A recent thread in public administration research suggests that public service motivation (PSM) may have a dark side. However, empirical research supporting this assumption remains scarce. In this study, we build on and combine previous theoretical studies on the relationship between PSM and (im)morality. In particular, we test whether highly public-service motivated individuals vary their justification of an unethical behavior when the value advanced by this behavior safeguards or puts at risk their interpretation of the public interest. The research design combines two vignettes and various survey questions. Using a sample of more than 1500 citizens in Catalonia (Spain), we provide initial support for a dark side of PSM: justification of unethical behavior. The results for vignette A confirm our hypotheses, while the results for vignette B are insignificant. The discussion addresses the different findings, and provides directions for future research.

The cultivation of algae either in open raceway ponds or in closed bioreactors could allow the renewable production of biomass for food, pharmaceutical, cosmetic, or chemical industries. Optimal cultivation conditions are however required to ensure that the production of these compounds is both efficient and economical. Therefore, high-frequency analytical measurements are required to allow timely process control and to detect possible disturbances during algae growth. Such analytical methods are only available to a limited extent. Therefore, we introduced a method for monitoring algae release volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the headspace above a bioreactor in real time. This method is based on ion mobility spectrometry (IMS) in combination with a membrane inlet (MI). The unique feature of IMS is that complete spectra are detected in real time instead of sum signals. These spectral patterns produced in the ion mobility spectrum were evaluated automatically via principal component analysis (PCA). The detected peak patterns are characteristic for the respective algae culture; allow the assignment of the individual growth phases and reflect the influence of experimental parameters. These results allow for the first time a continuous monitoring of the algae cultivation and thus an early detection of possible disturbances in the biotechnological process.

Inleiding: Docenten in het Nederlands voortgezet onderwijs (VO) hebben een bovengemiddeld stressvol beroep. Er is al jarenlang geen sector in Nederland waar meer burn-outklachten worden ervaren dan in het onderwijs. Het is om die reden erg relevant en urgent om antwoorden op deze werkstress te formuleren vanuit HR-beleid. Dit onderzoek achterhaalt daarom in hoeverre maatwerkafspraken bij kunnen dragen aan het verlagen van de werkstress van docenten. Hierbij zijn ook de levensfase van de docent en de relatie met de leidinggevende getoetst als voorwaarden voor dit verband. Ook is de autonomie van de docent onderzocht als mogelijke verklaring voor het hoofdverband. Hierbij staat het Demands-Control Model (DCM) centraal, waarbij autonomie als sturingsmogelijkheid kan bijdragen aan het verlagen van werkstress. Methode: De onderzoeksvragen zijn cross-sectioneel onderzocht, waarbij de data verzameld is door een online vragenlijst te verspreiden onder docenten in het VO (N = 163). Resultaten: De uitkomsten van dit onderzoek bevestigen het verband tussen maatwerk en het verlagen van werkstress. Autonomie is daarbij een verklarende variabele, omdat deze een significant mediërend effect had op het hoofdverband. Daarnaast is de levensfase van de docent een significante moderator gebleken. Enkel de hypothese omtrent het modererende effect van de relatie met de leidinggevende is ontkracht, maar deze variabele fungeerde wel als significante mediator. Discussie: Dit onderzoek onderstreept de toepasbaarheid van het DCM in de VO-sector. Ook wordt de positieve werking van maatwerk in deze sector bevonden, ondanks de maatwerkrestricties die de VO-sector kent. Dit onderzoek geeft tevens aanbevelingen aan alle relevante actoren van maatwerkvorming. Conclusie: De hoofdvraag van dit onderzoek kan bevestigend beantwoord worden. This article systematically reviews 93 theoretical and empirical articles and books on the topic of teacher leadership. The included studies are analyzed on the basis of the following themes: (1) definitions of teacher leadership, (2) antecedents of teacher leadership, (3) outcomes of teacher leadership, and (4) methodological quality of studies on teacher leadership. Based on our analysis we develop a conceptual framework unifying the current knowledge about teacher leadership, its definitions, and its antecedents and outcomes at different levels of analysis. We highlight the current methodological limitations of the included studies and point out avenues for further development of the field of teacher leadership. In particular, we call for more (1) conceptual clarity, (2) cross-country research designs, (3) research designs eliminating endogeneity problems, and (4) attention for the potential ‘dark sides’ of teacher leadership.

A frequently cited recommendation of public service motivation (PSM) research is to use PSM in the context of HR marketing. However, empirical evidence demonstrating the usefulness of addressing PSM in the recruitment process is limited. Moreover, we know little about the relative importance of PSM for public employers’ attractiveness. We address this gap using an experimental research design to investigate whether public service motivated individuals differ from extrinsically motivated individuals in terms of their attraction to organizations that emphasize either “traditional” public or private values in their employer branding. Our findings indicate that public service motivated individuals are attracted neither to public nor to private values in employer branding. Furthermore, individuals with very high levels of extrinsic motivation are more attracted to private values employer branding than to public values employer branding and to the control group.

De overgang kan gepaard gaan met vervelende klachten, zoals opvliegers, emotionele instabiliteit en spier- en gewrichtsklachten (Nederlands Huisartsen Genootschap, 2019). Overgangsklachten hebben niet alleen effect op de vrouw als individu, maar ook op een lagere baan- en organisatiebetrokkenheid (Jack et al., 2014). Driekwart van de vrouwen die hulp zoekt vanwege overgangsklachten vormen een groot risico op ziekteverlof en definitief verloop (Geukes, Van Aalst, Robroek, Laven & Oosterhof (2016). In de zorgsector zijn hoge verzuim- en verloopcijfers, de werkdruk loopt op en de kwaliteit van zorg staat onder druk (Van der Aalst, 2019). 40 procent van de zorgmedewerkers in de overgangsleeftijd, merkt dat hun werk eronder leidt (IZZ, 2019). Bij zorgorganisatie Pluryn werkt een groot aantal vrouwen in de overgangsleeftijd. Ook hier wordt gemerkt dat de overgang een negatieve invloed kan hebben op het welzijn van deze vrouwen. Om het welzijn van deze vrouwen optimaal te bevorderen, staat de volgende vraag centraal: Welke behoeften hebben vrouwen in de overgang ter bevordering van hun welzijn en hoe sluiten de huidige HR-praktijken (van Pluryn) hierop aan? Voor dit onderzoek zijn vijftien vrouwen met overgangsklachten geïnterviewd. Gebaseerd op het theoretisch kader is voor deze semigestructureerde interviews een vragenlijst opgesteld. Hierin zijn de volgende topics opgenomen: de overgang, welzijn, behoeften (leidinggevende, collega’s, fysieke werkomgeving en organisatiesteun) en ervaring met huidige hulpbronnen. De resultaten uit dit onderzoek bevestigen dat de behoeften die vrouwen in de overgang mogelijk hebben, kunnen worden onderverdeeld in vier categorieën: 1) steun van leidinggevenden, 2) steun van collega’s, 3) aanpassingen in de fysieke werkomgeving en 4) organisatorische steun (Kopenhager & Guidozzi, 2015; Griffiths et al., 2016; Jack et al., 2016; Hardy et al., 2017; Hickey et al., 2017). When employees experience conflicting values at an organizational level, both personal values as well as group values play a role in employee decision-making. This research had two goals. The first was to give more clearity in the exact role that personal values and group values can play in decision-making. The second goal was to explore how employees use their personal- and group values when making decisions in situations with conflicting organizational values. By conducting 15 semi-structured interviews, evidence was found for the relative high weight of group values in decision-making at the cost of personal values. Against expectations the personal values only seemed to have an indirect influence on employee decision-making in situations with conflicting organizational values. The scientific and practical implications of these findings are also discussed.

Burn-out is seen as a growing problem among Dutch lawyers. A dominant theory in explaining burn-out is Job Demands -Resources theory. To provide insight into the unique and specific context of the Dutch legal profession, this thesis researches red tape as a job demand, combining professional literature and governance theory with organizational- and HR-literature. Furthermore, the potential role of Job Crafting as a personal resource through which lawyers can cope with red tape, is investigated. Through primarily regression analysis of survey data of N=191 lawyers, strong evidence was found for a positive relationship between all dimensions of red tape and burn-out. As in previous research, Job Resource showed conflicting results and thus proved ultimately insignificant as a moderator. This might have been caused in part by methodical- and sample issues that prevented the analysis of the separate job crafting strategies. Herein lie opportunities for future research regarding burn-out among (classic) professionals, ideally using a larger sample size and a longitudinal approach to shed light on causal pathways and the possibility of reverse causality between red tape and burn-out.

Doel: Dit onderzoek poogt de relatie tussen perceived employability en professionele turnoverintenties te verklaren. Dit wordt gedaan door enerzijds perceived employability te operationaliseren in vier dimensies die de perceptie van het individu bevatten om een andere (kwantitatief) of betere (kwalitatief) baan te vinden op de interne of externe arbeidsmarkt. Anderzijds wordt de relatie tussen perceived employability en professionele turnoverintentie geprobeerd te verklaren door LMX als contextvariabele mee te nemen. Methode: De data is verzameld middels een online vragenlijst bij de GGZ-instelling Altrecht. De hypotheses zijn getest met data die is verkregen uit een steekproef van 353 participanten. Resultaten: Er is geen relatie gevonden voor interne kwalitatieve perceived employability en professionele turnoverintentie. Zowel interne kwantitatieve perceived employability als externe kwantitatieve perceived employability hangt negatief samen met professionele turnoverintentie. Externe kwalitatieve perceived employability hangt positief samen met professionele turnoverintentie. LMX heeft geen modererend effect op de relatie tussen perceived employabilityen professionele turnoverintentie, maar wel een directe negatieve samenhang met professionele turnoverintentie. Conclusie: De perceptie van het individu betreffende de interne (kwantitatief) en externe (kwalitatief en kwantitatief) arbeidsmarkt zijn belangrijk voor het al dan niet ontwikkelen van professionele turnoverintentie. Daarnaast blijkt LMX als contextvariabele, geen verklaring te bieden voor de relatie tussen perceived employability en professionele turnoverintentie.
