Aim: To evaluate the closure pattern and symmetry of the left and right neurocentral junctions (NCJs) in the normal growing spine, in relation to preexistent spinal rotation and to the convexity of the curve in idiopathic scoliosis. Methods: CT scans of the thorax and abdomen of 199 non-scoliotic children (0-16 years old), with indications other than spinal pathology, were systemically analyzed. An infantile (0-3 years old), juvenile (4-9), and adolescent (10-16) cohort was conducted according to the criteria of the Scoliosis Research Society. Asymmetrical closure of the NCJs from spinal levels T2 to L5, and vertebral rotation were analyzed, semi-automatically, using in-house developed software. Inter and intra-observer reliability was tested. Results: First, NCJs closed in the lumbar spine, then high thoraci&cgrave;, and last in the mid- and low thoracic spine. In the thoracic spine the right NCJs were significantly larger than the left NCJs in infantiles; whereas the left NCJs were larger than the right NCJs in juveniles. In the adolescent and lumbar spine most NCJs were already closed. Rotation of the high thoracic spine was to the left in all age cohorts. Preexistent rotation in the mid- and low-thoracic spine was to the left in the infantile cohort, to the right in the juvenile cohort, and even more to the right in the adolescent cohort. Conclusions: This study demonstrates the asymmetry and regional pattern of closure of the NCJs at different ages, matching the preexistent rotation of the growing and convexity of the curve in idiopathic scoliosis. Whether NCJ asymmetry is the cause or a cause of pre-existent rotation, can not be derived from this study. Significance: This study contributes to the knowledge of the anatomy of the normal spine and suggests that in the pathogenesis of idiopathic scoliosis, the spine follows a preexistent rotational pattern. Immigrants' identification with the receiving society is a core dimension of their integration process. Previous research has much focused on the relevance of language acquisition, job market placement, and intergroup friendship as drivers of identification. At the same time, neighborhoods as immediate living environments reflect a relevant experiential setting in which immigrants learn about the social fabric of the receiving society and to which degree (local) public authorities take their concerns into account. This study examines how perceptions of neighborhood social cohesion and disorder relate to immigrants' identification with the receiving society. Using geo-coded panel data from the Netherlands Longitudinal Lifecourse Study, we find robust empirical evidence that high levels of perceived neighborhood social cohesion predict higher degrees of immigrants' national identification mainly by facilitating intergroup interaction. Our results suggest that perceptions of and experiences in immigrants' immediate living environments are highly relevant for outcomes related to their integration within the receiving society., (Copyright © 2022 Elsevier Inc. Aim: To use computed tomography (CT) to assess the validity and reliability of the posterior landmarks, spinous processes (SP), transverse processes (TP), and centre of lamina (COL), as compared to the Cobb angle to assess the curve severity and progression of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS)., Materials and Methods: A consecutive series of CT examinations of severe AIS patients were included retrospectively. SP, TP, and COL angles were measured for all curves and compared to the Cobb angle., Results: One hundred and five patients were included. The mean Cobb versus SP, TP, and COL angles were, 54° versus 37°, 49°, and 51° in the thoracic curves and 34° versus 26°, 31°, and 34° in the (thoraco)lumbar curves. Intraclass correlation coefficient values for intra-rater measurements of the SP, TP, and COL angles were 0.93, 0.97, and 0.95 and 0.70, 0.90, and 0.88 for inter-rater measurements. The correlations between the Cobb angle and SP, TP, and COL angles in thoracic and (thoraco)lumbar curves were 0.79 and 0.66, 0.87 and 0.84, and 0.80 and 0.70., Conclusions: The posterior spinal landmarks can be used for assessment of scoliosis severity in AIS; however, they show a systematic underestimation, but a strong correlation with the coronal Cobb angle. Background: Decreased pelvic mobility and pelvic retroversion may result from spinal degeneration and lead to changes in the orientation of the acetabular implant after total hip arthroplasty (THA). While multiple patient and surgery-related factors contribute to THA dislocations, there is increasing evidence that sagittal spinopelvic dynamics are relevant for THA stability. The aim of this systematic review was to assess the relationship between previously described sagittal spinopelvic characteristics and implant dislocations after primary THA., Methods: A comprehensive literature search in the PubMed and Embase databases was conducted for studies reporting on spinopelvic morphology, alignment, pathology, or surgery and THA dislocations. Risk of bias was assessed using the MINORS criteria. Because of high heterogeneity in study methodology, a synthesis of best evidence was performed. Odds ratios (ORs), relative risks (RRs), and effect sizes (g) were calculated., Results: Fifteen studies (1,007,900 THAs) with quality scores of 15 to 23 out of 24 were included. Nine different spinopelvic alignment parameters (8 studies, g = 0.14 to 2.02), spinal pathology (2 studies, OR = 1.9 to 29.2), and previous spinal fusion surgery (8 studies, OR = 1.59 to 23.7, RR = 3.0) were found to be related to THA dislocation. Conflicting results were found for another sagittal pelvic morphology parameter, pelvic incidence., Conclusions: Several sagittal spinopelvic patient characteristics were found to be related to THA dislocation, and the associated risks were greater than for other patient and surgery-related factors. Future research is needed to determine which of those characteristics and parameters should be taken into account in patients undergoing primary THA., Level of Evidence: Prognostic Level III. Social obligation begins far before people establish explicit cooperative relationships. Research on trust suggests that people feel obligated to trust other people even at zero acquaintance, thus trusting complete strangers even though they privately expect to be exploited. Such obligations promote mutually beneficial behavior among strangers and likely help people build goodwill needed for more long-lasting relationships.

Background: Though computed tomography (CT) and 3 dimensional (3D) reconstruction of the spine and ribcage are powerful techniques for detailed monitoring of spinal growth and surgical planning of patients, drawbacks can arise. We explored the application of low-dose stereoradiography of the spine to calculate distinct morphologic parameters of the vertebral body in a juvenile patient population with early-onset scoliosis or congenital scoliosis. This study compares the 3D vertebral morphology measurements using low-dose stereoradiography with the currently accepted imaging modality for such measurements, CT scans., Methods: A total of 86 vertebrae of 6 patients with early-onset scoliosis and 3 patients with congenital scoliosis, age ranged between 7.8 and 12.5 years, who had both thoracic spine CT scan and low-dose stereoradiography of the spine were included. 3D reconstructions of CT and low-dose stereoradiography were generated. Using previously validated image processing techniques, vertebral anterior (A), posterior (P), left (L), and right (R) heights, superior and inferior endplates depth and width (S-D, I-D, S-W, I-W) were measured on the CTs' 3D reconstructions and were compared with the same parameters measured on low-dose stereoradiography reconstructions using a postprocessing custom code. The agreement between the 2 techniques in measurement of the vertebral morphology was assessed using the Bland-Altman plots., Results: No significant difference was observed in the A, P, L, R, S-W, and I-W between the stereoradiography and CT measurements (P>0.05). S-D and I-D were significantly greater in low-dose stereoradiography measurements P<0.05. Bland-Altman plots showed an agreement between the stereoradiography and CT techniques in vertebral height measurements (A, P, L, R); however, larger measurement bias and greater limits of agreement in S-D, I-D, S-W, and I-W measurements were shown., Conclusions: In vivo measurements of the vertebral heights using low-dose stereoradiography 3D reconstructions were comparable with CT measurements except for the superior and inferior vertebral depths. The low-dose stereoradiography imaging modality and the postprocessing platform can be used for assessment of the vertebral heights and monitoring asymmetric growth in patients undergoing growth-sparing treatment except for the vertebral levels with congenital deformities., Level of Evidence: Level IV.

Background: Acetabular cup orientation plays a key role in implant stability and the success of total hip arthroplasty. To date, the orientation has been measured with different imaging modalities and definitions, leading to lack of consensus on optimal cup placement. A 3-dimensional (3D) concept involving a trigonometric description enables unambiguous definitions. Our objective was to test the validity and reliability of a 3D trigonometric description of cup orientation., Methods: Computed tomographic scans of the pelvis, performed for vascular assessment of 20 patients with 22 primary total hip replacements in situ, were systematically collected. On multiplanar reconstructions, 3 observers independently measured cup orientation retrospectively in terms of coronal inclination, sagittal tilt, and transverse version. The angles measured in 2 planes were used to calculate the angle in the third plane via a trigonometric algorithm. For correlation and reliability analyses, intraobserver and interobserver differences between measured and calculated angles were evaluated with use of the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC)., Results: Measured and calculated angles had ICCs of 0.953 for coronal inclination, 0.985 for sagittal tilt, and 0.982 for transverse version. Intraobserver and interobserver reliability had ICCs of 0.987 and 0.987, respectively, for coronal inclination; 0.979 and 0.981, respectively, for sagittal tilt; and 0.992 and 0.978, respectively, for transverse version., Conclusions: The 3D concept with its trigonometric algorithm is a valid and reliable tool for the measurement of cup orientation., Clinical Relevance: By calculating the transverse version of cups from coronal inclination and sagittal tilt measurements, the trigonometric algorithm enables a 3D definition of cup orientation, regardless of the imaging modality used. In addition, it introduces sagittal tilt that, like pelvic tilt, rotates around the transverse axis.

Purpose: To investigate coronal plane trunk asymmetry (TA) and its association with sagittal postural alignment in healthy subjects before pubertal peak growth., Methods: In this cross-sectional baseline study, 1190 healthy pre-peak growth velocity subjects were included. Coronal plane TA was evaluated using back surface topography. Whole-body sagittal alignment (previously validated and objectively classified as neutral, sway-back or leaning-forward) and sagittal spinopelvic profile (trunk lean, lumbar lordosis, thoracic kyphosis, sacral inclination and length of the posteriorly inclined thoracolumbar segment) were determined, as were height, proportion of trunk to body length, body mass index, generalized joint laxity, and handedness., Results: Logistic regression analysis yielded overall sagittal posture class to be independently associated with coronal plane TA: having a leaning-forward posture associated with a nearly three times higher odds of coronal TA (p < 0.001) compared to neutrals. A sway-back was 2.2 times more likely to show TA (p = 0.016) than a neutral, yet only in boys. Significant associations with coronal TA were also found for trunk lean, thoracic kyphosis and body mass index. These correlations, however, were gender and posture class specific. The spinal region where asymmetry is seen, varies according to the whole-body sagittal alignment type: primary thoracic curves were the most frequent in leaning-forwards, whereas primary curves in the lumbar or declive thoracolumbar segment were the most common in sway-backs., Conclusions: In immature spines without known scoliosis, coronal plane TA is associated with whole-body sagittal alignment. It is more often seen in non-neutral than neutral sagittal posture types. Whether adolescent idiopathic scoliosis is related with postural characteristics before pubertal growth peak, should be addressed in future prospective studies.
