Cette étude analyse un document historique datant de 1758, dénommé l’Atlas topographique du comté de Bitche, situé au nord-est de la France. Ce document signé d’un ingénieur français a été élaboré au cours du petit âge glaciaire, après une période d’abandon des usages d’environ 100 ans en raison de graves troubles politiques. Il y décrit les hêtraies-chênaies (âge, dimensions, état sanitaire, régénération) du Pays de Bitche, afin d’en évaluer les richesses forestières. Par conversion des données qualitatives de l’atlas en données semi-quantitatives, il a été possible de reconstituer les paysages de l’époque. Les correspondances âges et diamètres proposés par l’atlas ont été réévaluées par carottages d’arbres actuels. Les résultats indiquent une hêtraie mature dominée par le Hêtre, très riche en gros bois et très gros bois incluant aussi une grande quantité de chênes morts par compétition avec le hêtre et stress climatiques répétés. La meilleure résistance du hêtre aux stress climatiques est discutée.

International audience; The Eurasian wild grapevine Vitis vinifera ssp. sylvestris ([Gmelin] Hegi) is currently distributed in a few alluvial and colluvial forests around the Mediterranean basin between the 30th and 49th northern parallels, from sea level up to an altitude of 2000m. These areas are refugia where grapevine pest (phylloxera) and fungi diseases (oïdium; mildew) have a restricted spread. These pest and diseases were imported with the American Vitis species at the end of the 19th century. Phylloxera entered floodplains massively thanks to large-scale hydraulic works, which have deprived alluvial zones of regular flooding.Today, another threat should be taken into account: taxonomic pollution. Gene flows between wild grapevines and the Vitis taxa that escape from vineyards are now occurring. The taxa may be either European cultivars (Vitis vinifera ssp. vinifera), interspecific cultivars or artificial polyhybrids of American Vitis species used as rootstocks.In the south of France, a few wild grapevines have been reported along hedges close to the lower Rhône valley. Two other small popu- lations of Vitis sp. were found in two private lands, the Meyranes and the mas Saint-Georges woodlands, in the Camargue delta. In Meyranes, true wild grape vines are very rare, and much less abundant than in the mas Saint-Georges. The mas Saint-Georges population is particu- larly rich in Vitis individuals (an estimation of52 individuals).Old maps indicate that the mas Saint-Georges woodland was an ancient wetland, dried up after the Rhône embankment at the beginning of the 20th century. The forest stand is thus ca. 100 years old. Wild grapevines have found refugia in this young woodland.The study aimed to provide insight into this Vitis population through field, ecological and genetic analyses.The genetic composition and diversity were analyzed on 37 samples. Thirty-one (31) indi- viduals collected were true wild grapevines. Their genetic diversity was found to be similar to that of other European populations. Four were hybrids/introgressed between rootstocks and wild grapevines, and two were hybrids/intro- gressed wild grapevines and cultivars.We found three haplotypes (H1, H3, H4) in the true wild grapevines: 14 individuals had H1 haplotype, which is common to wild popu- lations of western Europe and largely dominant among true wild grapevines. Four individuals had H3 haplotype, which is common in wild grapevine populations from Central Europe, but also present in some cultivars. Thirteen individual had H4 haplotype, which is common to western grapevines and a few cultivars. The three haplotypes H1, H3 and H4 found in this population suggest that the Camargue is situated in a convergence zone between pop- ulations from west, center and south of the Mediterranean basin.For hybrids between wild grapevines and root- stocks, we showed that hybridization can occur in both directions.We measured morphological features. The mean diameter of the population is 4.9cm ± 1.9cm. The biggest lianas reach 7cm diameter and live in the canopy. Dendrochrological data indicate that these big lianas are 38-50 years old.True wild grapevines live within the forest and along a few edges, climbing on white poplars, elms and ashes. Hybrids are located only along forest edges. This means that the woodland is closed enough to avoid pollen exchange with exotic Vitis.Architectural features of the woodland were evaluated with the help of hemispherical photographies. Gap fraction (TG: mean 0.24; amplitude 0.11-0.30) and canopy openess (CO: 0.20; 0.10-0.26) as well as light extinction coef- ficient (Kb), Fraction Cover (FC) and Fraction Soil (FS) from nadir view all indicate a relatively high porosity of the canopy to direct light. With regard to this rather high light microclimate in the understories, the native liana can establish sustainably.However seedlings were not found in this woodland, suggesting that sexual reproduction no longer occurs. The present environment in the delta is thus not suitable for wild grapevine maintenance on the long term. This result fits with conclusions of other studies of wild grape- vines in Europe.In contrast, seedlings from American root- stocks are numerous in the adjacent Meyranes woodland, and globally in the delta. Expansion of these hybrids is helped by abundant fructifi- cations, transported by birds.Conservation of these last individuals of wild grapevines should be set up with the land owners consent. More ambitious schemes, i.e. increase in forest cover and return of flooding, would however be necessary for a long term conservation of the species.; La vigne sauvage (Vitis vinifera ssp. sylvestris) est en déclin marqué depuis la fin du xixe siècle. Depuis 2000, l’espèce est considérée en danger critique d’extinction. Des prospections dans la vallée du Rhône ont montré qu’il existait quelques micropopulations jusque dans le delta. Une population de 52 pieds de grandes dimen- sions et présentant un phénotype sauvage a récemment été découverte en rive gauche du Grand Rhône, dans le boisement privé du mas Saint-Georges.Une recherche pluridisciplinaire a été entreprise sur cette population de vignes afin de recons- tituer leur histoire ; les outils utilisés ont été la génétique (effectuée sur 37 individus), l’éco- logie (dimensions des pieds, identification des porteurs), et la dendrochronologie effectuée sur 5 pieds. L’habitat forestier a également été analysé du point de vue architectural et dyna- mique de la lumière.Trente et un (31) individus ont été déterminés comme étant de véritables vignes sauvages, dont la diversité est légèrement inférieure à celle des autres populations européennes. Quatre sont des individus hybrides ou introgressés : deux entre vignes sauvages et vignes américaines, et deux entre vignes sauvages et vignes cultivées. Trois haplotypes typiques des vignes sauvages ont été déterminés, indiquant que ce site est à un point de convergence entre populations méditerranéennes du sud, de l’ouest et du centre de la Méditerranée.Le boisement a été suffisamment fermé pour éviter les échanges de pollen avec les vignes américaines échappées.À partir de ces données et de l’analyse des cartes anciennes, il a pu être déduit que ce boi- sement s’était développé au début du xxe siècle à partir d’un marais asséché par les aménage- ments hydrauliques. L’âge des vignes, estimé par la dendrochronologie à une fourchette de38 à 50 ans, pourrait cependant être de l’âge de la forêt. Les vignes se seraient installées lors de la succession forestière. Les caractéristiques architecturales du boisement (à la fois dense et lumineux) ont permis à la vigne de s’y établir sur une longue durée.Actuellement, cette population ne se reproduit plus. Les conditions actuelles ne sont donc plus favorables à l’espèce, à l’inverse des populations échappées de porte-greffes, très abondantes en Camargue. Une protection forte de ces derniers pieds de vigne forestière devrait être mise en place avec l’accord des propriétaires.

International audience; In the 20th century, deer became sought-after game for hunters and was subject to the rule of national law. Hunting rules were devised to regulate deer populations as a result of which these grew significantly within a few decades. As forest management evolved towards artificial stands and low stand densities, feeding of animals in winter and intensive farming, populations of wild ungulates exploded along with the artificial growth of the environment’s the feeding capacity. The absence of predators also had an impact. To limit these ungulate populations requires the establishment of an intelligent policy of restrictions on the demand for forest natural resources: forest management that is closer to the natural model (of the selection system type that lowers the feeding capacity of the undergrowth by making it darker), compliance with hunting rules and re-establishment of predators. Additionally, other measures designed to limit excessive entry into forests by the public by making them more difficult to access could also be implemented.; Au XXe siècle, le cerf devient un gibier intéressant pour la chasse et est soumis aux règles de droit national. Des règles de chasse sont édictées pour réguler les populations, qui ont largement progressé en quelques décennies. L’évolution de la sylviculture vers l’artificialisation des peuplements et des faibles densités de peuplements, le nourrissage des animaux l’hiver, et l’agriculture intensive ont contribué à l’explosion des populations d’ongulés sauvages, en augmentant artificiellement la capacité alimentaire du milieu. L’absence de prédateurs est également en cause. Pour limiter les populations d’ongulés, il faudrait mettre en place une politique intelligente de restriction de la demande des ressources naturelles de la forêt : une gestion forestière plus proche du modèle naturel (type gestion jardinatoire qui abaisse la capacité alimentaire des sousbois, en les assombrissant), le respect des lois de la chasse, le retour des prédateurs. D’autres mesures à mettre en place sont de limiter la pénétration excessive du public en rendant l’accès aux forêts moins facile.

International audience; The aim of this article is to lay down the basis for sustainable management of large game and forests in the mountains the Vosges (north-eastern France). The data presented in Part 1 are on the one hand a recap of the feeding and reproductive strategies of the species, together with some of the natural factors that regulate it. Interactions and feedback between deer and forests are described; in particular the consequences of browsing and debarking of forest vegetation. These data are helpful in more accurately positioning the species in the natural trophic networks of beech/fir plantations. Sustainable management proposals are more robust when they rely on an analysis of the natural and human history of the Vosges over the very long term. In spite of their gaps, archaeological and historic data are sufficiently documented to trace back the history of deer to the Neolithic. They attest that native large wildlife (bovids, cervids, including elk and deer) suffered persecution right from Early Middle Ages. By the year 1000, the more formidable herbivores (bovids and elk) had been eradicated. Persecution worsened as humans populated the massif. The big predators (bear, lynx, wolf) disappeared during the next millennium. Deer too almost disappeared during the 19th century. At the same time, forest habitats were damaged by sometimes heavy human influence arising from various forms of deforestation and overuse. By the end of the 19th century, nature in the Vosges was under serious strain, both on its habitats and fauna.; Cet article a pour objectif de poser les bases d’une gestion durable du grand gibier et de la forêt dans les montagnes vosgiennes (nord-est de la France). Les données présentées dans cette première partie traitent d’une part de quelques rappels des stratégies alimentaires et reproductives de l’espèce, ainsi que certains facteurs naturels de sa régulation. Les interactions et rétroactions entre cerf et forêt sont abordées, notamment les conséquences de l’abroutissement et de l’écorçage sur la végétation forestière. Ces données permettent de mieux situer l’espèce dans les réseaux trophiques naturels de la hêtraie-sapinière. Les propositions de gestion durable sont plus robustes si elles s’appuient sur une analyse de l’histoire naturelle et humaine des Vosges sur le très long terme. Les données archéologiques et historiques, quoique lacunaires, sont toutefois suffisamment documentées pour permettre de retracer l’histoire du cerf depuis le Néolithique. Elles révèlent que la grande faune native (bovidés, cervidés incluant élan et cerf) souffre de persécutions dès le haut Moyen Âge. Avant l’an mil, les plus imposants des grands herbivores (bovidés, élan) ont été éradiqués. Cette persécution s’accentue avec l’emprise humaine dans le massif. Les grands prédateurs (ours, lynx, loup) disparaissent au cours du millénaire suivant. Le cerf a lui aussi bien failli disparaître au cours du XIXe siècle. En parallèle, les habitats forestiers souffrent d’une anthropisation parfois conséquente, liées aux déforestations et surexploitations diverses. La nature vosgienne sort fortement éprouvée à la fin du XIXe siècle, tant au niveau de ses habitats que de sa faune.

Wild grapevine (Vitis vinifera ssp sylvestris) is considered to be nearly extinct in its western range as a result of the expansion of American diseases combined with drastic hydraulic works in the region. In such a context, the discovery of a population of 120 individuals, offered an excellent opportunity to evaluate the status of the plant at the current edge of its western range. We focussed on the distribution patterns and the reconstruction of the history of the population through a combination of ecological and genetic data. Fifty-one individual plants present in a forest plot of 9.72 ha were studied. For each individual, geographical, morphological and growth strategy data were collected. Individuals were genotyped at 14 SSR loci. Most grapevines were clumped and their density varied between forest plots with different management over the past few centuries. Overall, the number of stems possessed by each plant ranged from one to nine. Heights varied from 14 to 24 m, with diameter ranging from 0.9 to 4.6 cm (mean = 2.4 cm). The analysis of the genetic data showed that (i) no cultivar or rootstocks were present in the population; (ii) out of 57 individuals considered in this study, six were clones; and (iii) all 14 loci were polymorphic. Six groups were shown to be significantly related. In spite of a relatively high-genetic diversity, the population is currently at a critical state at the local scale because of the low chances of seedling survival for more than 1 year. The clones were also directly destroyed by human management. The ideal way to improve the status of the wild grapevine in the Bassée Forest would be to re-create zones of erosion as well as to create a strict conservation area or reserve encompassing the entire region.
