In order to complement previous qualitative research and to provide explanations for contradictory findings, we have conducted a survey-study among Turkish-Dutch migrant patients (n=91), their family interpreters (n=91) and GP s (n=26) directly before and after a GP consultation. First, we compared the expectations of the three parties to seven roles of the family interpreter using Habermas’ Lifeworld versus System theory: ‘conduit,’ ‘institutional gatekeeper’ (System roles); and ‘advocate,’ ‘emotional support’, ‘information source,’ ‘cultural informant’ and ‘counselor’ (Lifeworld roles) (Mishler 1984). Second, patients’ expectations of the family interpreters’ role were linked to their perceived control of the consultation and trust in family interpreters.Results show a discrepancy between, on the one hand, the roles expected by GP s, who mainly expected the system role of ‘conduit,’ and, on the other hand, family interpreters and patients, who mainly expected lifeworld agent roles from the family interpreter. Moreover, patients’ expectations of the lifeworld agent roles (especially the ‘emotional support’ role) were positively related to patients’ increased perceived control and trust in the family interpreters. Thus, our study indicates that patients do not expect a neutral conduit role from family interpreters, but rather appreciate interpreters who provide emotional support, extra information to the GP, cultural brokering and advocacy.

Background: Though artificial intelligence (AI) in healthcare has great potential, medicine has been slow to adopt AI tools. Barriers and facilitators to clinical AI implementation among healthcare professionals (the end-users) are ill defined, nor have appropriate implementation strategies to overcome them been suggested. Therefore, we aim to study these barriers and facilitators, and find general insights that could be applicable to a wide variety of AI-tool implementations in clinical practice. Methods: We conducted a mixed-methods study encompassing individual interviews, a focus group, and a nationwide survey. End-users of AI in healthcare (physicians) from various medical specialties were included. We performed deductive direct content analysis, using the Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research (CFIR) for coding. CFIR constructs were entered into the Expert Recommendations for Implementing Change (ERIC) to find suitable implementation strategies. Quantitative survey data was descriptively analyzed. Results: We performed ten individual interviews, and one focus group with five physicians. The most prominent constructs identified during the qualitative interim analyses were incorporated in the nationwide survey, which had 106 survey respondents. We found nine CFIR constructs important to AI implementation: evidence strength, relative advantage, adaptability, trialability, structural characteristics, tension for change, compatibility, access to knowledge and information, and knowledge and beliefs about the intervention. Consequently, the ERIC tool displayed the following strategies: identify and prepare champions, conduct educational meetings, promote adaptability, develop educational materials, and distribute educational materials. Conclusions: The potential value of AI in healthcare is acknowledged by end-users, however, the current tension for change needs to be sparked to facilitate sustainable implementation. Strategies that should be used are: increasing the access to knowledge and information through educational meetings and materials with committed local leaders. A trial phase for end-users to test and compare AI algorithms. Lastly, algorithms should be tailored to be adaptable to the local context and existing workflows. Applying these implementation strategies will bring us one step closer to realizing the value of AI in healthcare.

Educators in professional higher education experience difficulties addressing students' self-awareness in their courses. The topic is often dismissed by students as vague' or irrelevant'. This is detrimental for learning since knowing who you are and who you want to be is crucial: it guides behaviour and helps to feel balanced and in control. Support is needed to trigger students' self-awareness and to make this process less demanding. In this paper we present guidelines for interactive triggers supporting students in developing their self-awareness. We asked students to discuss self-made photos in small groups and offered them three paper prototypes of triggers to work with. Questionnaire results and analysis of students' discussions resulted in insights on how these triggers provoke distinct interaction and support self-awareness. Insights in advantages and disadvantages of the triggers can be used to design and implement innovative interactive systems that engage students in the process of developing self-awareness.

The authors investigate the potential of Mixed Reality (MR) games for team building and assessment. The AMELIO game was designed for a highly immersive MR lab. The game is a multi-player team challenge based on the concept of an escape room, staged in a space colony emergency situation. An explorative empirical pre-post measurement study was carried out to establish whether playing AMELIO influences team cohesiveness. Ten teams of three played AMELIO and filled out pre- and post-game questionnaires with validated measurements of team cohesiveness and mediating factors related to team composition, game experience and team dynamics. The findings show a positive and significant increase in team cohesiveness, with stronger effects for teams with lower pre-game familiarity. In terms of game experience and team dynamics, audio aesthetics and empathy proved to be significant mediating factors. This AIDS game validation and improvement, and understanding and guiding the team building process.

This paper reports a study on the impact of different usage patterns of an automated blinds system on the energy consumption for heating and cooling in a Dutch office building. A five-month observational field study in 40 offices resulted into a dataset on the blinds usage of four types of blind users. This data was used to simulate the effect of the blinds usage on the energy consumption for heating and cooling. The results of the field study show that a majority of the building occupants switched off the automatic mode of the blinds system permanently. The simulation results indicate that this significantly impacts the energy consumption in the building. The total daily average energy consumption for heating and cooling was significantly lower for occupants using the automatic mode than for the three groups of manual users (871W/day versus 2573W/day; T=-5.98, p=0.000).

This study applies ordinal confirmatory factor analysis for multiple groups to assess equivalence of scale, random errors and systematic (nonrandom) errors of attitudinal questions surveyed on rating scales under different survey modes (Face-to-Face [F2F], Telephone, Paper, and Web). Empirical findings from a large-scale experiment are presented. Consistent with theoretical expectations, interviewer- and self-administered surveys measured all assessed questions on systematically different scales, with different systematic bias, and with differing extents of random error. These measurement effects were absent when comparing Paper with Web or F2F with Telephone. It is concluded that modes impact primarily systematic measurement effects affecting multiple items equally. Interviewer- and self-administered modes should only be combined with great care in mixed-mode surveys that focus on attitudinal constructs. Combining Paper and Web or Telephone and F2F are the viable options. Thereby choosing the self-administered modes appears more efficient, because these modes exhibited higher indicator reliabilities (smaller random error) than the interviewer modes.

Item does not contain fulltext The present study described a new reading game (Letterprins), designed to improve the reading development of children with reading problems. Letterprins contains a series of reading-related tasks, based on previous research, which have been shown to facilitate children’s reading development. In order to ensure treatment fidelity integrity the game is played in collaboration with a parent or caregiver. The parent/caregiver needs to indicate the correctness of the child’s responses. The app adjusts the exercises based on the child’s performance, and thereby optimizes learning. The app addresses reading development at the sound, word, and sentence level, and thereby captures a large range of the stages in early reading development.

Lighting in video games is used to set moods and atmosphere, or can serve as a gameplay tool. This paper examines the effects lighting concepts can have on a virtual game environment on the players’ navigation within the game. Previously known lighting concepts were tested in a virtual environment to determine if they have a similar effect on the perception of the presented virtual space as they do in real life, as well as the effect they have on the navigational behavior of players. In a game-experiment with 50 male participants we show that the previously known lighting concepts apply to the virtual environment in a similar manner as they do in real life, although the effects on the navigational behavior of the participants remain inconclusive.

The depression prevention video game SPARX was shown to be equally as effective as the classroom-based depression prevention program 'Op Volle Kracht' (OVK) in reducing depressive symptoms among adolescents girls. Because video games are known for their engaging qualities, this study examined possible motivational benefits of SPARX compared to OVK. No differences in autonomous and controlled motivation were found between conditions at any time point. However, OVK was negatively associated with autonomous motivation during the program, while SPARX and the OVK and SPARX combined were associated negatively with controlled motivation during the programs. Additionally, autonomous motivation and controlled motivation at the start of the interventions and controlled motivation half-way through the interventions was found to positively influence long-term depressive symptoms. Results indicate that depression prevention programs including video games can beneficially influence motivation. Further research is needed to delineate the effects of video game prevention programs on motivation.

20% of Dutch youth suffer from psychiatric disorders that hamper their daily functioning and their personal development. Clients tend to drop out of school and have problems in their social environment. These clients often suffer from low social competencies and low empathic behavior, resulting in low treatment compliance. The study targets treatment motivation in order to prevent therapy dropout by introducing playful interventions. Amongst others, social problem situations that arise from interactions between clients and their socio-cultural environment often lead to aggressive behavior and behavioral problems. It is not only the client, but also the reaction of the environment that plays an important part in the aggravation of clients’ problems. We focus on the group as a whole in order to gain insight these social interactions, to make them explicit and tangible, in an attempt to help clients (and their environment) to play and learn from these interactions, in order to contribute to a better social climate.

The aim of this study is to understand neurology patients, family and caregivers experiences of in-patient care environments and to investigate the aspects of the healing process that can be supported by the environment. Our goal is to identify the role the environment plays during the process of being treated for and recovering from a stroke. The stroke patient’s description of experiences during hospitalization will help researchers, medical professionals and architects in adjusting the environment according to their specific needs. A set of research methods was used to capture the experience, changing the role of researcher as an observer to a participatory approach, integrating the caregivers as creators of the research data [1], [2]. These methods included: shadowing, observation and interviewing, allowing nurses to describe their experiences and to obtain a voice in decision making. We built insights from healing environment literature combined with own field studies. Specific environmental needs identified include: dosing stimulus load, having social support, having access to single patient rooms, balancing clinical and personal environments, having a clear structure of the day, undisturbed sleeping and the need for information.

Cooperative driving for trucks has been claimed to bring substantial benefits for society and fleet owners because of better throughput and reduced fuel consumption, but benefits for truck drivers are questionable. While most work on cooperative driving focuses on the technology, the current paper focuses on the consequences for drivers and how to deal with those. Two concepts are proposed and evaluated. One concept supports drivers in coordinating cooperative driving with other truck drivers to locate, join, and quit platoons. The other concept provides drivers of following trucks with situation awareness by means of a "see through" system displaying camera images from the lead vehicle. A user evaluation in a driving simulator confirms that cooperative driving may have largely negative benefits for truck drivers, and that concepts such as the ones described in this paper may help to improve the cooperative driving situation for truck drivers.
