We study monolayer WSe2 using ultrafast electron diffraction. We introduce an approach to quantitatively extract atomic-site-specific information, providing an element-specific view of incoherent atomic vibrations following femtosecond excitation. Via differences between W and Se vibrations, we identify stages in the nonthermal evolution of the lattice. Combined with a calculated phonon dispersion, this element specificity enables us to identify a long-lasting overpopulation of specific optical phonons, and to interpret the stages as energy transfer processes between specific phonon groups. These results demonstrate the appeal of resolving element-specific vibrational information in the ultrafast time domain., Comment: 13 pages, 3 figures

Galaxies evolve through a dynamic exchange of material with their immediate surrounding environment, the so-called circumgalactic medium (CGM). Understanding the physics of gas flows and the nature of the CGM is thus fundamental to studying galaxy evolution, especially at $4 \leq z \leq 6$ (i.e. at post-Reionization Epoch) when galaxies rapidly assembled their masses and reached their chemical maturity. Galactic outflows are predicted to enrich the CGM with metals, although gas stripping in systems undergoing a major merger has also been suggested to play a role. In this work, we explore the metal enrichment of the medium around merging galaxies at $z \sim 4.5$, observed by the ALMA Large Program to INvestigate [CII] at Early times (ALPINE). To do so, we study the nature of the [CII]158 $\mu$m emission in the CGM around these systems, using simulations to help disentangle the mechanisms contributing to the CGM metal pollution. By adopting an updated classification of major merger systems in the ALPINE survey, we select and analyze merging galaxies whose components can be spatially and/or spectrally resolved in a robust way. Thus, we can distinguish between the [CII] emission coming from the single components of the system and that coming from the system as a whole. We also make use of the \texttt{dustyGadget} cosmological simulation to select synthetic analogs of observed galaxies and guide the interpretation of the observational results. We find a large diffuse [CII] envelope ($\gtrsim 20 $ kpc) embedding all the merging systems, with at least $25 \%$ of the total [CII] emission coming from the medium \textit{between} the galaxies. Using predictions from \texttt{dustyGadget} we suggest that this emission has a multi-fold nature, with dynamical interactions between galaxies playing a major role in stripping the gas and enriching the medium with heavy elements.}, Comment: 22 pages, 15 figure, 2 tables. We investigate the degree of dust obscured star formation in 49 massive (${\rm log}_{10}(M_{\star}/{\rm M}_{\odot})>9$) Lyman-break galaxies (LBGs) at $z = 6.5$-$8$ observed as part of the ALMA Reionization Era Bright Emission Line Survey (REBELS) large program. By creating deep stacks of the photometric data and the REBELS ALMA measurements we determine the average rest-frame UV, optical and far-infrared (FIR) properties which reveal a significant fraction ($f_{\rm obs} = 0.4$-$0.7$) of obscured star formation, consistent with previous studies. From measurements of the rest-frame UV slope, we find that the brightest LBGs at these redshifts show bluer ($\beta \simeq -2.2$) colours than expected from an extrapolation of the colour-magnitude relation found at fainter magnitudes. Assuming a modified blackbody spectral-energy distribution (SED) in the FIR (with dust temperature of $T_{\rm d} = 46\,{\rm K}$ and $\beta_{\rm d} = 2.0$), we find that the REBELS sources are in agreement with the local ''Calzetti-like'' starburst Infrared-excess (IRX)-$\beta$ relation. By reanalysing the data available for 108 galaxies at $z \simeq 4$-$6$ from the ALPINE ALMA large program using a consistent methodology and assumed FIR SED, we show that from $z \simeq 4$-$8$, massive galaxies selected in the rest-frame UV have no appreciable evolution in their derived IRX-$\beta$ relation. When comparing the IRX-$M_{\star}$ relation derived from the combined ALPINE and REBELS sample to relations established at $z < 4$, we find a deficit in the IRX, indicating that at $z > 4$ the proportion of obscured star formation is lower by a factor of $\gtrsim 3$ at a given a $M_{\star}$. A key to understanding the formation of the first galaxies is to quantify the content of the molecular gas as the fuel for star formation activity through the epoch of reionization. In this paper, we use the 158$\mu$m [CII] fine-structure emission line as a tracer of the molecular gas in the interstellar medium (ISM) in a sample of $z=6.5-7.5$ galaxies recently unveiled by the Reionization Era Bright Line Emission Survey, REBELS, with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array. We find substantial amounts of molecular gas ($\sim10^{10.5}\ M_\odot$) comparable to those found in lower redshift galaxies for similar stellar masses ($\sim10^{10}\ M_\odot$). The REBELS galaxies appear to follow the standard scaling relations of molecular gas to stellar mass ratio ($\mu_{\rm mol}$) and gas depletion timescale ($t_{\rm dep}$) with distance to the star-forming main-sequence expected from extrapolations of $z\sim1-4$ observations. We find median values at $z\sim7$ of $\mu_{\rm mol}=2.6_{-1.4}^{4.1}$ and $t_{\rm dep}=0.5_{-0.14}^{+0.26}$ Gyr, indicating that the baryonic content of these galaxies is gas-phase dominated and little evolution from $z\sim7$ to 4. Our measurements of the cosmic density of molecular gas, log$(\rho_{\rm mol}/(M_\odot {\rm Mpc}^{-3}))=6.34^{+0.34}_{-0.31}$, indicate a steady increase by an order of magnitude from $z\sim7$ to 4., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics. 11 pages, 7 figures. The existence of luminous quasars (QSO) at the Epoch of Reionization (EoR; i.e. z>6) powered by supermassive black holes (SMBH) with masses $\gtrsim10^9~M_\odot$ challenges models of early SMBH formation. To shed light on the nature of these sources we started a multiwavelength programme based on a sample of 18 HYPerluminous quasars at the Epoch of ReionizatION (HYPERION). These are the luminous QSOs whose SMBH must have had the fastest mass growth during the Universe first Gyr. In this paper we present the HYPERION sample and report on the first of the 3 years planned observations of the 2.4 Ms XMM-Newton Multi-Year Heritage program on which HYPERION is based. The goal of this program is to accurately characterize the X-ray nuclear properties of QSOs at the EoR. Through a joint X-ray spectral analysis of 10 sources, in the rest-frame $\sim2-50$ keV range, we report a steep average photon index ($\Gamma\sim2.4\pm0.1$). Absorption is not required. The average $\Gamma$ is inconsistent at $\geq4\sigma$ level with the canonical 1.8-2 value measured in QSO at z<6. This spectral slope is also much steeper than that reported in lower-z QSOs with similar luminosity or accretion rate, thus suggesting a genuine redshift evolution. Alternatively, we can interpret this result as the presence of an unusually low-energy cutoff $E_{cut}\sim20$ keV on a standard $\Gamma=1.9$ power-law. We also report on mild indications that HYPERION QSOs show higher soft X-ray emission at 2 keV compared to the UV one at 2500A than expected by lower-z luminous AGN. We speculate that a redshift-dependent coupling between the corona and accretion disc or intrinsically different coronal properties may account for the steep spectral slopes, especially in the presence of powerful winds. We present Atacama Large Millimeter/Submillimeter Array (ALMA) [CII] and $\sim158$ $\rm\mu m$ continuum observations of REBELS-25, a massive, morphologically complex ultra-luminous infrared galaxy (ULIRG; $L_{\rm IR}=1.5^{+0.8}_{-0.5}\times10^{12}$ L$_\odot$) at $z=7.31$, spectroscopically confirmed by the Reionization Era Bright Emission Line Survey (REBELS) ALMA Large Programme. REBELS-25 has a significant stellar mass of $M_{*}=8^{+4}_{-2}\times10^{9}$ M$_\odot$. From dust-continuum and ultraviolet observations, we determine a total obscured + unobscured star formation rate of SFR $=199^{+101}_{-63}$ M$_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$. This is about four times the SFR estimated from an extrapolated main-sequence. We also infer a [CII]-based molecular gas mass of $M_{\rm H_2}=5.1^{+5.1}_{-2.6}\times10^{10}$ $M_\odot$, implying a molecular gas depletion time of $ t_{\rm depl, H_2}=0.3^{+0.3}_{-0.2}$ Gyr. We observe a [CII] velocity gradient consistent with disc rotation, but given the current resolution we cannot rule out a more complex velocity structure such as a merger. The spectrum exhibits excess [CII] emission at large positive velocities ($\sim500$ km s$^{-1}$), which we interpret as either a merging companion or an outflow. In the outflow scenario, we derive a lower limit of the mass outflow rate of 200 M$_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$, which is consistent with expectations for a star formation-driven outflow. Given its large stellar mass, SFR and molecular gas reservoir $\sim700$ Myr after the Big Bang, we explore the future evolution of REBELS-25. Considering a simple, conservative model assuming an exponentially declining star formation history, constant star formation efficiency, and no additional gas inflow, we find that REBELS-25 has the potential to evolve into a galaxy consistent with the properties of high-mass quiescent galaxies recently observed at $z\sim4$., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. 21 pages, 8 figures

We present the first observational infrared luminosity function (IRLF) measurement in the Epoch of Reionization (EoR) based on a UV-selected galaxy sample with ALMA spectroscopic observations. Our analysis is based on the ALMA large program Reionization Era Bright Emission Line Survey (REBELS), which targets 42 galaxies at $\mathrm{z=6.4-7.7}$ with [CII] 158$\micron$ line scans. 16 sources exhibit a dust detection, 15 of which are also spectroscopically confirmed through the [CII] line. The IR luminosities of the sample range from $\log L_{IR}/L_\odot=11.4$ to 12.2. Using the UVLF as a proxy to derive the effective volume for each of our target sources, we derive IRLF estimates, both for detections and for the full sample including IR luminosity upper limits. The resulting IRLFs are well reproduced by a Schechter function with the characteristic luminosity of $\log L_{*}/L_\odot=11.6^{+0.2}_{-0.1}$. Our observational results are in broad agreement with the average of predicted IRLFs from simulations at $z\sim7$. Conversely, our IRLFs lie significantly below lower redshift estimates, suggesting a rapid evolution from $z\sim4$ to $z\sim7$, into the reionization epoch. The inferred obscured contribution to the cosmic star-formation rate density at $z\sim7$ amounts to $\mathrm{log(SFRD/M_{\odot}/yr/Mpc^{3}) = -2.66^{+0.17}_{-0.14} }$ which is at least $\sim$10\% of UV-based estimates. We conclude that the presence of dust is already abundant in the EoR and discuss the possibility of unveiling larger samples of dusty galaxies with future ALMA and JWST observations., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures

The increasing number of distant galaxies observed with ALMA by the ALPINE and REBELS surveys and the early release observations of the JWST promise to revolutionize our understanding of cosmic star formation and the assembly of normal, dusty galaxies. Here we introduce a new suite of cosmological simulations performed with \texttt{dustyGadget} to interpret high-redshift data. We investigate the comoving star formation history, the stellar mass density and a number of galaxy scaling relations such as the galaxy main sequence, the stellar-to-halo mass and dust-to-stellar mass relations at $z > 4$. The predicted star formation rate and total stellar mass density rapidly increase in time with a remarkable agreement with available observations, including recent JWST ERO and DD-ERS data at $z \geq 8$. A well defined galaxy main sequence is found already at $z < 10$ following a non evolving power-law, which - if extrapolated at high-mass end - is in agreement with JWST, REBELS, and ALPINE data. This is consistent with a star formation efficiently sustained by gas accretion and a specific star formation rate increasing with redshift, as established by recent observations. A population of low-mass galaxies ($8 < \rm{Log(M_\star/M_\odot)} < 9$) at $z \leq 6 - 7$ that exceeds some of the current estimates of the stellar mass function is also at the origin of the scatter in the stellar-to-halo mass relation. The phase transition between galaxies and quasars is often identified with the rare population of hyper-luminous, hot dust-obscured galaxies. Galaxy formation models predict these systems to grow via mergers, that can deliver large amounts of gas toward their centers, induce intense bursts of star formation and feed their supermassive black holes. Here we report the detection of 24 galaxies emitting Lyman-alpha emission on projected physical scales of about 400 kpc around the hyper-luminous hot dust-obscured galaxy W0410-0913, at redshift z = 3.631, using Very Large Telescope observations. While this indicates that W0410-0913 evolves in a very dense environment, we do not find clear signs of mergers that could sustain its growth. Data suggest that if mergers occurred, as models expect, these would involve less massive satellites, with only a moderate impact on the internal interstellar medium of W0410-0913, which is sustained by a rotationally-supported fast-rotating molecular disk, as Atacama Large Millimeter Array observations suggest., Comment: 26 pages, 12 figures, 1 table. We present the average [CII] $158\,\rm{\mu m}$ emission line sizes of UV-bright star-forming galaxies at $z\sim7$. Our results are derived from a stacking analysis of [CII] $158\,\rm{\mu m}$ emission lines and dust continua observed by ALMA, taking advantage of the large program Reionization Era Bright Emission Line Survey (REBELS). We find that the average [CII] emission at $z\sim7$ has an effective radius $r_e$ of $2.2\pm0.2\,\rm{kpc}$. It is $\gtrsim2\times$ larger than the dust continuum and the rest-frame UV emission, in agreement with recently reported measurements for $z\lesssim6$ galaxies. Understanding how super-massive black holes form and grow in the early Universe has become a major challenge since the discovery of luminous quasars only 700 million years after the Big Bang. Simulations indicate an evolutionary sequence of dust-reddened quasars emerging from heavily dust-obscured starbursts that then transition to unobscured luminous quasars by expelling gas and dust. Although the last phase has been identified out to a redshift of 7.6, a transitioning quasar has not been found at similar redshifts owing to their faintness at optical and near-infrared wavelengths. Here we report observations of an ultraviolet compact object, GNz7q, associated with a dust-enshrouded starburst at a redshift of z=7.1899+/-0.0005. The host galaxy is more luminous in dust emission than any other known object at this epoch, forming 1,600 solar masses of stars per year within a central radius of 480 parsec. A red point source in the far-ultraviolet is identified in deep, high-resolution imaging and slitless spectroscopy. GNz7q is extremely faint in X-rays, which indicates the emergence of a uniquely ultraviolet compact star-forming region or a Compton-thick super-Eddington black-hole accretion disk at the dusty starburst core. In the latter case, the observed properties are consistent with predictions from cosmological simulations and suggest that GNz7q is an antecedent to unobscured luminous quasars at later epochs., Comment: 49 pages, 15 figures, 2 tables. We include a fully coupled treatment of metal and dust enrichment into the Delphi semi-analytic model of galaxy formation to explain the dust content of 13 Lyman Break Galaxies (LBGs) detected by the Atacama Large millimetre Array (ALMA) REBELS Large Program at $z\simeq 7$. We find that the galaxy dust mass, $M_d$, is regulated by the combination of SNII dust production, astration, shock destruction, and ejection in outflows; grain growth (with a standard timescale $\tau_0= 30$ Myr) plays a negligible role. The model predicts a dust-to-stellar mass ratio of $\sim 0.07-0.1\%$ and a UV-to-total star formation rate relation such that $log (\psi_{\rm UV}) = -0.05 ~[log (\psi)]^{2} + 0.86 ~log(\psi) -0.05$ (implying that 55-80\% of the star formation is obscured) for REBELS galaxies with stellar mass $M_* = 10^{9-10} M_\odot$. This relation reconciles the intrinsic UV luminosity of LBGs with their observed luminosity function at $z=7$. However, 2 out of the 13 systems show dust-to-stellar mass ratios ($\sim 0.94-1.1\%$) that are up to $18\times$ larger than expected from the fiducial relation. Due to the physical coupling between dust and metal enrichment, even decreasing $\tau_0$ to very low values (0.3 Myr) only increases the dust-to-stellar mass ratio by a factor $ \sim 2$. Given that grain growth is not a viable explanation for such high observed ratios of the dust-to-stellar mass, we propose alternative solutions., Comment: Accepted to MNRAS

We analyse FIR dust continuum measurements for 14 galaxies ($z\approx 7$) in the ALMA REBELS LP to derive their physical properties. Our model uses three input data: (a) the UV spectral slope, $\beta$, (b) the observed UV continuum flux at $1500$A, $F_{\rm UV}$, (c) the observed continuum flux at $\approx 158\mu$m, $F_{158}$, and considers Milky Way (MW) and SMC extinction curves, along with different dust geometries. We find that REBELS galaxies have (28-90.5)% of their star formation obscured; the total (UV+IR) star formation rates are in the range $31.5 < {\rm SFR}/ (M_\odot {\rm yr}^{-1}) < 129.5$. The sample-averaged dust mass and temperature are $(1.3\pm 1.1)\times 10^7 M_\odot$ and $52 \pm 11$ K, respectively. In some galaxies dust is abundant (REBELS-14, $M'_d \approx 3.4 \times 10^7 M_\odot$), or hot (REBELS-18, $T'_d \approx 67$ K). The dust distribution is compact ($<0.3$ kpc for 70% of the galaxies). The dust yield per supernova is $0.1 \le y_d/M_\odot \le 3.3$, with 70% of the galaxies requiring $y_d < 0.25 M_\odot$. Three galaxies (REBELS-12, 14, 39) require $y_d > 1 M_\odot$. With the SFR predicted by the model and a MW extinction curve, REBELS galaxies detected in [CII] nicely follow the local $L_{\rm CII}-$SFR relation, and are approximately located on the Kennicutt-Schmidt relation. The sample-averaged gas depletion time is of $0.11\, y_P^{-2}$ Gyr, where $y_P$ is the ratio of the gas-to-stellar distribution radius. For some systems a solution simultaneously matching the observed ($\beta, F_{\rm UV}, F_{158}$) values cannot be found. This occurs when the index $I_m = (F_{158}/F_{\rm UV})/(\beta-\beta_{\rm int})$, where $\beta_{\rm int}$ is the intrinsic UV slope, exceeds $I_m^*\approx 1120$ for a MW curve. For these objects we argue that the FIR and UV emitting regions are not co-spatial, questioning the use of the IRX-$\beta$ relation., Comment: 22 pages, 7 figures, accepted by MNRAS. ALMA observations have revealed the presence of dust in the first generations of galaxies in the Universe. However, the dust temperature $T_d$ remains mostly unconstrained due to the few available FIR continuum data at redshift $z>5$. This introduces large uncertainties in several properties of high-$z$ galaxies, namely their dust masses, infrared luminosities, and obscured fraction of star formation. Using a new method based on simultaneous [CII] 158$\mu$m line and underlying dust continuum measurements, we derive $T_ d$ in the continuum and [CII] detected $z\approx 7$ galaxies in the ALMA Large Project REBELS sample. We find $39\ \mathrm{K} < T_d < 58\ \mathrm{K}$, and dust masses in the narrow range $M_d = (0.9-3.6)\times 10^7 M_{\odot}$. These results allow us to extend for the first time the reported $T_d(z)$ relation into the Epoch of Reionization. We produce a new physical model that explains the increasing $T_ d(z)$ trend with the decrease of gas depletion time, $t_{dep}=M_g/\mathrm{SFR}$, induced by the higher cosmological accretion rate at early times; this hypothesis yields $T_d \propto (1+z)^{0.4}$. The model also explains the observed $T_d$ scatter at a fixed redshift. We find that dust is warmer in obscured sources, as a larger obscuration results in more efficient dust heating. For UV-transparent (obscured) galaxies, $T_d$ only depends on the gas column density (metallicity), $T_d \propto N_H^{1/6}$ ($T_d \propto Z^{-1/6}$). REBELS galaxies are on average relatively transparent, with effective gas column densities around $N_H \simeq (0.03-1)\times 10^{21} \mathrm{cm}^{-2}$. We predict that other high-$z$ galaxies (e.g. MACS0416-Y1, A2744-YD4), with estimated $T_d \gg 60$ K, are significantly obscured, low-metallicity systems. In fact $T_d$ is higher in metal-poor systems due to their smaller dust content, which for fixed $L_{ IR}$ results in warmer temperatures., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

Over the past decades, rest-frame ultraviolet (UV) observations have provided large samples of UV luminous galaxies at redshift (z) greater than 6, during the so-called epoch of reionization. While a few of these UV identified galaxies revealed significant dust reservoirs, very heavily dust-obscured sources at these early times have remained elusive. They are limited to a rare population of extreme starburst galaxies, and companions of rare quasars. These studies conclude that the contribution of dust-obscured galaxies to the cosmic star formation rate density at $z>6$ is sub-dominant. Recent ALMA and Spitzer observations have identified a more abundant, less extreme population of obscured galaxies at $z=3-6$. However, this population has not been confirmed in the reionization epoch so far. Here, we report the discovery of two dust-obscured star forming galaxies at $z=6.6813\pm0.0005$ and $z=7.3521\pm0.0005$. These objects are not detected in existing rest-frame UV data, and were only discovered through their far-infrared [CII] lines and dust continuum emission as companions to typical UV-luminous galaxies at the same redshift. The two galaxies exhibit lower infrared luminosities and star-formation rates than extreme starbursts, in line with typical star-forming galaxies at $z\sim7$. The Reionization Era Bright Emission Line Survey (REBELS) is a cycle-7 ALMA Large Program (LP) that is identifying and performing a first characterization of many of the most luminous star-forming galaxies known in the z>6.5 universe. REBELS is providing this probe by systematically scanning 40 of the brightest UV-selected galaxies identified over a 7-deg**2 area for bright 158-micron [CII] and 88-micron [OIII] lines and dust-continuum emission. Selection of the 40 REBELS targets was done by combining our own and other photometric selections, each of which is subject to extensive vetting using three completely independent sets of photometry and template-fitting codes. Building on the observational strategy deployed in two pilot programs, we are increasing the number of massive interstellar medium (ISM) reservoirs known at z>6.5 by ~4-5x to >30. In this manuscript, we motivate the observational strategy deployed in the REBELS program and present initial results. Based on the 60.6 hours of ALMA observations taken in the first year of the program (November 2019 to January 2020), 18 highly significant >~7sigma [CII] lines have already been discovered, the bulk of which (13/18) also show >~3.3 sigma dust-continuum emission. These newly discovered lines more than triple the number of bright ISM-cooling lines known in the z>6.5 universe, such that the number of ALMA-derived redshifts at z>6.5 already rival Lya redshift discoveries. An analysis of the completeness of our search results vs. star formation rate (SFR) suggests an ~79% efficiency in scanning for [CII] when the SFR(UV+IR) is in excess of 28 M_sol/yr. Observations of hyper-luminous quasars at $z>6$ reveal the rapid growth of supermassive black holes (SMBHs $>10^9 \rm M_{\odot}$) whose origin is still difficult to explain. Their progenitors may have formed as remnants of massive, metal free stars (light seeds), via stellar collisions (medium-weight seeds) and/or massive gas clouds direct collapse (heavy seeds). In this work we investigate for the first time the relative role of these three seed populations in the formation of $z>6$ SMBHs within an Eddington-limited gas accretion scenario. To this aim, we implement in our semi-analytical data-constrained model a statistical description of the spatial fluctuations of Lyman-Werner (LW) photo-dissociating radiation and of metal/dust enrichment. This allows us to set the physical conditions for BH seeds formation, exploring their relative birth rate in a highly biased region of the Universe at $z>6$. We find that the inclusion of medium-weight seeds does not qualitatively change the growth history of the first SMBHs: although less massive seeds ($<10^3 \rm M_\odot$) form at a higher rate, the mass growth of a $\sim 10^9 \rm M_\odot$ SMBH at $z<15$ is driven by efficient gas accretion (at a sub-Eddington rate) onto its heavy progenitors ($10^5 \rm M_\odot$). This conclusion holds independently of the critical level of LW radiation and even when medium-weight seeds are allowed to form in higher metallicity galaxies, via the so-called super-competitive accretion scenario. Our study suggests that the genealogy of $z \sim 6$ SMBHs is characterized by a rich variety of BH progenitors, which represent only a small fraction ($< 10 - 20\%$) of all the BHs that seed galaxies at $z > 15$., Comment: (21 pages, 18 figures, 2 tables. Assessments of the cold-gas reservoir in galaxies are a cornerstone for understanding star-formation processes and the role of feedback and baryonic cycling in galaxy evolution. Here we exploit a sample of 392 galaxies (dubbed MAGMA, Metallicity and Gas for Mass Assembly), presented in a recent paper, to quantify molecular and atomic gas properties across a broad range in stellar mass, Mstar, from $\sim 10^7 - 10^{11}$ Msun. First, we find the metallicity ($Z$) dependence of alpha_CO to be shallower than previous estimates, with alpha_CO$\propto (Z/Z_\odot)^{-1.55}$. Second, molecular gas mass MH2 is found to be strongly correlated with Mstar and star-formation rate (SFR), enabling predictions of MH2 good to within $\sim$0.2 dex. The behavior of atomic gas mass MHI in MAGMA scaling relations suggests that it may be a third, independent variable that encapsulates information about the circumgalactic environment and gas accretion. If Mgas is considered to depend on MHI, together with Mstar and SFR, we obtain a relation that predicts Mgas to within $\sim$0.05 dex. Finally, the analysis of depletion times and the scaling of MHI/Mstar and MH2/Mstar over three different mass bins suggests that the partition of gas and the regulation of star formation through gas content depends on the mass regime. Dwarf galaxies tend to be overwhelmed by (HI) accretion, while for galaxies in the intermediate Mstar "gas-equilibrium" bin, star formation proceeds apace with gas availability. In the most massive "gas-poor, bimodality" galaxies, HI does not apparently participate in star formation, although it generally dominates in mass over H2. Our results confirm that atomic gas plays a key role in baryonic cycling, and is a fundamental ingredient for current and future star formation, especially in dwarf galaxies. Iridate oxides display exotic physical properties that arise from the interplay between a large spin-orbit coupling and electron correlations. Here, we present a comprehensive study of the effects of hydrostatic pressure on the electronic transport properties of SrIrO3 (SIO), a system that has recently attracted a lot of attention as potential correlated Dirac semimetal. Our investigations on untwinned thin films of SIO reveal that the electrical resistivity of this material is intrinsically anisotropic and controlled by the orthorhombic distortion of the perovskite unit cell. These effects provide another evidence for the strong coupling between the electronic and lattice degrees of freedom in this class of compounds. Upon increasing pressure, a systematic increase of the transport anisotropies is observed. The anomalous pressure-induced changes of the resistivity cannot be accounted for by the pressure dependence of the density of the electron charge carriers, as inferred from Hall effect measurements. Moreover, pressure-induced rotations of the IrO6 octahedra likely occur within the distorted perovskite unit cell and affect electron mobility of this system.

The existence of massive stellar black hole binaries (MBHBs), with primary black hole (BH) masses $\ge 31 \, M_\odot$, was proven by the detection of the gravitational wave (GW) event GW150914 during the first LIGO/Virgo observing run (O1), and successively confirmed by seven additional GW signals discovered in the O1 and O2 data. By adopting the galaxy formation model \texttt{GAMESH} coupled with binary population synthesis (BPS) calculations, here we investigate the origin of these MBHBs by selecting simulated binaries compatible in mass and coalescence redshifts. We find that their cosmic birth rates peak in the redshift range $6.5 \leq z \leq 10$, regardless of the adopted BPS. These MBHBs are then old systems forming in low-metallicity ($Z \sim [0.01-0.1] \, Z_{\odot}$), low-stellar-mass galaxies, before the end of cosmic reionization, i.e. significantly beyond the peak of cosmic star formation. GW signals generated by coalescing MBHBs open up new possibilities to probe the nature of stellar populations in remote galaxies, at present too faint to be detected by available electromagnetic facilities., Comment: MNRAS Letters, in press

We explore X-ray emission from a sample of 18 He II 1640 emitting star-forming galaxies at z ~ 2.3-3.6 from the VANDELS survey in the Chandra Deep Field South, to set constraints on the role of X-ray sources in powering the He II emission. We find that 4 He II emitters have tentative detections with S/N ~ 2 and have X-ray luminosities, L_X = 1.5-4.9 x 10^41 erg/s. The stacked luminosity of all 18 He II emitters is 2.6 x 10^41 erg/s, and that of a subset of 13 narrow He II emitters (FHWM(He II) < 1000 km/s) is 3.1 x 10^41 erg/s. We also measure stacked L_X for non-He II emitters through bootstrapping of matched samples, and find L_X = 2.5 x 10^41 erg/s, which is not significantly different from L_X measured for He II emitters. The L_X per star-formation rate for He II emitters (log (L_X/SFR) ~ 40.0) and non-emitters (log (L_X/SFR) ~ 39.9) are also comparable and in line with the redshift evolution and metallicity dependence predicted by models. Due to the non-significant difference between the X-ray emission from galaxies with and without He II, we conclude that X-ray binaries or weak or obscured AGNs are unlikely to be the dominant producers of He II ionising photons in VANDELS star-forming galaxies at z ~ 3. Given the comparable physical properties of both He II emitters and non-emitters reported previously, alternative He II ionising mechanisms such as localised low-metallicity stellar populations, Pop-III stars, etc. may need to be explored., Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

The AGN bolometric correction is a key element to understand BH demographics and compute accurate BH accretion histories from AGN luminosities. However, current estimates still differ from each other by up to a factor of two to three, and rely on extrapolations at the lowest and highest luminosities. Here we revisit this fundamental issue presenting general hard X-ray ($K_{X}$) and optical ($K_{O}$) bolometric corrections, computed combining several AGN samples spanning the widest (about 7 dex) luminosity range ever used for this kind of studies. We analysed a total of $\sim 1000$ type 1 and type 2 AGN for which a dedicated SED-fitting has been carried out. We provide a bolometric correction separately for type 1 and type 2 AGN; the two bolometric corrections results to be in agreement in the overlapping luminosity range and therefore, for the first time, a universal bolometric correction for the whole AGN sample (both type 1 and type 2) has been computed. We found that $K_{X}$ is fairly constant at $log(L_{BOL}/L_{\odot}) < 11$, while it increases up to about one order of magnitude at $log(L_{BOL}/L_{\odot}) \sim 14.5$. A similar increasing trend has been observed when its dependence on either the Eddington ratio or the BH mass is considered, while no dependence on redshift up to $z\sim3.5$ has been found. On the contrary, the optical bolometric correction appears to be fairly constant (i.e. $K_{O} \sim 5$) whatever is the independent variable. We also verified that our bolometric corrections correctly predict the AGN bolometric luminosity functions. Epitaxial perovskite (110) oriented SrIrO3 (SIO) thin films were grown by pulsed laser deposition on (110) oriented DyScO3 (DSO) substrates with various film thickness t (2 nm < t < 50 nm). All the films were produced with stoichiometric composition, orthorhombic phase, and with high crystallinity. The nearly perfect in-plane lattice matching of DSO with respect to SIO and same symmetry result in a full epitaxial inplane alignment, i.e., the c-axis of DSO and SIO are parallel to each other with only slightly enlarged d110 out-of-plane lattice spacing (+0.38%) due to the small in-plane compressive strain caused by the DSO substrate. Measurements of the magnetoresistance MR were carried out for current flow along the [001] and [1-10] direction of SIO and magnetic field perpendicular to the film plane. MR appears to be distinctly different for both directions. The anisotropy MR001/MR1-10 > 1 increases with decreasing T and is especially pronounced for the thinnest films, which likewise display a hysteretic field dependence below T* ~ 3 K. The coercive field Hc amounts to 2-5 T. Both, T* and Hc are very similar to the magnetic ordering temperature and coercivity of DSO which strongly suggests substrate-induced mechanism as a reason for the anisotropic magnetotransport in the SIO films.

Strong He II emission is produced by low-metallicity stellar populations. Here, we aim to identify and study a sample of He II $\lambda 1640$-emitting galaxies at redshifts of $z \sim 2.5-5$ in the deep VANDELS spectroscopic survey.. We identified a total of 33 Bright He II emitters (S/N > 2.5) and 17 Faint emitters (S/N < 2.5) in the VANDELS survey and used the available deep multi-wavelength data to study their physical properties. After identifying seven potential AGNs in our sample and discarding them from further analysis, we divided the sample of \emph{Bright} emitters into 20 \emph{Narrow} (FWHM < 1000 km s$^{-1}$) and 6 \emph{Broad} (FWHM > 1000 km s$^{-1}$) He II emitters. We created stacks of Faint, Narrow, and Broad emitters and measured other rest-frame UV lines such as O III] and C III] in both individual galaxies and stacks. We then compared the UV line ratios with the output of stellar population-synthesis models to study the ionising properties of He II emitters. We do not see a significant difference between the stellar masses, star-formation rates, and rest-frame UV magnitudes of galaxies with He II and no He II emission. The stellar population models reproduce the observed UV line ratios from metals in a consistent manner, however they under-predict the total number of \heii ionising photons, confirming earlier studies and suggesting that additional mechanisms capable of producing He II are needed, such as X-ray binaries or stripped stars. The models favour subsolar metallicities ($\sim0.1Z_\odot$) and young stellar ages ($10^6 - 10^7$ years) for the He II emitters. However, the metallicity measured for He II emitters is comparable to that of non-He II emitters at similar redshifts. The structural and nanochemical properties of thin $AlO_x$ layers are decisive for the performance of advanced electronic devices. For example, they are frequently used as tunnel barriers in Josephson junction-based superconducting devices. However, systematic studies of the influence of oxidation parameters on structural and nanochemical properties are rare up to now, as most studies focus on the electrical properties of $AlO_x$ layers. This study aims to close this gap by applying transmission electron microscopy in combination with electron energy loss spectroscopy to analyze the structural and nanochemical properties of differently fabricated $AlO_x$ layers and correlate them with fabrication parameters. With respect to the application of $AlO_x$ as tunnel barrier in superconducting Josephson junctions, $Al/AlO_x/Al$-layer systems were deposited on Si substrates. We will show that the oxygen content and structure of amorphous $AlO_x$ layers is strongly dependent on the fabrication process and oxidation parameters. Dynamic and static oxidation of Al yields oxygen-deficient amorphous $AlO_x$ layers, where the oxygen content ranges from x = 0.5 to x = 1.3 depending on oxygen pressure and substrate temperature. Thicker layers of stoichiometric crystalline $\gamma-Al_2O_3$ layers were grown by electron-beam evaporation of $Al_2O_3$ and reactive sputter deposition.

The recent discovery of high redshift dusty galaxies implies a rapid dust enrichment of their interstellar medium (ISM). To interpret these observations, we run a cosmological simulation in a 30$h^{-1}$ cMpc/size volume down to $z \approx 4$. We use the hydrodynamical code dustyGadget, which accounts for the production of dust by stellar populations and its evolution in the ISM. We find that the cosmic dust density parameter ($\Omega_{\rm d}$) is mainly driven by stellar dust at $z \gtrsim 10$, so that mass- and metallicity-dependent yields are required to assess the dust content in the first galaxies. At $z \lesssim 9$ the growth of grains in the ISM of evolved systems (Log$(M_{\star}/M_{\odot})>8.5$) significantly increases their dust mass, in agreement with observations in the redshift range $4 \lesssim z < 8$. Our simulation shows that the variety of high redshift galaxies observed with ALMA can naturally be accounted for by modeling the grain-growth timescale as a function of the physical conditions in the gas cold phase. In addition, the trends of dust-to-metal (DTM) and dust-to-gas (${\cal D}$) ratios are compatible with the available data. A qualitative investigation of the inhomogeneous dust distribution in a representative massive halo at $z \approx 4$ shows that dust is found from the central galaxy up to the closest satellites along polluted filaments with $\rm Log({\cal D}) \leq -2.4$, but sharply declines at distances $d \gtrsim 30$ kpc along many lines of sight, where $\rm Log({\cal D}) \lesssim -4.0$., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

The spin-orbit coupling and electron correlation in perovskite SrIrO3 (SIO) strongly favor new quantum states and make SIO very attractive for next generation quantum information technology. In addition, the small electronic band-width offers the possibility to manipulate anisotropic electronic transport by strain. However, twinned film growth of SIO often masks electronic anisotropy which could be very useful for device applications. We demonstrate that the twinning of SIO films on (001) oriented SrTiO3 (STO) substrates can be strongly reduced for thin films with thickness t less than 30 nm by using substrates displaying a TiO2-terminated surface with step-edge alignment parallel to the a- or b-axis direction of the substrate. This allows us to study electronic anisotropy of strained SIO films which hitherto has been reported only for bulk-like SIO. For films with t < 30 nm electronic anisotropy increases with increasing t and becomes even twice as large compared to nearly strain-free films grown on (110) DyScO3. The experiments demonstrate the high sensitivity of electronic transport towards structural distortion and the possibility to manipulate transport by substrate engineering.

The low-frequency rotating plasma instability (spoke) in the ISCT200 thruster operating in the wall-less configuration was simulated with a 3 dimensional PIC MCC code. In the simulations an m = 1 spoke rotating with a velocity of 6.5 km/s in the ExB direction was observed. The rotating electron density structure in the spoke is accompanied by a strongly depleted region of the neutral gas, which clearly shows that the spoke instability is of an ionization nature, similar to the axial breathing mode oscillations. In the simulation the electron cross-field transport through the spoke core was caused by diffusion in the high-frequency (4-10 MHz), short-scale (3 mm) electric field oscillations. These short-scale oscillations play a crucial role in the thruster discharge as over 70% of the electron current to the anode originates from the spoke core. The rest of the current originates from the spoke front where the electron cross-field transport toward the anode is due to the ExB drift in the spoke macroscopic azimuthal electric field., Comment: Submitted to Plasma Sources Sci.
