Abstract

The first generation of ELT instruments includes an optical-infrared high-resolution spectrograph, indicated as ELT-HIRES and recently christened ANDES (ArmazoNes high Dispersion Echelle Spectrograph). ANDES consists of three fibre-fed spectrographs ([U]BV, RIZ, YJH) providing a spectral resolution of $\sim$100,000 with a minimum simultaneous wavelength coverage of 0.4-1.8 $\mu$m with the goal of extending it to 0.35-2.4 $\mu$m with the addition of a U arm to the BV spectrograph and a separate K band spectrograph. It operates both in seeing- and diffraction-limited conditions and the fibre feeding allows several, interchangeable observing modes including a single conjugated adaptive optics module and a small diffraction-limited integral field unit in the NIR. Modularity and fibre-feeding allow ANDES to be placed partly on the ELT Nasmyth platform and partly in the Coud\'e room. ANDES has a wide range of groundbreaking science cases spanning nearly all areas of research in astrophysics and even fundamental physics. Among the top science cases, there are the detection of biosignatures from exoplanet atmospheres, finding the fingerprints of the first generation of stars, tests on the stability of Nature's fundamental couplings, and the direct detection of the cosmic acceleration. Abstract

State-of-the-art 19th century spectroscopy led to the discovery of quantum mechanics, and 20th century spectroscopy led to the confirmation of quantum electrodynamics. State-of-the-art 21st century astrophysical spectrographs, especially ANDES at ESO's ELT, have another opportunity to play a key role in the search for, and characterization of, the new physics which is known to be out there, waiting to be discovered. We rely on detailed simulations and forecast techniques to discuss four important examples of this point: big bang nucleosynthesis, the evolution of the cosmic microwave background temperature, tests of the universality of physical laws, and a real-time model-independent mapping of the expansion history of the universe (also known as the redshift drift). The last two are among the flagship science drivers for the ELT. Abstract

The known Mega and Hyper Metal-Poor (MMP-HMP) stars with [Fe/H]<-6.0 and <-5.0, respectively, likely belong to the CEMP-no class, i.e. carbon-enhanced stars with low or absent second peak neutron capture elements. They are likely second generation stars and the few elements measurable in their atmospheres are used to infer the properties of single or very few progenitors. The high carbon abundance in the CEMP-no stars offers a unique opportunity to measure the carbon isotopic ratio, which directly monitors the presence of mixing between the He and H-burning layers either within the star or in the progenitor(s). By means of high-resolution spectra acquired with the ESPRESSO spectrograph at the VLT we aim to derive values for the 12C/13C ratio at the lowest metallicities. A spectral synthesis technique based on the SYNTHE code and on ATLAS models is used within a Markov-chain Monte Carlo methodology to derive 12C/13C in the stellar atmospheres of five of the most metal poor stars. These are the Mega Metal-Poor giant SMS J0313-6708 ([Fe/H]<-7.1), the Hyper Metal-Poor dwarf HE1327-2326 ([Fe/H]=-5.8),the Hyper Metal-Poor giant SDSS J1313-0019 ([Fe/H] = -5.0) and the Ultra Metal-Poor subgiant HE0233-0343 ([Fe/H]=-4.7). We also revise a previous value for the Mega Metal-Poor giant SMSS J1605-1443 with ([Fe/H] = -6.2). In four stars we derive an isotopic value while for HE1327-2326 we provide a lower limit. All Measurements are in the range 39<12C/13C<100 showing that the He- and H-burning layers underwent partial mixing either in the stars or, more likely, in their progenitors. Abstract

SMSS J160540.18$-$144323.1 is the carbon-enhanced metal-poor (CEMP) star with the lowest iron abundance ever measured, [Fe/H]=-6.2, which was first reported with the SkyMapper telescope. The carbon abundance is A(C)~6.1 in the low-C band, as the majority of the stars in this metallicity range. Yet, constraining the isotopic ratio of key species, such as carbon, sheds light on the properties and origin of these elusive stars. We performed high-resolution observations of SMSS1605$-$1443 with the ESPRESSO spectrograph to look for variations in the radial velocity ($v_{rad}$) with time. These data have been combined with older MIKE and UVES archival observations to enlarge the temporal baseline. The $^{12}$C/$^{13}$C isotopic ratio is also studied to explore the possibility of mass transfer from a binary companion. A cross-correlation function against a natural template was applied to detect $v_{rad}$ variability and a spectral synthesis technique was used to derive $^{12}$C/$^{13}$C in the stellar atmosphere. We confirm previous indications of binarity in SMSS1605$-$1443 and measured a lower limit $^{12}$C/$^{13}$C$>60$ at more than a 3$\sigma$ confidence level, proving that this system is chemically unmixed and that no mass transfer from the unseen companion has happened so far. Thus, we confirm the CEMP-no nature of SMSS1605$-$1443 and show that the pristine chemical composition of the cloud from which it formed is currently imprinted in its stellar atmosphere free of contamination., Comment: Published in A&A, 9 pages, 6 figures

Abstract

HE 0107$-$5240 is a hyper metal-poor star with $\rm [Fe/H]=-5.39$. We performed high-res observations with the ESPRESSO spectrograph at the VLT to constrain the kinematical properties of the binary system HE 0107$-$5240 and to probe the binarity of the sample of 8 most metal-poor stars with $\rm [Fe/H]<-4.5$. Radial velocities are obtained by using cross-correlation in the interval 4200$-$4315A, which contains the strong CH band, against a template in an iterative process. A Bayesian method is applied to calculate the orbit by using the ESPRESSO measurements and others from the literature. A chemical analysis has also been performed in HE0107$-$5240 by means of spectral synthesis. Observations of HE 0107$-$5240 spanning more than 3 years show a monotonic decreasing trend in radial velocity at a rate of approximately by 0.5 ms$^{-1}$d$^{-1}$. The period is constrained at $P_{\rm orb} = 13009_{-1370}^{+1496}$d. New more stringent upper-limits have been found for several elements: a)[Sr/Fe] and [Ba/Fe] are lower than $-0.76$ and $+0.2$ respectively, confirming the star is a CEMP-no; b)$A(Li)< 0.5$ is well below the plateau at $A(Li)=1.1$ found in the Lower Red Giant Branch stars, suggesting Li was originally depleted; and c)the isotopic ratio $^{12}$C/$^{13}$C is 87$\pm6$ showing very low $^{13}$C in contrast to what expected from a spinstar progenitor. We confirm that HE 0107$-$5240 is a binary star with a long period of about 13000d ($\sim36$ years).The carbon isotopic ratio excludes the possibility that the companion has gone through the AGB phase and transferred mass to the currently observed star. The binarity of HE 0107$-$5240 implies some of the first generations of low-mass stars form in multiple systems and indicates that the low metallicity does not preclude the formation of binaries. Abstract

ESPRESSO is the new high-resolution spectrograph of ESO's Very-Large Telescope (VLT). It was designed for ultra-high radial-velocity precision and extreme spectral fidelity with the aim of performing exoplanet research and fundamental astrophysical experiments with unprecedented precision and accuracy. It is able to observe with any of the four Unit Telescopes (UT) of the VLT at a spectral resolving power of 140,000 or 190,000 over the 378.2 to 788.7 nm wavelength range, or with all UTs together, turning the VLT into a 16-m diameter equivalent telescope in terms of collecting area, while still providing a resolving power of 70,000. We provide a general description of the ESPRESSO instrument, report on the actual on-sky performance, and present our Guaranteed-Time Observation (GTO) program with its first results. ESPRESSO was installed on the Paranal Observatory in fall 2017. Commissioning (on-sky testing) was conducted between December 2017 and September 2018. The instrument saw its official start of operations on October 1st, 2018, but improvements to the instrument and re-commissioning runs were conducted until July 2019. The measured overall optical throughput of ESPRESSO at 550 nm and a seeing of 0.65 arcsec exceeds the 10% mark under nominal astro-climatic conditions. We demonstrate a radial-velocity precision of better than 25 cm/s during one night and 50 cm/s over several months. These values being limited by photon noise and stellar jitter show that the performanceis compatible with an instrumental precision of 10 cm/s. No difference has been measured across the UTs neither in throughput nor RV precision. The combination of the large collecting telescope area with the efficiency and the exquisite spectral fidelity of ESPRESSO opens a new parameter space in RV measurements, the study of planetary atmospheres, fundamental constants, stellar characterisation and many other fields., Comment: 26 pages, 28 figures

Abstract

The bright star $\pi$ Men was chosen as the first target for a radial velocity follow-up to test the performance of ESPRESSO, the new high-resolution spectrograph at the ESO's Very-Large Telescope (VLT). The star hosts a multi-planet system (a transiting 4 M$_\oplus$ planet at $\sim$0.07 au, and a sub-stellar companion on a $\sim$2100-day eccentric orbit) which is particularly appealing for a precise multi-technique characterization. With the new ESPRESSO observations, that cover a time span of 200 days, we aim to improve the precision and accuracy of the planet parameters and search for additional low-mass companions. We also take advantage of new photometric transits of $\pi$ Men c observed by TESS over a time span that overlaps with that of the ESPRESSO follow-up campaign. We analyse the enlarged spectroscopic and photometric datasets and compare the results to those in the literature. We further characterize the system by means of absolute astrometry with Hipparcos and Gaia. We used the spectra of ESPRESSO for an independent determination of the stellar fundamental parameters. We present a precise characterization of the planetary system around $\pi$ Men. The ESPRESSO radial velocities alone (with typical uncertainty of 10 cm/s) allow for a precise retrieval of the Doppler signal induced by $\pi$ Men c. The residuals show an RMS of 1.2 m/s, and we can exclude companions with a minimum mass less than $\sim$2 M$_\oplus$ within the orbit of $\pi$ Men c). We improve the ephemeris of $\pi$ Men c using 18 additional TESS transits, and in combination with the astrometric measurements, we determine the inclination of the orbital plane of $\pi$ Men b with high precision ($i_{b}=45.8^{+1.4}_{-1.1}$ deg). This leads to the precise measurement of its absolute mass $m_{b}=14.1^{+0.5}_{-0.4}$ M$_{Jup}$, and shows that the planetary orbital planes are highly misaligned., Comment: Accepted for publication on A&A

Abstract

We report ab initio calculations showing that a single one-dimensional extended defect can originate topologically-protected metallic states in the bulk of two-dimensional topological insulators. We find that a narrow extended defect composed of periodic units consisting of one octogonal and two pentagonal rings embedded in the hexagonal bulk of a bismuth bilayer introduces two pairs of one-dimensional Dirac-fermion states with opposite spin-momentum locking. Although both Dirac pairs are localized along the extended-defect core, their interactions are screened due to the trivial topological nature of the extended defect., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, 2 tables

9. Doping of graphene adsorbed on the a-SiO$_2$ surface

Abstract

We have performed an {\it ab initio} theoretical investigation of graphene sheet adsorbed on amorphous SiO$_2$ surface (G/a-SiO$_2$). We find that graphene adsorbs on the a-SiO$_2$ surface through van der Waals interactions. The inhomogeneous topology of the a-SiO$_2$ clean surface promotes a total charge density displacement on the adsorbed graphene sheet, giving rise to electron-rich as well as hole-rich regions on the graphene. Such anisotropic distribution of the charge density may contribute to the reduction of the electronic mobility in G/a-SiO$_2$ systems. Furthermore, the adsorbed graphene sheet exhibits a net total charge density gain. In this case, the graphene sheet becomes n-type doped, however, with no formation of chemical bonds at the graphene--SiO$_2$ interface. The electronic charge transfer from a-SiO$_2$ to the graphene sheet occurs upon the formation of a partially occupied level lying above the Dirac point. We find that such partially occupied level comes from the three-fold coordinated oxygen atoms in the a-SiO$_2$ substrate.

10. EL2--like defects in InP nanowires

Abstract

We have performed an {\it ab initio} total energy investigation, within the density functional theory (DFT), of antisite defects in InP nanowires (InP$NW$s) grown along the [111] direction. Our total energy results indicate that, (i) P antisites (P$_{\rm In}$) are the most likely antisite defect compared with In antisites (In$_{\rm P}$), and (ii) the formation energies of P and In antisites do not depend on the $NW$ diameter. In particular, thin InP$NW$s, diameters of $\sim$13 \AA, the P$_{\rm In}$ antisite exhibits a trigonal symmetry, lying at 0.15 \AA from the $T_d$ site, followed by a metastable configuration with P$_{\rm In}$ in an interstitial position (1.15 \AA from the $T_d$ site). We find a P$_{\rm In}$--P dissociation energy of 0.33 eV, and there is no EL2--like center for such a thin InP$NW$. However, EL2--like defects occur by increasing the $NW$ diameter. For diameters of $\sim$18 \AA, the P$_{\rm In}$--P dissociation energy increases to 0.53 eV, which is 0.34 eV lower compared with the P$_{\rm In}$--P dissociation energy for InP bulk phase, 0.87 eV. We mapped the atomic displacements and calculated the relaxation energy, Franck--Condon shift, upon single excitation of P$_{\rm In}$ induced states in InP$NW$. The formation (or not) of EL2--like defects, P$_{\rm In}$--P dissociation energy barrier, and the Franck--Condon (FC) energy shift, can be tuned by the $NW$ diameter., Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures

Abstract

The first generation of ELT instruments includes an optical-infrared high resolution spectrograph, indicated as ELT-HIRES and recently christened ANDES (ArmazoNes high Dispersion Echelle Spectrograph). ANDES consists of three fibre-fed spectrographs (UBV, RIZ, YJH) providing a spectral resolution of similar to 100,000 with a minimum simultaneous wavelength coverage of 0.4-1.8 mu m with the goal of extending it to 0.35-2.4 mu m with the addition of a K band spectrograph. It operates both in seeing- and diffraction-limited conditions and the fibre-feeding allows several, interchangeable observing modes including a single conjugated adaptive optics module and a small diffraction-limited integral field unit in the NIR. Its modularity will ensure that ANDES can be placed entirely on the ELT Nasmyth platform, if enough mass and volume is available, or partly in the Coude room. ANDES has a wide range of groundbreaking science cases spanning nearly all areas of research in astrophysics and even fundamental physics. Among the top science cases there are the detection of biosignatures from exoplanet atmospheres, finding the fingerprints of the first generation of stars, tests on the stability of Nature's fundamental couplings, and the direct detection of the cosmic acceleration. The ANDES project is carried forward by a large international consortium, composed of 35 Institutes from 13 countries, forming a team of more than 200 scientists and engineers which represent the majority of the scientific and technical expertise in the field among ESO member states.

Abstract

ANDES consists of three fibre-fed spectrographs (UBV, RIZ, YJH) providing a spectral resolution of similar to 100,000 with a minimum simultaneous wavelength coverage of 0.4-1.8 mu m with the goal of extending it to 0.35-2.4 mu m with the addition of a K band spectrograph. It operates both in seeing- and diffraction-limited conditions and the fibre-feeding allows several, interchangeable observing modes including a single conjugated adaptive optics module and a small diffraction-limited integral field unit in the NIR. Its modularity will ensure that ANDES can be placed entirely on the ELT Nasmyth platform, if enough mass and volume is available, or partly in the Coude room. ANDES has a wide range of groundbreaking science cases spanning nearly all areas of research in astrophysics and even fundamental physics. Among the top science cases there are the detection of biosignatures from exoplanet atmospheres, finding the fingerprints of the first generation of stars, tests on the stability of Nature's fundamental couplings, and the direct detection of the cosmic acceleration. The ANDES project is carried forward by a large international consortium, composed of 35 Institutes from 13 countries, forming a team of more than 200 scientists and engineers which represent the majority of the scientific and technical expertise in the field among ESO member states.

Abstract

The energetic stability, electronic and structural properties of MoS2 adsorbed on an amorphous a-HfO2 surface (MoS2/HfO2) are examined through ab initio theoretical investigations. Our total energy results indicate that the formation of MoS2/HfO2 is an exothermic process with an adsorption energy of 34 meV/Ų, which means that it is more stable than similar systems like graphene/HfO2 and MoS2/SiO2. There are no chemical bonds at the MoS2-HfO2 interface. Upon formation of MoS2/HfO2, the electronic charge distribution is mostly localized at the interface region with no net charge transfer between the adsorbed MoS2 sheet and -HfO2 surface. However, the MoS2 sheet becomes n-type doped when there are oxygen vacancies in the HfO2 surface. Further investigation of the electronic distribution reveals that there are no electron- and hole-rich regions (electron-hole puddles) on the MoS2 sheet, which makes this system promising for use in high-speed nanoelectronic devices. Abstract

The Ribosomal Database Project (RDP-II), previously described by Maidak et al. [ Nucleic Acids Res. (1997), 25, 109-111], is now hosted by the Center for Microbial Ecology at Michigan State University. RDP-II is a curated database that offers ribosomal RNA (rRNA) nucleotide sequence data in aligned and unaligned forms, analysis services, and associated computer programs. During the past two years, data alignments have been updated and now include >9700 small subunit rRNA sequences. The recent development of an ObjectStore database will provide more rapid updating of data, better data accuracy and increased user access. RDP-II includes phylogenetically ordered alignments of rRNA sequences, derived phylogenetic trees, rRNA secondary structure diagrams, and various software programs for handling, analyzing and displaying alignments and trees. The data are available via anonymous ftp (ftp.cme.msu. edu) and WWW (http://www.cme.msu.edu/RDP). The WWW server provides ribosomal probe checking, approximate phylogenetic placement of user-submitted sequences, screening for possible chimeric rRNA sequences, automated alignment, and a suggested placement of an unknown sequence on an existing phylogenetic tree. Additional utilities also exist at RDP-II, including distance matrix, T-RFLP, and a Java-based viewer of the phylogenetic trees that can be used to create subtrees.

Abstract

GaP nanowire, a potential material for new devices where optical and electronic applications can be merged, suffers some limitations because it presents indirect band gap. Using first principles calculations we demonstrate that, due to confinement effects, the band gap not only is enlarged when in a nanowire form, but can be transformed to a direct band gap semiconductor nanowire, just by reducing the nanowire diameter to few nanometers. This transition to a direct band gap is obtained for [111] oriented GaP nanowires but not for [110] oriented nanowires. The effects of surface states which can alter the band gap have been studied with hydrogen saturation and an oxide cap layer on the surface of the GaP nanowire. The results show that, while the hydrogen is a perfect passivator, the GaP/Ga2O3 heterojunction presents a small conduction band offset but keeps direct band gap [111] oriented GaP nanowires. Abstract

Shrimp farming constitutes an important source of revenue and employment in many developing countries. However, infectious diseases have affected the profitability of the shrimp industry. For this reason, disease prevention is a priority and shrimp immunology has become a prime area of research. In such a perspective, studies into the value of cellular and humoral parameters as indicators of shrimp condition are being carried out, with the intention of developing criteria for sanitary surveys, immunomodulation studies and selection programs for shrimp with high resistance to pathogens. Several quantitative, fast and easy procedures are being adapted to evaluate the expression of the immune response of shrimp. In regard to cellular parameters, the hemogram and two cellular mechanisms, the radical oxygen intermediates (ROIs) generated during post- phagocytic events and phenoloxidase (PO) activity have been considered as potential markers. Concerning humoral parameters, the antibacterial activity of plasma and the concentration of plasma proteins can be considered as criteria of health status. Information is presented about the immunological tools used to evaluate these health markers and the results concerning the clinical significance of response modifications. Abstract

Bi-covered (Ö3× Ö3) reconstructed Si(111) surface has been studied by first principles calculations. Three different Bi coverages have been considered: 1 monolayer (ML), 1/3 ML and 2/3 ML, leading to the milkstool, T4 and the honeycomb structural models, respectively. Our total energy calculations show that the milkstool model is the energetically most stable structure for high Bi coverages followed by the T4 model for low Bi coverages, without going through a stable structure for the honeycomb model. We performed theoretical STM simulations for the three structures. For 1 ML coverage we observe the formation of Bi-trimers for occupied states, and a honeycomb image for empty states. It is suggested that the experimentally obtained STM image of a honeycomb structure does not correspond to a Bi-coverage of 2/3 ML, but it could represent a STM image of empty states localized in the T4 sites aside the Bi-trimers of the milkstool model.
