Reinforcement Learning from Human Feedback (RLHF) has become a popular approach to align language models (LMs) with human preferences. This method involves collecting a large dataset of human pairwise preferences across various text generations and using it to infer (implicitly or explicitly) a reward model. Numerous methods have been proposed to learn the reward model and align a LM with it. However, the costly process of collecting human preferences has received little attention and could benefit from theoretical insights. This paper addresses this issue and aims to formalize the reward training model in RLHF. We frame the selection of an effective dataset as a simple regret minimization task, using a linear contextual dueling bandit method. Given the potentially large number of arms, this approach is more coherent than the best-arm identification setting. We then propose an offline framework for solving this problem. Under appropriate assumptions - linearity of the reward model in the embedding space, and boundedness of the reward parameter - we derive bounds on the simple regret. Finally, we provide a lower bound that matches our upper bound up to constant and logarithmic terms. To our knowledge, this is the first theoretical contribution in this area to provide an offline approach as well as worst-case guarantees.

Passive and effective fluid capture and transport at small scale is crucial for industrial and medical applications, especially for the realisation of point-of-care tests. Performing these tests involves several steps including biological fluid capture, aliquoting, reaction with reagents at the fluid-device interface, and reading of the results. Ideally, these tests must be fast and offer a large surface-to-volume ratio to achieve rapid and precise diagnostics with a reduced amount of fluid. Such constraints are often contradictory as a high surface-to-volume ratio implies a high hydraulic resistance and hence a decrease in the flow rate. Inspired by the feeding mechanism of hummingbirds, we propose a frugal fluid capture device that takes advantage of elastocapillary deformations to enable concomitant fast liquid transport, aliquoting, and high confinement in the deformed state. The hierarchical design of the device - that consists in vertical grooves stacked on an elastic sheet - enables a two-step sequential fluid capture. Each unit groove mimics the hummingbird's tongue and closes due to capillary forces when a wetting liquid penetrates, yielding the closure of the whole device in a tubular shape, where additional liquid is captured. Combining elasticity, capillarity, and viscous flow, we rationalise the fluid-structure interaction at play both when liquid is scarce - end dipping and capillary rise - and abundant - full dipping. By functionalising the surface of the grooves such a passive device can concomitantly achieve all the steps of point-of-care tests, opening the way for the design of optimal devices for fluid capture and transport in microfluidics.

The stability of liquid film flows are important in many industrial applications. In the dip-coating process, a liquid film is formed over a substrate extracted at a constant speed from a liquid bath. We studied the linear stability of this film considering different thicknesses $\hat{h}$ for four liquids, spanning a large range of Kapitza numbers ($\rm Ka$). By solving the Orr-Sommerfeld eigenvalue problem with the Chebyshev-Tau spectral method, we calculated the neutral curves, investigated the instability mechanism and computed the absolute/convective threshold. The instability mechanism was studied through the analysis of vorticity distribution and the kinetic energy balance of the perturbations. It was found that liquids with low $\rm Ka$ (e.g. corn oil, $\text{Ka}$ = 4) have a smaller area of stability than a liquid at high $\rm Ka$ (e.g. Liquid Zinc, $\rm Ka$ = 11525). Surface tension has both a stabilizing and a destabilizing effect, especially for large $\rm Ka$. For long waves, it curves the vorticity lines near the substrate, reducing the flow under the crests. For short waves, it fosters vorticity production at the interface and creates a region of intense vorticity near the substrate. In addition, we discovered that the surface tension contributes to both the production and dissipation of perturbation's energy depending on the $\rm Ka$ number. In terms of absolute/convective threshold, we found a window of absolute instability in the $\text{Re}-\hat{h}$ space, showing that the Landau-Levich-Derjaguin solution ($\hat{h}=0.945 \text{Re}^{1/9}\text{Ka}^{-1/6}$) is always convectively unstable. Moreover, we show that for $\text{Ka}<17$, the Derjaguin's solution ($\hat{h}=1$) is always convectively unstable.

Collaborative learning offers a promising avenue for leveraging decentralized data. However, collaboration in groups of strategic learners is not a given. In this work, we consider strategic agents who wish to train a model together but have sampling distributions of different quality. The collaboration is organized by a benevolent aggregator who gathers samples so as to maximize total welfare, but is unaware of data quality. This setting allows us to shed light on the deleterious effect of adverse selection in collaborative learning. More precisely, we demonstrate that when data quality indices are private, the coalition may undergo a phenomenon known as unravelling, wherein it shrinks up to the point that it becomes empty or solely comprised of the worst agent. We show how this issue can be addressed without making use of external transfers, by proposing a novel method inspired by probabilistic verification. This approach makes the grand coalition a Nash equilibrium with high probability despite information asymmetry, thereby breaking unravelling.

In economic theory, the concept of externality refers to any indirect effect resulting from an interaction between players that affects the social welfare. Most of the models within which externality has been studied assume that agents have perfect knowledge of their environment and preferences. This is a major hindrance to the practical implementation of many proposed solutions. To address this issue, we consider a two-player bandit setting where the actions of one of the players affect the other player and we extend the Coase theorem [Coase, 1960]. This result shows that the optimal approach for maximizing the social welfare in the presence of externality is to establish property rights, i.e., enable transfers and bargaining between the players. Our work removes the classical assumption that bargainers possess perfect knowledge of the underlying game. We first demonstrate that in the absence of property rights, the social welfare breaks down. We then design a policy for the players which allows them to learn a bargaining strategy which maximizes the total welfare, recovering the Coase theorem under uncertainty.

This report summarizes the work of the EMMI Rapid Reaction Task Force on "Real and Virtual Photon Production at Ultra-Low Transverse Momentum and Low Mass at the LHC". We provide an overview of the soft-photon puzzle, i.e., of the long-standing discrepancy between experimental data and predictions based on Low's soft-photon theorem, also referred to as "anomalous" soft photon production, and we review the current theoretical understanding of soft radiation and soft theorems. We also focus on low-mass dileptons as a tool for determining the electrical conductivity of the medium produced in high-energy nucleus-nucleus collisions. We discuss how both topics can be addressed with the planned ALICE 3 detector at the LHC., Comment: 63 pages, 20 figures

Physics - Fluid Dynamics - Abstract
Experimental investigations of the exit dynamics of a horizontal cylindrical object were performed in water and silicone oil (50 cSt). The fully immersed cylinder was initially at rest in a still fluid tank before being pushed (or pulled according to the measurement procedure) upwards at a constant velocity. Firstly, we demonstrate that these conditions are better satisfied for a large aspect ratio cylinder equipped with vertical side plates. Secondly, the influence of the initial depth on the liquid entrained and the wake generated by the cylinder is discussed. The deformation of the bath is found to be independent of the starting depth when the starting depth is larger than 6 times the cylinder diameter. In the present case, this criterion reflects also the finite acceleration of the cylinder to reach the determined constant exit velocity. Measurements in a range of exit speeds between 0.1 and 1 m/s indicate that the thickness of the liquid above the cylinder, when the cylinder starts crossing the interface, increases with the speed according to a logarithmic law of the Froude number. During the subsequent drainage, the evolution of the coated liquid thickness is found to first decrease exponentially with time just after the crossing of the interface. At later times, a change of regime occurs and the drainage follows the inverse of the square root of time irrespective of the crossing speed. Finally, the force necessary to maintain a constant exit speed during the motion of the cylinder inside and outside the bath is analyzed. This global measurement of the entrained liquid confirms the square root scaling of the thinning with time during the drainage process., Comment: 15 pages, 9 figures

Electromagnetic wiping systems allow to pre-meter the coating thickness of the liquid metal on a moving substrate. These systems have the potential to provide a more uniform coating and significantly higher production rates compared to pneumatic wiping, but they require substantially larger amounts of energy. This work presents a multi-objective optimization accounting for (1) maximal wiping efficiency (2) maximal smoothness of the wiping meniscus, and (3) minimal Joule heating. We present the Pareto front, identifying the best wiping conditions given a set of weights for the three competing objectives. The optimization was based on a 1D steady-state integral model, whose prediction scales according to the Hartmann number (Ha). The optimization uses a multi-gradient approach, with gradients computed with a combination of finite differences and variational methods. The results show that the wiping efficiency depends solely on Ha and not the magnetic field distribution. Moreover, we show that the liquid thickness becomes insensitive to the intensity of the magnetic field above a certain threshold and that the current distribution (hence the Joule heating) is mildly affected by the magnetic field's intensity and shape.

We investigate a real 3D stationary flow characterized by chaotic advection generated by a magnetic field created by permanent magnets acting on a weakly conductive fluid subjected to a weak constant current. The model under consideration involves the Stokes equations for viscous incompressible fluid at low Reynolds number in which the density forces correspond to the Lorentz force generated by the magnetic field of the magnets and the electric current through the fluid. An innovative numerical approach based on a mixed finite element method has been developed and implemented for computing the flow velocity fields with the electromagnetic force. This ensures highly accurate numerical results, allowing a detailed analysis of the chaotic behavior of fluid trajectories through the computations of associated Poincar\'e sections and Lyapunov exponents. Subsequently, an examination of mixing efficiency is conducted, employing computations of contamination and homogeneity rates, as well as mixing time. The obtained results underscore the relevance of the modeling and computational tools employed, as well as the design of the magnetohydrodynamic device used., Comment: Pre-submission version (preprint). We investigated photon-helicity-induced magnetization precession in Co$_{1-x}$Pt$_{x}$ alloy thin films. In addition to field-like torque, attributable to magnetic field generation owing to {\it the inverse Faraday effect}, we observed non-trivial and large damping-like torque which has never been discussed for single ferromagnetic layer. The composition dependence of those two torques is effectively elucidated by a model that considers mutual coupling via spin-orbit interaction between magnetization and the electronic orbital angular momentum generated by photon-helicity. This work significantly enhances our understanding of the physics relevant to the interplay of photon-helicity and magnetization in magnetic metals., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

This work considers a repeated principal-agent bandit game, where the principal can only interact with her environment through the agent. The principal and the agent have misaligned objectives and the choice of action is only left to the agent. However, the principal can influence the agent's decisions by offering incentives which add up to his rewards. The principal aims to iteratively learn an incentive policy to maximize her own total utility. This framework extends usual bandit problems and is motivated by several practical applications, such as healthcare or ecological taxation, where traditionally used mechanism design theories often overlook the learning aspect of the problem. We present nearly optimal (with respect to a horizon $T$) learning algorithms for the principal's regret in both multi-armed and linear contextual settings. Finally, we support our theoretical guarantees through numerical experiments.

The drag-out problem for small Reynolds numbers ($\rm Re$) admits the Landau-Levich-Derjaguin (LLD) solution for small capillary numbers ($\rm Ca$), and Derjaguin's solution for large $\rm Ca$. We investigate whether these solutions are absolutely or convectively unstable, solving the Orr-Sommerfeld eigenvalue problem. For Derjaguin's solution, we show that the LLD solution is convectively unstable for $\text{Ka}<17$ and absolutely unstable for $\text{Ka} \gtrsim 0.15 \,\text{Re}^{1.7}$ for $\text{Re} > 10$. For water ($\text{Ka}=3400$), the LLD solution is always convectively unstable. The absolute instability is observed only when the dip-coated film is additionally fed from above.

A large-volume Time Projection Chamber (TPC) is the main tracking and particle identification (PID) detector of the ALICE experiment at the CERN LHC. PID in the TPC is performed via specific energy-loss measurements (dE/dx), which are derived from the average pulse-height distribution of ionization generated by charged-particle tracks traversing the TPC volume. During Runs 1 and 2, until 2018, the gas amplification stage was based on multiwire proportional chambers (MWPC). Signals from the MWPC show characteristic long negative tails after an initial positive peak due to the long ion drift times in the MWPC amplification region. This so-called ion tail can lead to a significant amplitude loss in subsequently measured signals, especially in the high-multiplicity environment of high-energy Pb-Pb collisions, which results in a degradation of the dE/dx resolution. A detailed study of the signal shapes measured with the ALICE TPC with the Ne-CO2 (90-10) and Ar-CO2 (90-10) gas mixtures is presented, and the results are compared with three-dimensional Garfield simulations. The impact of the ion tail on the PID performance is studied employing the ALICE simulation framework and the feasibility of an offline correction procedure to account for the ion tail is demonstrated., Comment: 15 pages, 16 figures

Objective. This paper describes how the administrative leadership of 1 physical therapy department curated, implemented, and evaluated a culturally responsive administrative support strategy to foster a positive working environment. Participants' perceptions of culturally responsive practices were explored using climate survey data. Methods. This case occurred in the physical therapy and rehabilitation science department at an academic medical center in the United States. The department administers 5 educational programs, 3 faculty practices, a community clinic, and a robust research enterprise and employs over 100 employees. After a historic sociocultural event, administrators implemented a series of actions to understand the needs of department employees and to respond in a culturally responsive manner. Interventions included supportive activities, educational opportunities, and community-building events. The department administered an annual climate survey to assess the employees' perceptions of the working climate, perceived impacts of the culturally responsive interventions, and suggestions for improving department climate. Survey analysis included frequency statistics and thematic content analysis with sensitizing concepts from a culturally responsive practice framework previously applied in primary and secondary school settings. Results. A total of 131 employees participated in the annual climate survey from 2020 to 2022. Employees' confidence to identify and address microaggressions in working environments showed trends of overall improvement, and overall self-reported experiences with racial discrimination decreased. Participants reported positive trends in addressing discrimination among colleagues but also reported addressing offensive behaviors perpetrated by patients. Conclusion. Findings suggest that culturally responsive interventions are associated with positive trends in employee climate. Interventions tailored to the audience and curated to deepen cultural knowledge, enhance self-awareness, and validate others fostered a shared commitment to cultural equity. Impact. Administrative leaders have a role in fostering an inclusive climate by capitalizing on culturally significant teachable moments with sound culturally responsive strategy, bidirectional culturally sensitive communication, individual development, and collective action. For epitaxial Sr$_3$Ru$_2$O$_7$ films grown by pulsed laser deposition, we report a combined structural and magnetotransport study of thin films and Hall bar devices patterned side-by-side on the same film. Structural properties of these films are investigated using X-ray diffraction and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, and confirm that these films are epitaxially oriented and nearly phase pure. For magnetic fields applied along the $c-$axis, a positive magnetoresistance of 10\% is measured for unpatterned Sr$_3$Ru$_2$O$_7$ films, whereas for patterned Hall bar devices of channel widths of $10$ and $5\, \mu$m, magnetoresistance values of 40\% and 140\% are found, respectively. These films show switching behaviors from positive to negative magnetoresistance that are controlled by the direction of the applied magnetic field. The present results provide a promising route for achieving stable epitaxial synthesis of intermediate members of correlated layered strontium ruthenates, and for the exploration of device physics in thin films of these compounds., Comment: 9 pages and 6 Figures in the Main text. 3 pages and 4 Figures in the Supplementary Material

Condensed Matter - Materials Science - Abstract
We study the ultrafast magnetization dynamics of bcc Fe and fcc Co using the recently suggested heat-conserving three-temperature model (HC3TM), together with atomistic spin- and lattice dynamics simulations. It is shown that this type of Langevin-based simulation is able to reproduce observed trends of the ultrafast magnetization dynamics of fcc Co and bcc Fe, in agreement with previous findings for fcc Ni. The simulations are performed by using parameters that to as large extent as possible are obtained from electronic structure theory. The one parameter that was not calculated in this way, was the damping term used for the lattice dynamics simulations, and here a range of parameters were investigated. It is found that this term has a large influence on the details of the magnetization dynamics. The dynamics of iron and cobalt is compared with previous results for nickel and similarities and differences in the materials' behavior are analysed following the absorption of a femtosecond laser pulse. Importantly, for all elements investigated so far with this model, we obtain a linear relationship between the value of the maximally demagnetized state and the fluence of the laser pulse, which is in agreement with experiments., Comment: 9 pages, 9 figures, Submitted to Physical Review B

The Domain Name System (DNS) service is one of the pillars of the Internet. This service allows users to access websites on the Internet through easy-to-remember domain names rather than complex numeric IP addresses. DNS acts as a directory that translates the domain names into a corresponding IP address, allowing communication between computers on different networks. However, the concentration of DNS service providers on the Internet affects user security, privacy, and network accessibility. The reliance on a small number of large DNS providers can lead to (a) risks of data breaches and disruption of service in the event of failures and (b) concerns about the digital sovereignty of countries regarding DNS hosting. In this sense, this work approaches this issue of DNS concentration on the Internet by presenting a solution to measure DNS hosting centralization and digital sovereignty in countries. With the data obtained through these measurements, relevant questions are answered, such as which are the top-10 DNS providers, if there is DNS centralization, and how dependent countries are on such providers., Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures

Cybersecurity planning is challenging for digitized companies that want adequate protection without overspending money. Currently, the lack of investments and perverse economic incentives are the root cause of cyberattacks, which results in several economic impacts on companies worldwide. Therefore, cybersecurity planning has to consider technical and economic dimensions to help companies achieve a better cybersecurity strategy. This article introduces SECAdvisor, a tool to support cybersecurity planning using economic models. SECAdvisor allows to (a) understand the risks and valuation of different businesses' information, (b) calculate the optimal investment in cybersecurity for a company, (c) receive a recommendation of protections based on the budget available and demands, and (d) compare protection solutions in terms of cost-efficiency. Furthermore, evaluations on usability and real-world training activities performed using SECAdvisor are discussed., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures, 2 tables, 9 equations

Hospital infrastructures are always in evidence in periods of crisis, such as natural disasters or pandemic events, under stress. The recent COVID-19 pandemic exposed several inefficiencies in hospital systems over a relatively long period. Among these inefficiencies are human factors, such as how to manage staff during periods of high demand, and technical factors, including the management of Portable Medical Devices (PMD), such as mechanical ventilators, capnography monitors, infusion pumps, or pulse oximeters. These devices, which are vital for monitoring patients or performing different procedures, were found to have a high turnover during high-demand, resulting in inefficiencies and more pressure on medical teams. Thus, the work PMD-Track evaluates in detail two popular indoor tracking approaches concerning their accuracy, placement of beacons, and economic impacts. The key novelty of PMD-Track relies on using smartphones provided to hospital employees, replacing typical stationary gateways spread across a hospital, functioning as mobile gateways with a front-end that assists staff in locating PMDs. As employees approach tagged PMDs, their smartphone automatically updates the location of spotted PMDs in real-time, providing room-level localization data with up to 83% accuracy for fingerprinting and 35% for multilateration. In addition, fingerprinting is 45% cheaper than multilateration over the course of five years. Practical experiments were evaluated based on two locations in Z\"urich, Switzerland., Comment: 18 pages

Time resolved measurements of the linear magneto-optical Kerr rotation reveal that, in the {\it 3d} ferromagnets Fe, Co and Ni, the amplitude of the demagnetization increases linearly with the fluence of the light. We rationalize this phenomenon as being linearly driven by the increase in temperature, the electron-phonon and electron-magnon scattering, and a reduction of the inter-atomic exchange. The amplitude of the latter phenomenon, which until the present study has been widely overlooked, is obtained through \textit{ab initio} density functional theory calculations, and is argued to be the principal source of demagnetization in Ni and Co, while still contributing largely in Fe.

Nuclear Experiment - Abstract
In this contribution the latest measurements of real and virtual photons in Pb-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}} = 5.02$ TeV from the ALICE Collaboration are presented. The extracted photon spectra are compared to predictions from state-of-the-art models that explicitly include the whole evolution of the heavy-ion collision as well as measurements at lower energies. Experimental developments that in the future will help to extend the range and procession of the measurements are introduced before concluding with an outlook to possible future measurements at the LHC., Comment: Submission to proceedings for 28th International Nuclear Physics Conference (INPC 2022)

Physics - Fluid Dynamics - Abstract
Understand and predict the dynamics of dispersed micro-objects in microfluidics is crucial in numerous natural, industrial and technological situations. In this paper, we experimentally characterized the equilibrium velocity $V$ and lateral position $\varepsilon$ of various dispersed micro-objects such as beads, bubbles and drops, in a cylindrical microchannel over an unprecedent wide range of parameters. By systematically varying the dimensionless object size ($d \in [0.1; 1]$), the viscosity ratio ($\lambda \in [10^{-2}; \infty[$), the density ratio ($\varphi \in [10^{-3}; 2]$), the Reynolds number ($\Re \in [10^{-2}; 10^2]$), and the capillary number ($\text{Ca} \in [10^{-3}; 0.3]$), we offer a general study exploring various dynamics from the nonderformable viscous regime to the deformable visco-inertio-capillary regime, thus enabling to highlight the sole and combined roles of inertia and capillary effects on lateral migration. The experiments are compared and well-agree with a steady 3D Navier-Stokes model for incompressible two-phase fluids including both the effects of inertia and possible interfacial deformations. This model enables to rationalize the experiments and to provide an exhaustive parametric analysis on the influence of the main parameters of the problem, mainly on two aspects: the stability of the centered position and the velocity of the dispersed object. Interestingly, we propose a useful correlation for the object velocity $V$ as functions of the $d$, $\varepsilon$ and $\lambda$, obtained in the $\text{Re}=\text{Ca}=0$ limit, but actually valid for a larger range of values of $\text{Re}$ and $\text{Ca}$ in the linear regimes., Comment: 22 pages, 11 figures, submitted to Journal of Fluid Mechanics

For Run 4, ALICE is pioneering the construction of truly cylindrical tracking layers, which will improve the measurements of heavy-flavour hadrons and dielectrons. In addition, a Forward Calorimeter (FoCal) for the measurement of direct photons is being developed to access the gluon distributions of nucleons and nuclei at low $x$. For Run 5 and beyond, ALICE 3 is proposed. It combines a unique high-resolution vertex detector with a silicon pixel tracker and modern particle identification solutions over a large acceptance. This will permit heavy-flavour and dielectron measurements with unprecedented precision to access fundamental properties and dynamics of the quark-gluon plasma (QGP). We will discuss the upgrade plans, report on R\&D results for ITS3 and FoCal, and present the requirements and concepts for ALICE 3., Comment: Contribution to the proceedings for INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON ULTRA-RELATIVISTIC NUCLEUS-NUCLEUS COLLISIONS (Quark Matter 2022)

The ultrafast and element-specific response of magnetic systems containing ferromagnetic 3d transition metals and 4d/5d heavy metals is of interest both from a fundamental as well as an applied research perspective. However, to date no consensus about the main microscopic processes describing the interplay between intrinsic 3d and induced 4d/5d magnetic moments upon femtosecond laser excitation exist. In this work, we study the ultrafast response of CoFeB/Pt bilayers by probing element-specific, core-to-valence band transitions in the extreme ultraviolet spectral range using high harmonic radiation. We show that the combination of magnetic scattering simulations and analysis of the energy- and time-dependent magnetic asymmetries allows to accurately disentangle the element-specific response in spite of overlapping Co and Fe M$_{2,3}$ as well as Pt O$_{2,3}$ and N$_7$ resonances. We find a considerably smaller demagnetization time constant as well as much larger demagnetization amplitudes of the induced moment of Pt compared to the intrinsic moment of CoFeB. Our results are in agreement with enhanced spin-flip probabilities due to the high spin-orbit coupling localized at the heavy metal Pt, as well as with the recently formulated hypothesis that a laser generated, incoherent magnon population within the ferromagnetic film leads to an overproportional reduction of the induced magnetic moment of Pt.
