Research was conducted to examine the oxygen-dependent regulation of the expression of the catalase gene katA of Lactobacillus sakei LTH677 as well as in the recombinant strains of L curvatus, L casei and Escherichia coli. Results demonstrate unique combinations of properties. The catalase activity responded to exposure of the cells to oxygen. Regulation occurred at the transcriptional level and a unique sequence involved in regulation of the promoter was identified.

A study was conducted to determine the influence of shear on the micellar hexagonal phase structure of liquid crystals. The hexagonal liquid crystal phases of two surfactants were analyzed. Several techniques were used to perform this task namely, deuterium nuclear magnetic resonance, birefringence, microscopy, small-angle neuron scattering and small-angle light scattering. The rodlike micelles were observed to be positioned along the flow direction. Also, the shear orientation correlation perpendicular to the flow direction was longer than the diameter of a micelle.
