1. Partially wrapped Fukaya categories of orbifold surfaces

Abstract

We give a complete description of partially wrapped Fukaya categories of graded orbifold surfaces with stops. We show that a construction via global sections of a natural cosheaf of A$_\infty$ categories on a Lagrangian core of the surface is equivalent to a global construction via the (equivariant) orbit category of a smooth cover. We therefore establish the local-to-global properties of partially wrapped Fukaya categories of orbifold surfaces closely paralleling a proposal by Kontsevich for Fukaya categories of smooth Weinstein manifolds. From the viewpoint of Weinstein sectorial descent in the sense of Ganatra, Pardon and Shende, our results show that orbifold surfaces also have Weinstein sectors of type $\mathrm D$ besides the type $\mathrm A$ or type $\widetilde{\mathrm A}$ sectors on smooth surfaces. We describe the global sections of the cosheaf explicitly for any generator given by an admissible dissection of the orbifold surface and we give a full classification of the formal generators which arise in this way. This shows in particular that the partially wrapped Fukaya category of an orbifold surface can always be described as the perfect derived category of a graded associative algebra. We conjecture that associative algebras obtained from dissections of orbifold surfaces form a new class of associative algebras closed under derived equivalence., Comment: 76 pages, 35 figures, comments are very welcome

Abstract

The Tamarkin Tsygan calculus of a finite dimensional algebra is a differential calculus given by the comprehensive data of the Hochschild cohomology, its structure both as a graded commutative algebra under the cup product and as a graded Lie algebra under the Gerstenhaber bracket, together with the Hochschild homology and its module structure over the Hochschild cohomology given by the cap product as well as the Connes differential. In this paper, we calculate the whole of the Tamarkin Tsygan calculus for the class of gentle algebras. Apart from some isolated calculations, this is, to our knowledge, the first complete calculation of this calculus for a family of finite dimensional algebras. Gentle algebras appear in many different areas of mathematics such as the theory of cluster algebras, N=2 gauge theories and homological mirror symmetry of surfaces. For the latter Haiden-Katzarkov-Kontsevich show that the partially wrapped Fukaya category of a graded surface is triangle equivalent to the perfect derived category of a graded gentle algebra. Thus the symplectic cohomology of the surface should be linked to the Hochschild cohomology of the gentle algebra. We give a description of how this connection might be visualised, in that, we show how these structures are encoded in the geometric surface model of the bounded derived category associated to a gentle algebra via its ribbon graph. Finally, we show how to recover structural results for a gentle algebra given its Tamarkin-Tsygan calculus., Comment: 109 pages, 13 figures, 6 tables

3. Posets for $F$-polynomials in cluster algebras from surfaces

Abstract

We prove a simple formula for arbitrary cluster variables in the marked surfaces model. As part of the formula, we associate a labeled poset to each tagged arc, such that the associated $F$-polynomial is a weighted sum of order ideals. Each element of the poset has a weight, and the weight of an ideal is the product of the weights of the elements of the ideal. In the unpunctured case, the weight on each element is a single $\hat{y}_i$, in the usual sense of principal coefficients. In the presence of punctures, some elements may have weights of the form $\hat{y}_i/\hat{y}_j$. Our search for such a formula was inspired by the Fundamental Theorem of Finite Distributive Lattices combined with work of Gregg Musiker, Ralf Schiffler, and Lauren Williams that, in some cases, organized the terms of the $F$-polynomial into a distributive lattice. The proof consists of a simple and poset-theoretically natural argument in a special case, followed by a hyperbolic geometry argument using a cover of the surface to prove the general case., Comment: 43 pages, 41 figures. Abstract

We show that among the derived equivalent classes of homologically smooth and proper graded gentle algebras there is only one class whose perfect derived category does not admit silting objects. This allows us to construct a family of examples where a pre-silting object cannot be completed into a silting object. As another application we confirm a conjecture by Lekili and Polishchuk that the geometric invariants which they construct for homologically smooth and proper graded gentle algebras are a complete derived invariant., Comment: 19 pages

Abstract

Let $KQ$ be a path algebra, where $Q$ is a finite quiver and $K$ is a field. We study $KQ/C$ where $C$ is the two-sided ideal in $KQ$ generated by all differences of parallel paths in $Q$. We show that $KQ/C$ is always finite dimensional and its global dimension is finite. Furthermore, we prove that $KQ/C$ is Morita equivalent to an incidence algebra. The paper starts with the more general setting, where $KQ$ is replaced by $KQ/I$ with $I$ a two-sided ideal in $KQ$.

10. Braid group actions on branched coverings and full exceptional sequences

Abstract

We relate full exceptional sequences in Fukaya categories of surfaces or equivalently in derived categories of graded gentle algebras to branched coverings over the disk, building on a previous classification result of the first and third author. This allows us to apply tools from the theory of branched coverings such as Birman--Hilden theory and Hurwitz systems to study the natural braid group action on exceptional sequences. As an application, counterexamples are given to a conjecture of Bondal--Polishchuk on the transitivity of the braid group action on full exceptional sequences in a triangulated category., Comment: v2: added Corollary 1.4, Question 5.6, further references, other minor changes

The effect of hemoglobin level at ICU admission on a composite outcome of cardiac arrest or stroke in an international cohort of COVID-19 patients was investigated. DESIGN:. Anemia was defined as: normal (hemoglobin ≥ 12.0 g/dL for women, ≥ 13.5 g/dL for men), mild (hemoglobin 10.0–11.9 g/dL for women, 10.0–13.4 g/dL for men), moderate (hemoglobin ≥ 8.0 and < 10.0 g/dL for women and men), and severe (hemoglobin < 8.0 g/dL for women and men). PATIENTS:. Patients older than 18 years with acute COVID-19 infection in the ICU. INTERVENTIONS:. None. MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS:. Of 6926 patients (median age = 59 yr, male = 65%), 760 patients (11.0%) experienced stroke (2.0%) and/or cardiac arrest (9.4%). Cardiac arrest or stroke was more common in patients with low hemoglobin, occurring in 12.8% of patients with normal hemoglobin, 13.3% of patients with mild anemia, and 16.7% of patients with moderate/severe anemia. Time to stroke or cardiac arrest by anemia status was analyzed using Cox proportional hazards regression with death as a competing risk. Covariates selected through clinical knowledge were age, sex, comorbidities (diabetes, hypertension, obesity, and cardiac or neurologic conditions), pandemic era, country income, mechanical ventilation, and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation. Moderate/severe anemia was associated with a higher risk of cardiac arrest or stroke (hazard ratio, 1.32; 95% CI, 1.05–1.67). CONCLUSIONS:. In an international registry of ICU patients with COVID-19, moderate/severe anemia was associated with increased hazard of cardiac arrest or stroke.

Abstract

Abstract Research into the molecular basis of disease trajectory and Long-COVID is important to get insights toward underlying pathophysiological processes. The objective of this study was to investigate inflammation-mediated changes of metabolism in patients with acute COVID-19 infection and throughout a one-year follow up period. The study enrolled 34 patients with moderate to severe COVID-19 infection admitted to the University Clinic of Innsbruck in early 2020. The dynamics of multiple laboratory parameters (including inflammatory markers [C-reactive protein (CRP), interleukin-6 (IL-6), neopterin] as well as amino acids [tryptophan (Trp), phenylalanine (Phe) and tyrosine (Tyr)], and parameters of iron and vitamin B metabolism) was related to disease severity and patients’ physical performance. Also, symptom load during acute illness and at approximately 60 days (FU1), and one year after symptom onset (FU2) were monitored and related with changes of the investigated laboratory parameters: During acute infection many investigated laboratory parameters were elevated (e.g., inflammatory markers, ferritin, kynurenine, phenylalanine) and enhanced tryptophan catabolism and phenylalanine accumulation were found. At FU2 nearly all laboratory markers had declined back to reference ranges. However, kynurenine/tryptophan ratio (Kyn/Trp) and the phenylalanine/tyrosine ratio (Phe/Tyr) were still exceeding the 95th percentile of healthy controls in about two thirds of our cohort at FU2. Lower tryptophan concentrations were associated with B vitamin availability (during acute infection and at FU1), patients with lower vitamin B12 levels at FU1 had a prolonged and more severe impairment of their physical functioning ability. Patients who had fully recovered (ECOG 0) presented with higher concentrations of iron parameters (ferritin, hepcidin, transferrin) and amino acids (phenylalanine, tyrosine) at FU2 compared to patients with restricted ability to work. Persistent symptoms at FU2 were tendentially associated with IFN-γ related parameters. Women were affected by long-term symptoms more frequently. Conclusively, inflammation-mediated biochemical changes appear to be related to symptoms of patients with acute and Long Covid.

Abstract

Saprotrophic fungi, key players in global carbon cycling, have been identified as methane (CH4) sources not yet accounted for in the global CH4 budget. This study, for the first time, explores the influence of oxygen (O2) and temperature on CH4 production by two fungi, Laetiporus sulphureus and Pleurotus sapidus. To explore the relationship between these parameters and fungal CH4 formation, we examined CH4 formation under varying O2 levels (0 to 98%) and temperatures (17, 27, and 40 °C) during fungal growth on pine wood, beech wood, and grass under sterile conditions. Our findings show that fungal CH4 formation strongly depends on O2 levels. Methane formation was highest when O2 levels exceeded 5%, whilst no CH4 formation was observed after complete O2 consumption. Reintroducing O2 immediately resumed fungal CH4 production. Methane formation normalized to O2 consumption (CH4_norm) showed a different pattern. L. sulphureus showed higher CH4_norm rates with higher O2 levels, whereas P. sapidus showed elevated rates between 0 and 5%. Temperature also significantly influenced CH4 and CH4_norm rates, with the highest production at 27 °C, and comparatively lower rates at 17 and 40 °C. These findings demonstrate the importance of O2 levels and temperature in fungal CH4 emissions, which are essential for refining CH4 source predictions.

Abstract Human tendons adapt to mechanical loading, yet there is little information on the effect of the temporal coordination of loading and recovery or the dose–response relationship. For this reason, we assigned adult men to either a control or intervention group. In the intervention group, the two legs were randomly assigned to one of five high-intensity Achilles tendon (AT) loading protocols (i.e., 90% maximum voluntary contraction and approximately 4.5 to 6.5% tendon strain) that were systematically modified in terms of loading frequency (i.e., sessions per week) and overall loading volume (i.e., total time under loading). Before, at mid-term (8 weeks) and after completion of the 16 weeks intervention, AT mechanical properties were determined using a combination of inverse dynamics and ultrasonography. Abstract

The stability space of a module is the cone of vectors which make the module semistable. These cones are defined in terms of inequalities; in this paper we draw insights from considering the dual description in terms of non-negative linear spans. We show how stability spaces of thin modules are related to order polytopes. In the case of non-thin modules, we show how the stability spaces of string and band modules are related to the stability spaces of the thin modules corresponding to the abstract string and band. We use this to analyse the way in which the stability space of a band module is the limit of stability spaces of string modules. Abstract

In this paper we use recollements to investigate partially wrapped Fukaya categories of surfaces with marked points. In particular, we show that cutting surfaces gives rise to recollements of the corresponding partially wrapped Fukaya categories. Our approach is based on the fact that the partially wrapped Fukaya category of a surface with marked points is triangle equivalent to the perfect derived category of a homologically smooth and proper graded gentle algebra with zero differential as shown by Haiden, Katzarkov and Kontsevich. Using this, we study particular generators of partially wrapped Fukaya categories, namely full exceptional sequences, silting objects and simple-minded collections. In particular, we fully characterise the existence of full exceptional sequences and we give an example of a partially wrapped Fukaya category which does not admit a silting object, that is a generator with no positive self-extensions., Comment: 30 pages. Abstract

Introduction: Climate change's severe impact on human health is becoming increasingly evident, particularly for vulnerable populations with serious illnesses. Climate-related extreme weather events are expected to increase demand for hospice and palliative care due to rising respiratory illnesses, heat-related issues, waterborne diseases, and aggravated chronic conditions. Our scoping review aimed to investigate the existing literature on climate change's impact on hospice and palliative medicine (HPM). Methods: We conducted a comprehensive literature search across various databases (e.g., Medline, EMbase, Web of Science, and Cochrane) using predefined climate change and HPM terms, resulting in 382 records. Following predetermined inclusion and exclusion criteria, 44 articles were selected for full-text review, and 20 were included for final analysis. In light of the limited literature on climate change's impact on HPM, we also sought narratives from HPM practitioners from across the world on their experiences in a changing climate. Results: Six major themes emerged: 1) The impact of climate change on HPM in low-income countries; 2) Descriptive pieces on climate change, climate disasters, and HPM; 3) Morbidity and mortality after climate disasters in the seriously ill population; 4) Discussion of euthanasia during climate disasters; 5) Recommendations and frameworks for disaster response in the field of HPM; 6) Carbon footprint of hospices. Additionally, narratives from HPM practitioners highlighted the disruptive effects of climate disasters on seriously ill patients and their caregivers as disasters caused care interruptions, reduced access to crucial health infrastructure, exacerbations of illness, accelerated disease progression, and increased morbidity and mortality. Conclusion: Existing research on climate change's impact on HPM is primarily anecdotal and descriptive, with a focus on climate-related disasters. Narratives from HPM practitioners worldwide underscore the disproportionate impact of climate disasters on seriously ill patients. Further research is necessary to comprehensively understand climate's intricate effects on HPM and to assess adaptable, mitigative, and resilient solutions against its adverse impacts.

Abstract

In this paper, using the correspondence of gentle algebras and dissections of marked surfaces, we study full exceptional sequences in the perfect derived category $\mathsf{K^b(A)}$ of a gentle algebra $\mathsf{A}$. We show that full exceptional sequences in $\mathsf{K^b(A)}$ exist if and only if the associated marked surface has no punctures and has at least two marked points on the boundary. Furthermore, by using induction on cuts of surfaces, we characterise when an exceptional sequence can be completed to a full exceptional sequence. If the genus of the associated surface is zero then we show that the action of the braid group together with the grading shift on full exceptional sequences in $\mathsf{K^b(A)}$ is transitive. For the case of surfaces of higher genus, we reduce the problem of transitivity to the problem of the existence of certain sequences of pairs of exceptional objects. We study a category $\mathcal{C}_2$ of $\mathbb{Z}$-graded MCM modules over the $A_\infty$ curve singularity and demonstrate it has infinite type $A$ cluster combinatorics. In particular, we show that this Frobenius category (or a suitable subcategory) is stably equivalent to the infinite type $A$ cluster categories of Holm-Jorgensen, Fisher and Paquette-Yildirim. As a consequence, $\mathcal{C}_2$ has cluster tilting subcategories modelled by certain triangulations of the (completed) $\infty$-gon. Abstract

Background: COVID-19 is primarily known as a respiratory illness; however, many patients present to hospital without respiratory symptoms. The association between non-respiratory presentations of COVID-19 and outcomes remains unclear. We investigated risk factors and clinical outcomes in patients with no respiratory symptoms (NRS) and respiratory symptoms (RS) at hospital admission. Methods: This study describes clinical features, physiological parameters, and outcomes of hospitalised COVID-19 patients, stratified by the presence or absence of respiratory symptoms at hospital admission. RS patients had one or more of: cough, shortness of breath, sore throat, runny nose or wheezing; while NRS patients did not. Results: Of 178,640 patients in the study, 86.4 % presented with RS, while 13.6 % had NRS. NRS patients were older (median age: NRS: 74 vs RS: 65) and less likely to be admitted to the ICU (NRS: 36.7 % vs RS: 37.5 %). NRS patients had a higher crude in-hospital case-fatality ratio (NRS 41.1 % vs. RS 32.0 %), but a lower risk of death after adjusting for confounders (HR 0.88 [0.83–0.93]). Conclusion: Approximately one in seven COVID-19 patients presented at hospital admission without respiratory symptoms. These patients were older, had lower ICU admission rates, and had a lower risk of in-hospital mortality after adjusting for confounders.

Abstract

We investigate the role of gentle algebras in higher homological algebra. In the first part of the paper, we show that if the module category of a gentle algebra $\Lambda$ contains a $d$-cluster tilting subcategory for some $d \geq 2$, then $\Lambda$ is a radical square zero Nakayama algebra. This gives a complete classification of weakly $d$-representation finite gentle algebras. In the second part, we use a geometric model of the derived category to prove a similar result in the triangulated setup. More precisely, we show that if $\mathcal{D}^b(\Lambda)$ contains a $d$-cluster tilting subcategory that is closed under $[d]$, then $\Lambda$ is derived equivalent to an algebra of Dynkin type $A$. Abstract

Abstract Background High tendon strain leads to sub-rupture fatigue damage and net-catabolic signaling upon repetitive loading. While high levels of tendon strain occur in adolescent athletes at risk for tendinopathy, a direct association has not yet been established. Therefore, in this prospective longitudinal study, we examined the hypothesis that adolescent athletes who develop patellar tendon pain have shown increased levels of strain in advance. Methods In 44 adolescent athletes (12–17 years old), patellar tendon mechanical properties were measured using ultrasonography and inverse dynamics at four time points during a season. Fourteen athletes developed clinically relevant tendon pain (SYM; i.e., reduction of the VISA-P score of at least 13 points), while 23 remained asymptomatic (ASYM; VISA-P score of > 87 points). Seven cases did not fall into one of these categories and were excluded. Tendon mechanical properties of SYM in the session before the development of symptoms were compared to a randomly selected session in ASYM. Results Tendon strain was significantly higher in SYM compared to ASYM (p = 0.03). The risk ratio for developing symptoms was 2.3-fold higher in athletes with tendon strain ≥9% (p = 0.026). While there was no clear evidence for systematic differences of the force applied to the tendon or tendon stiffness between SYM and ASYM (p > 0.05), subgroup analysis indicated that tendon force increased prior to the development of symptoms only in SYM (p = 0.034). Discussio The study provides novel longitudinal evidence that high tendon strain could be an important risk factor for patellar tendinopathy in adolescent athletes. We suggest that inadequate adaptation of tendon stiffness to increases in muscle strength may occur if adolescent athletes are subject to mechanical loading which does not provide effective tendon stimulation.

Abstract

Building on the embedding of an $n$-abelian category $\mathscr{M}$ into an abelian category $\mathcal{A}$ as an $n$-cluster-tilting subcategory of $\mathcal{A}$, in this paper we relate the $n$-torsion classes of $\mathscr{M}$ with the torsion classes of $\mathcal{A}$. Indeed, we show that every $n$-torsion class in $\mathscr{M}$ is given by the intersection of a torsion class in $\mathcal{A}$ with $\mathscr{M}$. Moreover, we show that every chain of $n$-torsion classes in the $n$-abelian category $\mathscr{M}$ induces a Harder-Narasimhan filtration for every object of $\mathscr{M}$. We use the relation between $\mathscr{M}$ and $\mathcal{A}$ to show that every Harder-Narasimhan filtration induced by a chain of $n$-torsion classes in $\mathscr{M}$ can be induced by a chain of torsion classes in $\mathcal{A}$. Abstract

Hutchinson–Gilford Progeria Syndrome (HGPS) is an extremely rare genetic disorder that causes accelerated aging, due to a pathogenic variant in the LMNA gene. This pathogenic results in the production of progerin, a defective protein that disrupts the nuclear lamina’s structure. In our study, we conducted a histopathological analysis of various organs in the LmnaG609G/G609G mouse model, which is commonly used to study HGPS. The objective of this study was to show that progerin accumulation drives systemic but organ-specific tissue damage and accelerated aging phenotypes. Our findings show significant fibrosis, inflammation, and dysfunction in multiple organ systems, including the skin, cardiovascular system, muscles, lungs, liver, kidneys, spleen, thymus, and heart. Specifically, we observed severe vascular fibrosis, reduced muscle regeneration, lung tissue remodeling, depletion of fat in the liver, and disruptions in immune structures. These results underscore the systemic nature of the disease and suggest that chronic inflammation and fibrosis play crucial roles in the accelerated aging seen in HGPS. Additionally, our study highlights that each organ responds differently to the toxic effects of progerin, indicating that there are distinct mechanisms of tissue-specific damage.

35. A geometric realization of silting theory for gentle algebras

Abstract

A gentle algebra gives rise to a dissection of an oriented marked surface with boundary into polygons and the bounded derived category of the gentle algebra has a geometric interpretation in terms of this surface. In this paper we study silting theory in the bounded derived category of a gentle algebra in terms of its underlying surface. In particular, we show how silting mutation corresponds to the changing of graded arcs and that in some cases silting mutation results in the interpretation of the octahedral axioms in terms of the flipping of diagonals in a quadrilateral as in the work of Dyckerhoff-Kapranov in the context of triangulated surfaces. We also show that silting reduction corresponds to the cutting of the underlying surface as is the case for Calabi-Yau reduction of surface cluster categories as shown by Marsh-Palu and Qiu-Zhou.

Abstract

BackgroundDanish women-who were HPV-vaccinated as girls-are now reaching an age where they are invited to cervical cancer screening. Because of their expected lower cervical cancer risk, we must reassess our screening strategies. We analyzed Danish HPV-vaccinated women's outcomes after the first screening test at age 23.Methods and findingsOur study was embedded in Danish routine cytology-based screening. We conducted an observational study and included women born in 1994, offered the 4-valent HPV vaccine at age 14, and subsequently invited to screening at age 23. Cervical cytology was used for diagnostics and clinical management. Residual material was HPV tested with Cobas® 4800/6800. The most severe histology diagnosis within 795 days of screening was found through linkage with the Danish National Pathology Register. We calculated the number of women undergoing follow-up (repeated testing and/or colposcopy) per detected cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN2+). A total of 6021 women were screened; 92% were HPV-vaccinated; 12% had abnormal cytology; 35% were high-risk HPV-positive, including 0.9% HPV16/18 positive, and 20% had follow-up. In women that were cytology-abnormal and HPV-positive (Cyt+/HPV+), 610 (98.5%) had been followed up, and 138 CIN2+ cases were diagnosed, resulting in 4.4 (95% CI 3.9-5.2) women undergoing follow-up per detected CIN2+. In contrast to recommendations, 182 (12.2%) cytology-normal and HPV-positive (Cyt-/HPV+) women were followed up within 795 days, and 8 CIN2+ cases were found, resulting in 22.8 (95% CI 13.3-59.3) women undergoing follow-up per detected CIN2+.ConclusionOverall, HPV prevalence was high in HPV-vaccinated women, but HPV16/18 had largely disappeared. In the large group of cytology-normal and HPV-positive women, 23 had been followed up per detected CIN2+ case. Our data indicated that primary HPV screening of young HPV-vaccinated women would require very effective triage methods to avoid an excessive follow-up burden.Trial registrationTrial registration number: NCT0304955.

Abstract

Introduction The population-based Inter99 cohort has contributed extensively to our understanding of effects of a systematic screening and lifestyle intervention, as well as the multifactorial aetiology of type 2 diabetes (T2D) and cardiovascular disease. To understand causes, trajectories and patterns of early and overt cardiometabolic disease manifestations, we will perform a combined clinical deep phenotyping and registry follow-up study of the now 50–80 years old Inter99 participants.Methods and analysis The Inter99 cohort comprises individuals aged 30–60 years, who lived in a representative geographical area of greater Copenhagen, Denmark, in 1999. Age-stratified and sex-stratified random subgroups were invited to participate in either a lifestyle intervention (N=13 016) or questionnaires (N=5264), while the rest served as a reference population (N=43 021). Of the 13 016 individuals assigned to the lifestyle intervention group, 6784 (52%) accepted participation in a baseline health examination in 1999, including screening for cardiovascular risk factors and prediabetic conditions. In total, 6004 eligible participants, who participated in the baseline examination, will be invited to participate in the deep phenotyping 20-year follow-up clinical examination including measurements of anthropometry, blood pressure, arterial stiffness, cardiometabolic biomarkers, coronary artery calcification, heart rate variability, heart rhythm, liver stiffness, fundus characteristics, muscle strength and mass, as well as health and lifestyle questionnaires. In a subsample, 10-day monitoring of diet, physical activity and continuous glucose measurements will be performed. Fasting blood, urine and faecal samples to be stored in a biobank. The established database will form the basis of multiple analyses. A main purpose is to investigate whether low birth weight independent of genetics, lifestyle and glucose tolerance predicts later common T2D cardiometabolic comorbidities.Ethics and dissemination The study was approved by the Medical Ethics Committee, Capital Region, Denmark (H-20076231) and by the Danish Data Protection Agency through the Capital Region of Denmark’s registration system (P-2020-1074). Informed consent will be obtained before examinations. Findings will be disseminated in peer-reviewed journals, at conferences and via presentations to stakeholders, including patients and public health policymakers.Trial registration number NCT05166447.

Abstract

We construct Grassmannian categories of infinite rank, providing an infinite analogue of the Grassmannian cluster categories introduced by Jensen, King, and Su. Each Grassmannian category of infinite rank is given as the category of graded maximal Cohen-Macaulay modules over a certain hypersurface singularity. We show that generically free modules of rank $1$ in a Grassmannian category of infinite rank are in bijection with the Pl\"ucker coordinates in an appropriate Grassmannian cluster algebra of infinite rank. Moreover, this bijection is structure preserving, as it relates rigidity in the category to compatibility of Pl\"ucker coordinates. Along the way, we develop a combinatorial formula to compute the dimension of the $\mathrm{Ext}^1$-spaces between any two generically free modules of rank $1$ in the Grassmannian category of infinite rank., Comment: V2: revision, title change. Abstract

Skew-gentle algebras are a generalisation of the well-known class of gentle algebras with which they share many common properties. In this work, using non-commutative Gr\"obner basis theory, we show that these algebras are Koszul and that the Koszul dual is again skew-gentle. We give a geometric model of their bounded derived categories in terms of polygonal dissections of orbifold surfaces establishing a correspondence between curves in the orbifold and indecomposable objects. Moreover, we show that the orbifold dissections encode homological properties of skew-gentle algebras such as their singularity categories, their Gorenstein dimensions and derived invariants such as the determinant of their q-Cartan matrices., Comment: Version3: Minor corrections of typos and add references

Abstract

Subglacial meltwater of land-terminating glaciers in Greenland and Iceland are sources of methane (CH4) to the atmosphere, but sparse empirical data exist about the spatial distribution of subglacial CH4 production and emission from glaciers in other regions of the world. This study presents the first measurements of CH4 emissions from the subglacial meltwater of three outlet glaciers of the St. Elias Mountains in Yukon, Canada. Dissolved CH4 concentrations were highly elevated at 45, 135, and 250 times compared to the atmospheric equilibrium concentration in the meltwater of Dusty, Kluane, and Donjek glaciers, respectively. Dissolved CO2 concentrations were depleted relative to the atmospheric equilibrium. This points to the meltwater being a source of CH4 and a sink of CO2. Stable carbon (13C) and hydrogen (2H) isotopic signatures of the subglacial CH4 were depleted compared to atmospheric CH4 at all sites, indicating both biotic and abiotic sources and possible alteration from bacterial CH4 oxidation in the meltwater. No relation was found between CH4 concentrations in the meltwater and the meltwater chemistry or the size of the glaciers in this study. These findings suggest that CH4 emissions from subglacial environments under alpine glaciers may be a more common phenomenon than previously thought.

46. Quantification of patellar tendon strain and opportunities for personalized tendon loading during back squats

Abstract

Abstract Tendon strain during exercise is a critical regulatory factor in tendon adaptive responses and there are indications for an optimal range of strain that promotes tendon adaptation. Back squats are used to improve patellar tendon properties in sport and clinical settings. To date, the operating patellar tendon strain during back squats is unknown and current recommendations for individual exercise loading are based on the one repetition maximum (1RM). Here, we quantified patellar tendon strain during loaded back squats at 40, 60 and 80% of the 1RM and during maximum isometric knee extension contractions (MVC) using ultrasonography. Kinematics, ground reaction forces and muscle electromyographic activity were also recorded. Additionally, maximum tendon strain during the MVC and the percentage of 1RM were used as explanatory variables to estimate the individual patellar tendon strain during the squats. Strain increased with increasing 1RM loading (4.7 to 8.2%), indicating that already medium-loading back squats may provide a sufficient stimulus for tendon adaptation. The individual variability was, however, too high to generalize these findings. Yet, there was a high agreement between the individually estimated and measured patellar tendon strain (R2 = 0.858) during back squats. We argue that this approach may provide new opportunities for personalized tendon exercise.

Abstract

Abstract Background The efficiency of downstream processes plays a crucial role in the transition from conventional petrochemical processes to sustainable biotechnological production routes. One promising candidate for product separation from fermentations with low energy demand and high selectivity is the adsorption of the target product on hydrophobic adsorbents. However, only limited knowledge exists about the interaction of these adsorbents and the bioprocess. The bioprocess could possibly be harmed by the release of inhibitory components from the adsorbent surface. Another possibility is co-adsorption of essential nutrients, especially in an in situ application, making these nutrients unavailable to the applied microorganism. Results A test protocol investigating adsorbent-bioprocess compatibility was designed and applied on a variety of adsorbents. Inhibitor release and nutrient adsorption was studied in an isolated manner. Respiratory data recorded by a RAMOS device was used to assess the influence of the adsorbents on the cultivation in three different microbial systems for up to six different adsorbents per system. While no inhibitor release was detected in our investigations, adsorption of different essential nutrients was observed. Conclusion The application of adsorption for product recovery from the bioprocess was proven to be generally possible, but nutrient adsorption has to be assessed for each application individually. To account for nutrient adsorption, adsorptive product separation should only be applied after sufficient microbial growth. Moreover, concentrations of co-adsorbed nutrients need to be increased to compensate nutrient loss. The presented protocol enables an investigation of adsorbent-bioprocess compatibility with high-throughput and limited effort.

50. Renal trauma during a rugby tackle

Abstract

Rugby-related renal trauma is rare and identification of a young patient with renal trauma secondary to sports who requires observation versus further radiological evaluation in the emergency department (ED) poses a diagnostic challenge. We report a case of a 16-year-old girl who presented to the ED with abdominal pain after being tackled during a game of rugby. Examination revealed tenderness over the right lateral lower ribs and right flank. Blood tests were normal and bedside ultrasound did not show any free intraperitoneal fluid. Urinalysis showed gross hematuria. She was pain-free after analgesia but had a syncopal episode in the ED. A computed tomography (CT) scan of the abdomen and pelvis showed a complex right lower pole renal laceration and she was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit. She remained stable and was discharged. Assessment with urinalysis, hematocrit, and creatinine is required during the evaluation of a patient with suspected renal trauma. CT scan is the imaging modality for the diagnosis and grading of renal injury. Conservative treatment is the mainstay of therapy, but some patients require angioembolization of surgical intervention. Patients must discuss with their physician regarding the optimal timing of return to rugby. Rugby-related renal trauma is rare and poses a challenge for emergency physicians regarding their evaluation and management in the ED. AAST-OIS grading of renal trauma on CT imaging helps guide appropriate management decisions.
