Abstract

We use deep multi-epoch PSF photometry taken with the Visible and Infrared Survey Telescope for Astronomy (VISTA) to measure and analyze the proper motions of stars within the Galactic globular cluster 47 Tucanae (47 Tuc, NGC 104). The observations are part of the ongoing near-infrared VISTA survey of the Magellanic Cloud system (VMC). The data analyzed here corresponds to one VMC tile and covers a total sky area of 1.77 deg^2. Absolute proper motions with respect to ~9070 background galaxies are calculated from a linear regression model applied to the stellar positions in 11 epochs in the Ks filter. The data extend over a total time baseline of ~17 months. We found a median proper motion of the stars within 47 Tuc of (mu_a cos(d), mu_d) = (+5.89 +/- 0.02(stat) +/- 0.13(sys), -2.14 +/- 0.02(stat) +/- 0.08(sys)) mas/yr, based on the measurements of ~35000 individual sources between 5' and 42' from the cluster center. We compared our result to the proper motions from the newest US Naval Observatory CCD Astrograph Catalog (UCAC5) which includes data from the Gaia data release 1. Selecting cluster members (~2700 stars) we found a median proper motion of (mu_a cos(d), mu_d) = (+5.30 +/- 0.03(stat) +/- 0.70(sys), -2.70 +/- 0.03(stat) +/- 0.70(sys)) mas/yr. The values derived from the VMC data are consistent with the UCAC5 result, and are close to literature measurements obtained using HST. We combined our results with literature radial velocity measurements and reconstructed the orbit of 47 Tuc, finding that the cluster is on a low-ellipticity orbit and is confined within the inner ~7.5 kpc of the Galaxy. We show that the use of an increased time baseline combined with PSF-determined stellar centroids in crowded regions significantly improves the accuracy of the method. Abstract

The reactive growth of cobalt germanide on Ge(001) was investigated by means of in-situ x-ray absorption spectroscopy photoemission electron microscopy (XAS-PEEM), micro-illumination low-energy electron diffraction ($\mu$-LEED), and ex-situ atomic force microscopy (AFM). At a Co deposition temperature of 670{\deg}C, a rich morphology with different island shapes and dimensions is observed, and a correlation between island morphology and stoichiometry is found. Combining XAS-PEEM and $\mu$-LEED, we were able to identify a large part of the islands to consist of CoGe$_2$, with many of them having an unusual epitaxial relationship: CoGe$_2$[$\bar110$](111) $\parallel$ Ge[$\bar110$](001). Side facets with (112) and (113) orientation have been found for such islands. However, two additional phases were observed, most likely Co$_5$Ge$_7$ and CoGe. The occurrence of these intermediate phases is promoted by defects, as revealed by comparing growth on Ge(001) single crystals and on Ge(001)/Si(001) epilayer substrates.

Abstract

In recent years observations at the level of individual atoms and molecules became possible by microscopy and spectroscopy. Imaging of single fluorescence molecules has been achieved but has so far been restricted to molecules in the immobile state. Here we provide methodology for visualization of the motion of individual fluorescent molecules. It is applied to imaging of the diffusional path of single molecules in a phospholipid membrane by using phospholipids carrying one rhodamine dye molecule. For this methodology, fluorescence microscopy was carried to a sensitivity so that single fluorescent molecules illuminated for only 5 ms were resolvable at a signal/noise ratio of 28. Repeated illuminations permitted direct observation of the diffusional motion of individual molecules with a positional accuracy of 30 nm. Such capability has fascinating potentials in bio-science - for example, to correlate biological functions of cell membranes with movements, spatial organization, and stoichiometries of individual components.

Abstract

Normal forms are presented for linear mechanical systems with holonomic and/or nonholonomic constraints. These forms provide deep insight into the peculiar system structure of constrained linear mechanical systems or the so-called linear mechanical descriptor systems. Based on these normal forms, an explicit observer design method is proposed under a weaker observability assumption, i.e., finite observability or reachable observability on the linear mechanical descriptor systems. The observer has the Luenberger observer form and provides the estimation of displacements, velocities, and constraint forces simultaneously. The finite observability is shown to be a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of this type of observer. The reason for the existence of the Luenberger observers for finitely observable linear mechanical descriptor systems is due to the special system structure. Two examples are included to illustrate the design method.

Abstract

Hot wall epitaxy at substrate temperatures were able to produce single crystalline ZnTe layers grown on (001) GaAs substrates. The best layer quality was obtained when growth was performed at 330 degrees centigrade at a growth rate of 0.8 micrometers/hour. In addition, it was found that the amount of misfit dislocations rapidly decreases with increasing layer thickness while the quality of ZnTe increases.
