Two XUV-photon double ionization of Ne, induced by an intense few-pulse attosecond train with a ~ 4 fs envelope duration is investigated experimentally and theoretically. The experiment is performed at ELI-ALPS utilizing the recently constructed 10 Hz gas phase high-order harmonic generation SYLOS GHHG-COMPACT beamline. A total pulse energy up to ~1 {\mu}J generated in Argon in conjunction with high reflectivity optics in the XUV region, allowed the observation of the doubly charged state of Ne induced by 40 eV central XUV photon energies. The interaction of the intense attosecond pulse train with Ne is also theoretically studied via a second-order time dependent perturbation theory equations-of-motion. The results of this work, combined with the feasibility of conducting XUV-pump-XUV-probe experiments, constitute a powerful tool for many potential applications. Those include attosecond pulse metrology as well as time resolved investigations of the dynamics underlying direct and sequential double ionization and their electron correlation effects.

Physics - Atomic Physics - Abstract
The development of ultra-short intense laser sources in the visible and extreme ultraviolet (XUV) spectral range led to fascinating studies in laser-matter interactions and attosecond science. In the majority of these studies the system under investigation interacts with a focused laser beam, which ionizes the system. The ionization products are usually measured by devices, which spatiotemporally integrate the ionization signal originating from the entire focal area, discarding in this way valuable information about the ionization dynamics that take place in the interaction volume. Here, we review a recently developed approach in measuring the spatially resolved photoionization yields resulting from the interaction of infrared (IR)/XUV ultra-short laser pulses in gas phase media. We show how this approach enables a) the in-situ focus diagnostic, b) quantitative studies of linear and non-linear ionization processes in the IR/XUV regime, c) single-shot XUV-pump-XUV-probe studies and d) single-shot 2nd-order XUV autocorrelation measurements. The article has been published in J. Opt. 20, 024018 (2018) (doi.org/10.1088/2040-8986/aaa326)., Comment: 32 pages, 13 figures

This work is on the Physics of the B Factories. Part A of this book contains a brief description of the SLAC and KEK B Factories as well as their detectors, BaBar and Belle, and data taking related issues. Part B discusses tools and methods used by the experiments in order to obtain results. The results themselves can be found in Part C. Please note that version 3 on the archive is the auxiliary version of the Physics of the B Factories book. This uses the notation alpha, beta, gamma for the angles of the Unitarity Triangle. The nominal version uses the notation phi_1, phi_2 and phi_3. Please cite this work as Eur. Phys. J. C74 (2014) 3026., Comment: 928 pages, version 3 (arXiv:1406.6311v3) corresponds to the alpha, beta, gamma version of the book, the other versions use the phi1, phi2, phi3 notation

Physics - Atomic Physics - Abstract
The tunnelling of an electron through a suppressed atomic potential followed by its motion in the continuum, is the fundamental mechanism underlying strong-field laser-atom/molecule interactions. Due to its quantum nature, the interaction is governed by the phase of the released electron wave-packets. Thus, detailed mapping of the electron wave-packet interferences provides essential insight into the physics underlying the interaction. A process which is providing access to the intricacies of the interaction is the generation of high order harmonics of the laser frequency. The phase-amplitude distribution of the emitted extreme-ultraviolet (EUV), carries the complete information about the harmonic generation process and vice-versa. Thus, the visualization of the EUV-spatial-amplitude-distribution, as it results from interfering electron wave-packet contributions, is of crucial importance. Restrictions to this accomplishment are due to the spatially integrating measurement approaches applied so far, that average out the phase effects in the generation process. In this work, we demonstrate a method which overcomes this obstacle. An EUV-spatial-amplitude-distribution-image is induced from the imprint on the measured spatial distribution of ions, produced through EUV-photon ionization of atoms. Interference extremes in the image carry phase information about the interfering electron wave-packets. The present approach provides detailed insight on the strong-field laser-atom interaction mechanism, while establishing the era of phase selective interaction studies. Furthermore, it paves the way for substantial enhancement of the spectral and temporal precision of measurements by in-situ controlling the phase distribution of the emitted radiation and/or spatially selecting the EUV-radiation-atom interaction products., Comment: 13 pages main text with 4 figures, 7 pages supporting material with 3 figures

High Energy Physics - Experiment - Abstract
We study the decay $\bar{B}^{0}\rightarrow\Lambda_{c}^{+}\bar{p}\pi^{+}\pi^{-}$, reconstructing the \Lambda_{c}^{+} baryon in the $p K^{-}\pi^{+}$ mode, using a data sample of $467\times 10^{6}$ $B\bar{B}$ pairs collected with the BaBar detector at the PEP-2 storage rings at SLAC. We measure branching fractions for decays with intermediate $\Sigma_{c}$ baryons to be ${\cal B}[\bar{B}^{0}\rightarrow\Sigma_{c}(2455)^{++}\bar{p}\pi^{-}]=(21.3 \pm 1.0 \pm 1.0 \pm 5.5) \times 10^{-5}$, ${\cal B}[\bar{B}^{0}\rightarrow\Sigma_{c}(2520)^{++}\bar{p}\pi^{-}]=(11.5\pm 1.0 \pm 0.5 \pm 3.0)\times 10^{-5}$, ${\cal B}[\bar{B}^{0}\rightarrow\Sigma_{c}(2455)^{0}\bar{p}\pi^{+}]=(9.1 \pm 0.7 \pm 0.4 \pm 2.4)\times10^{-5}$, and ${\cal B}[\bar{B}^{0}\rightarrow\Sigma_{c}(2520)^{0}\bar{p}\pi^{+}]= (2.2 \pm 0.7 \pm 0.1\pm 0.6) \times 10^{-5}$, where the uncertainties are statistical, systematic, and due to the uncertainty on the $\Lambda_{c}^{+}\rightarrow\proton\Km\pi^{+}$ branching fraction, respectively. For decays without $\Sigma_{c}(2455)$ or $\Sigma_{c}(2520)$ resonances, we measure ${\cal B}[\bar{B}^{0}\rightarrow\Lambda_{c}^{+}\bar{p}\pi^{+}\pi^{-}]_{\mathrm{non-\Sigma_{c}}}=(79 \pm 4 \pm 4 \pm 20)\times10^{-5}$. The total branching fraction is determined to be ${\cal B}[\bar{B}^{0}\rightarrow\Lambda_{c}^{+}\bar{p}\pi^{+}\pi^{-}]_{\mathrm{total}}=(123 \pm 5 \pm 7 \pm 32)\times10^{-5}$. We examine multibody mass combinations in the resonant three-particle $\Sigma_{c}\bar{p}\pi$ final states and in the four-particle $\Lambda_{c}^{+}\bar{p}\pi^{+}\pi^{-}$ final state, and observe different characteristics for the $\bar{p}\pi$ combination in neutral versus doubly-charged $\Sigma_{c}$ decays., Comment: 20 pages, 30 figures

High Energy Physics - Experiment - Abstract
We study the process e+e- -> pi+pi-pi+pi-gamma, with a photon emitted from the initial-state electron or positron, using 454.3 fb^-1 of data collected with the BABAR detector at SLAC, corresponding to approximately 260,000 signal events. We use these data to extract the non-radiative sigma(e+e- ->pi+pi-pi+pi-) cross section in the energy range from 0.6 to 4.5 Gev. The total uncertainty of the cross section measurement in the peak region is less than 3%, higher in precision than the corresponding results obtained from energy scan data.

High Energy Physics - Experiment - Abstract
We report a measurement of the inclusive semileptonic branching fraction of the B_s meson using data collected with the BaBar detector in the center-of-mass (CM) energy region above the Upsilon(4S) resonance. We use the inclusive yield of phi mesons and the phi yield in association with a high-momentum lepton to perform a simultaneous measurement of the semileptonic branching fraction and the production rate of B_s mesons relative to all B mesons as a function of CM energy. The inclusive semileptonic branching fraction of the B_s meson is determined to be B(B_s to l nu X)=9.5 (+2.5/-2.0)(stat)(+1.1/-1.9)(syst)%, where l indicates the average of e and mu., Comment: 8 pages, 7 eps figures

We present experimental results for the ionization of aniline and benzene molecules subjected to intense ultrashort laser pulses. Measured parent molecular ions yields were obtained using a recently developed technique capable of three-dimensional imaging of ion distributions within the focus of a laser beam. By selecting ions originating from the central region of the focus, where the spatial intensity distribution is nearly uniform, volumetric-free intensity-dependent ionization yields were obtained. The measured data revealed a previously unseen resonant-like multiphoton ionization process. Comparison of benzene, aniline and Xe ion yields demonstrate that the observed intensity dependent structures are not due to geometric artifacts in the focus. Finally we attribute the ionization of aniline to a stepwise process going through the pi-sigma^star state which sits 3 photons above the ground state and 2 photons below the continuum., Comment: 18 pages, 1 equation and 3 figures

High Energy Physics - Experiment - Abstract
We search for hadronic decays of a light Higgs boson (A0) produced in radiative decays of an Upsilon(2S) or Upsilon(3S) meson, Upsilon --> gamma A0. The data have been recorded by the BABAR experiment at the Upsilon(3S) and Upsilon(2S) center of mass energies, and include (121.3 \pm 1.2) x 10^6 Upsilon(3S) and (98.3 \pm 0.9) x 10^6 Upsilon(2S) mesons. No significant signal is observed. We set 90% confidence level upper limits on the product branching fractions B(Upsilon(nS)-->gamma A0) x B(A0-->hadrons) (n=2 or 3) that range from 1 x 10^{-6} for an A0 mass of 0.3 GeV/c^2 to 8 x 10^{-5} at 7 GeV/c^2., Comment: 7 pages, 5 postscript figures, submitted to Physical Review Letters

High Energy Physics - Experiment - Abstract
We report the observation of the baryonic B decay B0bar --> Lambda_c^+ anti-Lambda K- with a significance larger than 7 standard deviations based on 471x10^6$ BBbar pairs collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II storage ring at SLAC. We measure the branching fraction for the decay B0bar --> Lambda_c^+ anti-Lambda K- to be (3.8 \pm 0.8_{stat} \pm 0.2_{sys} \pm 1.0_{Lambda_c^+})x10^{-5}. The uncertainties are statistical, systematic, and due to the uncertainty in the Lambda_c^+ branching fraction. We find that the Lambda_c^+ K^- invariant mass distribution shows an enhancement above 3.5 GeV/c^2., Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev. D (Rapid Communications)

High Energy Physics - Experiment - Abstract
Using a sample of 122 million Upsilon(3S) events recorded with the BaBar detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy e+e- collider at SLAC, we search for the $h_b(1P)$ spin-singlet partner of the P-wave chi_{bJ}(1P) states in the sequential decay Upsilon(3S) --> pi0 h_b(1P), h_b(1P) --> gamma eta_b(1S). We observe an excess of events above background in the distribution of the recoil mass against the pi0 at mass 9902 +/- 4(stat.) +/- 2(syst.) MeV/c^2. The width of the observed signal is consistent with experimental resolution, and its significance is 3.1sigma, including systematic uncertainties. We obtain the value (4.3 +/- 1.1(stat.) +/- 0.9(syst.)) x 10^{-4} for the product branching fraction BF(Upsilon(3S)-->pi0 h_b) x BF(h_b-->gamma eta_b)., Comment: 8 pages, 4 postscript figures, submitted to Phys. High Energy Physics - Experiment - Abstract
The OPERA detector at the Gran Sasso underground laboratory (LNGS) was used to measure the atmospheric muon charge ratio in the TeV energy region. We analyzed 403069 atmospheric muons corresponding to 113.4 days of livetime during the 2008 CNGS run. We computed separately the muon charge ratio for single and for multiple muon events in order to select different energy regions of the primary cosmic ray spectrum and to test the charge ratio dependence on the primary composition. The measured charge ratio values were corrected taking into account the charge-misidentification errors. Data have also been grouped in five bins of the "vertical surface energy". A fit to a simplified model of muon production in the atmosphere allowed the determination of the pion and kaon charge ratios weighted by the cosmic ray energy spectrum., Comment: 14 pages, 10 figures

High Energy Physics - Phenomenology - Abstract
If no light Higgs boson exist, the interaction among the gauge bosons becomes strong at high energies (~1TeV). The effects of strong electroweak symmetry breaking (SEWSB) could manifest themselves as anomalous couplings before they give rise to new physical states, thus measurement of all couplings and their possible deviation from Standard Model (SM) values could give valuable information for understanding the true nature of symmetry breaking sector. Here we present a detailed study of the measurement of quartic gauge couplings in weak boson scattering processes and a possibility for same measurement in triple weak boson production. Expected limits on the parameters alpha_4 alpha_5,alpha_6, alpha_7 and alpha_10 in electroweak chiral Lagrangian are given., Comment: talk presented at LCWS05, Stanford, USA, March 2005

High Energy Physics - Phenomenology - Abstract
We review some selected topics in the decays of heavy flavours, beauty and charm, which are of principal interest at HERA-B and HERA. The topics in $B$ physics include: an update on the quark mixing matrix and CP violating phases, issues bearing on an improved resolution on the CP-violating phase $\Delta (sin 2 \beta)$, prospects of measuring radiative and semileptonic rare $B$ decays, the $B_s^{0}$ - $\overline{B_s^{0}}$ mixing ratio $x_s$, improved measurements of the $B_d^{0}$ - $\overline{B_d^{0}}$ mixing ratio $x_d$ and the $B$-hadron lifetimes, in particular $\tau(\Lambda_b)$. In the charm sector, we have focussed on rare decays and $D^0$- $\overline{D^0}$ mixing, whose measurements will signal physics beyond the standard model., Comment: Latex2e, 19 pages, 4 figures (require epsf.sty, rotate). - Abstract
Interactions between plants and herbivores are central in most ecosystems, but their strength is highly variable. The amount of variability within a system is thought to influence most aspects of plant-herbivore biology, from ecological stability to plant defense evolution. Our understanding of what influences variability, however, is limited by sparse data. We collected standardized surveys of herbivory for 503 plant species at 790 sites across 116° of latitude. With these data, we show that within-population variability in herbivory increases with latitude, decreases with plant size, and is phylogenetically structured. Differences in the magnitude of variability are thus central to how plant-herbivore biology varies across macroscale gradients. We argue that increased focus on interaction variability will advance understanding of patterns of life on Earth.

- Abstract
SummaryHuman populations have been shaped by catastrophes that may have left long-lasting signatures in their genomes. One notable example is the second plague pandemic that entered Europe in ca. 1,347 CE and repeatedly returned for over 300 years, with typical village and town mortality estimated at 10%–40%.1 It is assumed that this high mortality affected the gene pools of these populations. First, local population crashes reduced genetic diversity. Second, a change in frequency is expected for sequence variants that may have affected survival or susceptibility to the etiologic agent (Yersinia pestis).2 Third, mass mortality might alter the local gene pools through its impact on subsequent migration patterns. We explored these factors using the Norwegian city of Trondheim as a model, by sequencing 54 genomes spanning three time periods: (1) prior to the plague striking Trondheim in 1,349 CE, (2) the 17th–19th century, and (3) the present. We find that the pandemic period shaped the gene pool by reducing long distance immigration, in particular from the British Isles, and inducing a bottleneck that reduced genetic diversity. Although we also observe an excess of large FST values at multiple loci in the genome, these are shaped by reference biases introduced by mapping our relatively low genome coverage degraded DNA to the reference genome. This implies that attempts to detect selection using ancient DNA (aDNA) datasets that vary by read length and depth of sequencing coverage may be particularly challenging until methods have been developed to account for the impact of differential reference bias on test statistics.
