17. Global variation in the beta diversity of lake macrophytes is driven by environmental heterogeneity rather than latitude

Abstract

Aim: We studied global variation in beta diversity patterns of lake macrophytes using regional data from across the world. Specifically, we examined (1) how beta diversity of aquatic macrophytes is partitioned between species turnover and nestedness within each study region, and (2) which environmental characteristics structure variation in these beta diversity components. Location: Global. Methods: We used presence–absence data for aquatic macrophytes from 21 regions distributed around the world. We calculated pairwise‐site and multiple‐site beta diversity among lakes within each region using Sørensen dissimilarity index and partitioned it into turnover and nestedness coefficients. Beta regression was used to correlate the diversity coefficients with regional environmental characteristics. Results: Aquatic macrophytes showed different levels of beta diversity within each of the 21 study regions, with species turnover typically accounting for the majority of beta diversity, especially in high‐diversity regions. However, nestedness contributed 30–50% of total variation in macrophyte beta diversity in low‐diversity regions. The most important environmental factor explaining the three beta diversity coefficients (total, species turnover and nestedness) was elevation range, followed by relative areal extent of freshwater, latitude and water alkalinity range. Main conclusions: Our findings show that global patterns in beta diversity of lake macrophytes are caused by species turnover rather than by nestedness. These patterns in beta diversity were driven by natural environmental heterogeneity, notably variability in elevation range (also related to temperature variation) among regions. In addition, a greater range in alkalinity within a region, likely amplified by human activities, was also correlated with increased macrophyte beta diversity. Abstract

As part of the WFD implementation, Member-States must intercalibrate their ecological status evaluation systems in the context of geographical intercalibration groups (GIGs) working in comparable natural biogeographic zones and driving exercises targeted at the same typologies of watercourses (mainly based on integrated surface of the watershed at the survey site, mineralization of water and, if necessary, on altitude criteria). Phytobenthic assessment methods of the Central-Baltic GIG watercourses had been subjected to a first intercalibration cycle which was completed in 2007. Since that date, specific work has been carried out through the ECOSTAT Group in order to clarify and improve the criteria used for the validation of reference sites at the European level. That work could have changed the appropriate reference level to be retained by national watercourse type and, at the same time, the level of deviation from the appropriate reference used to establish the Ecological Status of European rivers. Therefore, it was considered necessary to renew the previous intercalibration work, following the revision of criteria for reference sites validation, by conducting a second round intercalibration involving 14 member states, or member states administrative areas using different evaluation systems. The present document is the final report of the 2nd "Central-Baltic" GIG Intercalibration Round for Rivers, currently submitted to E.U. validation.; Dans le cadre d'application de la DCE, les Etats-Membres doivent intercalibrer leurs systèmes d'évaluation de l'état écologique, dans le cadre de groupes géographiques d'intercalibration (GIGs) permettant de travailler sur des zones biogéographiques naturelles comparables, et dans le cadre d'exercices ciblés sur les mêmes typologies de cours d'eau (essentiellement basés sur la surface intégrée du bassin versant au site, la minéralisation de l'eau et, si nécessaire, sur des critères d'altitude). Les méthodes d'évaluation phytobenthiques des cours d'eau du GIG Central-Baltique avaient fait l'objet d'un premier cycle d'intercalibration qui s'est achevé en 2007. Depuis cette date, un travail spécifique a été mené sous l'égide du Groupe ECOSTAT pour préciser et améliorer les critères servant à la validation des sites de référence au niveau européen. Ces travaux ont pu changer le niveau de référence adéquat à retenir par type national de cours d'eau et, du même coup, le niveau d'écart à la référence adéquate servant à établir l'Etat Ecologique. De ce fait, il a été jugé nécessaire de renouveler les travaux d'intercalibration, suite à cette révision des critères de validation des sites de référence, par la réalisation d'un 2ème Round d'intercalibration auquel ont participé 14 Etats-Membres ou zones administratives différentes d'Etats-Membres utilisant un système d'évaluation différent. Le présent document constitue le rapport final du 2ème Round d'intercalibration des cours d'eau du GIG Central-Baltique, soumis à l'U.E. et actuellement en cours de validation.

Abstract

The present paper deals with computational structural mechanics, a combination of structural mechanics and numerical analysis. This field provides insight into the mechanical behavior of structures and allows an assessment of the chosen structural design. The paper is dedicated to E. Ramm on the occasion of his 60th birthday. It is divided into three parts focussing on different topics of computational structural mechanics. The first part is concerned with the determination of the level of loading of shotcrete tunnel shells. For this purpose, a hybrid method combining a material model fur shotcrete with in situ displacement measurements is employed. The second part contains results front numerical analysis of fastening devices cast. in concrete. Based on a realistic material model for concrete, the peak load and the failure mode obtained from the numerical analysis of an anchor bolt arc presented. The final part of this paper is devoted to loss of structural stability. an area of research to which Prof. Ramm has made many significant contributions. In particular, symmetric bifurcation buckling from a nonlinear prelickling path will be considered. Based oil a higher-order relationship from perturbation analysis. mathematical conditions for "border-line cases" of post-buckling will be presented. These cases identify the transition from imperfection sensitivity to insensitivity.

48. The acute medical management of detained Somali pirates and their captives.

Abstract

Over the last several years, piracy off the coast of East Africa has resulted in significant risks to merchant vessels and their crews. There have been multiple instances of both pirates being detained and captives being liberated by military vessels. The unique health concerns of this population have been minimally studied and military health providers must be prepared to identify and manage potential medical conditions. In an attempt to provide further guidance for providers, this article reviews the limited available literature and identifies potential health concerns of pirates and recently released captives. In addition to traumatic injuries, specific medical concerns that must be considered include infectious disease, wound management, dehydration, hypothermia, malnutrition, electrolyte disturbance, and potential psychiatric conditions. Infectious disease is also a major threat. Malaria, tuberculosis, and intestinal parasites likely pose the greatest risk. A careful medical screening along with an extensive intake history and physical examination are essential for rapid identification and initial management of this unique population.
