Guiding mechanisms are among the most elementary components of MEMS. Usually, a spring is required to be compliant in only one direction and stiff in all other directions. We introduce triangular springs with a preset tilting angle. The tilting angle lowers the reaction force and implements a constant reaction force. We show the influence of the tilting angle on the reaction force, on the spring stiffness and spring selectivity. Furthermore, we investigate the influence of the different spring geometry parameters on the spring reaction force. We experimentally show tilted triangular springs exhibiting constant force reactions in a large deflection range and a comb-drive actuator guided by tilted triangular springs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Monday morning session started with the awarding of the Clifford G. Shull Prize in Neutron Scattering to Dan A. Neumann (NIST) "for outstanding contributions, leadership, and vision to the neutron scattering community as scientist, mentor, instrument developer, and facility steward" (Figure 1). The meeting, organized by the Neutron Scattering Society of America (NSSA), was led by Conference Chair and NSSA Vice President Peter Gehring (National Institute of Standards and Technology [NIST]) and NSSA President Young Lee (Stanford University) together with the Local Committee Co-chairs Steven DeCaluwe (Colorado School of Mines) and Dmitry Reznik (University of Colorado). The recipients were Paul Butler "for service to the neutron scattering community through his leadership and development of scientific software for small-angle scattering", Simon Billinge "for service to the neutron scattering community through his leadership and development of scientific software for total scattering experiments", Brent Fultz "for service to the neutron scattering community through his leadership and development of scientific software and instrumentation for inelastic scattering", and William D. In this paper we introduce the concept, modelling and analysis of triangular and sinusoidal springs intended for large in-plane translational displacements for MEMS-guiding applications. The proposed spring systems combine the advantages of minimal space requirement, low stiffness in the axial direction and high mechanical resistance in off-axis directions. An analytical model for the description of the force-displacement characteristic of triangular springs is derived considering typical mechanical constraints. Based on the model, geometrical parameters of the springs influencing linearity and selectivity with respect to the in- and off-axis stiffness are analyzed. Using small angle neutron scattering, the anisotropy of the magnetic vortex lattice (VL), in the heavily hole-doped pnictide superconductor KFe2As2, was studied. Well-ordered VL scattering patterns were measured with fields applied in directions between B∥c and the basal plane, rotating either towards [100] or [110]. Slightly distorted hexagonal patterns were observed when B∥c. However, the scattering pattern distorted more strongly as the field was rotated away from the c axis. At low field, the arrangement of vortices is affected by the anisotropy of penetration depth in the plane perpendicular to the field. By fitting the distortion with the anisotropic London model, we obtain an estimate of ~3.4 for the anisotropy factor γ between the in-plane and c-axis penetration depths at the lowest temperature studied. This study examined beliefs about power-related gender traits among 73 early adolescents in middle school (M age=12.5), 84 late adolescents in high school (M age=16.1), and 111 young adults in college (M age=20.9). Males believed that men had more dominant traits than female participants, and females thought that women had more submissive traits than male participants. Older participants perceived more gender differentiation for these traits than younger participants. Youths believed most strongly in social explanations for differences, followed by biological and religious explanations, although there were age and sex differences in responses. Findings suggest that religious and biological attributions decrease between early adolescence and adulthood for both males and females, but that social attributions increase for females only. Religious attributions were linked to traditional attitudes towards women, social attributions were linked to egalitarian attitudes, while biological attributions were linked to traditional attitudes for males only. Background and Objectives: A quantitative evaluation of the PK of meropenem, a broad-spectrum β-lactam antibiotic, in plasma and interstitial space fluid (ISF) of subcutaneous adipose tissue of obese patients is lacking as of date. The objective of this study was the characterisation of meropenem population pharmacokinetics in plasma and ISF in obese and non-obese patients for identification of adequate dosing regimens via Monte-Carlo simulations. Methods: We obtained plasma and microdialysate concentrations after administration of meropenem 1000 mg to 15 obese and 15 non-obese surgery patients from a prospective clinical trial. After characterizing plasma- and microdialysis-derived ISF pharmacokinetics via population pharmacokinetic analysis, we simulated thrice-daily (TID) meropenem short-term (0.5 h), prolonged (3.0 h), and continuous infusions. Adequacy of therapy was assessed by the probability of pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic (PK/PD) target attainment (PTA) analysis based on time unbound concentrations exceeded minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) on treatment day 1 (%fT > MIC) and the sum of PTA weighted by relative frequency of MIC values for infections by pathogens commonly treated with meropenem. To avoid interstitial tissue fluid concentrations below MIC for the entire dosing interval during continuous infusions, a more conservative PK/PD index was selected (%fT > 4 × MIC). Results: Adjusted body weight (ABW) and calculated creatinine clearance (CLCRCG_ABW) of all patients (body mass index [BMI] = 20.5–81.5 kg/m2) explained a considerable proportion of the between-patient pharmacokinetic variability (15.1–31.0% relative reduction). The ISF:plasma ratio of %fT > MIC was relatively similar for MIC ≤ 2 mg/L but decreased for MIC = 8 mg/L over ABW = 60–120 kg (0.50–0.20). Steady-state concentrations were 2.68 times (95% confidence interval [CI] = 2.11–3.37) higher in plasma than in ISF, supporting PK/PD targets related to four times the MIC during continuous infusions to avoid suspected ISF concentrations constantly below the MIC. A 3000 mg/24 h continuous infusion was sufficient at MIC = 2 mg/L for patients with CLCRCG_ABW ≤ 100 mL/min and ABW < 90 kg, whereas 2000 mg TID prolonged infusions were adequate for those with CLCRCG_ABW ≤ 100 mL/min and ABW > 90 kg. For MIC = 2 mg/L and %fT> MIC = 95, PTA was adequate in patients over the entire investigated range of body mass and renal function using a 6000 mg continuous infusion. A prolonged infusion of meropenem 2000 mg TID was sufficient for MIC ≤ 8 mg/L and all investigated ABW and CLCRCG_ABW when employing the PK/PD target %fT > MIC = 40. Short-term infusions of 1000 mg TID were sufficient for CLCRCG_ABW ≤ 130 mL/min and distributions of MIC values for Escherichia coli, Citrobacter freundii, and Klebsiella pneumoniae but not for Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Conclusions: This analysis indicated a need for higher doses (≥ 2000 mg) and prolonged infusions (≥ 3 h) for obese and non-obese patients at MIC ≥ 2 mg/L. Oak Ridge National Laboratory is home to the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR), a high‐flux research reactor, and the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS), the world's most intense source of pulsed neutron beams. The unique co‐localization of these two sources provided an opportunity to develop a suite of complementary small‐angle neutron scattering instruments for studies of large‐scale structures: the GP‐SANS and Bio‐SANS instruments at the HFIR and the EQ‐SANS and TOF‐USANS instruments at the SNS. This article provides an overview of the capabilities of the suite of instruments, with specific emphasis on how they complement each other. A description of the plans for future developments including greater integration of the suite into a single point of entry for neutron scattering studies of large‐scale structures is also provided. The 18kt gold-based bulk glass-forming composition Au 49 Ag 5.5 Pd 2.3 Cu 26.9 Si 16.3 is modified in order to reduce its fast surface tarnishing caused by internal oxidation of Si, partitioning and fast out-diffusion of Cu and Au. By partially substituting Cu by the species Ga or Sn, the formation of Si as primary crystalline phase is facilitated and a distinct increase of the liquidus temperature is observed. It is found that a reduction of the Si content recovers the glass-forming ability of the novel Ga/Sn-containing alloys, reflected by an increasing reduced glass transition temperature, T rg , and a decreasing driving force for crystallization. This strategy is used to reduce the amount of Cu and Si, which are responsible for the fast surface tarnishing. Corrosion studies of the novel alloys reveal that the Cu release into an artificial saliva test solution is up to eight times lower than that of the mother alloy and the corrosion depth in artificial saliva is drastically lowered by 50% for the Ga-bearing alloys and by 80% for the Sn-bearing alloys. The use of biodegradable materials for implants is a promising strategy to overcome known long-term clinical complications related to permanent implants. Ideally, biodegradable implants support the damaged tissue for a certain period and then degrade, while the physiological function of the surrounding tissue is restored. Although Mg-based alloys nearly ideally lend themselves to biodegradable implants, a few critical shortcomings promoted the development of alternative alloy systems. Due to their reasonably good biocompatibility, moderate corrosion rate without hydrogen evolution and adequate mechanical properties, increasing attention has been paid to Zn alloys. In this work, precipitation-hardening alloys in the system Zn-Ag-Cu were developed relying on thermodynamic calculations. After casting the alloys, their microstructures were refined by thermomechanical treatment. The processing was tracked and directed, respectively, by routine investigations of the microstructure, associated with hardness assessments. Although microstructure refinement increased the hardness, the material proved to be susceptible to aging as the homologous temperature of zinc is at 0.43 Tm. Besides mechanical performance and corrosion rate, long-term mechanical stability is another crucial factor that must be taken into consideration to ensure the safety of the implant and thus requires a profound understanding of the aging process. The microstructure of minerals and rocks can significantly alter reaction rates. This study focuses on identifying transport paths in low porosity rocks based on the hypothesis that grain boundary widening accelerates reactions in which one mineral is replaced by another (replacement reaction). We conducted a time series of replacement experiments of three limestones (CaCO3) of different microstructures and solid impurity contents using FeCl2. Reacted solids were analyzed using chemical imaging, small angle X-ray and neutron scattering and Raman spectroscopy. In high porosity limestones replacement is reaction controlled and complete replacement was observed within 2 days. In low porosity limestones that contain 1–2% dolomite impurities and are dominated by grain boundaries, a reaction rim was observed whose width did not change with reaction time. Siderite (FeCO3) nucleation was observed in all parts of the rock cores indicating the percolation of the solution throughout the complete core. Dolomite impurities were identified to act as nucleation sites leading to growth of crystals that exert force on the CaCO3 grains. Widening of grain boundaries beyond what is expected based on dissolution and thermal grain expansion was observed in the low porosity marble containing dolomite impurities. Small-angle neutron scattering has been used to study the vortex lattice in superconducting MgB2 doped with either manganese or carbon to achieve a similar suppression of the critical temperature. Measurements were performed with the magnetic field applied along the c axis, where the vortex lattice in pure MgB2 is known to undergo a field- and temperature-driven 30° rotation transition. For Mn doping, the vortex lattice phase diagram remains qualitatively similar to that of pure MgB2, indicating only a modest effect on the vortex-- vortex interaction. In contrast, the vortex lattice rotation transition is completely suppressed in the C-doped case, probably due to a change in the electronic structure which affects the two-band/two-gap nature of superconductivity in MgB2. The vortex lattice longitudinal correlation length shows the opposite behavior, remaining roughly unchanged between pure and C-doped MgB2 while it is significantly reduced in the Mn-doped case. However, the extensive vortex lattice metastability and related activated behavior, observed in conjunction with the vortex lattice transition in pure MgB2, are also seen in the Mn-doped sample. Background: Hypothermia is neuroprotective in some ischemia-reperfusion injuries. Ischemia-reperfusion injury may occur with traumatic subdural hematoma (SDH). This study aimed to determine whether early induction and maintenance of hypothermia in patients with acute SDH would lead to decreased ischemia-reperfusion injury and improve global neurologic outcome.Methods: This international, multicenter randomized controlled trial enrolled adult patients with SDH requiring evacuation of hematoma within 6 h of injury. The intervention was controlled temperature management of hypothermia to 35 °C prior to dura opening followed by 33 °C for 48 h compared with normothermia (37 °C). Investigators randomly assigned patients at a 1:1 ratio between hypothermia and normothermia. Blinded evaluators assessed outcome using a 6-month Glasgow Outcome Scale Extended score. Investigators measured circulating glial fibrillary acidic protein and ubiquitin C-terminal hydrolase L1 levels.Results: Independent statisticians performed an interim analysis of 31 patients to assess the predictive probability of success and the Data and Safety Monitoring Board recommended the early termination of the study because of futility. Thirty-two patients, 16 per arm, were analyzed. Favorable 6-month Glasgow Outcome Scale Extended outcomes were not statistically significantly different between hypothermia vs. normothermia groups (6 of 16, 38% vs. 4 of 16, 25%; odds ratio 1.8 [95% confidence interval 0.39 to ∞], p = .35). Plasma levels of glial fibrillary acidic protein (p = .036), but not ubiquitin C-terminal hydrolase L1 (p = .26), were lower in the patients with favorable outcome compared with those with unfavorable outcome, but differences were not identified by temperature group. Adverse events were similar between groups.Conclusions: This trial of hypothermia after acute SDH evacuation was terminated because of a low predictive probability of meeting the study objectives. The manipulation of mesoscale domain wall phenomena has emerged as a powerful strategy for designing ferroelectric responses in functional devices, but its full potential is not yet realized in the field of magnetism. This work shows a direct connection between magnetic response functions in mechanically strained samples of Mn3O4 and MnV2O4 and stripe‐like patternings of the bulk magnetization which appear below known magnetostructural transitions. Building off previous magnetic force microscopy data, a small‐angle neutron scattering is used to show that these patterns represent distinctive magnetic phenomena which extend throughout the bulk of two separate materials, and further are controllable via applied magnetic field and mechanical stress. These results are unambiguously connected to the anomalously large magnetoelastic and magnetodielectric response functions reported for these materials, by performing susceptibility measurements on the same crystals and directly correlating local and macroscopic data. Many superconducting materials allow the penetration of magnetic fields in a mixed state in which the superfluid is threaded by a regular lattice of Abrikosov vortices, each carrying one quantum of magnetic flux. The phenomenological Ginzburg-Landau theory, based on the concept of characteristic length scales, has generally provided a good description of the Abrikosov vortex lattice state. We conducted neutron-scattering measurements of the vortex lattice form factor in the heavy-fermion superconductor cerium-cobalt-indium (CeCoIn5) and found that this form factor increases with increasing field—opposite to the expectations within the Abrikosbv-Ginzburg-Landau paradigm. We propose that the anomalous field dependence of the form factor arises from Pauli paramagnetic effects around the vortex cores and from the proximity of the superconducting state to a quantum critical point. Strongly correlated kagome magnets are promising candidates for achieving controllable topological devices owing to the rich interplay between inherent Dirac fermions and correlation-driven magnetism. Here we report tunable local magnetism and its intriguing control of topological electronic response near room temperature in the kagome magnet Fe3Sn2 using small angle neutron scattering, muon spin rotation, and magnetoresistivity measurement techniques. The average bulk spin direction and magnetic domain texture can be tuned effectively by small magnetic fields. Magnetoresistivity, in response, exhibits a measurable degree of anisotropic weak localization behavior, which allows the direct control of Dirac fermions with strong electron correlations. Neuropathic pain develops in 40–70% of spinal cord injury (SCI) patients and markedly compromises quality of life. We examined plasma from SCI patients for autoantibodies to glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) and collapsin response mediator protein-2 (CRMP2) and evaluated their relationship to the development of neuropathic pain. In study 1, plasma samples and clinical data from 80 chronic SCI patients (1–41 years post-SCI) were collected and screened for GFAP autoantibodies (GFAPab). Results from study 1 indicated that GFAPab were present in 34 of 80 (42.5%) patients, but circulating levels did not correlate with the occurrence of neuropathic pain. In study 2, longitudinal plasma samples and clinical data were collected from 38 acute SCI patients. The level of GFAPab measured at 16 ± 7 days post-SCI was found to be significantly higher in patients that subsequently developed neuropathic pain (within 6 months post-SCI) than patients who did not (T = 219; p = 0.02). In study 3, we identified CRMP2 as an autoantibody target (CRMP2ab) in 23% of acute SCI patients. The presence of GFAPab and/or CRMP2ab increased the odds of subsequently developing neuropathic pain within 6 months of injury by 9.5 times (p = 0.006). Our results suggest that if a causal link can be established between these autoantibodies and the development of neuropathic pain, strategies aimed at reducing the circulating levels of these autoantibodies may have therapeutic value. The change of physical properties during aging and the associated microscopic dynamics of the Au 49 Cu 26.9 Si 16.3 Ag 5.5 Pd 2.3 bulk metallic glass are investigated using a broad collection of laboratory and synchrotron-based techniques, such as differential- and fast-scanning calorimetry, thermomechanical testing, and x-ray photon correlation spectroscopy. We observe multiple decays in the enthalpy change during aging. This is reflected by a microscopic ordering consisting of distinct stationary dynamical regimes interconnected by abrupt aging processes. The stationary regimes are representative of states of local and transient equilibrium with increasingly higher activation energies. Furthermore, the aging study is conducted with the kinetically fragile frozen-in structure and the underlying fragile-to-strong transition is accessed by the ultra-viscous liquid state during annealing on a long-time scale and corresponds to the last observed enthalpy equilibration decay. The experimental work verifies, for the first time, that in a metallic glass forming system, the fragile-to-strong transition can also occur below the conventional glass transition temperature. Upon reheating, the reverse transformation, i.e. the strong-to-fragile transition, is observed with an entropy change of 0.19 J/(g-atom K), which is 2.4% of the entropy of fusion. Despite being mutated in cancer and RASopathies, the role of the activation segment ( AS) has not been addressed for B-Raf signaling in vivo. Here, we generated a conditional knock-in mouse allowing the expression of the B-Raf AVKA mutant in which the AS phosphoacceptor sites T599 and S602 are replaced by alanine residues. Surprisingly, despite producing a kinase-impaired protein, the Braf AVKA allele does not phenocopy the lethality of Braf-knockout or paradoxically acting knock-in alleles. However, Braf AVKA mice display abnormalities in the hematopoietic system, a distinct facial morphology, reduced ERK pathway activity in the brain, and an abnormal gait. This phenotype suggests that maximum B-Raf activity is required for the proper development, function, and maintenance of certain cell populations. By establishing conditional murine embryonic fibroblast cultures, we further show that MEK/ ERK phosphorylation and the immediate early gene response toward growth factors are impaired in the presence of B-Raf AVKA. Importantly, alanine substitution of T599/S602 impairs the transformation potential of oncogenic non-V600E B-Raf mutants and a fusion protein, suggesting that blocking their phosphorylation could represent an alternative strategy to ATP-competitive inhibitors. The prevalence and mortality rates of severe infections are high in intensive care units (ICUs). At the same time, the high pharmacokinetic variability observed in ICU patients increases the risk of inadequate antibiotic drug exposure. Therefore, dosing tailored to specific patient characteristics has a high potential to improve outcomes in this vulnerable patient population. This study aimed to develop a tabular dosing decision tool for initial therapy of meropenem integrating hospital-specific, thus far unexploited pathogen susceptibility information. An appropriate meropenem pharmacokinetic model was selected from the literature and evaluated using clinical data. Probability of target attainment (PTA) analysis was conducted for clinically interesting dosing regimens. To inform dosing prior to pathogen identification, the local pathogen-independent mean fraction of response (LPIFR) was calculated based on the observed minimum inhibitory concentrations distribution in the hospital. A simple, tabular, model-informed dosing decision tool was developed for initial meropenem therapy. Dosing recommendations achieving PTA > 90% or LPIFR > 90% for patients with different creatinine clearances were integrated. Based on the experiences during the development process, a generalised workflow for the development of tabular dosing decision tools was derived. [Display omitted] Introducing a non-regular distribution in the mass and bonding by including distinctly different elements can reduce the phonon transport even within structurally well-ordered materials. These distributions are a quality of all high-entropy alloys (HEAs), however the inclusion of aluminum in Al x CoCrFeNi is particularly impactful due to the large mismatch in atomic mass with other components. The resultant low phonon conductivity is a requirement for high thermoelectric performance, motivating the investigation of the effects of Al content on phonon transport as well as other thermoelectric properties. This work examines the phonon and electron transport and thermoelectric conversion properties with various Al contents (0 ≤ x Al ≤ 2) in this Cantor alloy using first-principles calculations, molecular dynamics, and semi-classical Boltzmann transport theory. The calculated phonon density of states and thermoelectric properties present reasonable agreements with experiments, including neutron scattering. A large reduction of phonon conductivity (k L) is observed even with low x Al s, which we attribute to effective phonon scatterings by the large mass mismatch. However, its temperature dependence is not significant, demonstrating a minor contribution of interphonon scattering. In contrast, electrical conductivity (σ) and Seebeck coefficient (S) increase with temperature at higher x Al s with body-centered cubic structures. Therefore, the thermoelectric figure of merit (ZT) of Al x CoCrFeNi HEAs is enhanced by increasing the Al content mainly due to the increase of the thermoelectric power factor (σS 2) at high temperatures, while at low temperatures the phonon-scattering enhancement by mass mismatch is also important. Precision dosing of piperacillin/tazobactam in obese patients is compromised by sparse information on target-site exposure. We aimed to evaluate the appropriateness of current and alternative piperacillin/tazobactam dosages in obese and nonobese patients. Based on a prospective, controlled clinical trial in 30 surgery patients (15 obese/15 nonobese; 0.5-h infusion of 4 g/0.5 g piperacillin/tazobactam), piperacillin pharmacokinetics were characterized in plasma and at target-site (interstitial fluid of subcutaneous adipose tissue) via population analysis. Thereafter, multiple 3–4-times daily piperacillin/tazobactam short-term/prolonged (recommended by EUCAST) and continuous infusions were evaluated by simulation. Adequacy of therapy was assessed by probability of pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic target-attainment (PTA ≥ 90%) based on time unbound piperacillin concentrations exceed the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) during 24 h (%fT>MIC). Lower piperacillin target-site maximum concentrations in obese versus nonobese patients were explained by the impact of lean (approximately two thirds) and fat body mass (approximately one third) on volume of distribution. Simulated steady-state concentrations were 1.43-times, 95%CI = (1.27; 1.61), higher in plasma versus target-site, supporting targets of %fT>2×MIC instead of %fT>4×MIC during continuous infusion to avoid target-site concentrations constantly below MIC. In all obesity and renally impairment/hyperfiltration stages, at MIC = 16 mg/L, adequate PTA required prolonged (thrice-daily 4 g/0.5 g over 3.0 h at %fT>MIC = 50) or continuous infusions (24 g/3 g over 24 h following loading dose at %fT>MIC = 98) of piperacillin/tazobactam.
