Tima, a language spoken in the Nuba Mountains of Sudan, uses three derivation markers (with various allomorphs) to either increase or decrease the valency of the verb. Middle voice and antipassive marking are used to reduce the valency. Causative marking may on the one hand increase the valency of monovalent verbs, while on the other hand it functions as an anticausative/passive marker for erstwhile transitive verbs. The distribution of these derivation markers across the formal alternation patterns augmentation, reduction, and double marking (as described by Nichols et al. 2004), is investigated in order to establish certain verb groups. Due to the peculiar behaviour of the causative marker, in that the device can be used to form a causal verb as well as a noncausal verb, the connection between causative and passive functions is further scrutinised by relating the Tima data to a grammaticalisation path, as suggested by Haspelmath (1990), from causative via reflexive-causative to passive. Tima deviates from this path: A reflexive-causative function is not attested; instead we find an anticausative function. The unlikely assumption that the Tima ergative construction originates from a further grammaticalisation of the causative-passive morpheme is also considered. Le tima, une langue parlée dans les monts Nouba au Soudan, dispose de trois marqueurs de dérivation (avec divers allomorphes) pour augmenter ou diminuer la valence du verbe. La voix moyenne et le marquage antipassif sont utilisés pour réduire la valence. Le marquage causatif peut, d’une part, augmenter la valence des verbes monovalents et, d’autre part, fonctionner comme un marqueur anticausatif/passif pour les anciens verbes transitifs. La distribution de ces marqueurs de dérivation à travers les schémas d’alternance formelle augmentation, réduction et double marquage (tels que décrits par Nichols et al. 2004) est étudiée afin d’établir certains groupes de verbes. En raison du comportement particulier du marqueur causatif, à savoir qu’il peut être utilisé pour former un verbe causal ainsi qu’un verbe non causal, le lien entre les fonctions causatives et passives est examiné plus en détail en rapprochant les données du tima à un chemin de grammaticalisation, tel que suggéré par Haspelmath (1990), du causatif au passif en passant par le réflexif-causatif. Le tima s’écarte de ce chemin : une fonction causative-réflexive n’est pas attestée ; à la place, nous trouvons une fonction anticausative. L’hypothèse peu probable que la construction ergative du tima provient d’une grammaticalisation supplémentaire du morphème causatif-passif est également considérée.
