Die vorliegende Magisterarbeit beschäftigt sich mit dem Jüdischen Nachrichtenblatt, Ausgabe Wien (1939-1943). Das Jüdische Nachrichtenblatt wurde infolge des Novemberpogroms 1938 von Propagandaminister Joseph Goebbels als Verlautbarungsorgan für die jüdische Bevölkerung in Auftrag gegeben. Es gab Ausgaben in Berlin, Wien und Prag. In der historischen Kommunikationsforschung fand die Zeitung bislang nur wenig Beachtung und in der überschaubaren Forschungsliteratur herrscht Uneinigkeit über die Kategorisierung des Mediums als „jüdisch“ oder „nationalsozialistisch“. Diese Problematik wurde im Rahmen der Forschungsarbeit aufgegriffen und anhand von Dokumenten aus dem Archiv der Israelitischen Kultusgemeinde Wien (IKG) aufgeklärt. Die Kontrolle des Jüdischen Nachrichtenblattes, Ausgabe Wien oblag dem Propagandaministerium bzw. dem Sicherheitsdienst (SD) der SS, die Redaktion hatte kaum eigene Entscheidungskompetenzen. Die Behauptung, es handle sich um eine Zeitung, die in der jüdischen Pressetradition vor 1938 steht, konnte demnach widerlegt werden. Weiters wurden die Biografien der verantwortlichen Redakteure der Ausgabe Wien Emil Reich, Maurycy Moses Grün, Leopold Moses und Wilhlem Heublum rekonstruiert und auf deren persönliche Schicksale hingewiesen. Reich, Grün und Moses kamen alle in Auschwitz um, nur Wilhelm Heublum überlebt den NS-Terror. Um herauszufinden wie das Jüdische Nachrichtenblatt, Ausgabe Wien die Lebensrealität der Wiener jüdischen Bevölkerung widerspiegelte, wurde außerdem eine qualitative Inhaltsanalyse nach Philipp Mayring durchgeführt. Der Realitätsbegriff wurde hinsichtlich der Aspekte „Kriegssituation“, „humanitäre und materielle Notlage“ und „antisemitische Verfolgung“ definiert. Mittels der Analysetechnik der inhaltlichen Strukturierung konnte festgestellt werden, dass es zu einer äußerst verzerrten Darstellung der Realität kam. Die Kriegssituation wird bloß am Rande der Berichterstattung erwähnt und die antisemitische Verfolgung nur durch die Veröffentlichung von Verordnungen thematisiert. Lediglich die Notlage der jüdischen Bevölkerung wird aufgrund der Spendenaufrufe und Inserate im Anzeigenteil deutlich. Die verzerrte Darstellung ist auf den nationalsozialistischen Charakter des Mediums zurückzuführen, da die Redakteure die Themen und deren Aufbereitung nicht selbst bestimmen konnten. Somit ist die Kategorisierung des Jüdischen Nachrichtenblattes, Ausgabe Wien als nationalsozialistisches Medium auch aufgrund der empirischen Erhebung gerechtfertigt., This Master’s thesis discusses the history of the newspaper Jüdisches Nachrichtenblatt, Ausgabe Wien (1939-1943). The Jüdisches Nachrichtenblatt was commissioned by the minister of propaganda, Joseph Goebbels, as a result of the “Novemberpogrom” in 1938. Even though there were local editions in Berlin, Vienna and Prague, little attention has been given to this newspaper in the field of historic communication and media studies. Furthermore, researchers disagree on whether it should be categorized as a “Jewish” or “National Socialist” medium. Documents from the archive of the Israelitische Kultusgemeinde Wien were used to shed light on this issue. The research showed that the ministry of propaganda and the “Sicherheitsdienst (SD)” had complete control over the newspaper, which rendered the editorial staff powerless. Therefore, the Jüdisches Nachrichtenblatt, Ausgabe Wien does not belong to the tradition of Jewish newspapers in Vienna prior to 1938, but was part of the National Socialist propaganda. Moreover, the biographies of the editors-in-chief Emil Reich, Maurycy Moses Grün, Leopold Moses and Wilhelm Heublum have been reconstructed to illustrate their shared destinies. Reich, Grün and Moses all died in Auschwitz, only Wilhelm Heublum survived the Nazi terror. In order to find out how the reality of Viennese Jewish life was reflected by the newspaper’s reporting, a qualitative content analysis was conducted in the empirical section of this thesis. The term “reality” was defined by three characteristics: “state of war”, “humanitarian and material crisis” and “anti-Semitic persecution”. The results of the structuring content analysis (acc. to Philipp Mayring) showed a distorted version of Jewish reality in the Ausgabe Wien’s coverage. The state of war was reduced to a side note and the only hints at the persecution of the Jewish people were found in the rules and regulations published by the newspaper. However, the plight of the Jewish community was visible in numerous charity appeals and in the content of the classifieds. This distorted reflection of Jewish life is a result of the National Socialist character of the newspaper, as Jewish Editors were not allowed to decide on the content themselves. Thus, the categorization of the Jüdisches Nachrichtenblatt, Ausgabe Wien as a “National Socialist” newspaper is also supported by the results of the content analysis.

Die vorliegende Masterarbeit beschäftigt sich mit der Darstellung von jüdisch-amerikanischen Protagonisten aus zweiter und dritter Generation und deren Identitätskrise in Kurzgeschichten aus den 1950er Jahren. Für die Analyse werden die Kurzgeschichtensammlungen The Magic Barrel (1958) von Bernard Malamud und Goodbye, Columbus and Five Short Stories (1959) von Philip Roth herangezogen. Der theoretische Hintergrund dieser Masterarbeit setzt sich aus den Bereichen der Judaistik sowie der Männerforschung zusammen. Die Analyse orientiert sich an den Konzepten des Jüdischen Selbsthasses, dem Moralkodex der Menschlichkeit und einem beziehungsorientierten Zugang zu verschiedenen Arten von Männlichkeit. Die Literaturanalyse zeigt, dass die Protagonisten von der amerikanischen Mittelschicht trotz erfolgreicher Assimilation an die Grenze der Gesellschaft gedrängt werden. Sie eifern dem unerreichbaren Ideal von amerikanischer Männlichkeit hinterher und werden von Gefühlen der Unzulänglichkeit geplagt, welche von den Frauen in ihrem Leben noch weiter verstärkt werden. Die Identitätskrisen werden durch Begegnungen mit anderen jüdischen Charakteren ausgelöst und bringen die männlichen Protagonisten dazu, den Stellenwert ihrer jüdischen Herkunft zu überdenken und ihre amerikanische Sozialisation in Frage zu stellen. Ihre Identitätskrisen sind oft von Selbsthass geprägt, welcher durch ein Bekenntnis zur Jüdischen Gemeinschaft überwunden werden können. Die Protagonisten lernen Verantwortung für ihre jüdischen Mitmenschen zu übernehmen und sind somit nicht mehr nur Männer, sondern auch wahre Menschen im Sinne der jüdischen Morallehre. Letzen Endes sind sie dazu in der Lage, die Vielschichtigkeit ihrer männlichen, und sowohl amerikanischen also auch jüdischen, Identität zu akzeptieren., This Master’s thesis examines the identity crises experienced by second or third generation Jewish American male characters in selected short stories from Bernard Malamud’s short story collection The Magic Barrel (1958) and Philip Roth’s short story collection Goodbye, Columbus and Five Short Stories (1959). The theoretical background of this thesis includes concepts from the fields of Jewish studies and masculinity studies. Jewish self-hatred, the moral code of menshlichkeit and a relational approach to the construction of masculinities are guiding the analysis. A close reading of the authors’ short fiction showed that their stories depict middle-class lives that are divided along ethnic and religious lines and the marginalization of Jewish American men is visible through the absence of ties to gentile, white America. At the core of several of the protagonists’ struggles lies a crisis revolving around their Jewish identity, which is inextricably linked to their perception of masculinity. They strive towards the unreachable ideal of hegemonic American masculinity in the face of their own inadequacy. The protagonists’ insecurities are reinforced by their relationship with women. The female characters in these short stories are not only used to further the men’s personal and spiritual development, but they also have the power to emasculate them. Moreover, all of the protagonists’ crises are triggered by fateful encounters with other Jewish characters that make them reconsider the significance of their own Jewishness in their lives and the quality of American middle-class values. The characters’ feelings of self-hatred are often overcome by recognizing their part in the Jewish community and taking responsibility for other members, which is indicative of the moral code of menshlichkeit. Therefore, the question of “Man or Mensch?” needs to be replaced by the statement “Man and Mensch”, which exemplifies the male characters’ multi-layered masculine and national identities.
