Confinement is a process by which particles with fractional quantum numbers bind together to form quasiparticles with integer quantum numbers. The constituent particles are confined by an attractive interaction whose strength increases with increasing particle separation and as a consequence, individual particles are not found in isolation. This phenomenon is well known in particle physics where quarks are confined in baryons and mesons. An analogous phenomenon occurs in certain magnetic insulators; weakly coupled chains of spins S=1/2. The collective excitations in these systems is spinons (S=1/2). At low temperatures weak coupling between chains can induce an attractive interaction between pairs of spinons that increases with their separation and thus leads to confinement. In this paper, we employ inelastic neutron scattering to investigate the spinon confinement in the quasi-1D S=1/2 XXZ antiferromagnet SrCo2V2O8. Spinon excitations are observed above TN in quantitative agreement with established theory. Below TN the pairs of spinons are confined and two sequences of meson-like bound states with longitudinal and transverse polarizations are observed. Several theoretical approaches are used to explain the data. A new theoretical technique based on Tangent-space Matrix Product States gives a very complete description of the data and provides good agreement not only with the energies of the bound modes but also with their intensities. We also successfully explained the effect of temperature on the excitations including the experimentally observed thermally induced resonance between longitudinal modes below TN ,and the transitions between thermally excited spinon states above TN. In summary, our work establishes SrCo2V2O8 as a beautiful paradigm for spinon confinement in a quasi-1D quantum magnet and provides a comprehensive picture of this process., Comment: 17 pages, 18 figures, submitted to PRX

We show that in the sudden expansion of a spin-balanced two-component Fermi gas into an empty optical lattice induced by releasing particles from a trap, over a wide parameter regime, the radius $R_n$ of the particle cloud grows linearly in time. This allow us to define the expansion velocity $V_{ex}$ from $R_n=V_{ex}t$. The goal of this work is to clarify the dependence of the expansion velocity on the initial conditions which we establish from time-dependent density matrix renormalization group simulations, both for a box trap and a harmonic trap. As a prominent result, the presence of a Mott-insulating region leaves clear fingerprints in the expansion velocity. We present release 1.3 of the ALPS (Algorithms and Libraries for Physics Simulations) project, an international open source software project to develop libraries and application programs for the simulation of strongly correlated quantum lattice models such as quantum magnets, lattice bosons, and strongly correlated fermion systems. Development is centered on common XML and binary data formats, on libraries to simplify and speed up code development, and on full-featured simulation programs. The programs enable non-experts to start carrying out numerical simulations by providing basic implementations of the important algorithms for quantum lattice models: classical and quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) using non-local updates, extended ensemble simulations, exact and full diagonalization (ED), as well as the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG). Changes in the new release include a DMRG program for interacting models, support for translation symmetries in the diagonalization programs, the ability to define custom measurement operators, and support for inhomogeneous systems, such as lattice models with traps. By means of a numerical analysis using a non-Abelian symmetry realization of the density matrix renormalization group, we study the behavior of vector chirality correlations in isotropic frustrated chains of spin S=1 and S=1/2, subject to a strong external magnetic field. It is shown that the field induces a phase with spontaneously broken chiral symmetry, in line with earlier theoretical predictions. We use the dynamical density matrix renormalization group technique to show that the high-energy part of the spectrum of a S=1 Haldane chain, placed in a strong external magnetic field $H$ exceeding the Haldane gap $\Delta$, contains edge singularities, similar to those known to exist in the low-energy spectral response. It is demonstrated that in the frequency range $\omega\gtrsim \Delta$ the longitudinal (with respect to the applied field) dynamical structure factor is dominated by the power-law singularity $S^{\parallel}(q=\pi,\omega)\propto(\omega-\omega_{0})^{-\alpha'}$. We study the behavior of the high-energy edge exponent $\alpha'$ and the edge $\omega_{0}$ as functions of the magnetic field. The existence of edge singularities at high energies is directly related to the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid character of the ground state at $H>\Delta$ and is expected to be a general feature of one-dimensional gapped spin systems in high magnetic fields., Comment: (v2) error in Eq.(11) corrected

We propose an effective theory for the critical phase of a quantum ferrimagnetic chain with alternating spins 1 and 1/2 in an external magnetic field. With the help of the matrix product variational approach, the system is mapped to a spin-1/2 XXZ chain in an (effective) magnetic field; as a byproduct, we obtain an excellent description of the optical magnon branch in the gapped phase. Recent finite-temperature DMRG results for the low-temperature part of the specific heat are well described by the present approach, and the ``pop-up'' peaks, developing near the critical field values and in the middle of the critical phase, are identified with the contributions from two different spinon bands of the effective spin-1/2 chain. The effect should be as well observable in other spin-gap systems in an external field, particularly in spin ladders., Comment: 4 RevTeX pages, 2 ps figures included
