Relative to soluble N sources, enhanced-efficiency fertilizers (EEFs) support steady turfgrass growth and dense canopy quality while abating N loss as nitrate, ammonia, and/or N2O from turfgrass systems. Modern EEFs provide turfgrass managers greater operational effect and versatility in their nutrient management efforts and compel field characterization of their temporal response. Likewise, field confirmation of commercial EEF nutrient recovery helps stakeholders select the appropriate EEF for their specific application. Our research objective was to quantify the temporal response of Kentucky bluegrass growth/yield, canopy density and color, and fertilizer N recovery to a practical application of conventional urea or an enhanced-efficiency granular fertilizer. In May 2014 and June 2018, Kentucky bluegrass plots were fertilized by granules of conventional urea, N-(n-butyl) thiophosphoric triamide (NBPT)-, and dicyandiamide (DCD)-stabilized urea, or polymer-/sulfur-coated urea (PSCU) at a N rate of 43.9 kg ha−1 (0.9 lbs/1000 sq. ft.). The dependent variable response over the two growing seasons was highly affected by efficiency enhancement. Following the repeated 16.5-week evaluations, the mean percent of fertilizer N recovered from conventional urea, stabilized urea, and PSCU totaled 57.5, 68.4, and 89.1%, respectively. Nitrogen (N) is the essential plant nutrient needed by turfgrass in the greatest quantity. Urea and urea-based liquids are arguably the safest, least expensive, and subsequently most popular soluble N fertilizers. Unfortunately, urea fertilizer application to turfgrass is often subject to NH3 volatilization: a deleterious phenomenon from both environmental and agronomic perspectives. The objective of this research was to quantify the efficacy of creeping bentgrass (Agrostis stolonifera L.) golf course fairway foliar fertilization by urea-based N fertilizers as influenced by a petroleum-derived spray oil (PDSO) containing Cu II phthalocyanine colorant (Civitas Turf DefenseTM Pre-M1xed, Intelligro LLC, Mississauga, ON, Canada). In 2019 and 2020, a maintained creeping bentgrass fairway received semimonthly 9.76 kg ha–1 soluble N treatment either alone or in combination with Civitas at a rate of 27 L ha–1. In the 48 h following foliar application, fertilizer N loss as NH3 ranged from 1.3 to 5.5% and corresponded directly to fertilizer urea content but not Civitas inclusion. In the 1 to 14 d following semimonthly treatment, Civitas had either a beneficial (methylol urea and UAN) or negligible (urea) effect on canopy mean dark green color index. Once cumulative N inputs exceeded 47 kg ha–1, creeping bentgrass fairway shoot growth and N nutrition were consistently increased by Civitas complementation of commercial liquid N fertilizer. Over the 2-yr study, absolute mean percent fertilizer N recovery from plots treated by Civitas-complemented foliar liquid N treatment exceeded their 'N only' counterparts by 8.7%. While not classified as an essential plant nutrient, silicon (Si) assimilation following exogenous Si application has enhanced the wear resistance of cool-season turfgrass. Given this beneficial supplementation of lignin by Si reported in epidermal tissue of monocotyledonous plants, our research objective was to quantify root morphology, vegetative nutrition and vigor, soil chemistry, and putting green performance in response to split applications of pelletized liming agents rich in Si and/or Ca and Mg. Field evaluation of granular liming agent treatment, 2441 kg (ha year)−1, was conducted on creeping bentgrass (Agrostis stolonifera L. cv. Penn G-2) putting green maintained in the Mid-Atlantic US. Pelletized Ca/Mg-SiO3 slag or dolomitic limestone treatments were conducted in frequent split applications and incorporated into the upper 5 cm of the rootzone. Measurements of canopy color and density, shoot growth as clipping yield, soil pH, Si and nutrient content of clippings, and soil extractable Si were performed each season. Cumulative Ca/Mg-SiO3 application (kg ha−1) increased mean acetic acid (HOAc) extractable Si by 35 to 60 mg kg−1 and leaf Si content by 1.0 to 1.5 mg g−1. However, neither putting green canopy quality, shoot nutrient concentration, 5 to 15 cm depth root length density nor ball roll distance was improved by liming agent treatment. Liming agent-treated or untreated plots showed statistical, yet inconsistent, differences in clipping yield 4, 14, 15, 16, and 17 months from initiation (MFI). Of the many opportunities available upon graduating, most turfgrass management/turfgrass science students seek assistant golf course superintendent positions. By tradition, faculty are responsible for preparing graduates to serve as capable assistant superintendents. Moreover, faculty are queried for guidance on how to best compete for these assistant positions. Our objectives were to develop relative rankings of educational credentials, skills, and experience most desired by superintendents when hiring assistants; and to determine whether these rankings vary by geographic region, type of golf course facility, superintendent education level, or number of years experience. Approximately 400 golf course superintendents responded to a national survey in early 2000. Respondents indicated work experience, education, communication skills, appearance, and references to be the first through fifth-most important hiring criteria used to evaluate assistant applicants, respectively. The majority of responding superintendents identified crew supervision as the most important technical work experience and an associate's degree or certificate as the minimum educational requirement. Ranking of hiring criteria did not vary, but superintendents of specific regions had differing opinions on the importance of golfing ability, pesticide license possession, and irrigation experience. Superintendents of private golf courses weighed applicant appearance more heavily than superintendents of golf courses accessible to the public. The minimum education required of applicants corresponded directly to the educational level of the superintendent. Particulate organic matter (OM) and surface area-limited sands are associated with soil water repellency (SWR) in turfgrass systems. The increasing ubiquity of amended sand rootzones warrants investigation of factors contributing to SWR. Our objective was to identify how amendment type and/or inclusion rate affect rootzone SWR over a range of irrigation regimes. A U.S. Golf Association-specified sand was amended with dried turfgrass roots and either sphagnum peat moss (SPM), reed sedge peat (RSP), biosolid compost (BSC), or calcined clay (CC) at 0, 0.1, or 0.2 [m.sup.3] [m.sup.-3]. Mixes were saturated, gravitationally drained, incubated under isothermal ventilation having mean vapor pressures of 1.78, 2.19, or 2.45 kPa, and reirrigated when matric tension exceeded 300 kPa. After 138 d, rootzone subsamples were eluted of particulate OM before measuring mineral-adsorbed hydrocarbon content (MAHC) by infrared spectroscopy. The repellency index was used to quantify SWR of intact ([R.sub.intact]) and eluted ([R.sub.eluted]) samples. Amendment rate (0.2 > 0.1 > 0 [m.sup.3] [m.sup.-3]) and type (BSC > RSP = SPM > CC) significantly affected [R.sub.intact]. Only CC-amended rootzones were more wettable than the control. Severely elevated [R.sub.eluted] and MAHC were observed in all sands amended by BSC. Inclusion of SPM or RSP at 0.1 [m.sup.3] [m.sup.-3] resulted in [R.sub.eluted] and MAHC values statistically equivalent to the control rootzone. At 0.2 [m.sup.3] [m.sup.-3] inclusion, all organic amendments significantly increased [R.sub.eluted] and MAHC relative to the control (BSC > RSP = SPM).

Seed germination and vegetative growth studies were conducted to determine relative salinity tolerance of greens-type Poa annua L. compared with other cool-season turfgrass species. Effects of increasing salinity stress on final germination percentage (FGP), germination rate (GR), clipping yield dry weight (CYD), verdure dry weight (VD), root dry weight (RD), and the longest root length (LRL) were evaluated for nine experimental lines of greens-type P. annua, two cultivars of Kentucky bluegrass (P. pratensis L.), three cultivars of creeping bentgrass (Agrostis stolonifera L.), and one cultivar of perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.). Generally, FGP, GR, CYD, VD, and RD declined with increasing salinity; LRL increased at lower salinity levels but decreased at higher levels. Perennial ryegrass 'Charger II' and creeping bentgrass 'Mariner' exhibited the most salinity tolerance while Kentucky bluegrass cultivars exhibited the least. Salinity tolerance of greens-type P. annua was intermediate; however, some experimental lines exhibited nearly equal salinity tolerance to that of Mariner. Our data suggest greens-type P. annua possesses moderate to good salinity tolerance during seed germination and vegetative growth relative to other cool-season turfgrass species and has potential to be used on golf courses with moderate salt problems affecting turf establishment and maintenance.

Current literature suggests Poa annua L. (annual bluegrass) is intolerant to salinity stress. Response of greens-type Poa annua to chronic salinity stress (12 wk at 8.0 dS [m.sup.-1]) was evaluated over two greenhouse experiments. Vegetative samples of 33 greens-type P. annua experimental lines were maintained at a 6.4-mm mowing height and irrigated daily with modified Hoagland's solutions possessing salinity levels of 0.7 dS [m.sup.-1] (nonsaline control) or 8.0 dS [m.sup.-1] (NaCI treatment, approaching 0.25 strength sea water, approx. 13.5 dS [m.sup.-1]). Clipping yield dry weight (CYD) and leaf water content (LWC) were measured weekly. Digital images were collected at the end of weeks 1, 4, 8, and 12 to determine percentage cover (PC) and dark green color index (DGCI). Across all lines, all sample dates, and both experiments, salinity stress significantly reduced PC (30.8%), DGCI (9.3%), CYD (33.9%), and LWC (3.3%) compared with nonsaline controls ([alpha] = 0.05), suggesting chronic salinity stress is detrimental to greens-type P. annua quality. However, significant differences in relative PC and relative CYD were observed among lines, indicating that substantial variation in salinity tolerance exists in greens-type P. annua. Numerous greens-types P. annua experimental lines, such as PSU 99-9-21, PSU 01-1-46, and PSU 05-1-14, possess moderate-to-good salinity tolerance and are potentially suitable for use on golf courses with moderate salt problems.

Easy handling and low unit N cost make prilled urea (46-0-0) a popular fertilizer. While incomplete recovery of granular urea applications by turfgrass is documented, field evaluations of NH3 volatilization mitigation by coatings or bioinhibitor efficiency enhancements are limited. Meanwhile, NH3 emissions reduce air quality and contribute to nutrient loading of water resources. Our objectives were to quantify 3- and 6-d ammonia emission and 9-week turfgrass recovery of unincorporated granular fertilizer application to turfgrass. In 2014 and 2015, commercial urea-N fertilizers were broadcast over a mature Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L. 'Midnight') lawn at 43 kg ha-1. Treatments included conventional urea and three enhanced-efficiency fertilizers; a blended fertilizer with 25% of its urea-N supplanted by polymer- and polymer-/sulfur-coated prills, or two stabilized urea fertilizers both amended by N-(n-butyl) thiophosphoric triamide (NBPT) and dicyandiamide (DCD) inhibitors. Using a 51% 'trapping-efficiency' flux chamber system under the field conditions described, 23.1 or 33.5% of the conventional urea-N was lost as NH3 over the respective 3- or 6-d period following application. Alternatively, dual amendment by NBPT and DCD resulted in approximately 10.3 or 19.6% NH3-N loss over the respective 3- or 6-d periods, and greater fertilizer-N recovery by the turfgrass over the 9-week experiments. During a baseball game, the ball will strike the playing surface at a variety of speeds and angles. The speed at which the ball travels after impact with the playing surface has been referred to as the pace of the surface. Wide variations in pace can reduce the safety and playability of baseball field surfaces. Pace can be quantified by measuring the coefficient of restitution. The coefficient of restitution is defined as the ratio of two velocities; the velocity of a baseball after impact with the surface divided by the velocity of the ball prior to impact. An apparatus was developed to measure the coefficient of restitution of a baseball striking various playing surfaces. The apparatus, termed Pennbounce, uses infrared screens to measure the coefficient of restitution of baseballs propelled at varying angles and velocities. Pennbounce was used to measure the pace of traditional synthetic turf (Astroturf), infilled synthetic turf (Fieldturf), natural turfgrass, and skinned infield surfaces. Baseballs were propelled at the surfaces using two velocities and impact angles. Coal combustion by-products (CCB) are produced nationwide, generating 108 Mg of waste annually. Though varied, the majority of CCB are crystalline alumino-silicate minerals. Both disposal costs of CCB and interest in alternative horticultural/agricultural production systems have increased recently. Field studies assessed the benefit of CCB and organic waste/product mixtures as supplemental soil/growth media for production of hybrid bermudagrass [Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers. x C. transvaalensis Burtt-Davy] sod. Growth media were applied at depths of 2 to 4 cm (200 to 400 m³.ha-1) and vegetatively established by sprigging. Cultural practices typical of commercial methods were employed over 99- or 114-day growth periods. Sod was monitored during these propagation cycles, then harvested, evaluated, and installed offsite in a typical lawn-establishment method. Results showed mixtures of CCB and biosolids as growth media increased yield of biomass, with both media and tissue having greater nutrient content than the control media. Volumetric water content of CCB-containing media significantly exceeded that of control media and soil included with a purchased bermudagrass sod. Once installed, sod grown on CCB-media did not differ in rooting strength from control or purchased sod.
