Abstract

Background Increasing attention has been drawn on the assessment of body composition phenotypes, since the distribution of soft tissue influences cardio-metabolic risk. Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) is a validated technique to assess body composition. European reference values from population-based cohorts are rare. Aims To provide age- and sex-related reference values of body composition parameters and visceral adipose tissue (VAT) mass, and for lean mass index (LMI) with regard to fat mass index (FMI) quantities and BMI categories. Methods GE-Lunar Prodigy DXA scans of 10.894 participants, aged 18-81 years, recruited from 2011 to 2019 by the Austrian LEAD study, a population-based cohort study, have been used to construct reference curves using the LMS method. Parameters assessed are FMI, LMI, appendicular LMI, fat mass ratios android/gynoid and trunk/limbs, and VAT. Results All lean mass and fat mass parameters indicating central fat accumulation were higher in men, whereas other fat mass indices were higher in women. LMI differed between each FMI subgroup (low vs. normal, low vs. high, normal vs. high), and BMI category in all ages and LMI increased with FMI and BMI classes. VAT mass was higher in men compared with women and increased across all age groups within both sexes. Conclusion The present study provides age- and sex-related reference values for European adults aged 18-81 years for body composition parameters and VAT mass for Lunar Prodigy DXA. Abstract

Background DXA is a widely used technique to assess body composition. Reference values based on a large general population cohort of European children and adolescents were missing. The aim of this study was to provide age- and sex-specific reference percentiles of body composition parameters for European children and adolescents and to compare them to the American NHANES cohort. Additionally, exponents accounting best for height biases were analysed. Methods DXA scans of 1573 participants, aged 6 to 18 years, recruited from 2011 to 2019 by the Austrian LEAD study, a representative population-based cohort, have been used to create reference charts using the LMS model. Results Reference charts displaying percentile curves and the corresponding reference values are provided. Fat mass parameters were higher in females, while lean mass parameters were higher in males. Compared to theNHANEScohort medians ofFMIandLMIwere always lower. ForFMI,BMI,LMIandALMIthe best fitting exponent were 2.5, 3, 3 and 3.5 respectively Conclusions The present study provides reference charts for children and adolescents aged 6 to 18 years, for body composition parameters assessed by DXA. The charts enable comparison to a European general-population cohort and indicate that reference populations should be chosen with caution.

Abstract

This paper discusses media impact in referendum campaigns and presents two research projects currently in process at the University of Zurich, Switzerland, partially in cooperation with Stanford University, USA, out of which first findings will be on hand in June 2006. Central questions of the research projects presented are questions about the role of news media in referendum campaigns, and how news media cover the referendum process and the consequences of its intervention in this process. Although considerable research has tended to focus on influencing factors for voting behaviour and so the outcome of referenda, very little attention has been paid to the influences through media coverage. Furthermore, apart from very high normative demands on the information function of mass media in democratic societies, little is, however, known about the effective information performance of media coverage in referendum processes. Abstract

Although considerable research has been devoted to the pervasive influence of mass media on modern society and democracy, what is oftentimes labelled as "mediatization", rather less attention has been paid to the preconditions of media impact on structures, processes, and actors. In this paper, we focus on the preconditions of mediatization in the case of political negotiating institutions and present a model of influencing factors, which is dedicated as an empirical instrument for measuring the probability of mediatization effects. Our basic assumption is that the operational logic of negotiating institutions conflicts with media logic, what facilitates the observation of mediatization processes and its effects. Additionally, it is assumed that an intense media attention is in fact a necessary condition for mediatization of negotiating institutions, but not a sufficient one. The findings suggest that even for negotiating institutions which are in the central focus of media attention, no general mediatization can be proposed. In four case studies it is exemplarily shown, that mediatization effects depend fundamentally on the specific institutional preconditions and not only, what is oftentimes assumed, on media system itself. ..PAT.-Conference Proceeding [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

28. Campaigning Swiss Referenda: Are There Spillover-Effects From Candidate Campaigns?

Abstract

It is hard to find another business that is booming like campaign industry: The role of political professional services in all levels of electoral politics is expanding. What does this mean for the functioning of a well-developed referendum democracy? We answer this question on the basis of a long-term study on media coverage of referendum processes in Switzerland. We expect that even in the Swiss case professional campaigning supersedes the traditional "amateur procedure" and brings referenda campaigns more and more in line with candidate campaigns. On basis of the existing state of research this assumption is quite plausible. It is plausible seeing that for journalists it is much easier to fall back on contents provided by professional campaigners. However, it is not plausible prima facie for the Swiss case because of the fact that Swiss people are used to hold a vote on substantive policy issues and that they know the differences between candidate and issue voting very well. ..PAT.-Unpublished Manuscript [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
