Abstract

This paper investigates, using a simulation program, a retrial queuing system with a single server which is subject to random breakdowns. The number of sources of calls is finite, and collisions can take place. We assume that the failure of the server blocks the system's operation such that newly arriving customers cannot enter the system, contrary to an earlier paper where the failure does not affect the arrivals. All the random variables included in the model construction are assumed to be independent of each other, and all times are exponentially distributed except for the service time, which is gamma distributed. The novelty of this analysis is the inspection of the blocking effect on the performance measures using different distributions. Various figures represent the impact of the squared coefficient of the variation of the service time on the main performance measures such as the mean and variance of the number of customers in the system, the mean and variance of the response time, the mean and variance of the time a customer spends in the service, and the mean and variance of the sojourn time in the orbit., 1. Abstract

Nonlinear dynamics and pattern formation in the systems with quadratic nonlinearity is computed symbolically by specially developed MATHEMATICA package. A Web interface for the presented methods is developed, which turns the implementations from only locally available software to Web-based services that can be accessed from any computer in the Internet that is equipped with a Web browser. In particular, the results are not bound to the current Mathematica implementation but can be adapted to any other computer algebra system (e.g. Maple) or numerical software system (e.g.MATLAB) of similar expressiveness. Abstract

We have investigated the magnetic and chemical properties of very thin Cr films, CrAs, and arsenized Cr grown by molecular beam epitaxy on Ga As (001), using x-ray photoemission spectroscopy and SQUID magnetometry. Distintic preparation procedures have been used with the purpose to undestand the origin of the ferromagneti signal observed for this system. It results that Ga segregation and chemical reactivity between Ga and Cr have negligible contribution in the formation of different thi films. A clear ferromagnetic response even at room temperature suggests the existence of a very thin interfacial layer formed that can eventually be burid during the growth process., Comment: 16 pages, 6 figures

Abstract

Magnesium alloys such as AZ91D, has been presented as potential material for temporary implant material since it has a mechanical performance suitable with bone tissue and also degrades in time. The fast degradation at early times of AZ91D alloy could be retarded applying bioactive sol-gel glass coatings. In this work, two compositions of known bioactive silica-glasses (58S and 68S) were synthetized by sol-gel method and deposited by dip coating to the magnesium substrates. The glasses were produced without using any nitrate precursor, avoiding the presence of remaining residual in the coatings that could be not beneficial to the body. The coatings presented an excellent bioactive response after immersion in Hanks' balanced salt solution (HBSS) at 37 °C, showing apatite related deposits after 72 h immersion detected by scanning electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Corrosion behaviour has been also analyzed, 58S presented as better protective features after 17 days of immersion. Cell attachment and proliferation tests demonstrate that both 58S and 68S coatings on AZ91D magnesium alloy are suitable as temporary implant materials.
