Abstract

We report on the chemical and electronic structure of the interface between a thermally co-evaporated InxSy buffer and a Cu2ZnSn(S,Se)4 (CZTSSe) absorber for thin-film solar cells. To date, such cells have achieved energy conversion efficiencies up to 8.6%. Using surface-sensitive X-ray and UV photoelectron spectroscopy, combined with inverse photoemission and bulk-sensitive soft X-ray emission spectroscopy, we find a complex character of the buffer layer. It includes oxygen, as well as selenium and copper that diffused from the absorber into the InxSy buffer, exhibits an electronic band gap of 2.50 ± 0.18 eV at the surface, and leads to a small cliff in the conduction band alignment at the InxSy/CZTSSe interface. After an efficiency-increasing annealing step at 180 °C in nitrogen atmosphere, additional selenium diffusion leads to a reduced band gap at the buffer layer surface (2.28 ± 0.18 eV).

Abstract

noindent Henry's law constants of the solutes methane, nitrogen, oxygen and carbon dioxide in the solvent ethanol are predicted by molecular simulation. The molecular models for the solutes are taken from previous work. For the solvent ethanol, a new rigid anisotropic united atom molecular model based on Lennard-Jones and Coulombic interactions is developed. It is adjusted to experimental pure component saturated liquid density and vapor pressure data. Henry's law constants are calculated by evaluating the infinite dilution residual chemical potentials of the solutes from 273 to 498K with Widom's test particle insertion. The prediction of Henry's Law constants without the use of binary experimental data on the basis of the Lorentz-Berthelot combining rule agree well with experimental data, deviations are 20%, except for carbon dioxide for which deviations of 70% are reached. Quantitative agreement is achieved by using the modified Lorentz-Berthelot combining rule which is adjusted to one experimental mixture data point.

5. Unlike Lennard-Jones Parameters for Vapor-Liquid Equilibria

Abstract

The influence of the unlike Lennard-Jones (LJ) parameters on vapor-liquid equilibria of mixtures is investigated and the performance of eleven combining rules is assessed. In the first part of the work, the influence of the unlike LJ size and energy parameter on vapor pressure, bubble density and dew point composition is systematically studied for the mixtures CO+$\rm C_2H_6$ and $\rm N_2$ + $\rm C_3H_6$, respectively. It is found that mixture vapor pressure depends strongly both on the size and the energy parameter whereas the bubble density depends mostly on the size parameter and the dew point composition is rather insensitive to both parameters. In preceding work, unlike LJ parameters were adjusted to experimental binary vapor-liquid equilibria for 44 real mixtures. On the basis of these results, in the second part of the work eleven combining rules are assessed regarding their predictive power. A comparison with the adjusted unlike LJ parameters determined from the fit shows that none of the eleven combining rules yields appropriate parameters in general. To obtain an accurate mixture model, the unlike dispersive interaction should therefore be adjusted to experimental binary data. The results from the present work indicate that it is sufficient to use the Lorenz rule for the unlike LJ size parameter and to fit the unlike LJ energy parameter to the vapor pressure.

Abstract

Norway spruce was impregnated with a eutectic mixture of capric acid and stearic acid. The binary fatty acid was used as a bio-based phase-change material (PCM) for further applications with wood as a latent heat-storage material in building components. For this purpose, different concentrations of impregnation were evaluated. The weight-percentage gain of 124% was the highest for the pure fatty acid mixture, and the PCM-impregnated wood increased density from 470 kg/m3 (untreated wood) to 1045 kg/m3. Compressive strength and hardness were significantly elevated with higher content of fatty acids in the wood. Microscopy analysis confirmed the presence of the PCM within the wood cells. The treated wood also exhibited a larger time delay during heating and cooling due to the temperature shift in the phase transition. Depending on the concentration of the fatty acid in the wood, the latent heat during melting ranged from 50 to 125 J/g in the temperature from about 24oC to 30oC. These results suggest that the use of the capric acid and stearic acid mixture has a great potential to increase the heat-storage capacity of wood and reduce energy consumption for heating and cooling indoor spaces., info:eu-repo/semantics/openAccess

Abstract

Background and purpose Prospectively collected data comparing the safety and effectiveness of individual non-vitamin K antagonists (NOACs) are lacking. Our objective was to directly compare the effectiveness and safety of NOACs in patients with newly diagnosed atrial fibrillation (AF). Methods In GLORIA-AF, a large, prospective, global registry program, consecutive patients with newly diagnosed AF were followed for 3 years. The comparative analyses for (1) dabigatran vs rivaroxaban or apixaban and (2) rivaroxaban vs apixaban were performed on propensity score (PS)-matched patient sets. Proportional hazards regression was used to estimate hazard ratios (HRs) for outcomes of interest. Results The GLORIA-AF Phase III registry enrolled 21,300 patients between January 2014 and December 2016. Of these, 3839 were prescribed dabigatran, 4015 rivaroxaban and 4505 apixaban, with median ages of 71.0, 71.0, and 73.0 years, respectively. In the PS-matched set, the adjusted HRs and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for dabigatran vs rivaroxaban were, for stroke: 1.27 (0.79–2.03), major bleeding 0.59 (0.40–0.88), myocardial infarction 0.68 (0.40–1.16), and all-cause death 0.86 (0.67–1.10). For the comparison of dabigatran vs apixaban, in the PS-matched set, the adjusted HRs were, for stroke 1.16 (0.76–1.78), myocardial infarction 0.84 (0.48–1.46), major bleeding 0.98 (0.63–1.52) and all-cause death 1.01 (0.79–1.29). For the comparison of rivaroxaban vs apixaban, in the PS-matched set, the adjusted HRs were, for stroke 0.78 (0.52–1.19), myocardial infarction 0.96 (0.63–1.45), major bleeding 1.54 (1.14–2.08), and all-cause death 0.97 (0.80–1.19). Conclusions Patients treated with dabigatran had a 41% lower risk of major bleeding compared with rivaroxaban, but similar risks of stroke, MI, and death. Relative to apixaban, patients treated with dabigatran had similar risks of stroke, major bleeding, MI, and death. Abstract

Solid wood can serve multi-functionality for energy savings in buildings. The study reveals the results of bio-deterioration and degradation of solid Scots pine wood used to incorporate single or multicomponent fatty acid mixtures as bio-based phase change materials (BPCMs). The sapwood samples were impregnated with capric acid (CA), methyl palmitate (MP), lauryl alcohol (LA) and a mixture of coconut oil fatty acids and linoleic acid (CoFA-LA). The samples were tested against subterranean termites by an Italian species (Reticulitermes lucifugus), the wood boring beetle Hylotrupes bajulus and mould through a discoloration test. Tested against termites, the impregnated samples were significantly less susceptible to the attack than the controls, i.e. the tested BPCMs were resistant to R. lucifugus. The only test with MP terminated at the moment against H. bajulus showed positive results with no larvae survived. The mould discoloration test revealed that the wood impregnated with CoFA-LA was identically susceptible to mould discoloration when compared to the control, non-impregnated samples. This pioneer study verifies that solid wood employed for encapsulation of BPCMs for building purposes can serve identically or somewhat better than similar wooden building elements regarding attacks of the above microorganisms and insects. Such multifunctional building elements will be tested further in a pilot scale building to characterize better the durability aspects of the new materials.

Abstract

Aim: The SAMe-TT2R2 score helps identify patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) likely to have poor anticoagulation control during anticoagulation with vitamin K antagonists (VKA) and those with scores >2 might be better managed with a target-specific oral anticoagulant (NOAC). We hypothesized that in clinical practice, VKAs may be prescribed less frequently to patients with AF and SAMe-TT2R2 scores >2 than to patients with lower scores. Methods and results: We analyzed the Phase III dataset of the Global Registry on Long-Term Oral Antithrombotic Treatment in Patients with Atrial Fibrillation (GLORIA-AF), a large, global, prospective global registry of patients with newly diagnosed AF and ≥1 stroke risk factor. We compared baseline clinical characteristics and antithrombotic prescriptions to determine the probability of the VKA prescription among anticoagulated patients with the baseline SAMe-TT2R2 score >2 and ≤ 2. Among 17,465 anticoagulated patients with AF, 4,828 (27.6%) patients were prescribed VKA and 12,637 (72.4%) patients an NOAC: 11,884 (68.0%) patients had SAMe-TT2R2 scores 0-2 and 5,581 (32.0%) patients had scores >2. The proportion of patients prescribed VKA was 28.0% among patients with SAMe-TT2R2 scores >2 and 27.5% in those with scores ≤2. Conclusions: The lack of a clear association between the SAMe-TT2R2 score and anticoagulant selection may be attributed to the relative efficacy and safety profiles between NOACs and VKAs as well as to the absence of trial evidence that an SAMe-TT2R2-guided strategy for the selection of the type of anticoagulation in NVAF patients has an impact on clinical outcomes of efficacy and safety. The latter hypothesis is currently being tested in a randomized controlled trial. 38th European Photovoltaic Solar Energy Conference and Exhibition; 462-466, We investigated the potential of reducing the thickness of solution grown CdS buffer in Cu(In,Ga)Se2–based solar cells by substitution of the adjacent radio frequency sputtered i-ZnO high resistive layer with an atomic layer deposited Zn1-xMgxO layer. Typically, the standard CdS thickness is about 50 nm combined with a 50-80 nm sputtered i-ZnO layer. Former investigations showed a significant decrease of the device performance by reducing the CdS thickness below 30 nm. We deposited the Zn1-xMgxO layer in a standard thermal as well as in a plasma-assisted mode. We compared both processes by varying the Zn/Mg-pulse ratios and the layer thicknesses. We realized best results with a reduced CdS thickness down to 5 nm when combined with 10-30 nm Zn1-xMgxO with 0.15 ≤ x ≤ 0.3 without efficiency loss compared to reference cell with standard CdS thickness. The cells showed no or very low cold light soak (CLS) effect. A maximum cell efficiency of 18.5 % (VOC = 727 mV, FF = 78.0 %, JSC = 32.7 mA/cm², 10 min CLS) could be achieved comparable to reference cells of 18.6 % efficiency (VOC = 741 mV, FF = 79.9 %, JSC = 31.4 mA/cm²).

Abstract

Article Raw materials of annual plants fibres are not easily usable for industrial production applications. Pre-treatment of the annual plant fibres is necessary to increase the homogeneity of the material and to improve the material properties. This study deals with the influence of steam explosion treatment on the quality of annual plant fibres used as insulating material. Maize and wheat straw were selected for production of insulating panels. To clarify the changes within the structure of the plants due to the pre-treatment process material analysis was carried out using FT-IR spectroscopy and raster electron microscope. Furthermore, the bulk density and the thermal conductivity were analysed as important values for insulating materials. The results showed that the pre-treatment process homogenizes the materials and the processes could be used for the production of bulk insulation.

Abstract

This study deals with the influence of electron beam irradiation (EBI) on the wettability of Norway spruce surface samples. To evaluate this possible effect in detail, the changes in chemistry and wood structure were analysed using the methods of IR spectroscopy and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). The surface wettability was determined by the contact angle measurement method. The results of infrared spectra show decreased relative numbers of available hydrophilic groups (e.g. hydroxyl and carbonyl groups) in the wood surfaces due to the electron beam irradiation. This behaviour is consistent with the values from the surface wettability measurements. Structural differences of the wood surfaces after electron beam irradiation were not detectable. Based on these findings pre-treatment of wood surfaces for industrial usages can be a potential field of application of this technology. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The TNM classification system of tumor stage does not always reflect the actual tumor mass present at diagnosis. This study aimed at evaluating the prognostic value of volumetric data regarding survival in head and neck cancer patients being treated with either cisplatin or carboplatin administered concomitantly with radiotherapy. Patients and Methods: We retrospectively analyzed 107 patients suffering from squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck in a Greek-German cooperational study (see Table 1). All patients were treated by radiotherapy and concomitant chemotherapy. 65 patients received chemotherapy with carboplatin and 42 with cisplatin. More than 6,200 CT scans were analyzed by digitalization of contours which subsequently led to the computation of the tumor volume (primary and macroscopic lymph node metastases). Results: Median follow-up was 43 months and median survival 30 months. Median initial tumor volume was 32.5 ml (range 2.1–220.1 ml) in the carboplatin and 44.4 ml (range 3.2–202.5 ml) in the cisplatin group (see Figure 1). After treatment, tumor volumes did not differ significantly (median of 3.1 ml [range 0.0–167.1 ml] and 3.5 ml [range 0.0–166.0 ml], respectively). 41 patients (63.1%) died in the carboplatin group and 22 patients (52.4%) in the cisplatin group (see Figure 2). Pretherapeutic tumor volume was prognostic with respect to survival while TNM classification and age were not. Pretherapeutic tumor volume was negatively and percent decrease in tumor volume positively associated with survival (see Tables 2 and 3). Conclusion: Knowledge of the initial tumor volume adds valuable information in terms of prognosis. Initial tumor volume should be included in all future clinical trials regarding head and neck cancer patients.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate whether the intelligence quotient (IQ) in children treated for leukemia decreases in the years following whole brain irradiation. Twenty-seven leukemic children were assessed following a mean time lapse between radiotherapy and IQ measurement of 9 years. The IQ test used was the Hamburg Weschsler Intelligence Test for Adults. The IQ results did not differ significantly, p > 0.05, from the IQs of the general population. It was found that age and dose were not predictors of a decrease in IQ. The only predictor was time lapse between irradiation and IQ measurement, which we found to be indicative of an IQ decrease even after 9 years. Time lapse between irradiation is a useful predictor of IQ.

Abstract

To report the therapeutic results obtained with CT-guided interstitial high-dose-rate brachytherapy (HDR-BRT) as exclusive treatment for recurrent neck metastases of head-and-neck tumors.Between 1995 and 1999, 49 patients with prior radiation therapy (RT) with or without surgery for primary head-and-neck tumors were treated for recurrent neck metastases located within previously irradiated volumes. All patients had fixed lymphadenopathy with a mean tumor volume of 96 cm(3) (range, 15-452 cm(3)). There were 38 males and eleven females with a mean age of 60 years (range, 28-79 years). All patients had previously received RT as primary or adjuvant treatment with a mean dose of 54 Gy (range, 45-80 Gy). 36 patients (73%) underwent surgery, and 26 (53%) received adjuvant or palliative chemotherapy. The accelerated hyperfractionated interstitial HDR-BRT (2 x 3.0 Gy/day) delivered 30 Gy in 37/49 (75%) and 36 Gy in 12/49 implants (25%).At a minimum 6-week follow-up, the response rate was 83% (41/49) with complete remission in 20% (10/49) and partial remission in 63% (31/49) of the implanted tumor sites. 8/49 patients (17%) did not respond to the treatment. After 19 months of median follow-up, the local control rate was 69% and a total of 15/49 patients (30%) experienced local disease progression. Of these, nine (18%) had locoregional progression and six (12%) progression within the treated volume. The median post-BRT survival was 14 months. The overall survival rate was 52% at 1 year, 31% at 2 years, and 6% at 3 years.In patients with recurrent cervical lymphadenopathy of head-and-neck tumors, exclusive interstitial HDR-BRT can provide palliation and tumor control.
