In this paper, we introduce the Dynamic Modularity-Spectral Algorithm (DynMSA), a novel approach to identify clusters of stocks with high intra-cluster correlations and low inter-cluster correlations by combining Random Matrix Theory with modularity optimisation and spectral clustering. The primary objective is to uncover hidden market structures and find diversifiers based on return correlations, thereby achieving a more effective risk-reducing portfolio allocation. We applied DynMSA to constituents of the S&P 500 and compared the results to sector- and market-based benchmarks. Besides the conception of this algorithm, our contributions further include implementing a sector-based calibration for modularity optimisation and a correlation-based distance function for spectral clustering. Testing revealed that DynMSA outperforms baseline models in intra- and inter-cluster correlation differences, particularly over medium-term correlation look-backs. It also identifies stable clusters and detects regime changes due to exogenous shocks, such as the COVID-19 pandemic. Portfolios constructed using our clusters showed higher Sortino and Sharpe ratios, lower downside volatility, reduced maximum drawdown and higher annualised returns compared to an equally weighted market benchmark.

The short-wave infrared (SWIR) is an underexploited portion of the electromagnetic spectrum in metasurface-based nanophotonics despite its strategic importance in sensing and imaging applications. This is mainly attributed to the lack of material systems to tailor light-matter interactions in this range. Herein, we address this limitation and demonstrate an all-dielectric silicon-integrated metasurface enabling polarization-induced Fano resonance control at SWIR frequencies. The platform consists of a two-dimensional Si/GeSn core/shell nanowire array on a silicon wafer. By tuning the light polarization, we show that the metasurface reflectance can be efficiently engineered due to Fano resonances emerging from the electric and magnetic dipoles competition. The interference of optically induced dipoles in high-index nanowire arrays offers additional degrees of freedom to tailor the directional scattering and the flow of light while enabling sharp polarization-modulated resonances. This tunability is harnessed in nanosensors yielding an efficient detection of 10^{-2} changes in the refractive index of the surrounding medium.

Strongly electric fish use gradients of ions within their bodies to generate stunning external electrical discharges; the most powerful of these organisms, the Atlantic torpedo ray, can produce pulses of over 1 kW from its electric organs. Despite extensive study of this phenomenon in nature, the development of artificial power generation schemes based on ion gradients for portable, wearable, or implantable human use has remained out of reach. Previously, inspired by the electric eel, we developed an artificial electric organ that generated electricity from ion gradients within stacked hydrogels and, like the eel, was optimized to deliver large voltages that exceeded 100 V. Due to its high internal resistance, the current of this power source was, however, too low to power standard electronics. Here we introduce an artificial electric organ that takes inspiration from the unique morphologies of torpedo rays for maximal current output. This power source uses a hybrid material of hydrogel-infused paper to create, organize, and reconfigure stacks of thin, arbitrarily large gel films both in series and in parallel. The resulting increase in electrical power by almost two orders of magnitude compared to the original eel-inspired design makes it possible to power electronic devices and establishes that biology's mechanism of generating significant electrical power can now be realized from benign and soft materials in a portable size., Comment: 34 pages, 10 figures, 1 table

We propose a hybrid device consisting of a graphene/silicon (Gr/Si) Schottky diode in parallel with a Gr/SiO2/Si capacitor for high-performance photodetection. The device, fabricated by transfer of commercial graphene on low-doped n-type Si substrate, achieves a photoresponse as high as 3 AW^(-1) and a normalized detectivity higher than 3.5 10^12 cmHz^(1/2) W^(-1) in the visible range. The device exhibits a photocurrent exceeding the forward current, because photo-generated minority carriers, accumulated at Si/SiO2 interface of the Gr/SiO2/Si capacitor, diffuse to the Gr/Si junction. We show that the same mechanism, when due to thermally generated carriers, although usually neglected or disregarded, causes the increased leakage often measured in Gr/Si heterojunctions. At room temperature, we measure a zero-bias Schottky barrier height of 0.52 eV, as well as an effective Richardson constant A**=4 10^(-5) Acm^(-2) K^(-2) and an ideality factor n=3.6, explained by a thin (< 1nm) oxide layer at the Gr/Si interface., Comment: Research paper. 26 pages, 8 figures
