The increased integration of information and communications technology at the distribution grid level offers broader opportunities for active operational management concepts. At the same time, requirements for resilience against internal and external threats to the power supply, such as outages or cyberattacks, are increasing. The emerging threat landscape needs to be investigated to ensure the security of supply of future distribution grids. This extended abstract presents a co-simulation environment to study communication infrastructures for the resilient operation of distribution grids. For this purpose, a communication network emulation and a power grid simulation are combined in a common modular environment. This will provide the basis for cybersecurity investigations and testing of new active operation management concepts for smart grids. Given independent random variables $Y_1, \ldots, Y_n$ with $Y_i \in \{0,1\}$ we test the hypothesis whether the underlying success probabilities $p_i$ are constant or whether they are periodic with an unspecified period length of $r \ge 2$. The test relies on an auxiliary integer $d$ which can be chosen arbitrarily, using which a new time series of length $d$ is constructed. For this new time series, the test statistic is derived according to the classical $g$ test by Fisher. Under the null hypothesis of a constant success probability it is shown that the test keeps the level asymptotically, while it has power for most alternatives, i.e. typically in the case of $r \ge 3$ and where $r$ and $d$ have common divisors.

The Compton Spectrometer and Imager (COSI) is a NASA funded Small Explorer (SMEX) mission slated to launch in 2027. COSI will house a wide-field gamma-ray telescope designed to survey the entire sky in the 0.2--5 MeV range. Using germanium detectors, the instrument will provide imaging, spectroscopy, and polarimetry of astrophysical sources with excellent energy resolution and degree-scale localization capabilities. In addition to the main instrument, COSI will fly with a student collaboration project known as the Background and Transient Observer (BTO). BTO will extend the COSI bandpass to energies lower than 200 keV, thus enabling spectral analysis across the shared band of 30 keV--2 MeV range. The BTO instrument will consist of two NaI scintillators and student-designed readout electronics. Using spectral information from both the COSI and BTO instruments, physics such as the energy peak turnover in gamma-ray bursts, the characteristics of magnetar flares, and the event frequency of a range of transient phenomena will be constrained. In this paper, we present the expected science returnables from BTO and comment on the shared returnables from the COSI and BTO missions. We include simulations of gamma-ray bursts, magnetar giant flares, and terrestrial gamma-ray flashes using BTO's spectral response. Additionally, we estimate BTO's gamma-ray burst detection rate and find that BTO will detect ~150 gamma-ray bursts per year, with most of these events being long bursts., Comment: 12 pages of text with an additional 2 pages for acknowledgments and citations. 9 figures. 1 table

Coordinating a high number of flexibility providing units (e.g. to provide ancillary services for the transmission system) across various grid layers requires new control concepts. A flexibility request at a point of common coupling can be met by utilizing a cascaded control structure based on online feedback optimization. In this paper the influence of the parameterization of the individual controllers on the performance of the hierarchical flexibility provision is studied on a three-level test system. The results show a high interdependency between the choice of control parameters of one controller and the behavior of other controllers as well as a significant impact on the accuracy and speed of flexibility provision. With a careful tuning, a cascaded structure based on online feedback optimization can achieve efficient vertical coordination of flexibility providing units.

Learning argumentative writing is challenging. Besides writing fundamentals such as syntax and grammar, learners must select and arrange argument components meaningfully to create high-quality essays. To support argumentative writing computationally, one step is to mine the argumentative structure. When combined with automatic essay scoring, interactions of the argumentative structure and quality scores can be exploited for comprehensive writing support. Although studies have shown the usefulness of using information about the argumentative structure for essay scoring, no argument mining corpus with ground-truth essay quality annotations has been published yet. Moreover, none of the existing corpora contain essays written by school students specifically. To fill this research gap, we present a German corpus of 1,320 essays from school students of two age groups. Each essay has been manually annotated for argumentative structure and quality on multiple levels of granularity. We propose baseline approaches to argument mining and essay scoring, and we analyze interactions between both tasks, thereby laying the ground for quality-oriented argumentative writing support., Comment: Accepted to NAACL 2024

Utilizing distribution grid flexibility for ancillary services requires the coordination and dispatch of requested active and reactive power to a large number of distributed energy resources in underlying grid layers. This paper presents an approach to hierarchically dispatch flexibility requests based on Online Feedback Optimization (OFO). We implement a framework of individual controllers coordinating actors, contributing to flexibility provision, to track a requested operating point at the interface between grid layers. The framework is evaluated in terms of performance during coordination and possible interaction between individual controllers, both central and distributed. Results show high reliability and robustness of the OFO controllers as well as an efficient dispatch of active and reactive power. Its computational efficiency and capabilities in set point tracking during online grid operation are making OFO a promising approach to the flexibility dispatch problem.

Distribution grid flexibility is discussed as a possible measure in curative system operation, yielding a need for an efficient and robust coordination mechanism for the joint flexibility provision by individual units to the transmission grid. This paper introduces a method to coordinate distribution grid level flexibility as a fast-responding curative measure based on Online Feedback Optimization. We utilize an optimization algorithm in a closed loop with the distribution grid to dispatch set points for active and reactive power to flexibility providing units. The approach is evaluated in an experimental setup, utilizing assets connected to an exemplary low voltage grid. Online Feedback Optimization is found to be both a viable as well as a highly effective approach to coordinate distributed energy resources in real-time curative system operation.

While the increasing penetration of information and communication technology into distribution grid brings numerous benefits, it also opens up a new threat landscape, particularly through cyberattacks. To provide a basis for countermeasures against such threats, this paper addresses the investigation of the impact and manifestations of cyberattacks on smart grids by replicating the power grid in a secure, isolated, and controlled laboratory environment as a cyber-physical twin. Currently, detecting intrusions by unauthorized third parties into the central monitoring and control system of grid operators, especially attacks within the grid perimeter, is a major challenge. The development and validation of methods to detect and prevent coordinated and timed attacks on electric power systems depends not only on the availability and quality of data from such attack scenarios, but also on suitable realistic investigation environments. However, to create a comprehensive investigation environment, a realistic representation of the study object is required to thoroughly investigate critical cyberattacks on grid operations and evaluate their impact on the power grid using real data. To apply federated learning to drug discovery we developed a novel platform in the context of European Innovative Medicines Initiative (IMI) project MELLODDY (grant n{\deg}831472), which was comprised of 10 pharmaceutical companies, academic research labs, large industrial companies and startups. The MELLODDY platform was the first industry-scale platform to enable the creation of a global federated model for drug discovery without sharing the confidential data sets of the individual partners. The federated model was trained on the platform by aggregating the gradients of all contributing partners in a cryptographic, secure way following each training iteration. The platform was deployed on an Amazon Web Services (AWS) multi-account architecture running Kubernetes clusters in private subnets. Organisationally, the roles of the different partners were codified as different rights and permissions on the platform and administrated in a decentralized way. Inferring 3D human pose from 2D images is a challenging and long-standing problem in the field of computer vision with many applications including motion capture, virtual reality, surveillance or gait analysis for sports and medicine. We present preliminary results for a method to estimate 3D pose from 2D video containing a single person and a static background without the need for any manual landmark annotations. We achieve this by formulating a simple yet effective self-supervision task: our model is required to reconstruct a random frame of a video given a frame from another timepoint and a rendered image of a transformed human shape template. In this paper we introduce a method for performance quantification of flexibility aggregation in flexibility coordination schemes (FCS), with a focus on privacy preserving hierarchical FCS. The quantification is based on two performance metrics: The aggregation error and the aggregation efficiency. We present the simulation framework and the modelling of one complex type of flexibility providing units (FPUs), namely energy storage systems (ESS). ESS cause intertemporal constraints for flexibility coordination that lead to aggregation errors in case flexibility is aggregated from heterogeneous groups of FPUs. We identify one parameter responsible for the aggregation error to be the power-to-energy ratio of the ESS. A grouping of FPUs using similarity in their power-to-energy ratios is shown to improve the coordination performance. Additionally, we describe the influence of flexibility demand timeseries on the aggregation error, concluding that future assessments of aggregation errors should consider multiple representative demand timeseries, which is a non-trivial task. With the use of proton-NMR and powder XRD (XRPD) studies, the suitability of specific Au FEBID precursors has been investigated to low electron energy, structure, excited states and resonances, structural crystal modifications, flexibility, and vaporization level. Uniquely designed precursor to meet the needs of focused electron beam induced deposition (FEBID) at the nanostructure level, the 4,5-dichloro 1,3-diethyl imidazolylidene trifluoromethyl gold(i) is a compound that proves its capability to create high purity structures, and its growing importance between other AuImx and AuClnB (where x, n are the number of radicals, B = CH, CH3 or Br) compounds in the radiation cancer therapy increases the efforts to design more suitable bonds in processes of SEM deposition and in gas-phase studies. The investigation done to its powder shape using the XRPD XPERT3 Panalytical diffractometer based on CoK{\alpha} lines show changes to its structure with temperature, level of vacuum, and light; the sensitivity of this compound makes it highly interesting to radiation research in particular. Used for FEBID, through its smaller number of C, H, and O atoms has lower levels of C contamination in the structures and on the surface, but it replaces these bonds with C-Cl and C-N bonds that have a lower bond breaking energy but still needing an extra purification step in the deposition process, whether is H2O, O2 or H jets., Comment: 27 pages, 15 figures

Logics with analogous semantics, such as Fuzzy Logic, have a number of explanatory and application advantages, the most well-known being the ability to help experts develop control systems. From a cognitive systems perspective, such languages also have the advantage of being grounded in perception. For social decision making in humans, it is vital that logical conclusions about others (cognitive empathy) are grounded in empathic emotion (affective empathy). Classical Fuzzy Logic, however, has several disadvantages: it is not obvious how complex formulae, e.g., the description of events in a text, can be (a) formed, (b) grounded, and (c) used in logical reasoning. The two-layered Context Logic (CL) was designed to address these issue. Formally based on a lattice semantics, like classical Fuzzy Logic, CL also features an analogous semantics for complex fomulae. With the Activation Bit Vector Machine (ABVM), it has a simple and classical logical reasoning mechanism with an inherent imagery process based on the Vector Symbolic Architecture (VSA) model of distributed neuronal processing. Human pose estimation is a major computer vision problem with applications ranging from augmented reality and video capture to surveillance and movement tracking. In the medical context, the latter may be an important biomarker for neurological impairments in infants. Whilst many methods exist, their application has been limited by the need for well annotated large datasets and the inability to generalize to humans of different shapes and body compositions, e.g. children and infants. In this paper we present a novel method for learning pose estimators for human adults and infants in an unsupervised fashion. We approach this as a learnable template matching problem facilitated by deep feature extractors. Human-interpretable landmarks are estimated by transforming a template consisting of predefined body parts that are characterized by 2D Gaussian distributions. Enforcing a connectivity prior guides our model to meaningful human shape representations. Appropriately representing elements in a database so that queries may be accurately matched is a central task in information retrieval; recently, this has been achieved by embedding the graphical structure of the database into a manifold in a hierarchy-preserving manner using a variety of metrics. Persistent homology is a tool commonly used in topological data analysis that is able to rigorously characterize a database in terms of both its hierarchy and connectivity structure. Computing persistent homology on a variety of embedded datasets reveals that some commonly used embeddings fail to preserve the connectivity. We show that those embeddings which successfully retain the database topology coincide in persistent homology by introducing two dilation-invariant comparative measures to capture this effect: in particular, they address the issue of metric distortion on manifolds. We provide an algorithm for their computation that exhibits greatly reduced time complexity over existing methods. We use these measures to perform the first instance of topology-based information retrieval and demonstrate its increased performance over the standard bottleneck distance for persistent homology. Hyperspectral (HS) imaging was successfully employed in the 380 nm to 1000 nm wavelength range to investigate the efficacy of detecting age, healthiness and individual nutrient deficiency of grapevine leaves collected from vineyards located in central west NSW, Australia. For age detection, the appearance of many healthy grapevine leaves has been examined. Then visually defective leaves were compared with healthy leaves. Control leaves and individual nutrient-deficient leaves (e.g. N, K and Mg) were also analysed. Several features were employed at various stages in the Ultraviolet (UV), Visible (VIS) and Near Infrared (NIR) regions to evaluate the experimental data: mean brightness, mean 1st derivative brightness, variation index, mean spectral ratio, normalised difference vegetation index (NDVI) and standard deviation (SD). Experiment results demonstrate that these features could be utilised with a high degree of effectiveness to compare age, identify unhealthy samples and not only to distinguish from control and nutrient deficiency but also to identify individual nutrient defects. Therefore, our work corroborated that HS imaging has excellent potential as a non-destructive as well as a non-contact method to detect age, healthiness and individual nutrient deficiencies of grapevine leaves, Comment: 24 pages, 23 figures
