Athlete age-grouping and age-banding has been shown to impact sport participation and athlete development. The current study examined the impact of within-year (WYEs) and between-year effects (BYEs), and their interactions with playing position, on female participation in elite German football. The sample of 1,378 German first-league players revealed expected participation inequities within-year with relatively older players being over-represented and younger players being under-represented. From a between-year perspective there were no participation differences. The interaction of WYEs and BYEs revealed an over-representation of odd-year players in Q1, and Q2 in even years. With respect to the interaction between year effects and playing position, for WYEs the expected effect was present for goalkeepers and defenders, while there was no significant interaction for BYEs. Overall, the results offer insight regarding the impact of system structure on participation, and highlight unique characteristics associated with playing positions.

Talent selection ,Talent development ,Judgment and decision making ,Sport analytics ,Coaches ,Scouts ,Psychology ,BF1-990 - Abstract
When making talent-selection decisions in sport, coaches, scouts, program directors, and policymakers typically adopt two approaches: The subjective approach, also known as the coach's eye, where these professionals select or de-select athletes based on their personal observations and impressions; and the objective approach, where they apply a multi-faceted formula for awarding scores to the athletes' motor skills (such as agility and coordination) and psychological capabilities (such as leadership and motivation) – as a mean for predicting their future success. These two approaches are often perceived as complementary in the strive to reach optimal selection decisions in sport. In this conceptualized article, we examine challenges associated with such talent-selection decisions, and address the coach's eye as an example of a subjective assessment approach. We also address the concept of fast and frugal heuristics for making selection decisions in sport, while elaborating on bounded rationality and the human machine paradigm. Finally, in addition to discussing certain ''built-in'' limitations in sport-selection decisions, based on judgment and decision-making models, we provide a rationale for adding the big-data approach, as a mean for enhancing links between the subjective and objective assessments currently used in talent-selection decisions in sport.

- Abstract
This literature review provides an overview of the various modern approaches in talent programs for the context of schools and sports reported in scientific journals (2009-2019) and presents their similarities and differences and options for cross-pollination between contexts. This is a first attempt to overarch contexts regarding talent identification and development. Searches in 12 databases yielded 31 studies. Similarities and differences between contexts were distilled through a qualitative content analysis and described for the identification of talent and talent development. Based on these results, it is suggested that school contexts might benefit from including a talent transfer pathway, differentiating for maturity-level and sex, emphasizing on deliberate practice, monitoring load-ability, and applying acceleration, which are proposed approaches in the sport context. Furthermore, several approaches from the school context could enhance talent programs in sport, including universal screening, paying attention to underserved populations, focusing on creativity and enrichment as well as enhancing the accountability and education level of trainers/coaches. Future studies need to evaluate the efficacy and feasibility of approaches in practice. Moreover, the search could be expanded to other countries to establish a more global view while examining national patterns regarding policy and funding contexts in which programs are located.

IntroductionHandball goalkeepers have to act under severe spatio-temporal pressure in both standardised (e.g., 7 m penalty) and non-standardised situations (e.g., backcourt throws) which require them to predict action outcome before ball flight is visible. So far, research on goalkeepers’ cue utilisation for anticipation of an opponent’s action has mainly focused on 7 m throw situations whereas little attention has been paid to the latter, more complex and far more frequently occurring backcourt throw situations.MethodsTo address this gap, we conducted semi-structured interviews with N = 6 expert handball goalkeepers and goalkeeper coaches [all of whom were (former) expert handball goalkeepers] on anticipation and cue utilisation when facing backcourt throws. The interviews were subsequently transcribed, coded and results were inductively as well as deductively categorised by means of a thematic analysis.ResultsResults reveal a variety of kinematic and contextual cues relevant for action anticipation that become available before the game and before or during the throw. Participants reported to use information from the offence (e.g., thrower’s jump; opposing team’s task distribution) and the defence (e.g., defensive players’ strategies, block position) for anticipation in backcourt throw situations. Additionally, we identified several factors that influence cue availability and utilisation.DiscussionOur findings provide a thorough basis to (a) guide future research that yields questions on kinematic and contextual cue integration and in-situ cue usage as well as (b) inform the development of training programs to foster goalkeepers’ anticipatory skill.

Abstract Teacher education has the task of providing scientifically grounded knowledge for basic orientation for an inclusive education system for all teacher training programs. Using the example of the project "Action Strategies for Heterogeneous Classes - OER for Teacher Education", the article shows how the development and quality assurance of Open Educational Resources (OER) for the qualification for inclusive education can take place. Based on project experiences, it outlines (1.) how OER could be developed for prospective teachers to design and reflect on inclusive education, (2.) tested by university teachers and students, and (3.) how the quality of the resulting materials could be evaluated and further developed. The developed materials are evaluated with three methodological approaches (“Thinking Aloud”-method, group discussion with lecturers). The paper presents the results of qualitative research approaches. From this, insights on different levels of higher education didactic action for the potentials of OER for the qualification of teachers for inclusive education can be derived.

Background: The reduction of muscular hypertonia is important in the treatment of various diseases or rehabilitation. This study aims to test the efficacy of a 5 Hz mechanical muscle stimulation (tapotement massage) in comparison to a 5 Hz repetitive peripheral magnetic stimulation (rPMS) on the neuromuscular reflex response. Methods: In a randomized control trial, 15 healthy volunteers were administered with either 5 Hz rPMS, tapotement massage, or rPMS sham stimulation. The posterior tibial nerve was stimulated with rPMS and sham stimulation. The Achilles tendon was exposed to a mechanically applied high-amplitude 5 Hz repetitive tendon tapotement massage (rTTM). The tendon reflex (TR) was measured for the spinal response of the soleus muscle. Results: After rPMS, there was a reduction of the TR response (−9.8%, p ≤ 0.034) with no significant changes after sham stimulation. Likewise, TR decreased significantly (−17.4%, p ≤ 0.002) after Achilles tendon tapotement intervention. Conclusions: These findings support the hypothesis that both afferent 5 Hz sensory stimulations contributed to a modulation within the spinal and/or supraspinal circuits, which resulted in a reduction of the spinal reflex excitability. The effects could be beneficial for patients with muscle hypertonia and could improve the functional results of rehabilitation programs.

[ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Although relative age effects in sports have been studied worldwide, the underlying mechanisms are still under debate. This study adds to the existing knowledge by providing a further exploration of the within-year and between-year effects and their possible interaction in an individual skill/technique based sport: table tennis. Data of male and female elite players across ages (U15, U18, U21, and senior) were collected from the ranking lists in international (world and Europe) and national contexts (France and the Netherlands). A multi-way frequency analysis per subsample revealed (1) no interaction effects; (2) significant within-year and between-year effects for the U15 players in the international context and male French players; (3) a significant within-year effect in the French U18 category; (4) a significant within-year effect in female European U21; and (5) no within-year effects in the senior category. Table tennis seems to be at risk for within-year and between-year effects specifically within the context of high competitive level for younger players (U15, males, and females), but not for interactions between these effects. Future research should reveal the development of the RAEs over time in a longitudinal study, evaluate influencing constraints, and innovative prevention solutions in a more comprehensive way.

Abstract The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic represents a considerable risk for the general public and especially for health care workers. To avoid an overloading of the health care system and to control transmission chains, the development of rapid and cost-effective techniques allowing for the reliable diagnosis of individuals with acute respiratory infections are crucial. Uniquely, the present study focuses on the development of a direct face mask sampling approach, as worn (i.e., used) disposable face masks contain exogenous environmental constituents, as well as endogenously exhaled breath aerosols. Optical techniques—and specifically infrared (IR) molecular spectroscopic techniques—are promising tools for direct virus detection at the surface of such masks. In the present study, a rapid and non-destructive approach for monitoring exposure scenarios via medical face masks using attenuated total reflection infrared spectroscopy is presented. Complementarily, IR external reflection spectroscopy was evaluated in comparison for rapid mask analysis. The utility of a face mask-based sampling approach was demonstrated by differentiating water, proteins, and virus-like particles sampled onto the mask. Data analysis using multivariate statistical algorithms enabled unambiguously classifying spectral signatures of individual components and biospecies. This approach has the potential to be extended towards the rapid detection of SARS-CoV-2—as shown herein for the example of virus-like particles which are morphologically equivalent to authentic virus—without any additional sample preparation or elaborate testing equipment at laboratory facilities. Therefore, this strategy may be implemented as a routine large-scale monitoring routine, e.g., at health care institutions, nursing homes, etc. ensuring the health and safety of medical personnel.

ABSTRACT The pirarucu, Arapaima gigas is a native, carnivorous fish species from the Amazon basin. As carnivorous fish have low amylase activity, exogenous enzymes can improve the digestibility of carbohydrates in aquaculture feeds. We evaluated the digestibility of increasing levels of an enzymatic complex in diets of pirarucu juveniles (65.2 ± 0.4 g). The experimental design was randomized with four treatments [diets containing 0.25, 0.50, 0.75, and 1 g kg-1 on-top inclusion of an enzyme complex (Allzyme® SSF®, USA), and a control, with three replications at a density of 5 fish per unit, and a 30-day duration. We quantified apparent digestibility of dry matter, crude protein, and crude energy through nutrient and chromium oxide content in diets and feces. Enzymatic activity, hepatic glycogen and total protein were determined in liver and anterior intestine samples. The diet with 1 g kg-1 of enzyme-complex resulted in an increase in apparent digestibility of crude protein, gross energy, and dry matter, hepatic glycogen, total proteins in liver and in intestine, showing the efficiency of the enzyme complex in pirarucu feeding. A higher accumulation of dry matter, crude energy, and ethereal extract in the carcass indicated weight increase in the fish treated with enzymatic complex. A decrease in the endogenous enzymatic activity (protease, lipase and amylase) suggested an improved efficacy of the digestive process. Our results indicate that the inclusion of 1 g kg-1 enzyme complex in the diet of juvenile pirarucu can be recommended to achieve greater digestibility of nutrients and improvement in productive performance.

- Abstract
Cercospora leaf spot (CLS) disease caused by the ascomycete Cercospora beticolais the most widespread fungal leaf disease in sugar beet. Fungicides of two active ingredient classes, quinone-outside inhibitors (QoIs) and demethylation inhibitors (DMIs), were important tools for CLS control. Over the years, C. beticolahas become resistant to QoIs and a sensitivity shift has been reported for DMIs. In this study, the mechanisms causing variation in DMI sensitivity in C. beticolaisolates from Europe were analyzed. The CYP51 mutations I387M, Y464S, and L144F were detected in many isolates, and most isolates carried the L144F in combination with mutation I309T. Furthermore, single isolates with other mutation combinations have been found. Wildtype isolates were found in low frequency in all European countries. Isolates that contained L144F showed higher EC50values than those without L144F. Ranges of EC50values of different CYP51 haplotypes were overlapping, an indication that other resistance mechanisms are present. Mutation L144F is more frequently encoded by codon TTC (96%) than by TTT (4%), and the usage of codon TTC was correlated with increased EC50values, this being more pronounced for difenoconazole than for mefentrifluconazole. In addition, it could be observed that the usage of codon GAG for E at amino acid position 170, instead of GAA, was more frequently found in isolates with a higher adaptation compared with haplotypes that did not contain L144F. Overall, GAA was present in 67% of all isolates and GAG in 33%, with an unequal distribution within the haplotypes. These data indicate that target site mutations, especially L144F haplotypes, influence DMI sensitivity and that in L144F haplotypes, L144F codon usage might be responsible for variations within L144F haplotypes. The codon usage for E170 may influence sensitivity and increase EC50variation of wildtype isolates and isolates with “weak” mutations, but not in L144F haplotypes.

The “moderate-to-high-risk” surgical patient is typically older, frail, malnourished, suffering from multiple comorbidities and presenting with unhealthy life style such as smoking, hazardous drinking and sedentarity. Poor aerobic fitness, sarcopenia and “toxic” behaviors are modifiable risk factors for major postoperative complications. The physiological challenge of lung cancer surgery has been likened to running a marathon. Therefore, preoperative patient optimization or “ prehabilitation “ should become a key component of improved recovery pathways to enhance general health and physiological reserve prior to surgery. During the short preoperative period, the patients are more receptive and motivated to adhere to behavioral interventions (e.g., smoking cessation, weaning from alcohol, balanced food intake and active mobilization) and to follow a structured exercise training program. Sufficient protein intake should be ensured (1.5–2 g/kg/day) and nutritional defects should be corrected to restore muscle mass and strength. Currently, there is strong evidence supporting the effectiveness of various modalities of physical training (endurance training and/or respiratory muscle training) to enhance aerobic fitness and to mitigate the risk of pulmonary complications while reducing the hospital length of stay. Multimodal interventions should be individualized to the patient's condition. These bundle of care are more effective than single or sequential intervention owing to synergistic benefits of education, nutritional support and physical training. An effective prehabilitation program is necessarily patient-centred and coordinated among health care professionals (nurses, primary care physician, physiotherapists, nutritionists) to help the patient regain some control over the disease process and improve the physiological reserve to sustain surgical stress.

Perioperative fluid balance has a major impact on clinical and functional outcome, regardless of the type of interventions. In thoracic surgery, patients are more vulnerable to intravenous fluid overload and to develop acute respiratory distress syndrome and other complications. New insight has been gained on the mechanisms causing pulmonary complications and the role of the endothelial glycocalix layer to control fluid transfer from the intravascular to the interstitial spaces and to promote tissue blood flow. With the implementation of standardized processes of care, the preoperative fasting period has become shorter, surgical approaches are less invasive and patients are allowed to resume oral intake shortly after surgery. Intraoperatively, body fluid homeostasis and adequate tissue oxygen delivery can be achieved using a normovolemic therapy targeting a “near-zero fluid balance” or a goal-directed hemodynamic therapy to maximize stroke volume and oxygen delivery according to the Franck–Starling relationship. In both fluid strategies, the use of cardiovascular drugs is advocated to counteract the anesthetic-induced vasorelaxation and maintain arterial pressure whereas fluid intake is limited to avoid cumulative fluid balance exceeding 1 liter and body weight gain (~1-1.5 kg). Modern hemodynamic monitors provide valuable physiological parameters to assess patient volume responsiveness and circulatory flow while guiding fluid administration and cardiovascular drug therapy. Given the lack of randomized clinical trials, controversial debate still surrounds the issues of the optimal fluid strategy and the type of fluids (crystalloids versus colloids). To avoid the risk of lung hydrostatic or inflammatory edema and to enhance the postoperative recovery process, fluid administration should be prescribed as any drug, adapted to the patient's requirement and the context of thoracic intervention.

More than 70 years after its original report, the hypoxic pulmonary vasoconstriction (HPV) response continues to spark scientific interest on its mechanisms and clinical implications, particularly for anesthesiologists involved in thoracic surgery. Selective airway intubation and one-lung ventilation (OLV) facilitates the surgical intervention on a collapsed lung while the HPV redirects blood flow from the “upper” non-ventilated hypoxic lung to the “dependent” ventilated lung. Therefore, by limiting intrapulmonary shunting and optimizing ventilation-to-perfusion (V/Q) ratio, the fall in arterial oxygen pressure (PaO2) is attenuated during OLV. The HPV involves a biphasic response mobilizing calcium within pulmonary vascular smooth muscles, which is activated within seconds after exposure to low alveolar oxygen pressure and that gradually disappears upon re-oxygenation. Many factors including acid-base balance, the degree of lung expansion, circulatory volemia as well as lung diseases and patient age affect HPV. Anesthetic agents, analgesics and cardiovascular medications may also interfer with HPV during the perioperative period. Since HPV represents the homeostatic mechanism for regional ventilation-to-perfusion matching and in turn, for optimal pulmonary oxygen uptake, a clear understanding of HPV is clinically relevant for all anesthesiologists.
