Search

For every ordered set, we reconstruct the deck obtained by removal of the elements of rank r that are neither minimal nor maximal. Consequently, we also reconstruct the deck obtained by removal of the extremal, that is, minimal or maximal, elements. Finally, we reconstruct the ordered sets with a minmax pair of pseudo-similar points.

This paper exploits adjacencies between the orbits of an ordered set P and a consequence of the classification of finite simple groups to, in many cases, exponentially bound the number of automorphisms. Results clearly identify the structures which currently prevent the proof of such an exponential bound, or which indeed inflate the number of automorphisms beyond such a bound. This is a first step towards a possible resolution of the Automorphism Conjecture for ordered sets.

We introduce a recursive method to deconstruct the automorphism group of an ordered set. By connecting this method with deep results for permutation groups, we prove the Automorphism Conjecture for ordered sets of width less than or equal to $11$. We prove that there are arbitrarily large indecomposable ordered sets T with a 2-chain C such that the smallest indecomposable proper superset U of C in T is T itself. Subsequently, we characterize all such indecomposable ordered sets T and 2-chains C. We also prove the same type of result for 2-antichains., Comment: 12 pages, 3 figures

Using the large acceptance Time Projection Chamber of experiment E895 at Brookhaven, measurements of collective sideward flow in Au + Au collisions at beam energies of 2, 4, 6 and 8A GeV are presented in the form of in-plane transverse momentum and the first Fourier coefficient of azimuthal anisotropy v_1. These measurements indicate a smooth variation of sideward flow as a function of beam energy. The data are compared with four nuclear transport models which have an orientation towards this energy range. All four exhibit some qualitative trends similar to those found in the data, although none shows a consistent pattern of agreement within experimental uncertainties., Comment: Accepted for publication by PRL. We present the results of an experimental search for stable strange matter using the heavy ion activation technique. We studied samples of a meteorite, terrestrial nickel ore, and lunar soil. Our search improved the existing experimental limit on the strange matter content in normal matter by 2 to 3 orders of magnitude, and allowed us to probe for the first time the flux of low mass strangelets on the lunar surface., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

Measurements of dielectron production in p+p and p+d collisions with beam kinetic energies from 1.04 to 4.88 GeV are presented. The differential cross section is presented as a function of invariant pair mass, transverse momentum, and rapidity. The shapes of the mass spectra and their evolution with beam energy provide information about the relative importance of the various dielectron production mechanisms in this energy regime. The p+d to p+p ratio of the dielectron yield is also presented as a function of invariant pair mass, transverse momentum, and rapidity. The shapes of the transverse momentum and rapidity spectra from the p+d and p+p systems are found to be similar to one another for each of the beam energies studied. We present measured dielectron production cross sections for Ca+Ca, C+C, He+Ca, and d+Ca reactions at 1.0 A GeV. Statistical uncertainties and systematic effects are smaller than in previous DLS nucleus-nucleus data. For pair mass < 0.35 GeV/c2 : 1) the Ca+Ca cross section is larger than the previous DLS measurement and current model results, 2) the mass spectra suggest large contributions from pi0 and eta Dalitz decays, and 3) dsigma/dM is proportional to ApAt. For M > 0.5 GeV/c2 the Ca+Ca to C+C cross section ratio is significantly larger than the ratio of ApAt values., Comment: Submitted to Physical Review Letters. The DLS collaboration has recently completed a high statistics study of dilepton production at the Bevalac. In particular, we have measured dielectrons (e+e-) from p-p and p-d collisions to understand the basic dilepton production mechanisms in the energy range from 1.05 - 4.9 GeV. These data can be used to determine the basic processes which contribute to nucleon-nucleon dilepton production such as hadronic bremsstrahlung, vector meson processes, and hadronic Dalitz decay. The data show that a simple elastic bremsstrahlung calculation is insufficient to explain the data. Theoretical models are compared with the data.
