1. Radiative Corrections in Super Rosenbluth Experiments

Abstract

Super Rosenbluth experiments, elastic electron-proton scattering experiments that eschew traditional electron detection and opt instead for the detection of the recoiling proton, have several experimental advantages. One claimed advantage is that radiative corrections are more favorable, i.e., smaller and with less kinematic dependence. In this paper, we explore this claim by conducting Monte Carlo simulations of both Super Rosenbluth and traditional Rosenbluth experiments with different models of radiative effects. When using a model that employs the peaking approximation, we indeed confirm that reduced kinematic dependence of the radiative corrections. However, we find that more sophisticated models that avoid the peaking approximation are unable to produce numerically stable results, due to a large enhancement to the cross section for bremsstrahlung radiation from the proton when the invariant squared momentum transfer $Q^2$ approaches zero. Since this enhancement is not modelled in the peaking approximation, a more robust approach to radiative corrections in Super Rosenbluth experiments is needed., Comment: 14 pages, 5 figures (9 total panels)

7. Predicted Measurements of the Tensor-to-Scalar Transition in the CLAS12 Nuclear Targets Experiment

Abstract

Short-range correlated (SRC) nucleon pairs, which are strongly interacting nucleons at short inter-particle distances, can reveal properties of the effective nucleon-nucleon (\textit{NN}) interaction at short distance scales. The relative abundance of proton-proton (\textit{pp}) pairs and proton-neutron (\textit{pn}) pairs, for example, is sensitive to the tensor contribution to the \textit{NN} interaction. Generalized Contact Formalism (GCF) theory, when used with realistic phenomenological \textit{NN} potential models, predicts a transition from a tensor-dominated regime -- at relative momenta of approximately 400~MeV/\textit{c} where \textit{pp} pairs are suppressed relative to \textit{pn} pairs -- to a scalar-dominated regime at higher momenta with no preferred isospin projection. While an increase in the prevalence of \textit{pp} pairs with increasing momentum has been observed in a few experiments, difficulties associated with neutron detection have so far hindered the observation of a corresponding reduction in the abundance of \textit{pn} pairs. High-precision measurements showing a simultaneous increase in the abundance of \textit{pp} pairs and change in the abundance of \textit{pn} pairs with increasing momentum would conclusively demonstrate the existence of the tensor-to-scalar transition. In this work, we study the potential impact of the recently conducted Nuclear Targets Experiment at the CLAS12 detector at Jefferson Lab, using GCF simulations. We model the expected yields and relevant observables for a carbon target with a beam energy of 6 GeV and show that sufficient statistical precision can be obtained from the experimental data, both for \textit{pp} and \textit{pn} pairs, to observe the tensor-to-scalar transition., Comment: 23 pages, 6 figures

Radiative corrections are crucial for modern high-precision physics experiments, and are an area of active research in the experimental and theoretical community. Here we provide an overview of the state of the field of radiative corrections with a focus on several topics: lepton-proton scattering, QED corrections in deep-inelastic scattering, and in radiative light-hadron decays. Particular emphasis is placed on the two-photon exchange, believed to be responsible for the proton form-factor discrepancy, and associated Monte-Carlo codes. 9. Studying the Impact of Virtuality-Dependent Nucleon Structure Modification on Spectator-Tagged Deep Inelastic Scattering

Abstract

Measurements of deep inelastic scattering from nuclei have revealed that the partonic structure of bound nucleons differs from that of free nucleons. One hypothesis is that this structure modification primarily occurs in highly virtual nucleons participating in short-range correlations, although distinguishing this from other hypotheses is difficult with inclusive measurements alone. Spectator-tagged deep inelastic scattering, on the other hand, may offer a way to specifically probe the partonic structure of highly-virtual nucleons by detecting the correlated emission of a spectator nucleon. Here, we present a method for calculating a "spectator-tagged" structure function for a nucleus by combining Generalized Contact Formalism's description of short-range correlations with light-cone convolution formalism to determine the impact of nucleon motion on the structure function. We apply this method to calculate predictions for helium-4, and find that differences in the virtuality-dependence of nucleon structure modification can lead to large measurable changes in the tagged structure function. The recent CLAS12 Short-Range Correlations Experiment, which collected electron scattering data on helium-4 and other nuclear targets, may be able to constrain this virtuality-dependence and help test whether correlations are the origin of the modification of bound nucleon structure., Comment: 19 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

New high-statistics total cross section data for $\gamma p\to J/\psi p$ from the GLUonic EXcitation (GlueX) experiment are fitted in a search for the exotic $P_c(4312)^+$ state observed by the Large Hadron Collider beauty (LHCb) collaboration. The integrated luminosity of this GlueX experiment was about $320~\mathrm{pb^{-1}}$. The fits show that destructive interference involving an $S$-wave resonance and associated non-resonance background produces a sharp dip structure about $75~\mathrm{MeV}$ below the LHCb mass, in the same location as a similar structure is seen in the data. Abstract

We have evaluated pseudoscalar and scalar neutral pion photoproduction in $\vec{\gamma}p\to\pi^0p$ and $\vec{\gamma}p\to a_0^0p$ above the resonance region and within Regge phenomenology. Our fit, including GlueX $\Sigma$ pseudoscalar photoproduction data, shows that previous SLAC $\Sigma$ measurements for $\vec{\gamma}p \to \pi^0p$ above $E_\gamma = 4~\mathrm{GeV}$ are at variance with SLAC data with more recent measurements made by GlueX in vicinity of $E_\gamma = 9~\mathrm{GeV}$. The Regge model predicts that the beam polarization asymmetry $\Sigma$ of the scalar meson is opposite to that of pseudoscalar meson photoproduction, however, the cross sections are similar. While the vector natural parity meson exchange is dominant in both cases, the contribution of the pseudovector unnatural parity meson exchange is very small. Using Regge phenomenology, we predicted high energy behavior for double polarized observables $\mathbb{E}$, $\mathbb{F}$, $\mathbb{G}$, and $\mathbb{H}$ for the reactions $\gamma p\to \pi^0p$ and $\gamma p\to a_0^0p$., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures, several small glitches were fixed

Abstract

High-energy electron scattering is a clean, precise probe for measurements of hadronic and nuclear structure and plays a key role in understanding the role of high-momentum nucleons (and quarks) in nuclei. Jefferson Lab has dramatically expanded our knowledge of the high-momentum nucleons generated by short-range correlations, providing sufficient insight to model much of their impact on nuclear structure in neutron stars and in low- to medium-energy scattering observables, including neutrino oscillation measurements. These short-range correlations also seem related to the modification of the quark distributions in nuclei, and efforts to improve our understanding of the internal structure of these short-distance and high-momentum configurations in nuclei will provide important input on a wide range of high-energy observables.

Abstract

Host genetics is a key determinant of COVID-19 outcomes. Previously, the COVID-19 Host Genetics Initiative genome-wide association study used common variants to identify multiple loci associated with COVID-19 outcomes. However, variants with the largest impact on COVID-19 outcomes are expected to be rare in the population. Hence, studying rare variants may provide additional insights into disease susceptibility and pathogenesis, thereby informing therapeutics development. Here, we combined whole-exome and whole-genome sequencing from 21 cohorts across 12 countries and performed rare variant exome-wide burden analyses for COVID-19 outcomes. In an analysis of 5,085 severe disease cases and 571,737 controls, we observed that carrying a rare deleterious variant in the SARS-CoV-2 sensor toll-like receptor TLR7 (on chromosome X) was associated with a 5.3-fold increase in severe disease (95% CI: 2.75-10.05, p = 5.41x10-7). This association was consistent across sexes. These results further support TLR7 as a genetic determinant of severe disease and suggest that larger studies on rare variants influencing COVID-19 outcomes could provide additional insights.

Abstract

Phenomenological amplitudes obtained in partial-wave analyses (PWA) of single-pion photoproduction are used to evaluate the contribution of this process to the Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn (GDH), Baldin and Gell-Mann-Goldberger-Thirring (GGT) sum rules, by integrating up to 2 GeV in photon energy. Our study confirms that the single-pion contribution to all these sum rules converges even before the highest considered photon energy, but the levels of saturation are very different in the three cases. Single-pion production almost saturates the GDH sum rule for the proton, while a large fraction is missing in the neutron case. The Baldin integrals for the proton and the neutron are both saturated to about four fifths of the predicted total strength. 26. Charged-averaged elastic lepton-proton scattering cross section results from OLYMPUS

Abstract

Measurements of the proton's form factor ratio made with polarization transfer show a striking discrepancy relative to the ratio extracted from unpolarized elastic electron-proton scattering cross sections. One hypothesis is that the discrepancy is caused by hard two-photon exchange (TPE), a typically neglected radiative correction that may bias the two approaches differently. This hypothesis has been challenging to confirm. Theoretical estimates of TPE are model-dependent, and recent experimental determinations of TPE lacked the kinematic reach to be conclusive. The possible impact of TPE remains a cloud over our knowledge of the proton's form factors. Recently, the OLYMPUS experiment published new elastic scattering cross sections that are insensitive to the effects of TPE: specifically the average of electron-proton and positron-proton cross sections. The OLYMPUS experiment, conducted at DESY, Hamburg, measured elastic $e^-p$ and $e^+p$ scattering by detecting the scattered lepton and recoiling proton in coincidence in a large-acceptance, toroidal magnetic spectrometer. OLYMPUS was designed to measure the $e^+p/e^-p$ cross section raio to isolate the effects of TPE. By exploiting the over determined kinematics of the reaction, the absolute efficiency of spectrometer could be verified, allowing cross sections to be extracted from the data. These results can help refine our knowledge of the proton's form factors, especially in the squared momentum-transfer region of 1--2 GeV$^2$, where some previous measurements are in tension., Comment: Proceedings from PANIC 2021, 6 pages, 3 figures (4 panels)

Abstract

High-accuracy $\Upsilon$-meson photoproduction data from EIC and EicC experiments will allow the measurement of the near-threshold total cross section of the reaction $\gamma p\to\Upsilon p$, from which the absolute value of the $\Upsilon p$ scattering length, $|\alpha_{\Upsilon p}|$, can be extracted using a Vector-Meson Dominance model. For this evaluation, we used $\Upsilon$-meson photoproduction quasi-data from the QCD approach (the production amplitude can be factorized in terms of gluonic generalized parton distributions and the quarkonium distribution amplitude). A comparative analysis of $|\alpha_{\Upsilon p}|$ with the recently determined scattering lengths for $\omega p$, $\phi p$, and $J/\psi p$ using the A2, CLAS, and GlueX experimental data are performed. 30. Measuring two photon exchange in elastic nuclear scattering with $e^+/e^-$ charge asymmetries

Abstract

Measurements of nuclear $\beta$-decay are commonly used to extract elements of the quark-mixing Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) matrix. The precision of these measurements is currently limited by theoretical uncertainties in electroweak radiative corrections (EWRC) arising from so-called box diagrams, which involve the exchange of two gauge bosons. Two photon exchange (TPE) is the most experimentally accessible of such processes, making it a natural choice for providing constraints on the theoretical frameworks used for calculating EWRC. The cross section asymmetry between elastic $e^+/e^-$ scattering is directly sensitive to this, as the TPE contribution to the cross section has opposite sign for electrons and positrons. While charge asymmetry measurements have been performed on proton targets, no such data exists for nuclear targets. Proposed here is a measurement of the $e^+/e^-$ charge asymmetry on various nuclei relevant to $\beta$-decay measurements used for CKM matrix extraction. 39. Direct TPE Measurement via $e^+p/e^-p$ Scattering at low $\varepsilon$ in Hall A

Abstract

The proton elastic form factor ratio can be measured either via Rosenbluth separation in an experiment with unpolarized beam and target, or via the use of polarization degrees of freedom. However, data produced by these two approaches show a discrepancy, increasing with $Q^2$. The proposed explanation of this discrepancy - two-photon exchange - has been tested recently by three experiments. The results support the existence of a small two-photon exchange effect but cannot establish that theoretical treatments at the measured momentum transfers are valid. At larger momentum transfers, theory remains untested, and without further data, it is impossible to resolve the discrepancy. A positron beam at Jefferson Lab allows us to directly measure two-photon exchange over an extended $Q^2$ and $\epsilon$ range with high precision. With this, we can validate whether the effect reconciles the form factor ratio measurements, and test several theoretical approaches, valid in different parts of the tested $Q^2$ range. In this proposal, we describe a measurement program in Hall A that combines the Super BigBite, BigBite, and High Resolution Spectrometers to directly measure the two-photon effect. Though the limited beam current of the positron beam will restrict the kinematic reach, this measurement will have very small systematic uncertainties, making it a clean probe of two photon exchange., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures, 1 table

Abstract

Current precision scattering experiments and even more so many experiments planed for the Electron Ion Collider will be limited by systematics. From the theory side, a fundamental source of systematic uncertainty is the correct treatment of radiative effects. To gauge the current state of technique and knowledge, help the cross-pollination between different direction of nuclear physics, and to give input to the yellow report process, the community met in an ad-hoc workshop hosted by the Center for Frontiers in Nuclear Science, Stony Brook University. Abstract

We propose a high-statistics measurement of few body nuclear structure and short range correlations in quasi-elastic scattering at 6.6 GeV from $^2$H, $^3$He and $^3$H targets in Hall B with the CLAS12 detector. We will measure absolute cross sections for $(e,e'p)$ and $(e,e'pN)$ quasi-elastic reaction channels up to a missing momentum $p_{miss} \approx 1$ GeV/c over a wide range of $Q^2$ and $x_B$ and construct the isoscalar sum of $^3$H and $^3$He. We will compare $(e,e'p)$ cross sections to nuclear theory predictions using a wide variety of techniques and $NN$ interactions in order to constrain the $NN$ interaction at short distances. We will measure $(e,e'pN)$ quasi-elastic reaction cross sections and $(e,e'pN)/(e,e'p)$ ratios to understand short range correlated (SRC) $NN$ pairs in the simplest non-trivial system. $^3$H and $^3$He, being mirror nuclei, exploit the maximum available isospin asymmetry. They are light enough that their ground states are readily calculable, but they already exhibit complex nuclear behavior, including $NN$ SRCs. We will also measure $^2$H$(e,e'p)$ in order to help theorists constrain non-quasielastic reaction mechanisms in order to better calculate reactions on $A=3$ nuclei. Measuring all three few body nuclei together is critical, in order to understand and minimize different reaction effects, such as single charge exchange final state interactions, in order to test ground-state nuclear models. We will also measure the ratio of inclusive $(e,e')$ quasi-elastic cross sections (integrated over $x_B$) from $^3$He and $^3$H in order to extract the neutron magnetic form factor $G_M^n$ at small and moderate values of $Q^2$. Abstract

We propose to create a secondary beam of neutral kaons in Hall D at Jefferson Lab to be used with the GlueX experimental setup for strange hadron spectroscopy. The superior CEBAF electron beam will enable a flux on the order of $1\times 10^4~K_L/sec$, which exceeds the flux of that previously attained at SLAC by three orders of magnitude. The use of a deuteron target will provide first measurements ever with neutral kaons on neutrons. The experiment will measure both differential cross sections and self-analyzed polarizations of the produced $\Lambda$, $\Sigma$, $\Xi$, and $\Omega$ hyperons using the GlueX detector at the Jefferson Lab Hall D. The measurements will span CM $\cos\theta$ from $-0.95$ to 0.95 in the range W = 1490 MeV to 2500 MeV. The new data will significantly constrain the partial wave analyses and reduce model-dependent uncertainties in the extraction of the properties and pole positions of the strange hyperon resonances, and establish the orbitally excited multiplets in the spectra of the $\Xi$ and $\Omega$ hyperons. Comparison with the corresponding multiplets in the spectra of the charm and bottom hyperons will provide insight into he accuracy of QCD-based calculations over a large range of masses. The proposed facility will have a defining impact in the strange meson sector through measurements of the final state $K\pi$ system up to 2 GeV invariant mass. This will allow the determination of pole positions and widths of all relevant $K^\ast(K\pi)$ $S$-,$P$-,$D$-,$F$-, and $G$-wave resonances, settle the question of the existence or nonexistence of scalar meson $\kappa/K_0^\ast(700)$ and improve the constrains on their pole parameters. Abstract

Introduction: There have been controversial studies on the impact of prior knee arthroscopy (KA) on outcomes of total knee arthroplasty (TKA). The purpose of this comparative study is to investigate the impact of prior KA of medial meniscus on patients undergoing TKA by evaluating the International Knee Society Score (IKS), the complications, and revisions. Methods: This retrospective study reviewed 84 patients with TKA who had undergone prior KA of the medial meniscus and compared them to 84 cases, without a history of prior KA as a control group. Outcomes were assessed with the original IKS scores and complications. The mean follow-up was 8 years. Results: There was no significant difference between groups with respect to demographics, or pre-operative IKS. The mean pre and postoperative IKS was not different between groups. The all-cause reoperation, revision, and complication rates of the KA group were not significantly higher than those of the control group. Conclusion: The present study seems to reveal that previous KA of the medial meniscus does not negatively affect a subsequent TKA. Nevertheless, larger studies may be necessary to confirm this observation.
