Abstract

Featuring satellite imagery from Google Earth, this guide provides a unique, highly visual tour of lakes across the globe, from the simple to the complex, the nearby to the remote. Clear text accompanies each image and identifies important aspects of each lake along with such information as its coordinates, scale, and altitudes, if relevant. From the many aspects of lake science including water budgets, temperature regimes, mixing types, biology/ecology, and chemistry, the book concentrates on the genesis of lakes and other closed forms containing water, moisture/swamps or minerals. Its organisation follows different forms of lake origin (often connected to the question of age) such as extra-terrestrial meteor impacts, structural depressions by tectonic activity, patterning of joints or faults, volcanic origin, or the forming influence of glacier ice, subterranean permafrost, littoral processes, running water, wind, and solution of rocks (karst forms). Coverage also deals with temporal variations in lake existence within the context of climate change in the past and the future. In addition, special chapters are devoted to saline (or salt) lakes, and — in their evaporated forms — to saltpans. Providing essential information at a glance, this guide will be help both specialists and general readers better understand the world's lakes as well as see them in a new perspective.

Abstract

Future relative sea-level (RSL) rise is one of the most serious coastal hazards worldwide, in particular in the Caribbean region. RSL is a function of global (glacioeustasy, steric effect), regional (e.g. glacioisostatic adjustment [GIA], gravitational effects inducing deformation of the Earth, upper/lower mantle viscosity, etc.) and local (lithosome compaction, vertical neotectonic movement) factors which are connected via a complex pattern of interference. Information on past RSL supports inferences on upper limits of ice shield ablation, estimates of anthropogenic contribution to historical and future RSL rise and calibration of rheological models of the earth. We present the first RSL curve for the island of Bonaire (S Caribbean). Forty-two C-14 ages from 20 sediment cores taken from nine different sedimentary archives along the coast were used. The sedimentary environment of each index point was linked to a palaeo-water depth based on literature and field observations. The index points trace a local RSL history of decelerating rise since 7000-6000 years ago and subsequent asymptotical approximation, similar to existing RSL curves from Curacao and Venezuela. The results were compared to a simulation of Holocene sea-level history (reference model) which considers global effects and regional GIA (including consequences for geopotential and vertical position of earth surface). Even though the central and NW parts of Bonaire experienced slow tectonic uplift of up to 50 cm since the mid-Holocene and tentative correction for compaction was applied, the new RSL curve for Bonaire runs slightly below the reference model. A further outcome of this study is the detection of a so far unknown micro-graben structure with a vertical slip rate of c. 1.5 mm yr(-1) at Boka Bartol, which was identified based on depth discrepancies of well-dated isochronous high-energy wave deposits.

Abstract

Prehistoric storm records are relatively scarce in most parts of the world. This article presents storm records derived from coral rubble-based geological archives of the Houtman Abrolhos Archipelago located off the west coast of Australia, where the southernmost coral reefs of the Indian Ocean are found. Winter storm swell from the circum-Antarctic Brave Westerlies, as well as tropical cyclone waves, have left numerous ridge systems on dozens of islands of the archipelago, all composed of coral rubble from adjacent reefs. At three islands, seven ridge systems were dated by three different methods: U-series (68 dates), radiocarbon (64 dates), electron spin resonance (7 dates); 139 radiometric dates span the last 5500 years of the Holocene. In contrast to the geomorphological interpretation, the age sequences show inversions, hiatuses and different ages for the same ridge, all pointing to complicated ridge formation processes. Time gaps, some exceeding 1000 years, are interpreted as phases of erosion and not as phases without storm activity. Copyright (C) 2012 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
