Abstract

Organic matter (OM) management is a critical component in sustainable turfgrass management. Organic matter improves the soils’ ability to hold nutrients and water. However, when OM accumulation is excessive, several detrimental effects develop. Turfgrass is a tillering plant, producing a considerable amount of lateral growth, which will cause inordinate OM accumulation. The objectives of this chapter are to outline how OM effects turfgrass, the available methods for monitoring and measuring OM accumulation, outline correlations between OM levels and disease activity/microbial populations, and identify successful OM management practices.

Abstract

Liquid applications of nutrients to turfgrass are a routine management practice. A better understanding of nutrient chelating chemistry coupled with a measurable increase in products marketed to turfgrass professionals purported to facilitate effective and efficient absorption of nutrients into turfgrass leaves has resulted in a need for a better understanding of the capacity of turfgrass species to absorb essential nutrient elements. Research was conducted with the objectives to 1) determine the foliar uptake of nutrients in solution to Creeping Bentgrass (Agrostis palustris Huds.), Annual Bluegrass (Poa annua var. reptans (Hausskn.) Timm) and Ultra-Dwarf Bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon x C. transvaalensis Burtt-Davy).and 2) determine temporal, location and seasonal differences in foliar uptake among these same species. Based on the results of this study it was found that foliar uptake was significantly affected by source of nutrient with organic chelating agent, when differences were identified, facilitating greater uptake vs. synthetic (i.e. EDTA) chelation. Time of year affected absorption efficiency with cooler temperature resulting in lower uptake. This is speculated to be highly influenced by ambient temperatures at time of application. Volatility losses were not measured in this study so caution should be exercised for interpretation of nitrogen results, especially NH4. The species investigated exhibited appreciable uptake of nutrients applied in solution. Liquid applications and more specifically, organically chelated foliar products, could reduce total nutrient applications and decrease potential for surface and ground water contamination due to decreased migration of select nutrients to the root zone.

8. Influence of nutrient management and soil pH on anthracnose severity of annual bluegrass putting green turf

Abstract

Anthracnose (Colletotrichum cereale Manns sensu lato Crouch, Clarke, and Hillman) is a fungal disease of annual bluegrass [Poa annua L. f. reptans (Hausskn) T. Koyama; ABG] turf, which can be intensified when abiotic conditions weaken turfgrass plants. Five field trials conducted from 2009 to 2015 evaluated the effects of N program, soluble N rate, N source, K source and rate, and soil pH on anthracnose severity of ABG maintained as putting green turf. Soluble N rate applied during midseason had the greatest influence on anthracnose severity. Granular N rate and season in which the majority of granular N was applied also influenced disease severity but to a lesser extent. Soluble N applied at 73 kg N ha-1 yr-1 in combination with moderate rates (147 or 220 kg N ha-1 yr-1 ) of granular N applied during the spring resulted in the greatest reduction in disease severity. Further analysis of the influence of soluble N rate on anthracnose severity found that higher rates (14.6 to 24.4 kg N ha-1 wk-1 ) of soluble N can be applied from late-spring through early-summer to reduce disease severity, but as the summer progresses moderate (9.8 kg N ha-1 wk-1 ) to low (4.9 kg N ha-1 wk-1 ) rates of soluble N should be applied to avoid excessive rates of N increasing disease severity. Playability (i.e. ball roll distance) of ABG turf was reduced by rates of soluble N applied at ≥ 14.6 kg ha-1 wk-1 compared to N applied at 4.9 kg ha-1 wk-1 . Basic N sources (potassium nitrate and calcium nitrate) applied at 4.9 kg N ha-1 every 7-d reduced disease severity compared acidic N sources (ammonium nitrate and ammonium sulfate) applied at the same rate and frequency; however, when N was applied at 4.9 kg ha-1 every 14-d, disease severity was greater and few differences were seen among N sources. Potassium (K) fertilization reduced anthracnose severity regardless of K rate or K source. Critical soil K and leaf K concentration values affecting anthracnose severity were calculated to range from 43 to 70 mg kg-1 (Mehlich 3) and 19.3 to 23.1 g kg-1 , respectively, using nonlinear regression models (Cate-Nelson, linear plateau, and quadratic plateau). Plots with moderately acidic soil (pH < 5.5) and deficiencies in extractable soil Ca increased disease severity compared to plots with neutral (to slightly acidic) soil pH and adequate soil Ca. Optimum soil pH for reducing anthracnose severity and maintaining acceptable turfgrass quality of ABG putting green turf was between pH 6.0 and 6.5 and critical soil Ca concentrations ranged from 392 to 825 mg kg-1 . It is not clear whether acidic soil conditions and/or deficiencies in extractable Ca caused increased anthracnose severity and a reduction in turfgrass performance. Taken together, these studies clearly indicate that best management practices that include proper plant nutrition and possibly modification of soil pH are effective at reducing anthracnose severity and should be incorporated into an integrated disease control program.

Abstract

The western portion of the Pacific Northwest is known for being dry in the summer and cool and humid in the other months. Tall fescue is valued for its drought and heat tolerance, making it a desirable choice in regions where water is scarce and often restricted by legislation during periods of drought in the summer. However, cool and humid climates make it challenging to manage tall fescue in the winter because unacceptable quality is often observed due to low-temperature diseases and thinning in turf. A field trial was initiated in Autumn 2020 in Corvallis, OR, USA to assess the effects of mowing height as well as fertility timing and rate on tall fescue performance. Two mowing heights of 5.1 and 7.6 cm, four seasonal fertility timings, and three levels of annual N rates of 98, 196, and 294 kg⋅ha-1⋅yr-1 were evaluated using a 2 x 4 x 3 factorial experiment in a strip-plot design. Quantitative data of percent green cover and normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) suggest that autumn fertilization is needed in cool, humid areas where tall fescue is actively growing in the winter months. The annual fertilization rate of 294 kg⋅ha-1⋅yr-1 N produced higher green turf cover and NDVI, compared with 98 or 196 kg⋅ha-1⋅yr-1 N. Furthermore, divergent effects of mowing heights were observed during winter compared with other months, suggesting that tall fescue could be mowed lower at 5.1 cm during cool, humid winter months and higher at 7.6 cm in other seasons for better overall turfgrass growth and less winter disease and thinning. Our research provides practical cultural practices for managing tall fescue turf in the Pacific Northwest or similar climates. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
