3. Defect states in LiFeAs as seen by low temperature scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy

Abstract

We present a microscopic investigation of frequently observed impurity-induced states in stoichiometric LiFeAs using low temperature scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy (STM/STS). Our data reveal seven distinct well defined defects which are discernible in topographic measurements. Depending on their local topographic symmetry, we are able to assign five defect types to specific lattice sites at the Li, Fe and As positions. The most prominent result is that two different defect types have a remarkably different impact on the superconducting state. A specific and quite abundant Fe-defect with $D_2$-symmetry generates significant impurity-induced additional states primarily at positive bias voltage with pronounced peaks in the on-site local density of states (LDOS) at about 4~mV and 12~mV. On the other hand, a $D_4$-symmetric As-defect causes a significantly enhanced LDOS at both positive and negative bias voltages. We expect that these findings provide fresh input for further experimental and theoretical studies on elucidating the nature of superconductivity in LiFeAs.

4. Unusual temperature evolution of superconductivity in LiFeAs

Abstract

We have performed temperature dependent tunneling spectroscopy on an impurity-free surface area of a LiFeAs single crystal. Our data reveal a highly unusual temperature evolution of superconductivity: at $T_c^*=18$~K a partial superconducting gap opens, as is evidenced by subtle, yet clear features in the tunneling spectra, i.e. particle-hole symmetric coherence peaks, and a dip-hump structure which signals strong-coupling superconductivity. At $T_c=16$~K, these features substantiate dramatically and become characteristic of full superconductivity. Remarkably, this is accompanied by an almost jump-like increase of the gap energy at $T_c$ to about 87\% of its low-temperature gap value. The energy of the bosonic mode as measured by the distance between the coherence peak and the higher-energy dip remains practically constant in the whole temperature regime $T\leq T_c^*$. The comparison of these findings with established experimental and theoretical results lead us to suggest that the bosonic mode is not directly related to incommensurate spin fluctuations that have previously been observed in inelastic neutron scattering., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

We present microscopic investigations on the two-dimensional arrangement of cobalt phthalocyanine molecules on a graphite (HOPG) substrate in the low coverage regime. The initial growth and ordering of molecular layers is revealed in high resolution scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). On low coverages single molecules orient mostly along one of the substrate lattice directions, while they form chains at slightly higher coverage. Structures with two different unit cells can be found from the first monolayer on. A theoretical model based on potential energy calculations is presented, which relates the two phases to the driving ordering forces., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

A crucial step in revealing the nature of unconventional superconductivity is to investigate the symmetry of the superconducting order parameter. Scanning tunneling spectroscopy has proven a powerful technique to probe this symmetry by measuring the quasiparticle interference (QPI) which sensitively depends on the superconducting pairing mechanism. A particularly well suited material to apply this technique is the stoichiometric superconductor LiFeAs as it features clean, charge neutral cleaved surfaces without surface states and a relatively high Tc~18K. Our data reveal that in LiFeAs the quasiparticle scattering is governed by a van-Hove singularity at the center of the Brillouin zone which is in stark contrast with other pnictide superconductors where nesting is crucial for both scattering and s+- superconductivity. Indeed, within a minimal model and using the most elementary order parameters, calculations of the QPI suggest a dominating role of the hole-like bands for the quasiparticle scattering. Our theoretical findings do not support the elementary singlet pairing symmetries s++, s+-, and d-wave. This brings to mind that the superconducting pairing mechanism in LiFeAs is based on an unusual pairing symmetry such as an elementary p-wave (which provides optimal agreement between the experimental data and QPI simulations) or a more complex order parameter (e.g. s+id-wave symmetry).

Abstract

Resistance to soil-borne viruses as Soil-borne Wheat Mosaic Virus (SBWMV) has gained evident importance in wheat research and breeding. Very few varieties of bread and durum wheat are resistant to these viruses. Search for new sources of SBWMV is conducted worldwide and loci causing resistance have been described on the B and D genomes of tetraploid and hexaploid wheat. In the present study, a gene locus was identified on the A genome of Triticum monococcumand was successfully transferred to hexaploid wheat. In hexaploid wheat, it is expressed in a stable dominant manner. As this is the first SBWMV resistance gene located on the A genome, this locus is proposed as Sbm3.

Abstract

Three holes were drilled to the bed of Rutford Ice Stream, through ice up to 2154 m thick, to investigate the basal processes and conditions associated with fast ice flow and the glacial history of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet. A narrative of the drilling, measuring and sampling activities, as well as some preliminary results and initial interpretations of subglacial conditions, is given. These were the deepest subglacial access holes ever drilled using the hot-water drilling method. Samples of bed and englacial sediments were recovered, and a number of instruments were installed in the ice column and the bed. The ice–bed interface was found to be unfrozen, with an existing, well-developed subglacial hydrological system at high pressure, within ~1% of the ice overburden. The bed itself comprises soft, water-saturated sediments, consistent with previous geophysical interpretations. Englacial sediment quantity varies significantly between two locations ~2 km apart, and possibly over even shorter (~20 m) distances. Difficulties and unusual observations encountered while connecting to the subglacial hydrological system in one hole possibly resulted from the presence of a large clast embedded in the bottom of the ice.
