Objective: To determine the prevalence and pattern of malnutrition among adolescents in senior secondary schools in The Abuja Municipal area council Methods: Study design: this is a cross-sectional study conducted among adolescents (10-19 years) in secondary schools. A multistage sampling technique was employed to select a total of 1700 students from classes in selected schools. All schools in the Abuja Municipal Area council (AMAC) were stratified into urban and rural schools. Eight schools were selected by balloting from a list of schools obtained from the Education centre. A school was selected from each of the four major districts of AMAC and four schools were selected from the rural making a total of 8 schools. Although the consent of the school authorities was obtained, individual subject also consented to the study before being enrolled. The study excluded those adolescents who were physically challenged thus limiting physical activity. Information was obtained via the use of questionnaires that were administered by rained personnel. Subject’s height and weight was taken using the floor-type height (H) and weight (W) measuring scale model ZT-120 using Massachusetts department of public health protocol. The nutritional status was determined using the formula: BMI= W/H2 , where W =weight (in kilograms) and H= height (in meters). The age and sex specific height and BMI percentile for each subject was determined using the 2007 WHO Height and BMI growth charts for age 5-19years. The students were then classified into one of the following categories using previously used standards: normal, stunted, wasted, overweight or obese. Data was analyzed using SPSS version 17 statistical package. Results: The mean age was 14.43±1.94 years; male 688, female 862, M:F ratio 1.1.3. Mean BMI, weight and height were 20.31±3.07kg/m2, 51.07± 10.80 kg, and 157.88±9.33 cm. The prevalence of wasting, stunting, overweight and obesity was documented as 1.7% (27/1550), 11.3% (175/1550), 13.2% (205/1550), and 2.6% (41/1550) respectively. Those in urban schools had higher mean BMI (20.91±3.22 kg/m2 versus 19.71±2.78 kg/m2) and height (160.41±9.14 cm versus 155.32±8.81 cm) and p values

Radon is a radioactive noble gas, recognized as a carcinogenic agent, being affected by degree of ventilation. The aim of this preliminary study was to determine the concentration of indoor radon gas in schools, to estimate the main factors affecting their radon concentration levels and to analyze the effective dose received by students in Duhok schools. Therefore, the concentrations of radon were measured in 28 classrooms, from 13 schools located in Duhok city, using both RAD7 and Corentium monitor, from January 15-30, 2021. In all schools indoor radon was measured in four different scenarios of closed, natural and mechanical ventilation then, radon reduction rate between each case was calculated. In addition to that, exposure to annual effective dose of radon, for each different degree of ventilation, was evaluated. Furthermore, effects of building floors were studied. Results showed that maximum radon concentration, 121 Bqm-3, was recorded in closed ventilation, while minimum, 15 Bqm-3, was recorded in mechanical ventilation. Radon reduction rate in a mechanical ventilation is relatively large 81%. Also, results demonstrate that indoor radon levels at first floor, in all schools under study, were considerably greater than those at second and third floor (p < 0.05). The annual effective dose of all studied schools at 4 different cases of ventilation were found less than the worldwide average radiation dose of 3-10 mSv. So, it is not required to take any action to minimize the level of radon in schools under study.

The purpose of the article is to analyze the evolution of the school population in the Apuseni Mountains in the range 1992-2017. For the implementation of the article we needed statistical data that we took over from the National Institute of Statistics. After they were obtained, they were processed in Microsoft Excel, and then the database was built that was introduced in the ARC Gis 10.3 program. After entering data in geographic information systems, a number of maps were generated on the herd, decreases and population increases during the period mentioned. The school population has been and is influenced by the migratory dynamics of the population. As the young population leaves and does not come back, it remains the elderly population that can no longer reproduce. The few administrative units in which the school population grew was due to the positive evolution of ethnicities.

The paper presents the results of a survey conducted in the high schools of Calarasi county. The purpose is to estimate the education option of the future graduates. The survey was conducted on a stratified sample, of 630 future graduates of 7 high schools in Călărasi county. In order to inform closer to reality, the design of the questionnaire sought to identify options for the University of Agronomic Sciences and Veterinary Medicine Bucharest, following the evaluation by the pupils, of the group of university education offers. Almost all, of 96.7 % of pupils expressed their intention to continue their studies in the higher education, most of them continuing the tradition of the past years, to direct their options to the economic education, respectively 31%. The school population was divided into five layers, depending on the number of graduates registered in the University of Agronomic Sciences and Veterinary Medicine Bucharest, in the academic year 2014/2015. The demand for the University of Agronomic Sciences and Veterinary Medicine Bucharest represents 27% of the demand for the public education, most of them coming from the high schools with agricultural and economic profile. In order to improve the promotion strategy, along with the options estimation, the investigation aimed also to identify the main reasons for the choice made and to highlight the main sources of information. Analyzing the distribution of reasons, we found out that the first reasons are: good training, existing specializations, internships abroad, providing accommodation.

Education is the main pillar of any society, both worldwide and in Romania. The paper analyzes the evolution of the educational system in the rural areas from the county of Argeş during the crisis period and also after the financial crisis. The study has been based on statistical evidence data and also on the data provided by the Ministry of Regional Development, European Funds and Public Administration. The analysis has been applied on 95 communes, which form rural area in the county of Argeş. In addition to the educational variables, the study also took into account social and economic indicators in order to obtain a greater veracity over the analysis. In the methodological approach the article uses the principal components analysis and the hierarchical ascendant classification analysis, taking into consideration the year of 2010 and the year of 2016. The analysis points to the fact that the villages close to Pitesti stands out, as these are more developed. They are followed closely by the category represented by the villages with an aging population, from where the majority of the young workforce has emigrated. Another category is represented by the villages which have their economy based on the primary sector, and the last category is the one containing the villages with a disadvantaged ethnic population. The study of health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in children and adolescents has important implications in terms of policy, education, and health. Data on the time spent in physical activity (PA) and in sedentary activities in this population are worrying. We aim to analyze possible differences in HRQoL and PA levels between sexes and age groups in Spanish students aged between 8 and 14 years, as well as to assess the relationship between HRQoL and the frequency of PA in this population. A total of 3197 participants (1610 boys and 1587 girls) from 8 to 14 years old were recruited. Mquality and Mapping Child Health Utility instrument (Chu9d) were used as HRQoL indicators. A medium positive association between PA and HRQoL concerning the Spanish school population was found. HRQoL was higher among students aged 8 to 12 than 13 to 14. Moreover, when children start secondary education, both sexes seem to lose the quality of life. Similarly, PA decreases among girls over the years, although it seems to increase among boys. Thus, PA levels and HRQoL are directly associated in Spanish schoolchildren aged between 8 and 14 years. However, this HRQoL decreases in children over the years. Practical implications include the need to support education and physical activity programs to improve HRQoL in children and adolescents.

Abstract: Goals: To know the prevalence of obesity in primary and secondary school students, and to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of anthropometric variables for its detection. Design: Cross-sectional study. Location: Rural area of Córdoba. In the year 2014. Participants: Student population. A stratified sampling was performed according to age, gender and educational centers. A total of 323 students from 6 to 16 years were included in the study, all parents had signed informed consent. Main measurements: The prevalence of obesity was determined and sociodemographic, anthropometric, physical condition and dietary predictor variables were collected. A binary logistic regression was performed determining crude and adjusted Odds Ratio (OR) values, ROC curves were obtained and cut-off values were determined, calculating the sensitivity, specificity and Youden index. Results: The prevalence of overweight and obesity was 26.2% and 22.3%, respectively. Only 15.2% of school children had an optimal Mediterranean diet. The waist-height ratio (WtHR) was the predictive variable with the highest adjusted OR 7.1 (4.3-11.6) and the largest area under the curve 0.954 (0.928-0.979), from a global cut-off value to discriminate obesity of 0.507. This gave a sensitivity of 90% and specificity of 87.2%. Conclusions: The high prevalence of obesity, the low-medium adherence to the Mediterranean diet and the low physical fitness make this population a priority target for the prevention of future cardiovascular events. The WtHR has been the best anthropometric predictor of obesity, recommending its use for the diagnosis of obesity in children at the expense of body mass index. Abstract This paper considers the results obtained from a 2015 study on videogames and academic performance in Middle School students (12-14 years-olds) in four Colombian institutions in the municipality of La Estrella, Antioquia. Research methodology was empirical and analytical as well as descriptive and correlational. It included a sample of 335 students who completed a survey for problematic use of new technologies (NT) garnering the following results: males rather than females play videogames more frequently. There are also certain trends as to the types of videogames played by students that attend public vs private schools. Overall, students tend to play educational games that require mental agility less frequently. Although there was no significant relevance regarding academic performance and videogame usage, there were correlations found in time, space, age and performance. Recommendations are provided for educational institutions in using videogames as part of their educational strategies as well as guidelines for parents on regulating use of NT at home.

- Abstract
Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are considered to be major air pollutants with a strong negative influence on human health. Many of them are toxic with high carcinogenic potential. Children and school staff spend a significant portion of daytime at schools, mostly indoors. Therefore, the hypothesis can be made that air quality significantly impacts their health. A health risk assessment, performed by calculating Incremental lifetime cancer risk (ILCR), was conducted in the framework of this study. Indoor and outdoor PAHs concentrations were measured in typical Serbian primary school. Total suspended particles (TSP) and gas-phase PAHs from the air were collected both inside the school building and in the outside school environment. Average indoor and outdoor PAHs concentrations were used to calculate benzo[a]pyrene equivalent (BaPeq) concentration. A significantly higher BaPeq was observed in the gas-phase than in the TSP, due to a high amount of low molecular PAHs present in the gas-phase. The measured BaPeq concentration values were fitted to the appropriate mathematical distribution and used as an input parameter for stochastic ILCR modeling. Different body weight and inhalation rate distributions were used for sampling during ILCR calculations. The performed sensitivity analysis showed that the two different recommended values of cancer slope factor had a major impact on the ILCR values. Based on this, it was decided to perform simulations using cancer slope factors for individual PAHs. The obtained ILCR values for both children and adults were greater than the allowed level, indicating high potential lung cancer risk. It may be concluded that it is necessary to improve indoor air quality in schools applying measures for lowering TSP PAHs with high carcinogenic potential. © Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2020.

Prednosti nelaboratorijskih preizkusov ravnotežja so enostavnost, hitra izvedljivost in cenovna ugodnost. Izmerili smo 217 zdravih enajstletnikov (118 fantov in 99 deklet). Potrdili smo povezave med flamingo preizkusom in koordinacijo (r = ,521 p < ,01), eksplozivnostjo (r = - ,392), močjo rok in ramenskega obroča (r = - ,535, p < ,01), močjo trupa (r = - ,420), hitrostjo (r = ,374, p < ,01) in vzdržljivostjo (r = ,400, p < ,01). Balance and motor skills are essential prerequisites for normal physical development of a child (Gallahue et al., 2012). One of the important motor skills is also balance. Nowadays, the study of balance and its measurement characteristics is gaining more research attention. Some tests have otherwise been developed for clinical purposes, especially for measuring older people and individuals with neurological problems and damage but these are certainly not suitable for testing healthy children. Benefits of these clinical assessments are its simplicity, affordability and are quick to perform. Some of these tests do not have a golden standard in comparison to laboratory balance tests which in generally have good measurement characteristics. There are several methods of measuring balance (electromyography, stabilometry and acceleration tests, posturography, analysis of movement), that give us more specific data but are expensive and time consuming for measure the population, and therefore are more suitable for measuring smaller groups. The intention of doctoral thesis was to determine the measurement characteristics of some non-laboratory balance tests for eleven-year-olds. The aim of our study was also to examine the relationship between balance ability, fundamental motor skills and morphology measured by using a test battery called “športno-vzgojni karton” (ŠVK), which has recently been renamed into SLOfit test battery. Additionally, we investigated the effect of gender on balance abilities. We measured 217 eleven-year old pre-adolescents (118 boys and 99 girls). We determined the measurement characteristics of three static balance tests (Flamingo test, one-leg stance on the ground, one-leg stance on the low beam) and three dynamic balance test (walking on the low beam, one-leg stance on T-bench and bipedal stance on T-bench). The golden standard was determined with a tandem stance on the force plate which was measured in 45 eleven-year old (21 boys and 24 girls). Other fundamental motor skills were measured with SLOFIT motor assessment tools, which regularly and systematically monitor the physical fitness of children and adolescents for more than 30 years and with more than one million individuals and their measurement sets till now. Our results showed the high intrarater reliability and the of some balance tests (Flamingo test, one-leg stance on the low beam and walking test on low-beam) but not also the construct validity. Correlations coefficients between balance and fundamental motor skill performance were examined. We found significant associations between Flamingo test and coordination (r = ,521, p < ,01), explosive muscle power (r = - ,392), flexed arm hang (r = - ,535, p < ,01), abdominal strength (r = ,420), speed (r = ,374, p < ,01) and endurance (r = ,400, p < ,01). Dynamic balance ability was significantly related to coordination (r = - ,424, p < ,01), explosive muscle power (r = - ,466, p < ,01) and flexed arm hang (r = - ,248, p < ,01). Triceps skin fold was associated with Flamingo test (r = ,579, p < ,01). We also found some significant differences in balance abilities between gender. Girls achieved better results in laboratory balance tests tandem stance with open and closed eyes and one-leg stance on the low beam. Based on our results, we found that are Flamingo test and walking on low beam the best balance assessment tools because of their proper intrarater reliability. We propose Flamingo test to measure static balance abilities and walking on low beam to measure dynamic balance abilities for further researching of human balance (researching in other age groups). Both tests are suitable for primary school population, have widespread use and are also easy to apply and affordable.

- Abstract
In Interwar Romania, due to the high rate of the so called social diseases which included both tuberculosis and venereal diseases, there was a strong need for public policies to address these matters. Consequently, throughout the 1920s, both the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Public Health Care have made important efforts to develop the existing infrastructure. New education and medical legislation was introduced to educate school population about the need to seek medical help when necessary. Also, students in middle schools were trained to understand the way human reproductory system worked and to recognise the diseases affecting it. In spite of that, studies conducted by Universities have shown that students were affected by the same diseases as the general population that had no access to high education. Despite all the efforts, preventive measures of the social diseases remained unknown to the general public, which proved to be reluctant to address doctors unless it was their last resort. This attitude typical of both rural and urban population was considered irresponsible by doctors and must be linked with the traditional mentality of the Romanian society. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: High blood pressure (HBP) is a health problem the prevalence of which has increased in young populations. Overweight and obesity in early ages have been directly related to its development. Due to the impact of HBP, it is necessary to provide tools that facilitate its early diagnosis, with useful anthropometric variables being those that assess obesity. The objective of this paper was to determine the diagnostic accuracy of anthropometric variables to detect HBP. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 265 students aged 6&ndash, 16. The diagnosis of HBP was made following the criteria proposed by the Spanish Association of Pediatrics. Through different statistical methods, the association between anthropometric variables of general obesity with HBP was analyzed. Results: Waist circumference (WC) showed the best diagnostic capacity (area under the receiver operating characteristic curve = 0.729), with a sensitivity and specificity of 72.2% and 76%, respectively, for a cut-off point of 73.5 cm. In the adjusted multivariate analysis, an association was found between HBP and anthropometric variables: WC (odds ratio (OR) = 10.7), body mass index (OR = 7.5), waist-to-height ratio (OR = 5.5) and body fat percentage (OR = 5.3) (p <, 0.05). Conclusions: The anthropometric variables studied showed a moderate predictive capacity for HBP, highlighting WC, which showed the strongest association with HBP in the infant and child population.

This analysis assumes that there are differences between the Romanian regions regarding the structure of school population, by the level of education. Within this framework, there are considered the identification of the structure of the school population, by the level of education, and also the presentation of the differences in this respect between the eight Romanian regions. Thus, depending on the level of education, where the school population operates, we intend to identify the training level profile specific of each region of the country. The data used in this analysis are taken from the Statistical Yearbook of Romania, NIS, Bucharest (Anuarul statistic al României, INS, Bucureşti), 2013, and represent the values of the indicators registered, at regional level, in 2011. [10] [11] The statistical method used in this analysis is the factorial correspondences analysis, applied by means of the SPSS statistical software. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Ba#ckground/Obje#ctive: To examine the psychometric properties of the Conners 3 ADHD Index (Conners 3 AI) and the Conners Early Children Global Index (Conners ECGI) parents’ form (PF) and teachers’ form (TF) in Spanish schoolers. Method: Two-phase cross-sectional study. In the first phase, information was gathered from teachers (n = 1,796) and parents (n = 882) of 4-5 and 10-11 year-old children. In the second phase (n = 196), children at risk of ADHD and controls were individually assessed. Results: The results confirmed the two-factor structure of the Conners 3 ADHD Index, which contains hyperactive-impulsive and inattentive symptoms, and the two-factor structure of the Conners ECGI PF, consisting of emotional lability and restless-impulsive symptoms. In contrast with the original version, the Conners ECGI TF presented an additional inattentive factor. Moderate-to-high rates of evidence of convergent validity with Child Behavior Checklist and Kiddie-Schedule for Affective Disorders & Schizophrenia, and evidence of external validity (academic achievement) were found. Scores were significantly higher in boys than in girls, for both indexes. Raw scores corresponding to clinical T-scores were higher than the original version. Conclusions: The Conners indexes may be considered reliable and valid instruments for detecting ADHD symptoms in Spanish populations.

Aim:. To study the specificity of hospitalized adolescent suicide attempters. Method:. Among a national sample of students (n = 11,718, mean age = 16.6 years) studied in 1999, 9.2% (n = 1078) made at least one suicide attempt during their life (SA); 21.9% (n = 234) of them were hospitalized (HSA). We identified the risk factors (family, school, behavioral and psychological) of SA and HSA by comparing (by gender) a) suicide attempters to non-suicide attempters and b) hospitalized suicide attempters to non-hospitalized suicide attempters. Results:. Both for girls and boys, the risk factors for SA varied. However, certain risk factors, particularly depressive mood, low self-esteem and poor parent-child relationships, were not associated with hospitalization. Hospitalized suicide attempters had more personal and social problems. But there is an important difference according to gender: in boys, hospitalization is related to physical fighting (OR = 2.2) and offences (OR = 3.4), in girls to running away (OR = 1.7), consumption of illegal drugs other than cannabis (OR = 2.0), having a living standard outside average (OR = 2.0) and going to a private school (OR = 1.7). Conclusion:. Suicide attempters with problem behavior are more at risk of being hospitalized than others. However, the difference between hospitalized and non-hospitalized subjects was smaller than expected. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of healthy Haemophilus influenzae (Hi) pharyngeal carriers in a representative sample of the Catalonian school population, as well as the factors associated. A two-stage cluster sampling was carried out. Parents were given a questionnaire to collect information on sociodemographic and epidemiological variables. A pharyngeal swab was performed on children when informed consent was given by parents, and was cultured on chocolate agar with 260 μg/ml bacitracin. Of the 1212 children studied, 316 (26%) H. influenzae carriers were detected: 5 (0.4%) serotype b, 1 (0.08%) serotype c, 6 (0.5%) serotype e, 5 (0.4%) serotype f, and 299 (24.7%) non-typable. Age, gender and geographical location were the only variables associated with H. influenzae carrier status. The prevalence of non-typable H. influenzae carriers was similar to that of studies carried out in other countries, while that of serotype b carriers was similar to the remainder of H. influenzae capsulates, and lower than that described in previous studies. These data are in accordance with the low incidence of the disease observed in our context, although the possibility that the vaccine coverage may have affected the results of this study cannot be dismissed. This research covers cultural consumption in the young population, highlighting the incidents that it has for the development of individuals and their different socialization mechanics according to their personal and collective criteria, forging behavior patterns according to their cultural trends, which They are represented by consumption immersed in today's society. The research is divided into three chapters where it begins with the conceptual forms of consumption and cultural consumption, and then covers cultural consumption from a national aspect supported by surveys conducted by the Dane, ending with the theoretical-empirical field, which involved the implementation and execution of surveys in different educational institutions of Bogotá and its metropolitan surroundings. In this way, from different theoretical references (Lipovetsky, Bauman, Douglas, Feixa, Sunkel and Bisbal), which contribute towards the structural and conceptual body of the investigation, the theoretical hypotheses of relationship are explained, which were supported in the light of the evidence empirical that was tabulated from the questionnaires.

This paper considers the results obtained from a 2015 study on videogames and academic performance in Middle School students (12-14 years-olds) in four Colombian institutions in the municipality of La Estrella, Antioquia.

562 schoolchildren from Oporto were patch tested with the standard series of the Portuguese Contact Dermatitis Group (GPEDC). 13.3% of the children had positive reactions, the most common being to neomycin, thimerosal, para-tertiary-butylphenol-formaldehyde (PRBPI) resin and fragrance-mix. Thus contact allergy in children seems not to be as unusual previously thought. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To know the prevalence of obesity in primary and secondary school students, and to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of anthropometric variables for its detection. Cross-sectional study. Rural area of Córdoba. In the year 2014. Student population. A stratified sampling was performed according to age, gender and educational centers. A total of 323 students from 6 to 16 years were included in the study, all parents had signed informed consent. The prevalence of obesity was determined and sociodemographic, anthropometric, physical condition and dietary predictor variables were collected. A binary logistic regression was performed determining crude and adjusted Odds Ratio (OR) values, ROC curves were obtained and cut-off values were determined, calculating the sensitivity, specificity and Youden index. The prevalence of overweight and obesity was 26.2% and 22.3%, respectively. The high prevalence of obesity, the low-medium adherence to the Mediterranean diet and the low physical fitness make this population a priority target for the prevention of future cardiovascular events. The WtHR has been the best anthropometric predictor of obesity, recommending its use for the diagnosis of obesity in children at the expense of body mass index.
