Abstract

The number of sensors deployed in the world is expected to explode in the near future. At this moment, nearly 30 billion Internet of Things (IoT) devices are connected and this number is expected to double in the next four years. While not all of these are battery powered, as technology becomes smaller and mobility becomes more important to consumers, soon a larger portion will be. This forecast predicts that the number of machine to machine (M2M) devices will have the largest increase, representing nearly 50% of all devices in 2023.

Abstract

Far-field wireless power transfer, based on radio frequency (RF) waves, came into the picture to fulfill the power need of large Internet of Things (IoT) networks, the backbone of the 5G and beyond era. However, RF communication signals carry both information as well as energy. Therefore, recently, simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) has attracted much attention in order to wirelessly charge these IoT devices. In this paper, we propose a novel N -tone multitone phase shift keying (PSK) modulation scheme, taking advantage of the non-linearity of integrated receiver rectifier architecture. The main advantage of the proposed modulation scheme is the reduction in ripple voltage, introduced by the symbol transmission through phases. Achievable power conversion efficiency (PCE) and bit error rate (BER) at the output are considered to measure the efficacy of the proposed modulation scheme. Simulation results are verified by the measurements over the designed rectifier circuitry. The effect of symbol phase range, modulation order, and the number of tones are analyzed. In the future, this transmission scheme can be utilized to satisfy the data and power requirements of low-power Internet of Things sensor networks.

3. Highly Sensitive Differential Microwave Sensor for Soil Moisture Measurement

Abstract

This paper presents a highly sensitive differential soil moisture sensor (DSMS) using a microstrip line loaded with triangular two turn resonator(T2 SR) and complementary of the rectangular two turn spiral resonator(CR2 SR),simultaneously.Volumetric Water Content (VWC) or permittivity sensing is conducted by loading the T2 SR side with dielectric samples.Two transmission notches are observed for identical loads relating to T2 SR and CR2 SR.The CR2 SR notch at 4.39 GHz is used as a reference for differential permittivity measurement method.Further, the resonance frequency of T2 SR is measured relative to the reference value. Based on this frequency difference,the permittivity of soil is calculated which is related to the soil VWC.Triangular two turn resonator (T2 SR) resonance frequency changes from 4 to 2.38 GHz when VWC varies 0 percent to 30 percent.The sensor's operation principle is described through circuit model analysis and simulations.To validate the differential sensing concept, prototype of the designed 3 cell DSMS is fabricated and measured.The proposed sensor exhibits frequency shift of 110 MHz for 1 percent change at the highest soil moisture content (30 percent) for sandy type soil.This work proves the differential microwave sensing concept for precision agriculture.

9. Highly Compact Time-Domain Borehole Radar With Time-Varying Gain Equivalent Sampling

Abstract

In this article, a compact time-domain (TD) microwave system for borehole radar (BHR) is developed based on cost-effective microwave hardware. The time-varying gain equivalent sampling (TVGES) technique is proposed in the receiver, which consequently achieves an equivalent sampling rate of up to 33.3 GSa/s and a bandwidth of 618 MHz, enabling undistorted sampling of ultrawideband (UWB) pulse signals. Additionally, other components including pulse generator, antennas, and control circuits are purposely designed, and finally the complete system is integrated into a 120-cm-long polyvinyl chloride (PVC) pipe with a small diameter of 5.2 cm. The prototype can be operated with a portable android device (PAD) using a customized Ethernet cable, through Wi-Fi, or just working offline. Due to the proposed TVGES technique, the system is able to suppress disturbing early-arriving waveforms while effectively enhancing the reflections from targets. The performance of the developed system is evaluated for various measurement scenarios, especially by comparing with a measurement setup without TVGES. It shows that the TVGES-based system has a dynamic range of 61 dB and a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of up to 40 dB, and it can improve the SNR of late-arriving reflections by about 13 dB. To verify the proposed TD microwave BHR system, preliminary experiments are conducted, which show that the system can successfully detect a small target that is placed 0.4 m away from the BHR.

Abstract

This paper proposes a new approach for wide angle monitoring of vital signs in smart home applications. The person is tracked using an indoor radar. Upon detecting the person to be static, the radar automatically focuses its beam on that location, and subsequently breathing and heart rates are extracted from the reflected signals using continuous wavelet transform ( C W T ) analysis. In this way, leveraging the radar's on-chip processor enables real-time monitoring of vital signs across varying angles. In our experiment, we employ a commercial multi-input multi-output (MIMO) millimeter-wave FMCW radar to monitor vital signs within a range of 1.15 to 2.3 m and an angular span of − 44.8 to + 44.8 deg. In the Bland–Altman plot, the measured results indicate the average difference of − 1.5 and 0.06 beats per minute (BPM) relative to the reference for heart rate and breathing rate, respectively. Abstract

We explore the potential of passive radars based on Wi-Fi signals for crowd monitoring in mass gatherings and pedestrian mobility. Crowd monitoring aims at avoiding excessive people density to prevent accidents, and at analysing people's mobility patterns. It requires privacy-friendly people counting and trajectory estimation techniques, for which radars are especially well-suited. In particular, passive radars based on the ubiquitous Wi-Fi signals reuse channel estimation fields for sensing purposes. We address the problem of static clutter removal and detect slowly moving targets in highly cluttered environments. We show that simple novel methods such as Average Removal are efficient alternatives to the computationally intensive Extended Cancellation Algorithm. We propose a multi-antenna experimental setup based on software-defined radios, and relying on channel estimation signals from the latest Wi-Fi standard, namely 802.11ax, with 80 MHz of bandwidth. We design and experimentally validate a solution for the calibration of hardware-induced phase shifts between signals at different antennas using an anchor. We apply Angle-of-Arrival estimation for multiple people on detected cells in measured range-Doppler maps. This enables the implementation of a multi-people tracking scheme based on a Joint Probabilistic Data Association Filter combined with an Unscented Kalman Filter. This scheme is tuned according to the heavy constraints imposed by the Wi-Fi-based passive radar, and validated experimentally indoors, proving the feasibility of full range-Doppler-angle passive radars for people trajectory tracking with 802.11ax signals. We extend the analysis towards large-scale crowds, first by proposing a novel full-wave crowd simulator, through the resolution of an electric field integral equation applied to human bodies in two dimensions using the Method of Moments (MoM). Abstract

This paper presents a holistic and authoritative review of the role of microwave technologies in enabling a new generation of wearable devices. A human-centric Internet of Things (IoT) covering remote healthcare, distributed sensing, and consumer electronics, calls for high-performance wearable devices integrated into clothing, which require interdisciplinary research efforts to emerge. Microwaves, the “interconnect” of wireless networks, can enable, rather than solely connect, the next generation of autonomous, sustainable, and wearable-friendly electronics. First, enabling technologies including wireless power transmission and RF energy harvesting, backscattering and passive communication, RFID, and electromagnetic sensing are reviewed. We then discuss the key integration platforms, covering smart fabrics and electronic textiles, additive manufacturing, printed electronics, natively-flexible and organic RF semiconductors, and fully-integrated CMOS systems, where opportunities for hybrid integration are highlighted. The emerging research trends, from mmWave 6G, RF sensing and imaging, to healthcare applications including neural implants, drug delivery, and safety upon exposure to microwaves are revisited and discussed, presenting a future roadmap for interdisciplinary research towards sustainable and reliable next-generation wearables.

Abstract

This paper describes and discusses the implementation of a project-based graduate design course in telecommunications engineering. This course, which requires a combination of technical and soft skills for its completion, enables guided independent learning (GIL) and application of technical knowledge acquired from classroom learning. Its main implementation challenge is the need for instructors to define graduate-level GIL activities that are unique for the project objectives and scope. This process is required at both the system and subsystem levels. These activities must also satisfy the program learning outcomes and course outcomes (PLOs and COs). The course initiation, implementation, and management are first described from the instructor's perspective. Technical specifications and outcomes from a recently implemented project titled "A Human-Inspired Telecommunication System" is taken as a case study. Besides explaining the methodology used to evaluate both the course and the students, an empirical assessment of PLOs and COs against the associated educational activities is also presented. Results of a student exit survey, in which each instrument was mapped to specific COs, indicated that the intended course objectives had been accomplished and that there was a good level of student satisfaction.
