We have experimentally studied dissociative recombination (DR) of electronically and vibrationally relaxed ArH$^+$ in its lowest rotational levels, using an electron--ion merged-beams setup at the Cryogenic Storage Ring. We report measurements for the merged-beams rate coefficient of ArH$^+$ and compare it to published experimental and theoretical results. In addition, by measuring the kinetic energy released to the DR fragments, we have determined the internal state of the DR products after dissociation. At low collision energies, we find that the atomic products are in their respective ground states, which are only accessible via non-adiabatic couplings to neutral Rydberg states. Published theoretical results for ArH$^+$ have not included this DR pathway. We present new experimental and theoretical cross sections for electron-impact single ionization of Xe$^{12+}$ and Xe$^{13+}$ ions, and double ionization of Xe$^{12+}$, Xe$^{13+}$ and Xe$^{14+}$ ions for collision energies from the respective ionization thresholds up to 3500 eV. The calculations use the fully relativistic subconfiguration-averaged distorted-wave (SCADW) approach and, partly, the more detailed level-to-level distorted wave (LLDW) method. We find that, unlike in previous work, our theoretical cross sections agree with our experimental ones within the experimental uncertainties, except for the near-threshold double-ionization cross sections. We present a high-resolution spectral study of Fe L-shell extinction by the diffuse interstellar medium (ISM) in the direction of the X-ray binaries Cygnus X-1 and GX 339-4, using the XMM-Newton reflection grating spectrometer. The majority of interstellar Fe is suspected to condense into dust grains in the diffuse ISM, but the compounds formed from this process are unknown. Here, we use the laboratory cross sections from Kortright & Kim (2000) and Lee et al. (2009) to model the absorption and scattering profiles of metallic Fe, and the crystalline compounds fayalite (Fe$_2$SiO$_4$), ferrous sulfate (FeSO$_4$), hematite ($\alpha$-Fe$_2$O$_3$), and lepidocrocite ($\gamma$-FeOOH), which have oxidation states ranging from Fe$^{0}$ to Fe$^{3+}$. We find that the observed Fe L-shell features are systematically offset in energy from the laboratory measurements. An examination of over two dozen published measurements of Fe L-shell absorption finds a 1-2 eV scatter in energy positions of the L-shell features. Motivated by this, we fit for the best energy-scale shift simultaneously with the fine structure of the Fe L-shell extinction cross sections. Hematite and lepidocrocite provide the best fits ($\approx +1.1$ eV shift), followed by fayalite ($\approx +1.8$ eV shift). However, fayalite is disfavored, based on the implied abundances and knowledge of ISM silicates gained by infrared astronomical observations and meteoritic studies. We conclude that iron oxides in the Fe$^{3+}$ oxidation state are good candidates for Fe-bearing dust. To verify this, new absolute photoabsorption measurements are needed on an energy scale accurate to better than 0.2 eV., Comment: accepted to AAS Journals

To a conformal map $f$ from the disk $\mathbb{D}$ into the complex plane onto a domain with rectifiable Ahlfors-regular boundary, we associate a new kind of Grunsky operator on the Hardy space of the unit disk. This is analogous to the classical Grunsky operator, which itself can be viewed as an operator on Bergman or Dirichlet space. We show that the pull-back of the Smirnov space of the complement of $f(\mathbb{D})$ by $f$ is the graph of the Grunsky operator. We also characterize those domains with rectifiable Ahlfors-regular boundaries such that the Grunsky operator is Hilbert-Schmidt. In particular, we show that if the Grunsky operator is Hilbert-Schmidt, then $f(\mathbb{D})$ is a Weil-Petersson quasidisk. The formulations of the results and proofs make essential use of a geometric treatment of Smirnov space as a space of half-order differentials.

Observations of OH$^+$ are used to infer the interstellar cosmic ray ionization rate in diffuse atomic clouds, thereby constraining the propagation of cosmic rays through and the shielding by interstellar clouds, as well as the low energy cosmic ray spectrum. In regions where the H$_2$ to H number density ratio is low, dissociative recombination (DR) is the dominant destruction process for OH$^+$ and the DR rate coefficient is important for predicting the OH$^+$ abundance and inferring the cosmic ray ionization rate. We have experimentally studied DR of electronically and vibrationally relaxed OH$^+$ in its lowest rotational levels, using an electron--ion merged-beams setup at the Cryogenic Storage Ring. From these measurements, we have derived a kinetic temperature rate coefficient applicable to diffuse cloud chemical models, i.e., for OH$^+$ in its electronic, vibrational, and rotational ground level. At typical diffuse cloud temperatures, our kinetic temperature rate coefficient is a factor of $\sim 5$ times larger than the previous experimentally derived value and a factor of $\sim 33$ times larger than the value calculated by theory. Our combined experimental and modelling results point to a significant increase for the cosmic ray ionization rate inferred from observations of OH$^+$ and H$_2$O$^+$, corresponding to a geometric mean of $(6.6 \pm 1.0) \times 10^{-16}\,\mathrm{s}^{-1}$, which is more than a factor of two larger than the previously inferred values of the cosmic ray ionization rate in diffuse atomic clouds. Combined with observations of diffuse and dense molecular clouds, these findings indicate a greater degree of cosmic ray shielding in interstellar clouds than has been previously inferred., Comment: Main paper: PDFLaTeX with 10 pages, 4 figures. It is found that single-cycle THz electromagnetic fields efficiently excite a GHz spin resonance mode in ferrimagnetic Tm$_3$Fe$_5$O$_{12}$, despite the near absence of GHz spectral components in the exciting THz pulse. By analyzing how the efficiency of excitation depends on the orientation and strength of the THz electric field, we show that it can be explained in terms of the nonlinear THz inverse Cotton-Mouton effect. Here, the THz electric field gets effectively rectified and acts on the ferrimagnetic spins as a uni-polar effective magnetic field pulse. This interpretation is confirmed by a theoretical model based on the phenomenological analysis of the effective magnetic field, combined with the equations of motion derived from the effective Lagrangian for a ferrimagnet. Moreover, by using the outcome of two-dimensional THz spectroscopy, we conjecture a quantum-mechanical interpretation of the observed effect in terms of stimulated Raman scattering of THz photons by the crystal-field split f-f electronic transitions of Tm$^{3+}$., Comment: 15 pages, 9 figures

This paper is an introduction to polarizations in the symplectic and orthogonal settings. They arise in association to a triple of compatible structures on a real vector space, consisting of an inner product, a symplectic form, and a complex structure. A polarization is a decomposition of the complexified vector space into the eigenspaces of the complex structure; this information is equivalent to the specification of a compatible triple. When either a symplectic form or inner product is fixed, one obtains a Grassmannian of polarizations. We give an exposition of this circle of ideas, emphasizing the symmetry of the symplectic and orthogonal settings, and allowing the possibility that the underlying vector spaces are infinite-dimensional. This introduction would be useful for those interested in applications of polarizations to representation theory, loop groups, complex geometry, moduli spaces, quantization, and conformal field theory.

Consider a compact surface $\mathscr{R}$ with distinguished points $z_1,\ldots,z_n$ and conformal maps $f_k$ from the unit disk into non-overlapping quasidisks on $\mathscr{R}$ taking $0$ to $z_k$. Let $\Sigma$ be the Riemann surface obtained by removing the closures of the images of $f_k$ from $\mathscr{R}$. We define forms which are meromorphic on $\mathscr{R}$ with poles only at $z_1,\ldots,z_n$, which we call Faber-Tietz forms. These are analogous to Faber polynomials in the sphere. We show that any $L^2$ holomorphic one-form on $\Sigma$ is uniquely expressible as a series of Faber-Tietz forms. This series converges both in $L^2(\Sigma)$ and uniformly on compact subsets of $\Sigma$.

Carbon $1s$ core-hole excitation of the molecular anion C$_2^-$ has been experimentally studied at high resolution by employing the photon-ion merged-beams technique at a synchrotron light source. The experimental cross section for photo--double-detachment shows a pronounced vibrational structure associated with $1\sigma_u\to3\sigma_g$ and $1\sigma_g \to 1\pi_u$ core excitations of the C$_2^-$ ground level and first excited level, respectively. A detailed Franck-Condon analysis reveals a strong contraction of the C$_2^-$ molecular anion by 0.2~\AA\ upon this core photoexcitation. The associated change of the molecule's moment of inertia leads to a noticeable rotational broadening of the observed vibrational spectral features. This broadening is accounted for in the present analysis which provides the spectroscopic parameters of the C$_2^-$ $1\sigma_u^{-1}\,3\sigma_g^2\;{^2}\Sigma_u^+$ and $1\sigma_g^{-1}\,3\sigma_g^2\;{^2}\Sigma_g^+$ core-excited levels., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures, 1 table, accepted for publication in ChemPhysChem

Over the past two decades the theory of the Weil-Petersson metric has been extended to general Teichm\"uller spaces of infinite type, including for example the universal Teichm\"uller space. In this paper we give a survey of the main results in the Weil-Petersson geometry of infinite-dimensional Teichm\"uller spaces. This includes the rigorous definition of complex Hilbert manifold structures, K\"ahler geometry and global analysis, and generalizations of the period mapping. We also discuss the motivations of the theory in representation theory and physics beginning in the 1980s. Some examples of the appearance of Weil-Petersson Teichm\"uller space in other fields such as fluid mechanics and two-dimensional conformal field theory are also provided.

Antiferromagnetic (AFM) materials possess a well-recognized potential for ultrafast data processing thanks to their intrinsic ultrafast spin dynamics, absence of stray fields, and large spin transport effects. The very same properties, however, make their manipulation difficult, requiring frequencies in THz range and magnetic fields of tens of Teslas. Switching of AFM order implies going into the nonlinear regime, a largely unexplored territory. Here we use THz light from a free electron laser to drive antiferromagnetic NiO into a highly nonlinear regime and steer it out of nonlinearity with magnetic field from a 33-Tesla Bitter magnet. This demonstration of large-amplitude dynamics represents a crucial step towards ultrafast resonant switching of AFM order.

Spin waves are proposed as information carriers for next-generation computing devices because of their low power consumption. Moreover, their wave-like nature allows for novel computing paradigms. Conventional methods to detect spin waves are based either on electrical induction, limiting the downscaling and efficiency complicating eventual implementation, or on light scattering, where the minimum detectable spin-wave wavelength is set by the wavelength of the laser. In this Article we demonstrate magneto-optical detection of spin waves beyond the diffraction limit using a metallic grating that selectively absorbs laser light. Specifically, we demonstrate the detection of propagating spin waves with a wavelength of 700 nm using a diffraction-limited laser spot with a size of 10 $\mu$m in 20 nm thick Py strips. Additionally, we show that this grating is selective to the wavelength of the spin wave, providing wavevector-selective spin-wave detection. This should open up new avenues towards the integration of the burgeoning fields of photonics and magnonics, and aid in the optical detection of spin waves in the short-wavelength exchange regime for fundamental research., Comment: Includes supplementary

Observations of CH$^+$ are used to trace the physical properties of diffuse clouds, but this requires an accurate understanding of the underlying CH$^+$ chemistry. Until this work, the most uncertain reaction in that chemistry was dissociative recombination (DR) of CH$^+$. Using an electron-ion merged-beams experiment at the Cryogenic Storage Ring, we have determined the DR rate coefficient of the CH$^+$ electronic, vibrational, and rotational ground state applicable for different diffuse cloud conditions. Our results reduce the previously unrecognized order-of-magnitude uncertainty in the CH$^+$ DR rate coefficient to $\sim \pm 20\%$ and are applicable at all temperatures relevant to diffuse clouds, ranging from quiescent gas to gas locally heated by processes such as shocks and turbulence. Based on a simple chemical network, we find that DR can be an important destruction mechanism at temperatures relevant to quiescent gas. As the temperature increases locally, DR can continue to be important up to temperatures of $ \sim 600\,\mathrm{K} $ if there is also a corresponding increase in the electron fraction of the gas. Experimental cross sections for m-fold photodetachment (m=2-5) of oxygen anions via K-shell excitation and ionization were measured in the photon-energy range of 525-1500 eV using the photon-ion merged-beams technique at a synchrotron light source. The measured cross sections exhibit clear signatures of direct double detachment, including double K-hole creation. The shapes of the double-detachment cross sections as a function of photon energy are in accord with Pattard's [J. Phys. B 35, L207 (2002)] empirical scaling law. We have also followed the complex deexcitation cascades that evolve subsequently to the initial double-detachment events by systematic large-scale cascade calculations.
