Abstract

Interest in the role of casuistry and casuistical questions in Kant's "Doctrine of Virtue" ("DV"), i.e. the second part of the "Metaphysics of Morals," has grown in recent years. My own position is formulated in Schuessler (2012, in German), the main thesis of which will be retained here in an updated form and with some shifts of emphasis. I hold that the casuistical questions concerning perfect duties in the DV are not intended to represent casuistry in Kant's sense. Casuistry and casuistical questions are neither equivalent in the "DV" nor do they serve the same purposes.

Abstract

In this chapter, the editors bring together insights from the individual chapters, to draw a number of lessons regarding the role(s) of focal points in negotiations. Focality can be used to gain a strategic advantage during the negotiation process, either by starting a dynamic that favors one’s own cause, or to block any such dynamics from getting off the ground if they are deemed detrimental to one's interests. Focal points do more than serve such tactical purposes, however. They can also have an important function in effectively communicating the outcome of negotiations to the wider public and even serve distinctly moral purposes, contributing to the emergence of fair solutions to situations characterized by reasonable moral disagreement.

Abstract

This chapter introduces the notion of focal points and juxtaposes the standard contexts in which focal points are usually analyzed (mathematical game theory, especially coordination games, and carefully controlled experimental laboratory settings) with the practical contexts of negotiations. It highlights the fundamental differences between these contexts, establishing the need of examining in detail the way focal points function in complex, real world settings. Making the case that negotiations offer a directly practical field where the importance of salience and focality is evident, it also shows that the ways focal points function in negotiations are much richer and more varied than an exclusive preoccupation with the context of pure coordination may initially suggest.

43. A deprivation-based assessment of energy poverty: Conceptual problems and application to Germany

Abstract

In this paper, subjective and objective aspects of deprivation are used to derive an aggregated multidimensional measure of energy poverty. The proposed measure is based on deprivation with a direct relation to energy consumption, but it also accounts for excessive financial restrictions due to energy costs, it gives priority to low income households, and controls for economic energy use. Based on logistic regression, we find strong effects of income and energy expenditure on the likelihood of energy deprivation in Germany, but these variables only partially constitute energy poverty. Other aspects, e.g. employment status or housing conditions, play an important role as well.

Abstract

Social epistemology existed in the scholastic tradition in the shape of doctrines on the legitimate use of probable opinions. Medieval scholasticism had developed sophisticated approaches in this respect, but the apogee of scholastic theoretical reflection on social epistemology occurred in the Baroque era and its Catholic moral theology (late sixteenth to eighteenth centuries). The huge debate on probable opinions at that time produced the most far-reaching and deepest investigations into the moral and epistemological foundations and limitations of opinion-based, reasonable discourse prior to the late twentieth century. It is time to recover the arguments and claims of Baroque scholastic social epistemology, not only to fill a lacuna in intellectual history but also to see whether some of its challenges are still with us today.
