Camera calibration is a preliminary step in sports analytics which enables us to transform player positions to standard playing area coordinates. While many camera calibration systems work well when the visual content contains sufficient clues, such as a key frame, calibrating without such information, such as may be needed when processing footage captured by a coach from the sidelines or stands, is challenging. In this paper an innovative automatic camera calibration system, which does not make use of any key frames, is presented for sports analytics. The proposed system consists of three components: a robust linear panorama module, a playing area estimation module, and a homography estimation module. It can eliminate distortion and calibrate the camera in each frame simultaneously, using correspondences between pairs of consecutive frames. Experiments on real data evaluate the performance and demonstrate the robustness of the system.

© 2017 IEEE. Precise friend recommendation is an important problem in social media. Although most social websites provide some kinds of auto friend searching functions, their accuracies are not satisfactory. In this paper, we propose a more precise auto friend recommendation method with two stages. In the first stage, by utilizing the information of the relationship between texts and users, as well as the friendship information between users, we align different social networks and choose some "possible friends." In the second stage, with the relationship between image features and users, we build a topic model to further refine the recommendation results. Because some traditional methods, such as variational inference and Gibbs sampling, have their limitations in dealing with our problem, we develop a novel method to find out the solution of the topic model based on series expansion. We conduct experiments on the Flickr dataset to show that the proposed algorithm recommends friends more precisely and faster than traditional methods.

This paper presents the results of a recent investigation into Insulated Rail Joint Tie Plate fatigue failures. In particular it focuses on the results of data obtained through field strain gauge and accelerometer measurements of in-service Insulated Rail Joint Tie Plates. These measurements have identified a significant variability in the strains present in similar joints operating under identical load conditions. This variability in stress invariably has a significant influence on the life of the joints. The results of rainflow counting and a fatigue analysis are also presented.

The Cooperative Research Centre (CRC) for Rail Innovation is conducting a tranche of industry-led research projects looking into safer rail level crossings. This paper will provide an overview of the Affordable Level Crossings project, a project that is performing research in both engineering and human factors aspects of low-cost level crossing warning devices (LCLCWDs), and is facilitating a comparative trial of these devices over a period of 12 months in several jurisdictions. Low-cost level crossing warning devices (LCLCWDs) are characterised by the use of alternative technologies for high cost components including train detection and connectivity (e.g. radar, acoustic, magnetic induction train detection systems and wireless connectivity replacing traditional track circuits and wiring). These devices often make use of solar power where mains power is not available, and aim to make substantial savings in lifecycle costs. The project involves trialling low-cost level crossing warning devices in shadow-mode, where devices are installed without the road-user interface at a number of existing level crossing sites that are already equipped with conventional active warning systems. It may be possible that the deployment of lower-cost devices can provide a significantly larger safety benefit over the network than a deployment of expensive conventional devices, as the lower cost would allow more passive level crossing sites to be upgraded with the same capital investment. The project will investigate reliability and safety integrity issues of the low-cost devices, as well as evaluate lifecycle costs and investigate human factors issues related to warning reliability. This paper will focus on the requirements and safety issues of LCLCWDs, and will provide an overview of the Rail CRC projects.

Ratchetting failure of railhead material adjacent to endpost which is placed in the air gap between the two rail ends at insulated rail joints causes significant economic problems to the railway operators who rely on the proper functioning of these joints for train control using the signalling track circuitry. The ratchetting failure is a localised problem and is very difficult to predict even when complex analytical methods are employed. This paper presents a novel experimental technique that enables measurement of the progressive ratchetting. A special purpose test rig was developed for this purpose and commissioned by the Centre for Railway Engineering at Central Queensland University. The rig also provides the capability of testing of the wheel/rail rolling contract conditions. The results provide confidence that accurate measurement of the localised failure of railhead material can be achieved using the test rig.

Significant wheel-rail dynamic forces occur because of imperfections in the wheels and/or rail. One of the key responses to the transmission of these forces down through the track is impact force on the sleepers. Dynamic analysis of nonlinear systems is very complicated and does not lend itself easily to a classical solution of multiple equations. Trying to deduce the behaviour of track components from experimental data is very difficult because such data is hard to obtain and applies to only the particular conditions of the track being tested. The finite element method can be the best solution to this dilemma. This paper describes a finite element model using the software package ANSYS for various sized flat defects in the tread of a wheel rolling at a typical speed on heavy haul track. The paper explores the dynamic response of a prestressed concrete sleeper to these defects.

Effective streaming of video can be achieved by providing more bits to the most important region in the frame at the cost of reduced bits in the less important regions. This strategy can be beneficial for delivering high quality videos in mobile devices, especially when the availability of bandwidth is usually low and limited. While the state-of-the-art video codecs such as H.264 may have been optimised for perceived quality, it is hypothesised that users will give more attention to interesting region/object when watching videos. Therefore, giving a higher quality to region of interest (ROI)while reducing quality of other areas may result in improving the overall perceived quality without necessarily increasing the bitrate. In this paper, the impact of ROI-based encoded video on perceived quality is investigated by conducting a user study for varous target bitrates. The results from the user study demonstrate that ROI-based video coding has superior perceived quality compared to normal encoded video at the same bitrate in the lower bitrate range.

Feature extraction and selection are critical processes in developing facial expression recognition (FER) systems. While many algorithms have been proposed for these processes, direct comparison between texture, geometry and their fusion, as well as between multiple selection algorithms has not been found for spontaneous FER. This paper addresses this issue by proposing a unified framework for a comparative study on the widely used texture (LBP, Gabor and SIFT) and geometric (FAP) features, using Adaboost, mRMR and SVM feature selection algorithms. Our experiments on the Feedtum and NVIE databases demonstrate the benefits of fusing geometric and texture features, where SIFT+FAP shows the best performance, while mRMR outperforms Adaboost and SVM. In terms of computational time, LBP and Gabor perform better than SIFT. The optimal combination of SIFT+FAP+mRMR also exhibits a state-of-the-art performance.

Almost every aspect of how we create, transmit, and consume video has changed, but video interfaces still mimic those from video's inception. We extend Temporal Semantic Compression for interactive video browsing, which uses an arbitrary frame-by-frame interest measure to sub-sample video in real time, with user interface elements that visualize these measures and the effect of compressing on them. We experiment with a novel interest measure for popularity, and design novel visualizations for expressing interest measures and the compression interaction. We conduct the first formative evaluation of the TSC paradigm, with 8 subjects, and report design implications arising from it.
