Introduction: Internet memes are a ubiquitous part of internet culture and a common communication tool among students. Because they are a good medium for expressing ideas and concepts in a concise and fun manner, memes are a potentially valuable tool for teaching and engaging students. Statement of the Problem: Instructors may not know how to use memes in classroom assignments or activities to support learning objectives. Literature Review: Students finding or creating their own class-related content is an empirically supported way to enhance learning. Instructors can enhance learning by using multimedia approaches (pictures/videos in addition to words), which is a good fit for the use of memes. We include examples of ways that memes have already been used in psychology classrooms. Teaching Implications: Incorporating meme assignments or activities in the classroom could be beneficial. Conclusion: We describe how students can explain or generate memes that illustrate concepts related to course material. Instructions and supporting information and resources, as well as calls for research into the effectiveness of the use of memes in the classroom, are included. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Listening has been identified as an important part of the communication process. Despite this recognition, it is still undertaught in the undergraduate management classroom. This article presents an exercise for introductory organizational behavior classrooms that helps illustrate the importance of listening behaviors (both verbal and nonverbal) to undergraduate students. Students communicate in pairs where restrictions are placed on both the speaker and the listener. Through this experience, and class discussion around the exercise, students are helped to see the value of listening behaviors. The exercise fits well as a way of introducing the topics of listening and listening behaviors. Potential variations of the exercise are discussed, based on instructor preference and course needs.

AlN layers annealed at high temperatures offer low threading dislocation densities of mid 108 cm−2 and are therefore increasingly used as base layers in ultraviolet (UV) light emitting diode (LED) heterostructure growth. These LEDs, just like those grown on conventional metalorganic vapor phase epitaxy (MOVPE) AlN templates, often suffer from long-wavelength parasitic luminescence. In this work, luminescence properties of far-UVC LED heterostructures grown on MOVPE-AlN/sapphire templates and high-temperature annealed AlN/sapphire templates are compared. To investigate the origin of parasitic emission with high spatial resolution, cross section scanning transmission electron microscopy was combined with cathodoluminescence measurements. As a result, the main origin of the parasitic luminescence band centered at 3.5 eV (354 nm) for the heterostructure grown on annealed AlN is assigned to point defects related to oxygen in the AlN template layer. The defect band centered at 3.0 eV (413 nm) for the heterostructure grown on MOVPE-AlN was found to be related to self-compensating VAl-Si point defect complexes in the n-AlGaN layer and oxygen incorporation close to the AlN/sapphire interface. The results also suggest that the type of AlN template determines the kind of parasitic luminescence from the n-AlGaN layer. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this article, we present two TEDx Talks that focus on career planning. The presenters present diametrically opposing perspectives on whether passion fuels great careers or whether one finds passion after choosing one's career. The versatility of these resources is highlighted both in terms of the audience (i.e., undergraduate or graduate) and the activity (in-person or online discussion, or as an assignment). We have found that these two presenters have been instrumental in student understanding of various core career planning concepts, such as the benefits of career planning, barriers to career planning, and career anchors.
