Abstract

Limitations of the pulse-shape discrimination (PSD) technique - a promising method to identify the charged particles stopped in planar Si-detectors - have been investigated. The particle resolution turned out to be basically determined by resistivity fluctuations in the bulk silicon which cause the charge-collection time to depend on the point of impact. Detector maps showing these fluctuations have been measured and are discussed. Furthermore we present a simple method to test the performance of detectors with respect to PSD. Another limitation of the PSD technique is the finite energy threshold for particle identification. This threshold is caused by an unexpected decrease of the total charge-collection time for ions with a short range, in spite of the fact that the particle tracks are located in a region of very low electric field.

Abstract

Pulse-shape discrimination with totally depleted Si-detectors in reverse mount has been investigated and shown to be an excellent method of charged-particle identification in the energy range of [approximately equal to] 2 to 20 AMeV. In test experiments with heavy-ion beams we obtained element identification up to Ti and isotope resolution even for elements heavier than carbon. The promising results and the simplicity of the electronics recommend this technique for applications in multidetector arrays. In particular, small and compact 4[Pi] Si balls with relatively low thresholds for charged-particle identification to be combined with 4[Pi] neutron detectors or [Gamma] arrays can be constructed.

Abstract

High-spin states of the neutron deficient 100 Pd nucleus have been investigated via the 50 Cr( 58 Ni, 4p α ) and 70 Zn( 36 S,6n) heavy-ion induced reactions. For the detection of evaporated particles and γ rays the Nordball array equipped with ancillary detectors and the Eurogam II detector system were utilized. By the use of in-beam spectroscopic methods 89 transitions belonging to 100 Pd have been observed, 49 of which were identified for the first time. The level scheme has been extended up to E x ≈16 MeV excitation energy and I≈25 ℏ . The experimental results were compared with the predictions of cranked shell model calculations. Maximal spin alignments were found in the (πg 9/2 ) −4 12 + (νd 5/2 ,g 7/2 3 h 11/2 ) 13 − and (πg 9/2 −3 p 1/2 ) 11 − (νd 5/2 ,g 7/2 3 h 11/2 ) 13 − configurations. Possible existence of octupole correlations is discussed on the basis of B( E 1)/B( E 2) values deduced for the decays of high-spin levels in the yrast negative-parity band. (Elsevier)
