Let $M$ be a convex polytope with non-empty interior in a finite dimensional vector space, such that each vertex of $M$ is contained in exactly $n$ edges of $M$. The Lie group of all smooth diffeomorphisms of $M$ contains the Lie subgroup of all diffeomorphisms which restrict to the identity on the boundary of the polytope. We give the quotient of the diffeomorphism group mod subgroup a Lie group structure. This construction turns the canonical quotient homomorphism into a smooth submersion, and we then obtain related results. We construct a smooth Banach manifold BV$([a,b], M)$ whose elements are suitably-defined functions $f:[a,b] \rightarrow M$ of bounded variation with values in a smooth Banach manifold $M$ which admits a local addition. In this article we consider diffeomorphism groups of manifolds with smooth boundary. We show that the diffeomorphism groups of the manifold and its boundary fit into a short exact sequence which admits local sections. In other words, they form an infinite-dimensional fibre bundle. Manifolds with boundary are of interest in numerical analysis and with a view towards applications in machine learning we establish controllability results for families of vector fields. This generalises older results due to Agrachev and Caponigro in the boundary-less case. The Ebin-Marsden theory is a powerful geometric framework for many PDEs from fluid dynamics. In this paper we provide a toolbox to apply the Ebin-Marsden approach to stochastic PDEs, combining tools from infinite-dimensional geometry and stochastic analysis. We showcase our approach in the context of incompressible Euler equation for an ideal fluid with additive noise. The goal of this paper is to establish some facts concerning the problem of zeroing the output of an input-output system that does not have relative degree. The approach taken is to work with systems that have a Chen-Fliess series representation. The main result is that a class of generating series called primely nullable series provides the building blocks for solving this problem using the shuffle algebra. It is shown that the shuffle algebra on the set of generating polynomials is a unique factorization domain so that any polynomial can be uniquely factored modulo a permutation into its irreducible elements for the purpose of identifying nullable factors. This is achieved using the fact that this shuffle algebra is isomorphic to the symmetric algebra over the vector space spanned by Lyndon words. A specific algorithm for factoring generating polynomials into its irreducible factors is presented based on the Chen-Fox-Lyndon factorization of words.

One of the fundamental problems in shape analysis is to align curves or surfaces before computing geodesic distances between their shapes. Finding the optimal reparametrization realizing this alignment is a computationally demanding task, typically done by solving an optimization problem on the diffeomorphism group. In this paper, we propose an algorithm for constructing approximations of orientation-preserving diffeomorphisms by composition of elementary diffeomorphisms. The algorithm is implemented using PyTorch, and is applicable for both unparametrized curves and surfaces. We prove a topological decomposition of the space of meromorphic germs at zero in several variables with prescribed linear poles as a sum of spaces of holomorphic and polar germs. Evaluating the resulting holomorphic projection at zero gives rise to a continuous evaluator (at zero) on the space of meromorphic germs in several variables. Our constructions are carried out in the framework of Silva spaces and use an inner product on the underlying space of variables. We prove that the spaces of controlled (branched) rough paths of arbitrary order form a continuous field of Banach spaces. This structure has many similarities to an (infinite-dimensional) vector bundle and allows to define a topology on the total space, the collection of all controlled path spaces, which turns out to be Polish in the geometric case. The construction is intrinsic and based on a new approximation result for controlled rough paths. This framework turns well-known maps such as the rough integration map and the It\^o-Lyons map into continuous (structure preserving) mappings. The present document is the draft of a book which presents an introduction to infinite-dimensional differential geometry beyond Banach manifolds. As is well known the usual calculus breaks down in this setting. Hence, we replace it by the more general Bastiani calculus which is built using directional derivatives. We then focus on two main areas of infinite-dimensional geometry: 1. infinite-dimensional Lie groups, and 2. weak Riemannian geometry. Both topics are developed and connected to manifolds of (smooth) mappings. These manifolds are studied in detail to construct important examples such as diffeomorphism groups, loop groups and Riemannian metrics for shape analysis. Manifolds of mappings are prime examples for surprising connections between finite and infinite-dimensional geometry. However, also pathologies occurring in infinite-dimensions will be highlighted in many examples. We study the Newman--Unti (NU) group from the viewpoint of infinite-dimensional geometry. The NU group is a topological group in a natural coarse topology, but it does not become a manifold and hence a Lie group in this topology. To obtain a manifold structure we consider a finer Whitney-type topology. This turns the unit component of the NU group into an infinite-dimensional Lie group. We then study the Lie theoretic properties of this group. Surprisingly, the group operations of the full NU group become discontinuous, whence the NU group does not support a Lie group structure. The NU group contains the Bondi--Metzner--Sachs (BMS) group as a subgroup, whose Lie group structure was constructed in a previous article. It is well known that the NU Lie algebra splits into a direct sum of Lie ideals of the Lie algebras of the BMS group and conformal rescalings of scri. Given smooth manifolds $M_1,\ldots, M_n$ (which may have a boundary or corners), a smooth manifold $N$ modeled on locally convex spaces and $\alpha\in({\mathbb N}_0\cup\{\infty\})^n$, we consider the set $C^\alpha(M_1\times\cdots\times M_n,N)$ of all mappings $f\colon M_1\times\cdots\times M_n\to N$ which are $C^\alpha$ in the sense of Alzaareer. We study the Lie group structure of asymptotic symmetry groups in General Relativity from the viewpoint of infinite-dimensional geometry. To this end, we review the geometric definition of asymptotic simplicity and emptiness due to Penrose and the coordinate-wise definition of asymptotic flatness due to Bondi et al. Then we construct the Lie group structure of the Bondi--Metzner--Sachs (BMS) group and discuss its Lie theoretic properties. We find that the BMS group is regular in the sense of Milnor, but not real analytic. This motivates us to conjecture that it is not locally exponential. Finally, we verify the Trotter property as well as the commutator property. As an outlook, we comment on the situation of related asymptotic symmetry groups. Formal power series products appear in nonlinear control theory when systems modeled by Chen-Fliess series are interconnected to form new systems. In fields like adaptive control and learning systems, the coefficients of these formal power series are estimated sequentially with real-time data. The main goal of the present article is to prove the continuity and analyticity of such products with respect to several natural (locally convex) topologies on spaces of locally convergent formal power series in order to establish foundational properties behind these technologies. Similar to ordinary differential equations, rough paths and rough differential equations can be formulated in a Banach space setting. For $\alpha\in (1/3,1/2)$, we give criteria for when we can approximate Banach space-valued weakly geometric $\alpha$-rough paths by signatures of curves of bounded variation, given some tuning of the H\"older parameter. We show that these criteria are satisfied for weakly geometric rough paths on Hilbert spaces. Model continuity plays an important role in applications like system identification, adaptive control, and machine learning. This paper provides sufficient conditions under which input-output systems represented by locally convergent Chen-Fliess series are jointly continuous with respect to their generating series and as operators mapping a ball in an $L_p$-space to a ball in an $L_q$-space, where $p$ and $q$ are conjugate exponents. The starting point is to introduce a class of topological vector spaces known as Silva spaces to frame the problem and then to employ the concept of a direct limit to describe convergence. In this note we construct an infinite-dimensional Lie group structure on the group of vertical bisections of a regular Lie groupoid. We then identify the Lie algebra of this group and discuss regularity properties (in the sense of Milnor) for these Lie groups. If the groupoid is locally trivial, i.e. a gauge groupoid, the vertical bisections coincide with the gauge group of the underlying bundle. Hence the construction recovers the well known Lie group structure of the gauge groups. Endowing differentiable functions from a compact manifold to a Lie group with the pointwise group operations one obtains the so-called current groups and, as a special case, loop groups. These are prime examples of infinite-dimensional Lie groups modelled on locally convex spaces. In the present paper, we generalise this construction and show that differentiable mappings on a compact manifold (possibly with boundary) with values in a Lie groupoid form infinite-dimensional Lie groupoids which we call current Lie groupoids. We then study basic differential geometry and Lie theory for these Lie groupoids of mappings. In particular, we show that certain Lie groupoid properties, like being a proper \'etale Lie groupoid, are inherited by the current groupoid. Furthermore, we identify the Lie algebroid of a current Lie groupoid as a current Lie algebroid (analogous to the current Lie algebra associated to a current Lie group). To establish these results, we study superposition operators given by postcomposition with a fixed function, between manifolds of $C^\ell$-functions. Under natural hypotheses, these operators turn out to be a submersion (an immersion, an embedding, proper, resp., a local diffeomorphism) if so is the underlying map. The present paper links the representation theory of Lie groupoids and infinite-dimensional Lie groups. We show that smooth representations of Lie groupoids give rise to smooth representations of associated Lie groups. The groups envisaged here are the bisection group and a group of groupoid self maps. Then representations of the Lie groupoids give rise to representations of the infinite-dimensional Lie groups on spaces of (compactly supported) bundle sections. Endowing the spaces of bundle sections with a fine Whitney type topology, the fine very strong topology, we even obtain continuous and smooth representations. It is known that in the topological category, this correspondence can be reversed for certain topological groupoids. We consider a global, nonlinear version of the Whitney extension problem for manifold-valued smooth functions on closed domains $C$, with non-smooth boundary, in possibly non-compact manifolds. Character groups of Hopf algebras appear in a variety of mathematical and physical contexts. To name just a few, they arise in non-commutative geometry, renormalisation of quantum field theory, and numerical analysis. In the present article we review recent results on the structure of character groups of Hopf algebras as infinite-dimensional (pro-)Lie groups. It turns out that under mild assumptions on the Hopf algebra or the target algebra the character groups possess strong structural properties. Moreover, these properties are of interest in applications of these groups outside of Lie theory.
