Postgraduate pharmacy residencies are essential in preparing graduates for pharmacy careers. Residencies are highly competitive and despite efforts to increase the number of residency programs in the United States, the demand still outweighs the supply. Attaining a residency interview is a critical step in securing a residency position. The objective of this scoping review is to describe the published literature on factors associated with attaining a pharmacy residency interview. The updated Arksey and O'Malley scoping review framework was followed for this scoping review. The review is reported according to The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta‐Analyses Extension for Protocols and Scoping Reviews (PRISMA‐ScR). The search strategy contained a combination of medical subject headings (MeSH) and keywords from a review of article title and abstracts. The inclusion and exclusion criteria were created a priori. English language studies describing pharmacy residency interview, selection, rubrics, and descriptive, quantitative, or qualitative data were included. Title and abstracts were independently reviewed, followed by independent full‐text reviews. Covidence©, an online systematic review platform, was used in the screening, review, and selection process. Thirteen studies assessing factors associated with a residency interview met inclusion criteria. The majority of these studies (n = 7) analyzed data from residency program director (RPD) surveys. Most of these studies found that RPDs highly value letters of recommendation when evaluating a candidate's application. Three studies analyzed retrospective data. Several studies focused on letters of recommendation. The studies described letters of recommendation, letters of intent, grade point average, and leadership experience as factors associated with attaining a residency interview. Previous studies have identified high rates of burnout among health care workers and health professions faculty. Despite interventions being showcased at national meetings in both posters and platform presentations, there is minimal peer-reviewed published research focusing on professional well-being interventions and their assessments specific to pharmacy faculty. This commentary serves as a call to action to design and publish research related to work-system interventions to decrease burnout and promote professional well-being among all academic pharmacy faculty, and particularly subgroups who may be most at risk, such as women and assistant-level faculty. Objective: Given recent discussions in the literature and across the Academy about curricular overload and calls for tools that aid in reducing content, it is important to determine what tools and resources programs are using to evaluate curricular content and how these resources are used to inform curricular change. Thus, the objective of this research project is to describe tools and resources pharmacy programs use for curricular content and change., Methods: A 17-item instrument was created, pilot-tested, and then distributed electronically to assessment leads at accredited pharmacy programs with multiple reminders to improve response rates. The instrument covered various tools for pharmacotherapy, foundational sciences, social and administrative sciences (SAS), and top 200/300 medications. Respondents provided information related to the study objectives, and data were analyzed descriptively., Results: With a 51% response rate, programs commonly used, and rated most helpful, the American College of Clinical Pharmacy (ACCP) Pharmacotherapy Didactic Curriculum Toolkit to inform curricular prioritization. Programs indicated they did not have comparable resources commonly used for determining curricular content related to foundational sciences, SAS, and top 200/300 medications., Conclusions: Established tools, such as the ACCP Pharmacotherapy Didactic Curriculum Toolkit, are helpful in selecting curricular topics, but additional guidance is needed to optimize its usefulness in managing curricular overload. There are unique challenges associated with the evaluation of faculty in pharmacy departments or divisions that have a mix of nontenure-track and tenure-track faculty members. Such evaluations are intended to provide feedback on performance and personal growth but have the potential to demotivate faculty and add to existing stress if improperly performed. The purpose of this commentary is to suggest best practices for department chairs involved in performing evaluations of faculty in pharmacy departments or divisions that have a mix of nontenure-track and tenure-track faculty members. The paper is intended to help ensure these evaluations not only capture the quality and quantity of each faculty member's full range of activities and responsibilities but also are conducted in a supportive and constructive fashion. Rural populations are steadily growing, yet residents in these areas face significant disparities in health care access compared with their urban counterparts. This commentary examines the role of pharmacy education in addressing the challenges of rural pharmacy practice. With a focus on strategies outlined by the World Health Organization, the authors explore interventions such as admitting students from rural backgrounds, establishing health professional schools outside major cities, and providing clinical rotations in rural areas. Drawing on examples from Australia, Canada, the United States, and New Zealand, the authors highlight various approaches taken to bridge the rural pharmacy education gap. These include adapting admission criteria for pharmacy schools, integrating rural content into curricula, and offering rural-focused rotations and certificate programs. In addition, the authors discuss the importance of addressing student perceptions of rural practice, which often include concerns about social isolation, limited collaboration opportunities, and lifestyle factors. Looking ahead, the authors suggest future directions for pharmacy education, emphasizing the need to prioritize rural health issues in curricula, increase opportunities for rural placements, and engage pharmacists from rural backgrounds in teaching roles. Objectives: Digital literacy is increasingly crucial in pharmacy practice, and relevant education and training are required to prepare the future workforce. This study aims to explore the current and planned inclusion of digital literacy education in the undergraduate curricula of UK pharmacy schools., Methods: A mixed-methods approach was conducted with two phases. The first involved a content analysis of published curricula from all 30 UK pharmacy schools. The second phase included a survey based on the Health Education England Digital Capabilities Framework, distributed to academic staff across all pharmacy schools., Key Findings: Data from 14 pharmacy schools' curricula were included in the analysis, with 10 reporting digital literacy education. Key themes identified from the analysed documents included understanding of health informatics, applied informatics, information technology skills, and the emerging digital health technology. Nineteen respondents from 16 schools participated in the survey; digital literacy inclusion was reported by 18 participants. There was variable alignment of digital literacy competencies with the Health Education England framework. Digital literacy was mainly integrated into existing teaching sessions, predominantly through self-learning (n = 12). Electronic Health Records and remote counselling were the main focus areas within the curricula. Challenges in implementing digital literacy include a lack of expertise (n = 13), and time constraints (n = 10)., Conclusions: The trend towards embedding digital literacy in UK pharmacy curricula is clear, but disparities suggest the need for a more unified strategy. Prefixes and suffixes in pharmacy might suggest a drug class, generation, or mechanism of action. As pharmacy educators, we also use an alphabet soup of acronyms and abbreviations to describe board certifications or professional organizations and our affiliation to them. Although we may be experts in nomenclature and abbreviations related to health professions education, sometimes, we also have to remind ourselves to be humble and embrace a learning mindset relative to the abbreviations and naming conventions used more broadly in higher education and in other fields. This article discusses the use of abbreviations in minority-serving institutions as well as the financial, historical, and political implications surrounding their names and definitions. The need to appreciate institutional designations and what they represent is not unique to minority-serving institutions or solely the responsibility of personnel who lead diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility efforts. Objective: To describe the development of an innovative prepharmacy underrepresented mentorship program (PUMP) to provide guidance and support to prepharmacy students who are committed to serving underrepresented communities with health disparities., Methods: Three virtual PUMP workshops were designed and delivered per admissions cycle for prepharmacy students who were applying to any school of pharmacy and self-identified as interested in serving underrepresented communities. Faculty, current pharmacy students, staff, and school leadership provided guidance and support on the application and interview process and how to select a program once offered admission. Data collection included the number of students who attended each workshop and were accepted to and matriculated at the school of pharmacy. Preworkshop and postworkshop surveys provided insight into communities that attendees were committed to serving, perceptions of the workshops, and intent to matriculate, if accepted., Results: During the first three admissions cycles, 189 prepharmacy students participated in 8 PUMP workshops. A favorable trend was observed with an increased number of participants annually and an increased number of attendees who matriculated (an average of 34% over 3 cycles). Attendees were committed to addressing health disparities in various communities including but not limited to Southeast Asian; Latinx; Native American; lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer/questioning, intersex, or asexual; Black/African American; Refugee; and Pacific Islanders. Most attendees (96%) reported that attending PUMP workshop(s) positively changed their impression of the school., Conclusion: A pilot prepharmacy mentorship program was developed and implemented. Community pharmacy is currently experiencing significant changes that will likely transform practice in unpredictable ways. With student interest in pursuing community pharmacy practice postgraduation on the decline, the Academy needs to ensure that a sufficient number of students passionate in community practice enter the workforce to guide this transformation in a positive manner for the profession and patients. This commentary reviews the ways that pharmacy faculty may promote community pharmacy during the students' academic experiences. Objective: To provide schools and colleges of pharmacy a snapshot of Introductory Pharmacy Practice Experience (IPPE) program characteristics to generate and share ideas for IPPE program modifications to improve student learning outcomes and comply with Standards 2025., Methods: A 41-item electronic survey was distributed to 140 Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education fully accredited schools and colleges of pharmacy in 2023. IPPE program characteristics such as structure, learning activities, assessments, and requirements were described., Results: Eighty-seven programs participated in the survey (62.1% response rate). Notable findings included 64.4% of programs starting IPPEs during the first professional year, 78.6% did not count simulation hours toward Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education hour requirements, 24.1% incorporated patient care electives, over 90% incorporated various patient care activities, 40.2% exceeded a 2:1 student-to-preceptor ratio, 15.7% incorporated layered learning, 50.0% incorporated interprofessional education, 57.5% used summative assessment rubrics based on Entrustable Professional Activities, and 77.0% used pass/fail grading., Conclusion: Owing to evolving accreditation standards, the study provided valuable information about the current state of IPPEs. Over the past 2 decades, the Academy has witnessed an increase in new colleges and schools of pharmacy and, simultaneously, a decrease in student applications, resulting in a decline in enrollment across most institutions. Although the number of students pursuing a Doctor of Pharmacy degree has been dropping, the Academy is responsible for bolstering recruitment to effectively prepare a robust pharmacy workforce to care for our ever-growing and complex patient populations. The 2023-2024 Student Affairs Committee (SAC) was convened to explore new ideas, develop innovative strategies, and gather supportive resources that can be utilized by colleges and schools of pharmacy to attract students to the pharmacy profession. The SAC was charged with developing a framework for a video mini-series that utilizes the art of storytelling to promote the pharmacy profession to prospective students. Secondarily, the SAC was charged with developing a plan to engage with students who apply but do not ultimately get accepted into nonpharmacy health professions programs and consider recommendations for targeting pharmacy technicians to pursue a PharmD degree. To accomplish this work, we created videos and proposed other innovative tools and flexible pathways to assist in recruiting students into the pharmacy profession. We also conducted a literature and website review, engaged in professional networking across the Academy, and proposed best practices to enhance student recruitment. The 2023-2024 American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy Research and Graduate Affairs Committee ("the Committee") was charged with developing programs focused on career and professional development for researchers, new faculty, and graduate students in colleges and schools of pharmacy. After reviewing exiting resources available to pharmacy faculty for grant writing, the Committee recognized a need for more comprehensive, diverse, and tailored resources for pharmacy faculty. The Committee, therefore, focused its effort on creating an intensive grant writing course intended for independent pharmacy researchers without previous major grant awards that would support writing for career development and research grant applications and cater to faculty in translational, clinical sciences, and pharmacy practice, along with fellows and residents. Objective: Professional pharmacy fraternal organizations are among the most common student organizations in schools and colleges of pharmacy and are present on 98% of campuses. However, sparse literature explores the educational value these organizations offer. The purpose of this review is to explore the alignment of national requirements of 2 major pharmacy fraternities with cocurricular learning objectives., Methods: All 4 fraternal pharmacy organizations recognized by the Professional Fraternal Association were invited to collaborate on this project. Ultimately, 2 fraternities participated by gathering national office requirements for reports and activities for collegiate chapters. Qualitative review of fraternity requirements was conducted via manifest content analysis by 2 independent reviewers, and items were coded to the relevant cocurricular domain(s) from the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education Standards 2016; disagreements were resolved by a third author., Results: A total of 50 fraternity requirements were identified and mapped to 1 or more cocurricular domains, for a total of 63 codings. All 6 cocurricular domains were coded at least once. The most common codings were professionalism and leadership. Significant overlap existed in requirements that encompassed professionalism plus cultural sensitivity, professionalism plus self-awareness, and self-awareness plus leadership. Some activities benefited the school or community, whereas others solely contributed to individual member professional development., Conclusion: Professional pharmacy fraternities provide ample cocurricular learning opportunities among the breadth of affective domains. Objective: The objective is to describe the impact of a curricular revision process using the 8-step Kotter change model to decrease curricular overload in a Doctor of Pharmacy program at a public, research-intensive school of pharmacy., Methods: In alignment with the 8-step Kotter change model, the first step was to create urgency for change, which was supported by calls to action to address curricular overload. Next, a coalition of change leaders was formed, who developed 7 curriculum renewal targets to collectively address curricular overload. This vision was communicated at faculty meetings throughout the change process, with requests for feedback. Five curricular working groups were formed to empower action based on their charges. Quick wins were created by early adopters, which built momentum and led to a more streamlined course change process. Lastly, making changes stick requires ongoing evaluation., Results: In total, required didactic credits were reduced from 92.6 to 79 and didactic courses were reduced from 31 to 23 while ensuring that all required content remained. For many courses, contact hours were also reduced to align with allotted credit hours. Obstacles and challenges were encountered along the way, and a collaborative approach to finding solutions proved beneficial., Conclusion: The key recommendations for implementing curricular changes to address overload include having a change model in place and identifying change leaders to support change and address faculty concerns efficiently. Purpose: Ensuring pharmacy technicians are adequately trained and prepared to enter the workforce is an important first step in addressing technician staff shortages. How pharmacy technician learners perceive their experiences after completion of a training program remains unknown. This study evaluated participant outcomes and self-efficacy ratings for common technician competencies after completion of a pharmacy technician training program., Methods: Between December 2021 and March 2023, we distributed a survey to participants who successfully completed the program approximately 3 months after their estimated completion date. The survey assessed 6 domains: enrollment and academic progression, utilization of educational resources, self-perceived proficiency on core competencies of a pharmacy technician, employment information, program recommendations, and student demographics., Results: Thirty-six participants completed the survey, corresponding to a 60% response rate. Participants were attracted to the pharmacy technician program due to its affiliation with a college of pharmacy, online format, and affordability. Half of respondents were actively employed as pharmacy technicians, and the self-reported certification exam passage rate slightly exceeded national averages (78% vs 70% to 71%). Participants' self-efficacy ratings for pharmacy technician competencies were high (mean rating of 4.12 out of 5). Overwhelmingly, 97% of participants agreed that the program prepared them well for becoming a pharmacy technician., Conclusion: A pharmacy technician training program housed within a college of pharmacy presents one potential solution in addressing pharmacy technician workforce shortages. Background: The Viral Hepatitis National Strategic Plan emphasizes the importance of a collaborative provider workforce trained in hepatitis prevention and treatment to eliminate viral hepatitis in the United States by 2030. Although pharmacists play a key role in hepatitis management, literature lacks documentation of the amount of viral hepatitis education provided to pharmacy students., Aim: Our study goal was to describe viral hepatitis education provided at United States pharmacy schools., Method: In this cross-sectional survey study, investigators developed a 19-item Qualtrics questionnaire, sent questionnaire links to curricula content experts at 140 accredited pharmacy colleges/schools in May-June 2022, and allotted 28 days for completion. Questions assessed the viral hepatitis instruction provided to students and hepatitis instructors' training/experience. We used descriptive statistics for analysis., Results: Forty-eight pharmacy institutions across 29 states/territories responded; 44% had 50-99 students/class, and 58% used lecture and discussion to provide required hepatitis education. Students received more lecture (average = 3.4 h, range 0.8-1.6 h/hepatitis topic) than discussion (average = 1.7 h, range 0.6-0.9 h/hepatitis topic), with the most time spent on hepatitis C, followed by hepatitis B virus. Respondents reported 93% of their instructors had post-graduate training/certifications and 67% worked in clinical settings with hepatitis patients., Conclusion: Survey results demonstrate variability in hepatitis education across United States pharmacy curricula. The notion of consumerism and that students are customers of pharmacy colleges was explored by proponents and opponents of the idea. First, a working definition of a "customer" in pharmacy education is pondered with respect to the roles and responsibilities of students and schools/colleges of pharmacy. Second, the pros and cons of "student-centered" education are considered in the light of students and their families being consumers of the educational experience. Third, the duality of student-centered education is discussed including student engagement/disengagement in their learning, professional/unprofessional behaviors, and shared/individual responsibilities. Objective: To determine adjunct pharmacist preceptor perceptions of their precepting role related to three domains: motivation to precept, understanding the precepting role, and support for precepting., Methods: An online cross-sectional survey of 2429 adjunct preceptors for four schools of pharmacy was conducted. Participants ranked their agreement with 81 statements regarding the three domains, including eleven subdomains., Results: Mean scores for the three domains were slightly below the positive response level, with lower scores found for the subdomains of workload, precepting norms, and extrinsic benefits/rewards. Individual statements indicated increased workload due to precepting, need for more preceptor recognition and appreciation, perceptions that precepting was stressful or draining, and a preference for one concurrent learner. More frequent need for extra coaching for APPE students negatively impacted all domains, including nine subdomains., Conclusion: This study provides a formal evaluation of adjunct preceptor perceptions of their precepting role. Compared to previous studies, these results may indicate lower satisfaction with precepting, suggesting opportunities exist to improve the adjunct precepting experience. Ghosting, professionally and personally, occurs when there is an abrupt end to communication between 2 individuals without any explanation or when an individual does not follow through on commitments to others associated with their communication. The increase in the available communication channels and speed at which messages can now be transmitted between individuals is resulting in a greater incidence of ghosting or perceived ghosting in our colleges/schools of pharmacy. The impact of ghosting is the disruption of effective communication and communication strategies that are essential to the development of positive and thriving cultures and subcultures in our institutions. The causes of ghosting (real or perceived) in our pharmacy academy could be attributed to increased workload and speed of communication, increased workload and productivity expectations, and increased workload and information volume. The consequences of ghosting in our colleges/schools can result in decreased psychological safety in our cultures, adversely impacting individual well-being, resiliency, grit, and satisfaction and adversely impacting student academic performance and success. Academic Entitlement (AE) is the expectation by students to receive high grades or preferential treatment without significant effort. Exploring AE from faculty perspective has not been investigated in Arab colleges of pharmacy. The aim of this study was to explore experiences and perceptions towards student AE among pharmacy faculty in the Arab World. A cross-sectional, self-administered, anonymous, electronic survey was sent to pharmacy faculty across pharmacy colleges in Arab countries. The survey collected demographic data, an AE measure including 17 items reflecting seven AE components, and faculty perceptions and perceived reasons for AE. A total of 345 responses were collected. The AE level was moderate (46.05 ±7.29), and the highest scores among its components were for customer service expectation (62%) and responsibility avoidance (59%). In multiple linear regression, AE showed positive significant association with faculty in clinical pharmacy departments and those having fewer years of experience. Most common complaints heard by faculty from students were requests to turn in assignments late (90%), while the most common communication issues faculty faced with students were unprofessional verbal communication (58%) and unprofessional messages on social media (57%). Poor admission criteria (40%) and existence of multiple private colleges of pharmacy (37%) were the most common perceived reasons for AE by participating faculty. This study reveals moderate AE experienced by pharmacy faculty in the Arab World, as well as common complaints, communication issues, and AE reasons. Background: Clinical pharmacogenomics is an expanding area in healthcare that relies heavily on pharmacists for advocacy and implementation. To support pharmacists' significant roles in clinical pharmacogenomics, pharmacy schools and colleges in the United States (US) have strived to incorporate pharmacogenomics education into their curricula, and various teaching strategies have been employed in recent years to meet pharmacogenomics educational outcomes. The six major strategies reported in the literature are described and compared in this review, which culminates in a proposed longitudinal curriculum design for pharmacogenomics education., Methods: Publications focused on pharmacogenomics education to pharmacy students within the US in the past decade were evaluated and summarized., Results: The major education strategies that have been studied are didactic lecture, personal genotyping or personal genomic testing, simulation laboratory activity, interprofessional education, practice-based activity such as clinical rotation, and combinational courses. Objective: One of the final tasks for pharmacy graduates to enter practice is passing the North American Pharmacist Licensure Examination (NAPLEX). Given the recent national declines in pass rates, programs are making significant investments of time and money in NAPLEX preparation. The objective is to characterize the structure and content of required NAPLEX preparation courses., Methods: A survey on NAPLEX preparation practices was developed and distributed to all Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education-accredited pharmacy schools. NAPLEX preparation course syllabi were also collected as part of this survey. Syllabus information was summarized into 4 elements: course structure, content, resources, and assessment strategies., Results: Of 144 colleges/schools of pharmacy, 100 responded to the survey, 87 reported having a NAPLEX preparation program, and 47 reported having a NAPLEX preparation course. Twenty syllabi were collected. Most courses (14) were longitudinal through the Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experiences year, 16 were credit-bearing, and 19 included a vendor NAPLEX preparatory product. Fourteen courses were hybrid delivery, and 12 focused on licensure preparation and included test-taking strategies, calculations practice, case-based discussions, etc. All 20 courses reported using unproctored timed quizzes and practice examinations, half conducted proctored timed assessments, and 11 included written reflections and/or continuous professional development activities. Most courses were pass/fail (15), and high stakes (16) were defined by delayed or withheld graduation as a consequence for failure. Only 3 of 20 NAPLEX preparation courses were mapped to NAPLEX competencies., Conclusion: Although required NAPLEX preparation courses focus on assessments, the content is infrequently mapped to NAPLEX competencies. Objective: The purpose of this study was to characterize and classify significant events of pharmacy students who completed an early practice experience. Methods: Significant event analyses (SEAs) were reflections submitted by students about events that they found impactful during their early practice experiences. An online repository has stored 287 SEAs submitted by first year pharmacy students for later use in a pharmacy course. For this study, all significant events were read and coded according to the pre-specified themes and tones (positive, negative, neutral, hybrids) of the event. Themes used were derived from prior literature characterizing major themes from other health professional students' experiences. Additional themes were added by authors for those that did not fit into the pre-set categories. All themes of the narratives were subsequently categorized. To assure confirmability, the investigators conferred to discuss new themes that emerged and events that were ambiguous. To assure credibility, an external audit of a sample of the coded SEAs was completed. Upon reaching consensus between primary reviewer and secondary reviewers, data were reported as frequencies and percentages. This study received ethics clearance from the Office of the University Registrar and was deemed exempt by the University Institutional Review Board. Results: A total of 1,055 coded responses were analyzed. The majority of SEAs were positive in tone (n=190, 66.2%) and many were hybrids of negative-turned-positive emotions (n=62, 21.6%). The most common major content theme was "patients and the provision of patient care" (n=412, 39.1%), followed by "pharmacy students and their behavior" (n=260, 24.6%). The most prevalent subthemes were "learning by doing" (n=134, 12.7%) and "feelings of usefulness or uselessness" (n=111, 10.5%). Conclusions: The majority of students framed significant events in their pharmacy practice experiences in a positive light, even from challenging interactions. The events that resonated most frequently with these students centered around patient interactions and providing patient care. These results will be useful for pharmacy educators developing pharmacy school curriculums to better prepare students to excel and feel more comfortable in direct patient care experiences. Objective: This work's objective was to demonstrate acceptable reliability and consistency within and across each domain of the survey tool., Methods: A survey with 16 questions was distributed to faculty from the AACP membership list and contained 4 domains: DEIA. The survey responses were analyzed using factor analysis and reliability analysis., Results: A total of 877 subjects' responses met inclusion criteria and were used in the analysis. The results demonstrated that the survey had high reliability and discriminating validity within each domain and overall as a scale., Conclusion: The finalized tool provides a practical, standardized measure to evaluate faculty perceptions of DEIA efforts in institutions of pharmacy education. This tool can help identify areas of improvement and guide the advancement of DEIA initiatives in colleges of pharmacy. Further research is needed to validate the survey in other populations. Objective: The objective of this review is to provide the conclusions from the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP) Council of Deans (COD) Taskforce on Research and Scholarship., Findings: The charges and the findings of the committee are: (1) Define the scholarship needs/opportunities to strengthen the outputs. The committee recommends that AACP update its definitions of research/scholarship to include discovery, integration, application/practice, and teaching/learning. A deployed survey demonstrated a high Special Interest Groups research/scholarship interest. (2) Assemble a toolkit of grant and scholarship resources to assist colleges/schools. The AACP should update the existing funding opportunity listing and combine it with additional resources. (3) Create a framework for effective research collaboration and mentorship. The AACP should identify key areas of pharmacy research and experts to serve as mentors and to meet with external stakeholders. (4) and (5) Consider the need for and purpose of a COD standing committee for research and scholarship. Explore the value of a formal research dean's subcommittee. It was recommended that AACP form a research/scholarship committee or Special Interest Groups and create the Pharmacy Scholarship, Research, and Graduate Education pre-meeting to the Interim Meeting. Objective: The purpose of this research is to address knowledge gaps on diversity in the United States (US) population, pharmacy students, faculty, and school/college leadership., Method: The population data were collected from the US Census Bureau. The pharmacy student and faculty data were collected from the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy enrollment and faculty profiles to compute Diversity Indices (DIs). To delve further into observed DI values, different ratios were calculated by dividing the total number of people in a racial/ethnic group of a particular category (eg, students) by the total number of people in the same racial/ethnic group in a different category (eg, faculty). Two factors (ratios among racial groups and changes in ratios over time) ANOVA without replication was conducted using Excel., Results: The students are the most diverse category (average DI = 69%), followed by the US population (average DI = 58%), faculty diversity (average DI = 54%), assistant/associate dean (average DI = 42%) and dean (average DI = 31%). The ratio analyses among student, faculty, and leadership categories reveal a disproportionately high representation of White individuals in faculty and leadership roles when compared to other racial groups, resulting in low DI values in these categories., Conclusion: A significant ratio difference was found among various racial groups each year. However, there was no significant change observed in ratios over time. Background: Interprofessional education can prepare the workforce for collaborative practice in complex health and social care systems., Aim: To examine the nature and extent of interprofessional education in schools of pharmacy in the United Kingdom., Method: An online questionnaire was developed using systems theory, published literature and input from an interprofessional expert panel; it included closed and open-ended questions and a demographic section. Following piloting, it was distributed to 31 schools of pharmacy. Descriptive statistics were used for quantitative data, and a content analysis approach for qualitative data., Results: Ten schools of pharmacy responded. All reported delivering compulsory interprofessional education. Most (80%) reported an interprofessional steering group overseeing development. Formative and/or summative assessment varied depending on year of study. Mechanism and purpose of evaluation varied with respondents reporting Kirkpatrick Evaluation Model Levels 1-3 (100%; 80%; 70%). Two themes were identified: "Variation in Interprofessional Education Approaches and Opportunities" and "Factors Influencing Development and Implementation of Interprofessional Education". Formal teaching was mainly integrated into other modules; various pedagogic approaches and topics were used for campus-based activities. Respondents referred to planned interprofessional education during practice-based placements; some still at pilot stage. Overall, respondents agreed that practice-based placements offered opportunistic interprofessional education, but a more focused approach is needed to maximise student pharmacists' learning potential., Conclusion: Most interprofessional education offered in undergraduate pharmacy curricula in the United Kingdom is campus-based; the nature and extent of which varies between programmes. The pharmacy and physician assistant dual degree is one of the newest programs offered and has been predicted to have a high likelihood of growth in the future. With only an additional year of education, the PharmD-PA dual degree holder will have prescriptive authority upon graduation to expand their clinical roles. Additionally, by combining both medical and pharmacotherapeutics education, these mid-level practitioners could potentially improve healthcare shortages and allow for improvements in patient care. While there are established PharmD-PA dual degree programs, there is low enrollment coupled by rigorous curriculums and financial burdens that students must endure. Despite its limitations, this novel dual degree program offers pharmacy students another method to provide clinical care apart from the post-graduate opportunities. Objectives: The current study assessed how students prepared for the North American Pharmacist Licensure Examination (NAPLEX), and examined factors associated with first-time pass rates. In addition, updated information on student perceptions of several currently available NAPLEX preparation resources was collected., Methods: A survey was administered to 2022 graduates from 1 school, which collected data on student demographics, and NAPLEX-related items regarding when the exam was taken and how students prepared, including resources used. The association between first-time success (pass, no pass) and grade point average (GPA), timing of test date after graduation, effort toward exam, and number of hours studied was examined. In addition, student ratings of NAPLEX preparation resources in terms of usefulness, representativeness to actual examination, and monetary value were reported., Results: A total of 52 individuals completed the survey. Pharmacy GPA over 3.5, taking the NAPLEX within 60 days of graduation, and exerting moderate to extensive effort to pass the NAPLEX were all associated with higher first-time pass rates. All students reported using at least 1 RxPrep resource, which students rated highly and suggested the school provide as a resource for NAPLEX preparation., Conclusion: This study found that taking the NAPLEX examination within 60 days of graduation, contributing moderate to extensive effort to pass the examination, as well as a cumulative GPA of 3.5 (out of 4) or above were related to success on the NAPLEX. Objective: This study aimed to describe the purpose, implementation, and perceived utility of course evaluations in pharmacy programs., Methods: After a literature review, a 34-item survey was developed, pretested, and sent to assessment administrators at accredited pharmacy programs (N = 139) with at least 3 follow-ups. Descriptive and inferential statistics were performed in IBM SPSS Statistics software., Results: A total of 90 programs responded (64.7% response rate). Most students (94%) were offered the opportunity to complete course evaluations. Some students completed evaluations during the course (47%), while others did so within 1 week of completion of the course (49%). Whether or not class time was given for students to complete the survey was often dependent on faculty choice (52.2%). Results were typically released after final grades were posted (92%), in time to use for the next semester of teaching (77%). Faculty were chosen to be evaluated by the number of teaching hours (50%) followed by all instructors (45.6%). Programs used the results for performance reviews by chairs (91%), course coordinator reviews (84%), and committee continuous quality improvement efforts (72%). Most programs did not provide faculty guidance on using evaluations (78%) nor development/mentoring (57%); only 22% of programs offered student development in completing evaluations., Conclusion: While most programs invite feedback from all students via evaluations, most did not provide guidance to faculty on how to use this feedback for faculty or course development purposes. Creating a welcoming and supportive environment for learners with disabilities needs to be a focus within pharmacy education. Including students with disabilities enhances program diversity and contributes to awareness and understanding of disability. Barriers to embracing disability include stigma toward disability, insufficient resource allocation, and misunderstanding of accommodations. Steps that need to be taken to embrace disability include evaluation of current programmatic culture, provision of education, and collaboration with external stakeholders. Objective: Policies related to prepromotion/tenure reviews and postpromotion/tenure reviews are critical to faculty advancement and retention. The objective of this study is to describe the utilization, timing, and application of such policies as described within promotion and/or tenure documents from US colleges/schools of pharmacy., Methods: PT documents were collected from internet searches and/or contact with administrators at each institution. Qualitative content analysis was used to systematically review policies related to pre and postpromotion/tenure reviews. Policies were reviewed for required vs optional status, timing, possible outcomes, and other characteristics., Results: PT documents were analyzed from 121 (85%) colleges/schools. Of these, 26% included policies for prepromotion review of nontenure-track faculty, while 45% included pretenure reviews for tenure-track faculty. The majority of prereviews were required (65% and 91%, respectively) and conducted after 3 years in rank on average. Only 22 (18%) included postpromotion/tenure reviews, with most (17, 77%) conducting reviews after a prespecified time in advanced rank (mean 3.9 years). Potential negative consequences of postpromotion/tenure reviews were more frequently described than potential rewards., Conclusion: This analysis of promotion and/or tenure documents revealed that pre/posttenure reviews were more commonly employed than pre/postpromotion reviews. Objective: This study aimed to describe trends in social vulnerability (SV) among pharmacy students at a large public college of pharmacy, and to describe differences in SV by race and ethnicity using the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Social Vulnerability Index (SVI)., Methods: The SVI was determined for each student admitted between Fall 2017 and Fall 2022 using the submitted permanent address for each student in a deidentified fashion. International students and students not from the 50 US states were excluded from the analysis., Results: During the study period, 1427 pharmacy students met the study inclusion criteria and were included in the final analysis. Students from historically minoritized populations accounted for 53.4% (n = 763/1427) of students. The median SVI score for all students was 0.4091 (interquartile range [IQR]: 0.2091-0.6395), which is consistent with low/moderate SV risk. When considering SVI by race, students from historically minoritized populations had a higher median SVI (0.4807 [IQR: 0.2791-0.7071] vs 0.3562 [IQR: 0.1561-0.5523]), and were more likely to come from moderate/high SV regions compared with White students (odds ratio 2.00 [95% confidence interval: 1.609-2.486])., Conclusion: Among pharmacy students at a large public university, a substantial proportion of students had moderate/high SV risk, particularly those from historically minoritized backgrounds. Objective: Pharmacy colleges and schools invest substantial faculty effort and financial resources in North America Pharmacist Licensure Exam (NAPLEX) preparation, including vendor products purported to improve NAPLEX pass rates. The objective of this project was to examine NAPLEX preparation program characteristics associated with first-time pass rates., Methods: A national survey investigated which pharmacy schools provided a formal NAPLEX preparation program in the 2021/2022 academic year, and what resources students were required to use. Pharmacy school characteristics and the unique resources provided in NAPLEX preparation programs were separately analyzed for association with 2022 NAPLEX first-time pass rates., Results: The survey response rate was 71% (100 pharmacy schools). Of the 6 pharmacy school characteristics analyzed, offering a formal NAPLEX preparation program and private status were both weakly correlated with a decrease in the 2022 NAPLEX pass rate, while founding year of 2000 or earlier was weakly correlated with an increase in the pass rate. In a generalized linear model, a decrease in 2022 NAPLEX pass rate was associated with offering a formal NAPLEX preparation program (-5.90% [-11.55 to -0.23]) and with a 3-year accelerated curriculum (-9.15% [-15.55 to -2.75]). Of 12 resources required in NAPLEX preparation programs, 3 were weakly correlated with a decrease in 2022 pass rate: a vendor question bank, vendor review book/materials, and a live, synchronous faculty-led review. In a generalized linear model, a decrease in 2022 NAPLEX pass rate was associated with a live, synchronous faculty-led review (-6.62% [-11.16 to -2.08]). Among schools without a formal preparation program, NAPLEX pass rates consistently exceeded the national average in 2020, 2021, and 2022, while the proportion of schools with NAPLEX preparation programs and first-time pass rates above the national average dropped from 59% in 2021 and 58% in 2020 to 44% in 2022., Conclusion: Simply implementing a NAPLEX preparation program is insufficient to overcome other systemic/programmatic influences of successfully passing the NAPLEX; programs should invest earlier resources to address NAPLEX competencies., Competing Interests: Declaration of Competing Interest The authors declare that they have no known competing financial interests or personal relationships that could have appeared to influence the work reported in this paper., (Copyright © 2023. This review focuses on the studies and opinions around issues of transition from the BPharm to the PharmD degree in the U.S., Japan, South Korea, Pakistan and Thailand. The transition to the clinically orientated PharmD degree in many countries was seen to be a means of developing the profession. However, some countries have both clinically-oriented and pharmaceutical sciences-oriented PharmD programme that are designed to meet the needs of their countries. Each country created a different process to handle the transition to an all-PharmD programme, but mostly had the process of school accreditation mandated by the regulatory bodies. The main barrier to the transition in most of the countries was the issue of educational quality. A set of indicators is needed to measure and monitor the impact/outcome of the PharmD degree. Each country has different needs due to the different contexts of health care systems and the scope of pharmacy practice. In order to increase their chances of benefiting from the new programme, academic leaders should critically assess their countries' needs before deciding to adopt a PharmD programme. Objective: Determine the impact of prematriculation course withdrawals on first year pharmacy school (P1) success, defined as on-time progression to the second (P2) year without remediation., Methods: A retrospective review of students matriculating to a four-year private institution from 2018 to 2021 was conducted. Potential predictors of P1 year success including age, sex, highest degree achieved, prematriculation grade point average (GPA), and course withdrawals were collected., Results: Bivariate analysis indicates that age, cumulative GPA, science GPA, and prematriculation course withdrawals were significantly different between students who were successful vs unsuccessful in the first year of pharmacy school. Out of 220 students analyzed, 40.9% (n = 90) were unsuccessful in the first year. Of those 90 P1 students, 52% did not progress to the P2 year, and 48% progressed but required course remediation. Multivariate analysis demonstrated that independent predictors of P1 success included cumulative GPA and having less than two prematriculation course withdrawals. In addition, the number of prematriculation course withdrawals, cumulative GPA, and having a bachelor's degree or higher were independent predictors of P1 GPA., Conclusion: Prematriculation course withdrawal was an independent predictor of both P1 success and P1 GPA. Students with less than two prematriculation course withdrawals were more likely to be successful during the first year of pharmacy school. Evaluation of clinical faculty involves an assessment of the quality of their publications in addition to quantity (number) of publications. In contrast to assessing quantity, assessing quality is difficult. The purpose of this paper is to discuss practical considerations and provide recommendations related to quality of publications that clinical faculty members should bear in mind as part of their overall scholarship activity. College and schools of pharmacy may not provide written criteria for assessing quality of publications, so it is important that clinical faculty members seek guidance from their department chair or direct supervisor, experienced colleagues, and formal or informal mentors or advisers. One criterion for assessing quality is whether a publication was evaluated through a peer-review process although there are other considerations including dissemination of the paper via search engines such as PubMed. Faculty retention is an issue of concern to schools and colleges of pharmacy. The reasons why faculty leave are multifactorial but often involve a breach of unwritten contract obligations between the faculty member and the organization. This article provides strategies for retaining faculty based on published literature that include perceived breaches of unwritten contracts and our own perspectives as departmental and university administrators and senior faculty members who have been involved in devising and implementing institutional change. Retention begins with recruitment but then needs to be nurtured during onboarding and as part of the overall enculturation process for new faculty members.
