Proton-$\gamma$ coincidences from $(\mathrm{d},\mathrm{p})$ reactions between a $^{66}\mathrm{Ni}$ beam and a deuterated polyethylene target have been analyzed with the inverse-Oslo method to find the nuclear level density (NLD) and $\gamma$-ray strength function ($\gamma$SF) of $^{67}\mathrm{Ni}$. The $^{66}\mathrm{Ni}(\mathrm{n},\gamma)$ capture cross section has been calculated using the Hauser-Feshbach model in TALYS using the measured NLD and $\gamma$SF as constraints. The results confirm that the $^{66}\mathrm{Ni}(\mathrm{n},\gamma)$ reaction acts as a bottleneck when relying on one-zone nucleosynthesis calculations. However, the impact of this reaction is strongly damped in multi-zone low-metallicity AGB stellar models experiencing i-process nucleosynthesis., Comment: Submitted to Phys. Rev. C

The European 1 MW, 170 GHz CW industrial prototype gyrotron for ECRH&CD on ITER was under test at the KIT test facility during 2016. In order to optimize the gyrotron operation, the tube was thoroughly tested in the short-pulse regime, with pulse lengths below 10 ms, for a wide range of operational parameters. The operation was extended to longer pulses with a duration of up to 180 s. In this work we present in detail the achievements and the challenges that were faced during the long-pulse experimental campaign.

Astrophysics - Solar and Stellar Astrophysics - Abstract
A detailed investigation of the magnetic properties of young Sun-like stars can provide valuable information on our Sun's magnetic past and its impact on the early Earth. We determine the properties of the moderately rotating young Sun-like star kappa Ceti's magnetic and activity cycles using 50 years of chromospheric activity data and six epochs of spectropolarimetric observations. The chromospheric activity was determined by measuring the flux in the Ca II H and K lines. A generalised Lomb-Scargle periodogram and a wavelet decomposition were used on the chromospheric activity data to establish the associated periodicities. The vector magnetic field of the star was reconstructed using the technique of Zeeman Doppler imaging on the spectropolarimetric observations. Our period analysis algorithms detect a 3.1 year chromospheric cycle in addition to the star's well-known ~6 year cycle period. Although the two cycle periods have an approximate 1:2 ratio, they exhibit an unusual temporal evolution. Additionally, the spectropolarimetric data analysis shows polarity reversals of the star's large-scale magnetic field, suggesting a ~10 year magnetic or Hale cycle. The unusual evolution of the star's chromospheric cycles and their lack of a direct correlation with the magnetic cycle establishes kappa Ceti as a curious young Sun. Such complex evolution of magnetic activity could be synonymous with moderately active young Suns, which is an evolutionary path that our own Sun could have taken., Comment: 15 pages including appendices, accepted for publication in A&A

Physics ,QC1-999 - Abstract
The investigation of the excitation energies of the 21+ –states in the neutron-rich Cd isotopes shows an irregular behaviour when approaching the neutron shell-closure at N = 82. The energy of the 21+–state in 128Cd is lower than the one in 126Cd. The transition strength B(E2, 0gs+ → 21+) in the even isotopes 122−128Cd was measured in Coulomb excitation experiments with the high-purity germanium detector array MINIBALL at REXISOLDE (CERN). The values for 122,124Cd coincide with beyond-mean-field calculations with a resultant prolate deformation, whereas 126,128Cd are better described by shell-model calculations.

EXL (EXotic nuclei studied in Light-ion induced reactions at the NESR storage ring) is a project within NUSTAR at FAIR. It aims at investigations of light-ion induced direct reactions in inverse kinematics with radioactive ions cooled and stored in the future NESR (New Experimental Storage Ring). The existing ESR (Experimental Storage Ring) at GSI, together with its internal gas-jet target, provides a unique opportunity to perform such kind of experiments on a smaller scale at the present time. We have developed a UHV-compatible (Ultra High Vacuum) detector setup mainly based on DSSDs (Double-sided Silicon-Strip Detector) for the target-like recoils [4]. With this setup we were able to successfully investigate reactions with a stored radioactive beam for the first time ever. As a part of the first EXL campaign we investigated the reaction 56Ni(p,p)56Ni in inverse kinematics in order to measure the differential cross section for elastic proton scattering and deduce the nuclear-matter distribution and radius of 56Ni. In the following, the experimental setup is introduced in more detail, and the current status of the ongoing analysis is discussed.

Renewable energy sources ,TJ807-830 - Abstract
An efficient tandem solar cell requires a top cell which is highly transparent below the energy gap of its absorber. Previously we had reported on a theoretically optimized CuGaSe2 top cell stack based on realistic material properties. It promised a significant increase in optical transparency and, consequently, enhanced CuGaSe2/Cu(In,Ga)Se2 tandem efficiency. Here we present the first steps taken towards the experimental realization of this optimized tandem. We started with a mechanically stacked device which achieved 8.5% efficiency. Optical measurements of the improved top cells and corresponding photo current densities of the filtered bottom cell are reported. The experimental findings are in agreement with the optical modeling. These data are used to assess the level of tandem performance that could be accomplished in the near future and to discuss the priorities of further research.

Condensed Matter - Strongly Correlated Electrons - Abstract
The electric-current stabilized semi-metallic state in the quasi-two-dimensional Mott insulator Ca$_2$RuO$_4$ exhibits an exceptionally strong diamagnetism. Through a comprehensive study using neutron and X-ray diffraction, we show that this non-equilibrium phase assumes a crystal structure distinct from those of equilibrium metallic phases realized in the ruthenates by chemical doping, high pressure and epitaxial strain, which in turn leads to a distinct electronic band structure. Dynamical mean field theory calculations based on the crystallographically refined atomic coordinates and realistic Coulomb repulsion parameters indicate a semi-metallic state with partially gapped Fermi surface. Our neutron diffraction data show that the non-equilibrium behavior is homogeneous, with antiferromagnetic long-range order completely suppressed. These results provide a new basis for theoretical work on the origin of the unusual non-equilibrium diamagnetism in Ca$_2$RuO$_4$., Comment: 12 pages, 3 figures, 1 table

Condensed Matter - Materials Science - Abstract
Iron oxides play an increasingly prominent role in heterogeneous catalysis, hydrogen production, spintronics and drug delivery. The surface or material interface can be performance limiting in these applications, so it is vital to determine accurate atomic-scale structures for iron oxides and understand why they form. Using a combination of quantitative low-energy electron diffraction, scanning tunneling microscopy, and density functional theory calculations, we show that an ordered array of subsurface iron vacancies and interstitials underlies the well-known (rt2xrt2)R45{\deg} reconstruction of Fe3O4(001). This hitherto unobserved stabilization mechanism occurs because the iron oxides prefer to redistribute cations in the lattice in response to oxidizing or reducing environments. Many other metal oxides also achieve stoichiometric variation in this way, so such surface structures are likely commonplace.

- Abstract
Traditional automotive proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) endurance testing relies on the fuel cell (FC) dynamic load cycle (FC‐DLC) protocol, which inadequately reflects real‐world driving conditions. To address this limitation the "Investigations on degradation mechanisms and Definition of protocols for PEM Fuel cells Accelerated Stress Testing" (ID‐FAST) consortium defined the new representative "ID‐FAST driving load cycle," a novel approach capturing the load distribution, transitions, temperature variations, and humidity fluctuations experienced by FCs in real‐world operation. We demonstrate the ID‐FAST driving cycle itself and the integration into a realistic durability test program for FC test benches and present the resulting test data. Furthermore, we showcase its implementation within an accelerated stress testing (AST) protocol, highlighting its potential to significantly reduce testing time by accelerating degradation. Additionally, a novel method for highly dynamic humidity adjustment within test benches is introduced. By overcoming limitations of existing methods and incorporating the ID‐FAST driving cycle, this work paves the way for a new era of efficient and realistic FC endurance testing, ultimately contributing to the development of more robust and durable automotive FC stacks. Transverse magneto-thermoelectric effects are studied in permalloy thin films grown on MgO substrates. We find that small parasitic magnetic fields below 1 Oe can produce artifacts of the order of 1 % of the amplitude of the anisotropic magneto-thermopower which is also detected in the experiments. The measured artifacts reveal a new source of uncertainties for the detection of the transverse spin Seebeck effect. Taking these results into account we conclude that the contribution of the transverse spin Seebeck effect to the detected voltages is below the noise level of 20 nV., Comment: 9 pages

Recent photoluminescence experiments presented by M. Binder et al. [Appl. Phys. Lett. 103, 071108 (2013)] demonstrated the visualization of high-energy carriers generated by Auger recombination in (AlInGa)N multi quantum wells. Two fundamental limitations were deduced which reduce the detection efficiency of Auger processes contributing to the reduction in internal quantum efficiency: the capture probability of these hot electrons and holes in a detection well and the asymmetry in type of Auger recombination. We investigate the transport and capture properties of these high-energy carriers regarding polarization fields, the capture distance to the generating well and the capture volume. All three factors are shown to have a noticeable impact on the detection of these hot particles. Furthermore, the investigations support the finding that electron-electron-hole exceeds electron-hole-hole Auger recombination if the densities of both carrier types are similar. Overall, the results add to the evidence that Auger processes play an important role in the reduction of efficiency in (AlInGa)N based LEDs.

A physical model is presented for a semiconductor electrode of a photoelectrochemical (PEC) cell, accounting for the potential drop in the Helmholtz layer. Hence both band edge pinning and unpinning are naturally included in our description. The model is based on the continuity equations for charge carriers and direct charge transfer from the energy bands to the electrolyte. A quantitative calculation of the position of the energy bands and the variation of the quasi-Fermi levels in the semiconductor with respect to the water reduction and oxidation potentials is presented. Calculated current-voltage curves are compared with established analytical models and measurement. Our model calculations are suitable to enhance understanding and improve properties of semiconductors for photoelectrochemical water splitting., Comment: 20 pages single column, 5 figures, 2 tables, submission to ACS

- Abstract
The original version of this Article omitted from the author list the 212th author Patrizia Mecocci, who is from the Institute of Gerontology and Geriatrics, Department of Medicine, University of Perugia, Perugia, Italy. Consequently, the “Sample Contribution” section of Author Contributions was updated to add “P.M” between “P.D.” and “R.C.”. Additionally, the original version of this Article contained the incorrect affiliation for author Patrick Gavin Kehoe, which incorrectly read “German Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases (DZNE), Berlin, Germany”. The correct version replaces this affiliation with “Bristol Medical School (THS), University of Bristol, Southmead Hospital, Bristol, UK”. This has been corrected in both the PDF and HTML versions of the Article.

Condensed Matter - Mesoscale and Nanoscale Physics - Abstract
Transverse magneto-thermoelectric effects are studied in permalloy thin films grown on MgO and GaAs substrates and compared to those grown on suspended SiN membranes. The transverse voltage along platinum strips patterned on top of the permalloy films is measured vs. the external magnetic field as a function of angle and temperature gradient. After the identification of the contribution of the planar and anomalous Nernst effects, we find an upper limit for the transverse spin Seebeck effect, which is several orders of magnitude smaller than previously reported.

Astrophysics - Instrumentation and Methods for Astrophysics ,Nuclear Experiment - Abstract
The nucleosynthesis of elements beyond iron is dominated by neutron captures in the s and r processes. However, 32 stable, proton-rich isotopes cannot be formed during those processes, because they are shielded from the s-process flow and r-process beta-decay chains. These nuclei are attributed to the p and rp process. For all those processes, current research in nuclear astrophysics addresses the need for more precise reaction data involving radioactive isotopes. Depending on the particular reaction, direct or inverse kinematics, forward or time-reversed direction are investigated to determine or at least to constrain the desired reaction cross sections. The Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR) will offer unique, unprecedented opportunities to investigate many of the important reactions. The high yield of radioactive isotopes, even far away from the valley of stability, allows the investigation of isotopes involved in processes as exotic as the r or rp processes., Comment: Invited Talk given at the Conference Nuclear Physice in Astrophysics VI (NPA6), Lisbon, Portugal, May 19-24 2013. To appear in the NPA6 Proceedings in Journal of Physics: Conference Series (JPCS)

We report on the enhancement of antiferromagnetic coupling in epitaxial Fe/Si/Fe structures by voltage-driven spin-polarized tunneling currents. Using the ballistic electron magnetic microscopy we established that the hot-electron collector current reflects magnetization alignment and the magnetocurrent exceeds 200% at room temperature. The saturation magnetic field for collector current corresponding to parallel alignment of magnetizations rises up with the tunneling current, thus demonstrating stabilization of the antiparallel alignment and increasing antiferromagnetic coupling. We connect the enhancement of antiferromagnetic coupling with local dynamic spin torques mediated by tunneling electrons, Comment: Submitted to the Applied Physics Letters Journal

Nuclear Experiment - Abstract
The method of pulse-shape analysis (PSA) for particle identification (PID) was applied to a double-sided silicon strip detector (DSSD) with a strip pitch of 300 \{mu}m. We present the results of test measurements with particles from the reactions of a 70 MeV 12C beam impinging on a mylar target. Good separation between protons and alpha particles down to 3 MeV has been obtained when excluding the interstrip events of the DSSD from the analysis., Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures, submitted to Nuclear Inst. and Methods in Physics Research A
