Abstract

Closure of the Central American Seaway (CAS) and hydrology of the Caribbean Sea triggered Northern Hemisphere Glaciation and played an important role in the Pliocene to modern‐day climate re‐establishing the deep and surface ocean currents. New data on Mn/Ca obtained with femtosecond laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry on well‐preserved tests of the epibenthic foraminifer Cibicidoides wuellerstorfi and infaunal C. mundulus contribute to the interpretation of paleoenvironmental conditions of the Caribbean Sea between 5.2 and 2.2 Ma (million years) across the closure of the CAS. Hydrothermal activity at the Lesser Antilles may be a primary source of Mn in the well‐oxygenated Plio‐Pleistocene Caribbean Sea. Incorporation of Mn in the benthic foraminifer shell carbonate is assumed to be affected by surface ocean nutrient cycling, and may hence be an indicator of paleoproductivity., Plain Language Summary: The closure of the Panama Isthmus caused the expansion of ice sheets in the Northern Hemisphere and changed the water current dynamics and climate in the Caribbean Sea since the Pliocene (∼5.3 million years ago). New Mn/Ca data measured using femtosecond laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry on the deep‐sea benthic foraminifer species Cibicidoides wuellerstorfi and Cibicidoides mundulus help us understand past environmental conditions of the Caribbean Sea prevailed between 5.2 and 2.2 million years ago. While manganese might be sourced from the surrounding hydrothermal vents, its incorporation in the foraminifer shell carbonate might be related to nutrient cycling and may indicate past biological productivity in the ocean., Key Points: Femtosecond‐laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry provides a new approach on distinguishing Mn of the ontogenetic shell calcite from Mn of the authigenic coatings. Abstract

Planktonic Foraminifera are ubiquitous marine protozoa inhabiting the upper ocean. During life, they secrete calcareous shells, which accumulate in marine sediments, providing a geological record of past spatial and temporal changes in their community structure. As a result, they provide the opportunity to analyze both current and historical patterns of species distribution and community turnover in this plankton group on a global scale. The FORCIS project aims to unlock this potential by synthesizing a comprehensive global database of abundance and diversity observations of living planktonic Foraminifera in the upper ocean over more than 100 years starting from 1910. The database will allow for unravelling the impact of multiple global-change stressors acting on planktonic Foraminifera in historical times, using an approach that combines statistical analysis of temporal diversity changes in response to environmental changes with numerical modeling of species response based on their ecological traits.

Abstract

Calcareous foraminifer shells (tests) represent one of the most important archives for paleoenvironmental and paleoclimatic reconstruction. To develop a mechanistic understanding of the relationship between environmental parameters and proxy signals, knowledge of the fundamental processes operating during foraminiferal biomineralization is essential. Here, we apply microscopic and diffraction‐based methods to address the crystallographic and hierarchical structure of the test wall of different hyaline foraminifer species. Our results show that the tests are constructed from micrometer‐scale oriented mesocrystals built of nanometer‐scale entities. Based on these observations, we propose a mechanistic extension to the biomineralization model for hyaline foraminifers, centered on the formation and assembly of units of metastable carbonate phases to the final mesocrystal via a non‐classical particle attachment process, possibly facilitated by organic matter. This implies the presence of metastable precursors such as vaterite or amorphous calcium carbonate, along with phase transitions to calcite, which is relevant for the mechanistic understanding of proxy incorporation in the hyaline foraminifers., Plain Language Summary: Foraminifers are single celled marine organisms typically half a millimeter in size, which form shells made of calcium carbonate. During their life, the chemical composition of their shells records environmental conditions. By analyzing fossil shells, past conditions can be reconstructed to understand ancient oceans and climate change. To do that correctly, we need to know exactly how foraminifers form their shell. We find that foraminifers build micrometer‐sized mesocrystals which are made of smaller building blocks. This means that the smallest building blocks form first and assemble to form a larger grain, which is oriented in a specific direction. To align all the building blocks, it is possible that they are first unstable and undergo transformation on assembly, during which their composition may change. By understanding and quantifying this process, the composition of the final fossil shell may be understood, ultimately leading to more reliable reconstructions of past environmental change., Key Points: Hyaline foraminiferal shells are built of micrometer sized mesocrystalline units. 20. New constraints on the Eastern Mediterranean δ18O:δD relationship

Abstract

Previous work on oxygen and hydrogen isotope data from Eastern Mediterranean water samples has defined a mixing relationship in this region that is different from the world surface ocean. This prompted speculations about the hydrological processes in the Mediterranean region. We present new δ18O and δD data from the Eastern Mediterranean region and the East Greenland Current system, spanning a wide salinity range. These data define δ18O:δD relationships for both regions that are consistent with the world surface ocean δ18O:δD relationship, despite the highly evaporative conditions that prevail in the Mediterranean region. These new geochemical data have suggested that the world surface ocean &delta18O:δD relationship holds throughout almost the entire global salinity range.

Abstract

The overarching goal of MSM58 was to gain knowledge about the natural variability of the Subtropical Gyre (STG) and Azores Front (AF) system as well as of changes in the deepwater composition and geometry in the eastern and western North Atlantic Basins, particularly during warm periods and during times of significant warming and ice sheet melting as during the last 25,000 years. For this purpose a sediment and water column sampling program was carried out along the Mid Atlantic Ridge (MAR) from 32�� to 41��N and in four E-W depth transects on the MAR flanks. Prior to sediment sampling with multi corer/box corer and gravity corer, small interridge basins were hydroacoustically mapped using the onboard multibeam swath bathymetry and sediment echosounder systems to identify proper locations for coring sequences of Last Glacial to Holocene sediments with high sedimentation rates. After hydroacoustic surveys, sediment sampling was carried out in 6 working areas at 30 stations between 1300 and 4100m water depth. In total 205 m of sediment were gathered. Water column sampling for plankton and seawater took place at 16 stations. Preliminary sediment inspection indicates that the cores contain the Holocene and up to three glacial-interglacial cycles. As expected, sedimentation rates decrease from North to South and from East to West following the decline in nutrient supply from the subpolar to subtropical North Atlantic. Abstract

We present a summary of biomass data for 11 Plankton Functional Types (PFTs) plus phytoplankton pigment data, compiled as part of the MARine Ecosystem biomass DATa (MAREDAT) initiative. The goal of the MAREDAT initiative is to provide global gridded data products with coverage of all biological components of the global ocean ecosystem. This special issue is the first step towards achieving this. The PFTs presented here include picophytoplankton, diazotrophs, coccolithophores, Phaeocystis, diatoms, picoheterotrophs, microzooplankton, foraminifers, mesozooplankton, pteropods and macrozooplankton. All variables have been gridded onto a World Ocean Atlas (WOA) grid (1° × 1° × 33 vertical levels × monthly climatologies). The data show that (1) the global total heterotrophic biomass (2.0–6.4 Pg C) is at least as high as the total autotrophic biomass (0.5–2.6 Pg C excluding nanophytoplankton and autotrophic dinoflagellates), (2) the biomass of zooplankton calcifiers (0.9–2.3 Pg C) is substantially higher than that of coccolithophores (0.01–0.14 Pg C), (3) patchiness of biomass distribution increases with organism size, and (4) although zooplankton biomass measurements below 200 m are rare, the limited measurements available suggest that Bacteria and Archaea are not the only heterotrophs in the deep sea. More data will be needed to characterize ocean ecosystem functioning and associated biogeochemistry in the Southern Hemisphere and below 200 m. Microzooplankton database: doi:10.1594/PANGAEA.779970.

Abstract

Specimens of the benthic foraminifer Ammonia beccarii were cultured in the laboratory in order to determine the relation between temperature and Mg/Ca and oxygen isotope values in their tests. Asexual reproduction in this species provides a large number of juveniles that were allowed to grow into maturity at temperatures ranging from 10 to 27 °C and at salinities ranging from 18 to 33 PSU. The Mg/Ca in a calcite increase exponentially and δ18O decreases linearly with the temperature. Salinity has no significant impact on either Mg/Ca or δ18O. We show how the combination of these two parameters can be used to reconstruct seawater δ18O and temperature in shallow marine habitats.

Abstract

Phytoplankton identification and abundance data are now commonly feeding plankton distribution databases worldwide. This study is a first attempt to compile the largest possible body of data available from different databases as well as from individual published or unpublished datasets regarding diatom distribution in the world ocean. The data obtained originate from time series studies as well as spatial studies. This effort is supported by the Marine Ecosystem Model Inter-Comparison Project (MAREMIP), which aims at building consistent datasets for the main plankton functional types (PFTs) in order to help validate biogeochemical ocean models by using carbon (C) biomass derived from abundance data. In this study we collected over 293 000 individual geo-referenced data points with diatom abundances from bottle and net sampling. Sampling site distribution was not homogeneous, with 58% of data in the Atlantic, 20% in the Arctic, 12% in the Pacific, 8% in the Indian and 1% in the Southern Ocean. A total of 136 different genera and 607 different species were identified after spell checking and name correction. Only a small fraction of these data were also documented for biovolumes and an even smaller fraction was converted to C biomass. As it is virtually impossible to reconstruct everyone's method for biovolume calculation, which is usually not indicated in the datasets, we decided to undertake the effort to document, for every distinct species, the minimum and maximum cell dimensions, and to convert all the available abundance data into biovolumes and C biomass using a single standardized method. Statistical correction of the database was also adopted to exclude potential outliers and suspicious data points. The final database contains 90 648 data points with converted C biomass. Abstract

The ecological role of foraminifers has been largely unknown partly owing to difficulties in determining their individual biomass, although foraminifers are abundant in surface marine sediments. The present study provides a reliable and inexpensive method for the quantification of the protein content of hard-shelled foraminifers as a measure of biomass while preserving the tests for later analyses (e.g. morphometry, stable isotopes), using nano-spectrophotometry. The protein biomass, is significantly correlated with size, and shell weight of Ammonia tepida (n = 102, p < 0.00001, R-2 = 0.462, and n = 181, p < 0.00001, R-2 = 0.855). Variability in the relation between test size and weight, and cell biomass may result from natural variability in horizontal and vertical microenvironments encompassing metabolic state, as well as variability in test morphometry and calcite mass (i.e. test weight). In turn, knowing the size- and species-specific biomass of foraminifers adds valuable information on the trophic and ecologic conditions of modern and ancient marine environments, in particular on the reconstruction of the regional palaeoproductivity and flux of organic matter.

Abstract

The Messinian Salinity Crisis in the Mediterranean, 5.96–5.33 Million years ago (Ma), represents the most recent case of massive evaporite deposition throughout an ocean basin. Here we quantitatively investigate the nature of the gypsum–marl cycles within its first phase, known as Lower Evaporites (LE) or Primary Lower Gypsum (PLG) (5.96–5.59 Ma). We conclude that to precondition the basin for deposition of the LE/PLG sequence, its connection with the open Atlantic must have been reduced to about 3% of the cross-sectional area of the modern Strait of Gibraltar. Using the modern strait morphology for scale, this would imply a connection with a depth of about 50 m and a width of several kilometres. We find that the LE/PLG evaporite–marl cycles may then have resulted from sea-level fluctuations of the order of 5 to 10 m and/or fluctuations in the Mediterranean's hydrological deficit of the order of 20%. Previous work has argued that sea-level control may be excluded, because there are too many cycles to agree with orbital obliquity-related timing. However, we argue from analogy with Quaternary sea- level records that sub-orbital sea-level fluctuations may easily reach the required magnitudes, so that sea-level control remains plausible.
