Abstract

Since 2015, the research project Ludwig Tieck’s Library. Anatomy of a Romantic Comparatist Book Collection has conducted the virtual reconstruction of the library of German romanticist Ludwig Tieck. About 4.000 volumes have already been located all over Europe, and have been recorded in a database according to current bibliographical standards. Polish libraries verifiably contain a couple dozen of books from Tieck’s collection – it is, however, very probable that many more books from it have been dispersed in Poland after 1945 via the library of Count Yorck von Wartenburg (which was located in today’s Oleśnica Mała in the vicinity of Wrocław). The history of Tieck’s library and its dispersion, and its relevance to Polish library holdings, will be detailed in this paper. In closing, a description of material traits and distinctive features particular to books of Tieck/Yorck provenance will provide information useful to identify respective holdings in Polish libraries.

14. TLC and HPTLC‐APCI‐MS for the rapid discrimination of plant resins frequently used for lacquers and varnishes by artists and conservators.

Abstract

Introduction: Depending on their terpenoid and phenolic constituents plant resins can be classified as diterpenoid, triterpenoid or phenolic resins; thereby the profile of diterpenes and triterpenes is considered as genus‐ or even species‐specific. Objectives: We aimed to develop a simple, rapid, inexpensive, sensitive and specific method for the identification of resin‐specific triterpenoid and phenolic compounds in plant resins using (HP)TLC [(high‐performance) thin‐layer chromatography] combined with APCI‐MS (atmospheric pressure chemical ionisation mass spectrometry) and post‐chromatographic detection reactions. Methods: Twenty resin samples from different plant species were analysed. Different extraction procedures, post‐chromatographic detection reagents as well as various sorbents and solvents for planar chromatography were tested. To evaluate the potential of the optimised (HP)TLC‐APCI‐MS methods, parameter such as limit of detection (LOD) was determined for selected marker compounds. Results: Our protocol enabled qualitative analyses of chemotaxonomic molecular markers in natural resins such as dammar, mastic, olibanum and benzoin. For the first time, the application of thionyl chloride‐stannic chloride reagent for a specific post‐chromatographic detection of triterpenes is reported, sometimes even allowing discrimination between isomers based on their characteristic colour sequences. For triterpene acids, triterpene alcohols and phenolic compounds, detection limits of 2–20 ng/TLC zone and a system precision with a relative standard deviation (RSD) in the range of 3.9%–7.0% were achieved by (HP)TLC‐APCI‐MS. The applicability of the method for the analysis of resin‐based varnishes was successfully tested on a mastic‐based varnish. Thus, the method we propose is a helpful tool for the discrimination of resins and resin‐based varnishes with respect to their botanical origin. 33. Cytochrome P450 single nucleotide polymorphisms in an indigenous Tanzanian population : a concern about the metabolism of artemisinin-based combinations

Abstract

Background: Artemisinin-based combinations currently recommended for treatment of uncomplicated Plasmodium falciparum malaria in many countries of sub-Saharan Africa are substrates of CYP enzymes. The cytochrome enzyme system is responsible for metabolism of about 80-90% of clinically used drugs. It is, therefore, important to obtain the pharmacogenetics of the population in the region with respect to these combinations and thereby enable practitioners to predict treatment outcomes. The aim of this study was to detect and determine allelic frequencies of CYP2C8*2, CYP2C8*3, CYP3A4*1B, CYP3A5*3 and CYP2B6*6 variant alleles in a Tanzanian indigenous population. Methods: Genomic DNA extraction from blood obtained from 256 participants who escorted patients at Karume Health Centre in Mwanza Tanzania, was carried out using the Gene JET (TM) Genomic DNA purification kit (Thermo Scientific). Genotyping for the cytochrome P450 variant alleles was performed using predesigned primers. Amplification was done by PCR while differentiation between alleles was done by restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) (for CYP2C8*2, CYP2C8*3) and sequencing (for CYP2B6*6, CYP3A5*3 and CYP3A4*1B). Results: CYP2C8*2, CYP2C8*3, CYP3A5*3, CYP3A4*1B and CYP2B6*6 variant allelic frequencies were found to be 19,10,16,78 and 36% respectively. Conclusion: Prevalence of CYP2C8*2, CYP3A5*3, CYP3A4*1B and CYP2B6*6 mutations in a Tanzanian population/ subjects are common. The impact of these point mutations on the metabolism of anti-malarial drugs, particularly artemisinin-based combinations, and their potential drug-drug interactions (DDIs) needs to be further evaluated.

Abstract

Yoga has increased in popularity in recent years and is highly visible in popular culture. This paper examines the reasons people in the U.S. practice yoga in and outside of yoga classes and how they envision the experience in relation to their physical and spiritual lives. Yoga is especially attractive to women as a search for meaning and salvation through body transformation and a search for value and voice in New Age spirituality. I attended yoga classes as a participant observer and surveyed other participants. My analysis explores the relationships between yoga, exercise, gender, and religion in the contemporary practice of yoga. Yoga is used for exercise and/or weight loss, the reduction of stress, improvement of mental functions, spirituality, and is associated with the New Age Movement. All of these contexts involve an investment in the process of transformation. The ethic of personal and social transformation, the communal nature of yoga classes, and the feminized presentations of yoga in popular media have contributed to yoga?s particular appeal for women. Also of interest in this discussion is the connection between yoga and religion and the pseudo-religious forms taken by exercise and weight-loss regimens in general. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

41. Doing sexual harassment within gendered workplace structures

Abstract

Sexual harassment has destructive emotional and economic consequences for targets. It both reflects and reproduces a system of gender inequality in which men often use institutional power to coerce sex and sexual harassment to reinforce gender hierarchies. Workplaces and the climates within them are often complicit in such processes. Building on the sexual harassment literature, this thesis offers a process-based framework for understanding sexual harassment in employment. Drawing from both quantitative data and significant qualitative case materials pertaining to actual incidents of sexual harassment in the state of Ohio from 1988-2003, I examine the extent of sexual harassment across subgroups and describe the process of sexual harassment, including the actions of harassers and targets and the events that lead up to the filing of sexual harassment charges. These analyses also highlight the responses of workplaces to harassing behaviors and the descriptions of those responses and behaviors by witnesses. Results show how the process of sexual harassment differs for men and women, most notably in the overall likelihood of being sexually harassed and in the response of the workplace itself to harassment claims. Differences also exist with regard to collective and individual harassment. Finally, and in terms of the process of harassment, findings indicate that it only intensifies and takes on an aggressive, yet less explicitly sexual, form over time even when the harasser is confronted or internal workplace complaints are filed. By highlighting these events and their meanings, this thesis provides a foundation on which to construct solutions to a problem that negatively colors the daily work experiences of both women and men.

42. Yoga 'Holistic' Exercise in: Ohio

Abstract

Yoga is depicted in U.S. popular culture as the sacred practice of an ancient tradition, guaranteed to initiate the western participant into the secrets of health and well being, i.e. a low-impact exercise regimen. However, the yoga that is practiced in the U.S. is often removed from its actual history. The physical practices are regularly isolated from the holistic philosophy and come to be understood as the entirety of yoga and marketed as a "spiritual" form of exercise. This paper will explore literature relevant to these themes and examine the reasons for yoga's popularity and the manner in which it is incorporated into the lives of those who practice it.
