Abstract

We investigate laser cooling of an ensemble of atoms in an optical cavity. We demonstrate that when atomic dipoles are sychronized in the regime of steady-state superradiance, the motion of the atoms may be subject to a giant frictional force leading to potentially very low temperatures. The ultimate temperature limits are determined by a modified atomic linewidth, which can be orders of magnitude smaller than the cavity linewidth. The cooling rate is enhanced by the superradiant emission into the cavity mode allowing reasonable cooling rates even for dipolar transitions with ultranarrow linewidth.

Abstract

Tribolium castaneum is a member of the most species-rich eukaryotic order, a powerful model organism for the study of generalized insect development, and an important pest of stored agricultural products. We describe its genome sequence here. This omnivorous beetle has evolved the ability to interact with a diverse chemical environment, as shown by large expansions in odorant and gustatory receptors, as well as P450 and other detoxification enzymes. Development in Tribolium is more representative of other insects than is Drosophila, a fact reflected in gene content and function. For example, Tribolium has retained more ancestral genes involved in cell-cell communication than Drosophila, some being expressed in the growth zone crucial for axial elongation in short-germ development. Systemic RNA interference in T. castaneum functions differently from that in Caenorhabditis elegans, but nevertheless offers similar power for the elucidation of gene function and identification of targets for selective insect control.

Abstract

In this article, we apply autonomic and distributed management principles to wireless access networks. Most interesting is the application of autonomic properties and behaviors including adaptive, aware, and automatic operation in a decentralized setting. In particular, we present a generic and autonomic management architecture for decentralized management of wireless access networks, such as GERAN/UTRAN, E-UTRAN, WiMAX or WLAN. For evaluation purposes, we apply this architecture to the management of a Wireless LAN network, and we evaluate the architecture and some of the autonomic management functions through simulations, a prototype implementation and the setup of a real-world testbed for experimentation with the proposed management approach. 42. Inheritance of Tassel Branch Number in Maize1

Abstract

We studied the inheritance of tassel branch number in maize (Zea maysL.) by analyzing data collected from five generations (P1, P2, F1, F2, and F3) of a cross involving two inbred lines that differed significantly for tassel branch number. Estimates of genetic effects and genetic variance components were obtained from generation mean analyses and expectations for generation variances, respectively. Our data indicated that: 1) tassel branch number was quantitatively inherited (minimum of eight genetic factors involved), 2) high tassel branch number was dominant to low tassel branch number (data from crosses involving other parental inbreds showed the expression of dominance was genotype dependent), 3) no reciprocal effects were detectable, 4) additive gene action was most important, but dominant gene action should be evaluated carefully in future studies, and 5) heritability estimates were high, suggesting selection for tassel branch number should be possible.
