wurden sowohl von März bis Mai 2020 als auch von Oktober 2020 bis Februar 2021 in Deutschland und der Schweiz wöchentlich prospektiv Daten zu Verdachts- und bestätigten SARS-CoV-2-Fällen bei Schwangeren zum Zeitpunkt der Geburt erhoben. Betrachtet wurden die Verteilung dieser auf die Anzahl der Geburten, Zentren und Erhebungswochen sowie mütterliche Charakteristika und Krankheitsverläufe. Ergebnisse: Neun Zentren haben im Verlauf 44 SARS-CoV-2-positive Schwangere zum Zeitpunkt der Geburt bei 7167 Geburten (0,6 %) gemeldet (3 Fälle auf 2270 Geburten (0,4 %) und 41 Fälle auf 4897 Geburten (0,8 %)). Berichtet wurden 2 schwere COVID-19-Verläufe (n= 1 mit Todesfolge nach ECMO, n= 1 mit ECMO überlebt). Bei 28 (68 %) Patientinnen verlief die Infektion asymptomatisch. Ein Neugeborenes wurde im Verlauf positiv auf SARS-CoV‑2 getestet. Schlussfolgerung: Mithilfe des Registers konnte das Auftreten von Fällen zu Beginn der Pandemie zeitnah eingeschätzt werden. Es traten sporadisch Verdachtsfälle bzw. bestätigte Fälle auf. Aufgrund fehlender flächendeckender Testung muss aber von einer Dunkelziffer asymptomatischer Fälle ausgegangen werden. Während der zweiten Infektionswelle wurden 68 % asymptomatische Fälle gemeldet. Jedoch kann es bei jungen, gesunden Patientinnen ohne das Vorliegen typischer Risikofaktoren zu schwerwiegenden Verläufen kommen.

Abstract

Spin-wave based computing requires materials with low Gilbert damping, such as Ni 80 Fe 20 (Permalloy) or yttrium iron garnet, in order to allow for spin-wave propagation on a length scale comparable to the device size. Many devices, especially those that rely on spin–orbit effects for operation, are subject to intense Joule heating, which can exacerbate electromigration and induce local phase changes. Here, the effect of annealing on the Gilbert damping coefficient α of 36 nm Py thin films grown on a Si substrate is examined. Ferromagnetic resonance measurements, high resolution transmission electron microscopy, as well as energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy have been employed to determine α while also studying structural changes in the thin films. The Gilbert damping parameter was found to increase sixfold when annealed at 350 ° C, which was linked to the diffusion of Ni atoms into the Si substrate on a length scale of up to 50 nm. The results demonstrate that magnonic devices have to be treated with caution when Joule heating occurs due to its detrimental effects on the magnonic properties, but the effect can potentially be exploited in the fabrication of magnonic devices by selectively modifying the magnonic damping locally. Abstract

First released in 2010, the Rivet library forms an important repository for analysis code, facilitating comparisons between measurements of the final state in particle collisions and theoretical calculations of those final states. We give an overview of Rivet's current design and implementation, its uptake for analysis preservation and physics results, and summarise recent developments including propagation of MC systematic-uncertainty weights, heavy-ion and $ep$ physics, and systems for detector emulation. In addition, we provide a short user guide that supplements and updates the Rivet user manual.

Abstract

Postdural puncture headache (PDPH) occurs in up to 11% of patients after spinal anesthesia and in more than 80% after dural perforation upon epidural anesthesia. It represents a severe anesthesiological complication in obstetric patients. If conservative medication measures do not result in a timely relief of symptoms, the current guidelines recommend the early implementation of an epidural blood patch; however, although performing an epidural blood patch is effective to treat PDPH, potential side effects include neurological complications, spinal hematoma and infections. Assumed to reduce cerebral vasodilatation as a potential pathophysiological driver of PDPH, the transnasal block of the sphenopalatine ganglion with local anesthetics is discussed as an alternative approach.In this case study a modification of this technique is reported using a mucosal atomization device (MAD) for off-label nasal administration of lidocaine in two obstetric patients suffering from PDPH. Up to now there is no experience with this modified technique in obstetric anesthesiology.The first patient (25-year-old secundigravida, body mass index [BMI] 54.7 kg/mThe described noninvasive and simple procedure represents a valuable addition to previously known treatment options for PDPH and a potential alternative to an epidural blood patch in obstetric patients with PDPH. Prospective studies are needed to validate the findings.HINTERGRUND: Der Postpunktionskopfschmerz („postdural puncture headache“ [PDPH]) stellt eine ernsthafte anästhesiologische Komplikation geburtshilflich behandelter Patientinnen dar. Führen konservativ-medikamentöse Therapieversuche nicht zu einer Symptomlinderung, empfehlen aktuelle Leitlinien die frühzeitige Durchführung eines epiduralen Blut-Patch.
