Strong light fields have created spectacular opportunities to tailor novel functionalities of solids. Floquet-Bloch states can form under periodic driving of electrons and enable exotic quantum phases. On subcycle time scales, lightwaves can simultaneously drive intraband currents and interband transitions, which enable high-harmonic generation (HHG) and pave the way towards ultrafast electronics. Yet, the interplay of intra- and interband excitations as well as their relation with Floquet physics have been key open questions as dynamical aspects of Floquet states have remained elusive. Here we provide this pivotal link by pioneering the ultrafast buildup of Floquet-Bloch bands with time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. We drive surface states on a topological insulator with mid-infrared fields - strong enough for HHG - and directly monitor the transient band structure with subcycle time resolution. Starting with strong intraband currents, we observe how Floquet sidebands emerge within a single optical cycle; intraband acceleration simultaneously proceeds in multiple sidebands until high-energy electrons scatter into bulk states and dissipation destroys the Floquet bands. Quantum nonequilibrium calculations explain the simultaneous occurrence of Floquet states with intra- and interband dynamics. We present a complementary experimental and theoretical investigation of relaxation dynamics in the charge-density-wave (CDW) system TbTe$_3$ after ultrafast optical excitation. Using time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we observe an unusual transient modulation of the relaxation rates of excited photocarriers. A detailed analysis of the electron self-energy based on a nonequilibrium Green's function formalism reveals that the phase space of electron-electron scattering is critically modulated by the photoinduced collective CDW excitation, providing an intuitive microscopic understanding of the observed dynamics and revealing the impact of the electronic band structure on the self-energy., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

Staring from the kicked rotator as a paradigm for a system exhibiting classical chaos, we discuss the role of quantum coherence resulting in dynamical localization in the kicked quantum rotator. In this context, the disorder-induced Anderson localization is also discussed. In contrast to the Hubbard model, the extended Hubbard model, which additionally accounts for non-local interactions, lacks systemic studies of thermodynamic properties especially across the metal-insulator transition. Using a variational principle, we perform such a systematic study and describe how non-local interactions screen local correlations differently in the Fermi-liquid and in the insulator. The thermodynamics reveal that non-local interactions are at least in parts responsible for first-order metal-insulator transitions in real materials., Comment: 19 pages, 9 figures. Using ab-initio calculations we reveal the nature of the insulating phase recently found experimentally in monolayer 1T-NbSe$_2$. We find soft phonon modes in a large parts of the Brillouin zone indicating the strong-coupling nature of a charge-density-wave instability. Structural relaxation of a $\sqrt{13}\times\sqrt{13}$ supercell reveals a Star-of-David reconstruction with an energy gain of 60 meV per primitive unit cell. The band structure of the distorted phase exhibits a half-filled flat band which is associated with orbitals that are delocalized over several atoms in each Star of David. By including many-body corrections through a combined GW, hybrid-functional, and DMFT treatment, we find the flat band to split into narrow Hubbard bands. The lowest energy excitation across the gap turns out to be between itinerant Se-$p$ states and the upper Hubbard band, determining the system to be a charge-transfer insulator. Combined hybrid-functional and GW calculations show that long-range interactions shift the Se-$p$ states to lower energies. Thus, a delicate interplay of local and long-range correlations determines the gap nature and its size in this distorted phase of the monolayer 1T-NbSe$_2$., Comment: 10 pages, 11 figures

Many-body localization (MBL) is an emergent phase in correlated quantum systems with promis- ing applications, particularly in quantum information. Here, we unveil the existence and analyse this phase in a chiral multiferroic model system. Conventionally, MBL occurrence is traced via level statistics by implementing a standard finite-size scaling procedure. Here, we present an approach based on the full distribution of the ratio of adjacent energy spacings. We find a strong broadening of the histograms of counts of these level spacings directly at the transition point from MBL to the ergodic phase. The broadening signals reliably the transition point without relying on an averaging procedure. The fast convergence of the histograms even for relatively small systems allows moni- toring the MBL dynamics with much less computational effort. Numerical results are presented for a chiral spin chain with a dynamical Dzyaloshinskii Moriya (DM) interaction, an established model to describe the spin excitations in a single phase spin-driven multiferroic system. Nanostructures with open shell transition metal or molecular constituents host often strong electronic correlations and are highly sensitive to atomistic material details. This tutorial review discusses method developments and applications of theoretical approaches for the realistic description of the electronic and magnetic properties of nanostructures with correlated electrons. First, the implementation of a flexible interface between density functional theory and a variant of dynamical mean field theory (DMFT) highly suitable for the simulation of complex correlated structures is explained and illustrated. On the DMFT side, this interface is largely based on recent developments of quantum Monte Carlo and exact diagonalization techniques allowing for efficient descriptions of general four fermion Coulomb interactions, reduced symmetries and spin-orbit coupling, which are explained here. With the examples of the Cr (001) surfaces, magnetic adatoms, and molecular systems it is shown how the interplay of Hubbard U and Hund's J determines charge and spin fluctuations and how these interactions drive different sorts of correlation effects in nanosystems. Non-local interactions and correlations present a particular challenge for the theory of low dimensional systems. We present our method developments addressing these two challenges, i.e., advancements of the dynamical vertex approximation and a combination of the constrained random phase approximation with continuum medium theories. While the Hubbard model is the standard model to study Mott metal-insulator transitions, it is still unclear to which extent it can describe metal-insulator transitions in real solids, where non-local Coulomb interactions are always present. By using a variational principle, we clarify this issue for short- and long-ranged non-local Coulomb interactions for half-filled systems on bipartite lattices. We find that repulsive non-local interactions generally stabilize the Fermi-liquid regime. The metal-insulator phase boundary is shifted to larger interaction strengths to leading order linearly with non-local interactions. Importantly, non-local interactions can raise the order of the metal-insulator transition. We present a detailed analysis of how the dimension and geometry of the lattice as well as the temperature determine the critical non-local interaction leading to a first-order transition: for systems in more than two dimensions with non-zero density of states at the Fermi energy the critical non-local interaction is arbitrarily small; otherwise it is finite., Comment: 10 pages, 11 figures

In this paper we study the time evolution of the entanglement between two remote NV Centers (nitrogen vacancy in diamond) connected by a dual-mode nanomechanical resonator with magnetic tips on both sides. Calculating the negativity as a measure for the entanglement, we find that the entanglement between two spins oscillates with time and can be manipulated by varying the parameters of the system. We observed the phe- nomenon of a sudden death and the periodic revivals of entanglement in time. For the study of quantum deco- herence, we implement a Lindblad master equation. In spite of its complexity, the model is analytically solvable under fairly reasonable assumptions, and shows that the decoherence influences the entanglement, the sudden death, and the revivals in time., Comment: to appear in J.Phys. Recent experimental progress in creating and controlling singular electron beams that carry orbital angular momentum allows for new types of local spectroscopies. We theoretically investigate the twisted-electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) from the C60 fullerene. Of particular interest are the strong multipolar collective excitations and their selective response to the orbital angular momentum of the impinging electron beam. Based on ab-initio calculations for the collective response we compute EELS signals with twisted electron beams and uncover the interplay between the plasmon polarity and the amount of angular momentum transfer., Comment: to appear in Phys. A quantum thermodynamic cycle with a chiral multiferroic working substance such as $\textrm{LiCu}_{2}\textrm{O}_{2}$ is presented. Shortcuts to adiabaticity are employed to achieve an efficient, finite time quantum thermodynamic cycle which is found to depend on the spin ordering. The emergent electric polarization associated with the chiral spin order, i.e. the magnetoelectric coupling, renders possible steering of the spin order by an external electric field and hence renders possible an electric-field control of the cycle. Due to the intrinsic coupling between of the spin and the electric polarization, the cycle performs an electro-magnetic work. We determine this work's mean square fluctuations, the irreversible work, and the output power of the cycle. We observe that the work mean square fluctuations are increased with the duration of the adiabatic strokes while the irreversible work and the output power of the cycle show a non-monotonic behavior. In particular the irreversible work vanishes at the end of the quantum adiabatic strokes. This fact confirms that the cycle is reversible. Our theoretical findings evidence the existence of a system inherent maximal output power. By implementing a Lindblad master equation we quantify the role of thermal relaxations on the cycle efficiency. We investigate the Peierls-Feynman-Bogoliubov variational principle to map Hubbard models with nonlocal interactions to effective models with only local interactions. We study the renormalization of the local interaction induced by nearest-neighbor interaction and assess the quality of the effective Hubbard models in reproducing observables of the corresponding extended Hubbard models. We compare the renormalization of the local interactions as obtained from numerically exact determinant Quantum Monte Carlo to approximate but more generally applicable calculations using dual boson, dynamical mean field theory, and the random phase approximation. These more approximate approaches are crucial for any application with real materials in mind. Furthermore, we use the dual boson method to calculate observables of the extended Hubbard models directly and benchmark these against determinant Quantum Monte Carlo simulations of the effective Hubbard model., Comment: 12 pages, 10 figures

We report on the quenching of single Ni adatom moments on Te-terminated Bi2Te2Se and Bi2Te3 topological insulator surfaces. The effect becomes manifested as a missing X-ray magnetic circular dichroism for resonant L3,2 transitions into partially filled Ni 3d states of occupancy n_d = 9.2. On the basis of a comparative study of Ni and Fe using scanning tunneling microscopy and ab initio calculations we are able to relate the element specific moment formation to a local Stoner criterion. While Fe adatoms form large spin moments of m_s = 2.54 mu_B with out-of-plane anisotropy due to a sufficiently large density of states at the Fermi energy, Ni remains well below an effective Stoner threshold for local moment formation. With the Fermi level remaining in the bulk band gap after adatom deposition, non-magnetic Ni and preferentially out-of-plane oriented magnetic Fe with similar structural properties on Bi2Te2Se surfaces constitute a perfect platform to study off-on effects of time-reversal symmetry breaking on topological surface states.

The electronic structure of the Cr(001) surface with its sharp resonance at the Fermi level is a subject of controversial debate of many experimental and theoretical works. To date, it is unclear whether the origin of this resonance is an orbital Kondo or an electron-phonon coupling effect. We have combined ab initio density functional calculations with dynamical mean-field simulations to calculate the orbitally resolved spectral function of the Cr(001) surface. The calculated orbital character and shape of the spectrum is in agreement with data from (inverse) photoemission experiments. We find that dynamic electron correlations crucially influence the surface electronic structure and lead to a low energy resonance in the $d_{z^2}$ and $d_{xz/yz}$ orbitals. This work provides a unified theoretical treatment of the single and correlated double-electron emission from a general electronic system. Using Feshbach projection method, the states of interest are selected by the projection operator; the Feshbach-Schur map determines the effective Hamiltonian and the optical potential for the emitted electrons. On the other hand, the nonequilibrium Green's functions method is demonstrated to be a complementary approach and an explicit correspondence between both methods is established. For a self-contained exposition some results on single electron emission are re-derived using both formalisms. New insights and results are obtained for the correlated electron-pair emission: This includes the effective two-electron Hamiltonian, the explicit form of the Feshbach self-energy in terms of the many-body self-energies, and the diagrammatic expansion of the two-particle current. As an illustration of the diagrammatic technique the process of the two-particle emission assisted by the excitation of plasmons is explicitly worked out., Comment: 8 figures

We describe a variational approach to solving Anderson impurity models by means of exact diagonalization. Optimized parameters of a discretized auxiliary model are obtained on the basis of the Peierls-Feynman-Bogoliubov principle. Thereby, the variational approach resolves ambiguities related with the bath discretization, which is generally necessary to make Anderson impurity models tractable by exact diagonalization. The choice of variational degrees of freedom made here allows systematic improvements of total energies over mean field decouplings like Hartree-Fock. Furthermore, our approach allows us to embed arbitrary bath discretization schemes in total energy calculations and to systematically optimize and improve on traditional routes to the discretization problem such as fitting of hybridization functions on Matsubara frequencies. Benchmarks in terms of a single orbital Anderson model demonstrate that the variational exact diagonalization method accurately reproduces free energies as well as several single- and two-particle observables obtained from an exact solution. Finally, we demonstrate the applicability of the variational exact diagonalization approach to realistic five orbital problems with the example system of Co impurities in bulk Cu and compare to continuous-time Monte Carlo calculations. For tracing the spatiotemporal evolution of electronic systems, we suggest and analyze theoretically a setup that exploits the excellent spatial resolution based on scanning tunneling microscopy techniques combined with the temporal resolution of femtosecond pump-probe photoelectron spectroscopy. As an example, we consider the laser-induced, local vibrational dynamics of a surface-adsorbed molecule. The photoelectrons released by a laser pulse can be collected by the scanning tip and utilized to access the spatiotemporal dynamics. To understand how nonlocal Coulomb interactions affect the phase diagram of correlated electron materials, we report on a method to approximate a correlated lattice model with nonlocal interactions by an effective Hubbard model with on-site interactions U* only. The effective model is defined by the Peierls-Feynman-Bogoliubov variational principle. We find that the local part of the interaction U is reduced according to U*=U-V', where V' is a weighted average of nonlocal interactions. For graphene, silicene and benzene we show that the nonlocal Coulomb interaction can decrease the effective local interaction by more than a factor of 2 in a wide doping range., Comment: Accepted for publication in PRL.
