In an experimental study the localisation and activity of hog-pancreatic Kallikrein was investigated immunologically and enzymatically in the testis and epididymis. A concentration of Kallikrein was observed in the Ductus epididymis, but the same could not be seen in the germinal epithelium of the testes.

Allogeneic and xenogeneic biological tendon and ligament materials for ligament replacement were tested in the knee of rabbits and sheep. In-vitro and ex-vivo biomechanical tests as well as micromorphological investigations following implantation were performed. The preparation procedure mainly consists in cross linking of collagen by dicarboxylic acids (DC). Modifications in the method induce changes in the biomechanical stability also after implantation. Sheep with autologous patellar tendons substitutions and glutaraldehyde (GA) fixed bovine tendons served as controls. Because of biocompatibility reasons the later seem to be not yet suitable for clinical applications. The DC-tendons need for improved midterm stability prior to clinical implantations; the biocompatibility appears to be excellent.

Alterations on the upper urinary-tract and on the kidney have been investigated by histology and scanning-electron-microscopy (SEM) in an animal study on the rat. Examinations have been performed 7, 14, 28 and 56 days after double-ligating the ureter. The documentation shows the developed alterations which are remarkable in the area of the papilla and medulla of the kidney, whereas the glomerula are nearly unchanged in comparison with the controls. At the same time function-tests with radioactively labelled Jodium-Hippuran and technetium-DTPA have been performed. The nephrograms in the region of interest technique showed after 14 days isosthenuria and after 4 weeks no signs of any function on the operated side.

Standardised enterotomies of the rat ileum were performed by conventional enterorrhaphy and in combination with the fibrin adhesion technique. When enterotomy is also sealed with fibrin adhesive, the initial bursting strength is significantly higher. In the postoperative course this is only valid if a successful inhibition of fibrinolysis can be achieved by adding fibrinolytic inhibitors. Histochemical investigations of tissue enzyme activities confirm these findings.

The paper reports experience with methods of anaesthesia in rabbits, rats, mice, guinea-pigs, pigs, sheep, baboons, dogs and cats. Special problems of handling, mode of injection and intubation are discussed. A comprehensive survey of literature provides further information about the proposed patterns of anaesthesia and informs about other anaesthetic methods, not practised by the authors.

Different temperatures, freeze techniques, and durations of storage for cryopreservation of allogeneic spongious bone were studied in an experimental model. Low temperatures (-70 degrees C to 196 degrees C) without cryoprotectants proved to be favorable in micromorphological as well as scintigraphic analyses. These transplants seem to be equivalent to fresh autologous transplants - at least in animal experiments. Medium-term durations of storage (3 mo) at low temperatures yield the best osteoinductive capacity. Long term storage (12 months) and radiosterilization reduce the quality of the allogeneic bone. The clinical results in 495 transplantations of cryopreserved allogeneic spongious bone confirm the experimental findings.
