Among binary asteroids, (35107) 1991VH stands out as unique given the likely chaotic rotation within its secondary component. The source of this excited dynamical state is unknown. In this work we demonstrate that a past close encounter with Earth could have provided the necessary perturbation to allow the natural internal dynamics, characterized by spin-orbit coupling, to evolve the system into its current dynamical state. In this hypothesis, the secondary of 1991VH was previously in a classical 1:1 spin-orbit resonance with an orbit period likely between 28-35 hours before being perturbed by an Earth encounter within $\sim80,000$ km. We find if the energy dissipation within the secondary is relatively inefficient, this excited dynamical state could persist to today and produce the observed ground-based measurements. The Near-Earth binary asteroid Didymos was the target of a planetary defense demonstration mission DART in September 2022. The smaller binary component, Dimorphos, was impacted by the spacecraft in order to measure momentum transfer in kinetic impacts into rubble piles. DART and associated Earth-based observation campaigns have provided a wealth of scientific data on the Didymos-Dimorphos binary. DART revealed a largely oblate and ellipsoidal shape of Dimorphos before the impact, while the post-impact observations suggest that Dimorphos now has a prolate shape. Here we add those data points to the known properties of small binary asteroids and propose new paradigms of the radiative binary YORP (BYORP) effect as well as tidal dissipation in small binaries. We find that relatively spheroidal bodies like Dimorphos made of small debris may experience a weaker and more size-dependent BYORP effect than previously thought. This could explain the observed values of period drift in several well-characterized binaries. We also propose that energy dissipation in small binaries is dominated by relatively brief episodes of large-scale movement of (likely surface) materials, rather than long-term steady-state tidal dissipation. We propose that one such episode was triggered on Dimorphos by the DART impact. Depending on the longevity of this high-dissipation regime, it is possible that Dimorphos will be more dynamically relaxed in time for the Hera mission than it was in the weeks following the impact., Comment: Accepted for PSJ

While the secondary in a binary asteroid plays an important role in the precession of the mutual orbit, this role has not been thoroughly studied. Given the complex spin-orbit coupled dynamics in binary asteroids, we use a numerical approach to study the relationship between the secondary's shape and spin and the apsidal precession rate of the orbit. Using this approach in conjunction with observations of Didymos, we find it is likely that Dimorphos was significantly reshaped as a result of the DART impact, with its new shape more elongated than the pre-impact shape. The Hill Restricted 4-Body Problem (HR4BP) is a coherent time-periodic model that can be used to represent motion in the Sun-Earth-Moon (SEM) system. Periodic orbits were computed in this model to better understand the periodic orbit family structures that exist in these types of systems. First, periodic orbits in the Circular Restricted 3-Body Problem (CR3BP) representation of the Earth-Moon (EM) system were identified. A Melnikov-type function was used to identify a set of candidate points on the EM CR3BP periodic orbits to start a continuation algorithm. A pseudo-arclength continuation scheme was then used to obtain the corresponding periodic orbit families in the HR4BP when including the effect of the Sun. While contact binary objects are common in the solar system, their formation mechanism is unclear. In this work we examine several contact binaries and calculate the necessary strength parameters that allow the two lobes to merge without the smaller of the two being gravitationally destroyed by the larger. We find a small but non-zero amount of cohesion or a large friction angle is required for the smaller lobe to survive the merging process, consistent with observations. This means it is possible for two previously separated rubble piles to experience a collapse of their mutual orbit and form a contact binary. The necessary strength required to survive this merger depends on the relative size, shape, and density of the body, with prolate shapes requiring more cohesion than oblate shapes., Comment: Accepted to Astrophysical Journal Letters

We explore binary asteroid formation by spin-up and rotational disruption considering the NASA DART mission's encounter with the Didymos-Dimorphos binary, which was the first small binary visited by a spacecraft. Using a suite of $N$-body simulations, we follow the gravitational accumulation of a satellite from meter-sized particles following a mass-shedding event from a rapidly rotating primary. The satellite's formation is chaotic, as it undergoes a series of collisions, mergers, and close gravitational encounters with other moonlets, leading to a wide range of outcomes in terms of the satellite's mass, shape, orbit, and rotation state. We find that a Dimorphos-like satellite can form rapidly, in a matter of days, following a realistic mass-shedding event in which only ${\sim}2-3\%$ of the primary's mass is shed. Satellites can form in synchronous rotation due to their formation near the Roche limit. There is a strong preference for forming prolate (elongated) satellites, although some simulations result in oblate spheroids like Dimorphos. The distribution of simulated secondary shapes is broadly consistent with other binary systems, measured through radar or lightcurves. Unless Dimorphos's shape is an outlier, and considering the observational bias against lightcurve-based determination of secondary elongations for oblate bodies, we suggest there could be a significant population of oblate secondaries. If these satellites initially form with elongated shapes, a yet-unidentified pathway is needed to explain how they become oblate. With the successful impact of the NASA DART spacecraft in the Didymos-Dimorphos binary asteroid system, we provide an initial analysis of the post-impact perturbed binary asteroid dynamics. To compare our simulation results with observations, we introduce a set of "observable elements" calculated using only the physical separation of the binary asteroid, rather than traditional Keplerian elements. Using numerical methods that treat the fully spin-orbit-coupled dynamics, we estimate the system's mass and the impact-induced changes in orbital velocity, semimajor axis, and eccentricity. We find that the changes to the mutual orbit depend strongly on the separation distance between Didymos and Dimorphos at the time of impact. If Dimorphos enters a tumbling state after the impact, this may be observable through changes in the system's eccentricity and orbit period. We also find that any DART-induced reshaping of Dimorphos would generally reduce the required change in orbital velocity to achieve the measured post-impact orbit period and will be assessed by the ESA Hera mission in 2027., Comment: Accepted for publication in PSJ

The catalog of km-sized near-Earth objects (NEOs) is nearly complete. Typical impact monitoring analyses search for possible impacts over the next 100 years and none of the km-sized objects represent an impact threat over that time interval. Assessing the impact risk over longer time scales is a challenge since orbital uncertainties grow. To overcome this limitation we analyze the evolution of the Minimum Orbit Intersection Distance (MOID), which bounds the closest possible encounters between the asteroid and the Earth. The evolution of the MOID highlights NEOs that are in the vicinity of the Earth for longer periods of time, and we propose a method to estimate the probability of a deep Earth encounter during these periods. The NASA Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) mission performed a kinetic impact on asteroid Dimorphos, the satellite of the binary asteroid (65803) Didymos, at 23:14 UTC on September 26, 2022 as a planetary defense test. DART was the first hypervelocity impact experiment on an asteroid at size and velocity scales relevant to planetary defense, intended to validate kinetic impact as a means of asteroid deflection. Here we report the first determination of the momentum transferred to an asteroid by kinetic impact. Based on the change in the binary orbit period, we find an instantaneous reduction in Dimorphos's along-track orbital velocity component of 2.70 +/- 0.10 mm/s, indicating enhanced momentum transfer due to recoil from ejecta streams produced by the impact. For a Dimorphos bulk density range of 1,500 to 3,300 kg/m$^3$, we find that the expected value of the momentum enhancement factor, $\beta$, ranges between 2.2 and 4.9, depending on the mass of Dimorphos. If Dimorphos and Didymos are assumed to have equal densities of 2,400 kg/m$^3$, $\beta$= 3.61 +0.19/-0.25 (1 $\sigma$). These $\beta$ values indicate that significantly more momentum was transferred to Dimorphos from the escaping impact ejecta than was incident with DART. While no known asteroid poses a threat to Earth for at least the next century, the catalog of near-Earth asteroids is incomplete for objects whose impacts would produce regional devastation. Several approaches have been proposed to potentially prevent an asteroid impact with Earth by deflecting or disrupting an asteroid. A test of kinetic impact technology was identified as the highest priority space mission related to asteroid mitigation. NASA's Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) mission is the first full-scale test of kinetic impact technology. The mission's target asteroid was Dimorphos, the secondary member of the S-type binary near-Earth asteroid (65803) Didymos. This binary asteroid system was chosen to enable ground-based telescopes to quantify the asteroid deflection caused by DART's impact. While past missions have utilized impactors to investigate the properties of small bodies those earlier missions were not intended to deflect their targets and did not achieve measurable deflections. Here we report the DART spacecraft's autonomous kinetic impact into Dimorphos and reconstruct the impact event, including the timeline leading to impact, the location and nature of the DART impact site, and the size and shape of Dimorphos. The successful impact of the DART spacecraft with Dimorphos and the resulting change in Dimorphos's orbit demonstrates that kinetic impactor technology is a viable technique to potentially defend Earth if necessary., Comment: Accepted by Nature

Some active asteroids have been proposed to be the result of impact events. Because active asteroids are generally discovered serendipitously only after their tail formation, the process of the impact ejecta evolving into a tail has never been directly observed. NASA's Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) mission, apart from having successfully changed the orbital period of Dimorphos, demonstrated the activation process of an asteroid from an impact under precisely known impact conditions. Here we report the observations of the DART impact ejecta with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) from impact time T+15 minutes to T+18.5 days at spatial resolutions of ~2.1 km per pixel. Our observations reveal a complex evolution of ejecta, which is first dominated by the gravitational interaction between the Didymos binary system and the ejected dust and later by solar radiation pressure. The lowest-speed ejecta dispersed via a sustained tail that displayed a consistent morphology with previously observed asteroid tails thought to be produced by impact. The ejecta evolution following DART's controlled impact experiment thus provides a framework for understanding the fundamental mechanisms acting on asteroids disrupted by natural impact., Comment: accepted by Nature

The dynamics and control of a satellite in proximity to the asteroid Apophis across its Earth close approach in 2029 is evaluated and investigated. First, the feasibility of carrying out close proximity operations about Apophis when in its heliocentric orbit phase is evaluated and shown to be feasible. Then three different types of close proximity motion relative to Apophis are analyzed that will enable a spacecraft to take observations throughout the Earth close approach. These are maintaining a relative orbit that is somewhat distant from Apophis, hovering along the Earth-Apophis line, or maintaining orbit about Apophis through the flyby. Spin state predictions for defunct satellites in geosynchronous earth orbit (GEO) are valuable for active debris removal and servicing missions as well as material shedding studies and attitude-dependent solar radiation pressure (SRP) modeling. Previous studies have shown that solar radiation torques can explain the observed spin state evolution of some GEO objects via the Yarkovsky-O'Keefe-Radzievskii-Paddack (YORP) effect. These studies have focused primarily on uniform rotation. Nevertheless, many objects are in non-principal axis rotation (i.e. tumbling). Recent exploration of the tumbling regime for the family of retired GOES 8-12 satellites has shown intriguing YORP-driven behavior including spin-orbit coupling, tumbling cycles, and tumbling period resonances. To better explore and understand the tumbling regime, we develop a semi-analytical tumbling-averaged rotational dynamics model. The derivation requires analytically averaging over the satellite's torque-free rotation, defined by Jacobi elliptic functions. Averaging is facilitated by a second order Fourier series approximation of the facet illumination function. The averaged model is found to capture and explain the general long-term behavior of the full dynamics while reducing computation time by roughly three orders of magnitude. This improved computation efficiency promises to enable rapid exploration of general long-term rotational dynamics for defunct satellites and rocket bodies.

Synchronous binary asteroids can experience libration about their tidally-locked equilibrium, which will result in energy dissipation. This is an important topic to the Asteroid Impact and Deflection Assessment, where excitation caused by the DART kinetic impact in the Didymos binary asteroid system may be reduced through dissipation before Hera arrives to survey the effects of the impact. We develop a numeric model for energy dissipation in binary asteroids to explore how different system configurations affect the rate of energy dissipation. We find tumbling within the synchronous state eliminates a systematic trend in libration damping on short timescales (several years), but not over long times (hundreds of years) depending on the material conditions. Furthermore, damping of libration, eccentricity, and fluctuations in the semimajor axis are primarily dependent on the stiffness of the secondary, whereas the semimajor axis secular expansion rate is dictated by the stiffness of the primary, as expected. Systems experiencing stable planar libration in the secondary can see a noticeable reduction in libration amplitude after only a few years depending on the stiffness of the secondary, and thus dissipation should be considered during Hera's survey of Didymos. For a very dissipative secondary undergoing stable libration, Hera may be able to calculate the rate of libration damping in Dimorphos and therefore constrain its tidal parameters.

In this paper we use a Soft-Sphere Discrete Element method code to simulate the transmission and study the attenuation of a seismic wave. Then, we apply our findings to the different space missions that have had to touch the surface of different small bodies. Additionally, we do the same in regards to the seismic wave generated by the hypervelocity impacts produced by the DART and Hayabusa2 missions once the shock wave transforms into a seismic wave. We find that even at very low pressures, such as those present in the interior of asteroids, the seismic wave speed can still be on the order of hundreds of m/s depending on the velocity of the impact that produces the wave. As expected from experimental measurements, our results show that wave velocity is directly dependent on $P^{1/6}$, where $P$ is the total pressure (confining pressure plus wave induced pressure). Regardless of the pressure of the system and the velocity of the impact (in the investigated range), energy dissipation is extremely high. These results provide us with a way to anticipate the extent to which a seismic wave could have been capable of moving some small particles on the surface of a small body upon contact with a spacecraft. Additionally, this rapid energy dissipation would imply that even hypervelocity impacts should perturb only the external layer of a self-gravitating aggregate on which segregation and other phenomena could take place. NASA's Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) spacecraft is planned to impact the natural satellite of (65803) Didymos, Dimorphos, around 23:14 UTC on 26 September 2022, causing a reduction in its orbital period that will be measurable with ground-based observations. This test of kinetic impactor technology will provide the first estimate of the momentum transfer enhancement factor $\beta$ at a realistic scale, wherein ejecta from the impact provides an additional deflection to the target. Earth-based observations, the LICIACube spacecraft (to be detached from DART prior to impact), and ESA's follow-up Hera mission to launch in 2024, will provide additional characterization of the deflection test. Together Hera and DART comprise the Asteroid Impact and Deflection Assessment (AIDA) cooperation between NASA and ESA. Here the predicted dynamical states of the binary system upon arrival and after impact are presented. The assumed dynamically relaxed state of the system will be excited by the impact, leading to an increase in eccentricity and slight tilt of the orbit together with enhanced libration of Dimorphos with amplitude dependent on the currently poorly known target shape. Free rotation around the moon's long axis may also be triggered and the orbital period will experience variations from seconds to minutes over timescales of days to months. Shape change of either body due to cratering or mass wasting triggered by crater formation and ejecta may affect $\beta$ but can be constrained through additional measurements. The propagation of small bodies in the Solar system is driven by the combination of planetary encounters that cause abrupt changes in their orbits and secular long-term perturbations. We propose a propagation strategy that combines both of these effects into a single framework for long-term, rapid propagation of small bodies in the inner Solar System. The analytical secular perturbation of Jupiter is interrupted to numerically solve planetary encounters, which last a small fraction of the simulation time. The proposed propagation method is compared to numerical integrations in the Solar system, effectively capturing properties of the numerical solutions in a fraction of the computational time. We study the orbital history of the Janus mission targets: (35107) 1991 VH and (175706) 1996 FG3, obtaining a stochastic representation of their long-term dynamics and frequencies of very close encounters. The Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) mission will be the first test of a kinetic impactor as a means of planetary defense. In late 2022, DART will collide with Dimorphos, the secondary in the Didymos binary asteroid system. The impact will cause a momentum transfer from the spacecraft to the binary asteroid, changing the orbit period of Dimorphos and forcing it to librate in its orbit. Owing to the coupled dynamics in binary asteroid systems, the orbit and libration state of Dimorphos are intertwined. Thus, as the secondary librates, it also experiences fluctuations in its orbit period. These variations in the orbit period are dependent on the magnitude of the impact perturbation, as well as the system's state at impact and the moments of inertia of the secondary. In general, any binary asteroid system whose secondary is librating will have a non-constant orbit period on account of the secondary's fluctuating spin rate. The orbit period variations are typically driven by two modes: a long-period and short-period, each with significant amplitudes on the order of tens of seconds to several minutes. The fluctuating orbit period offers both a challenge and an opportunity in the context of the DART mission. Orbit period oscillations will make determining the post-impact orbit period more difficult, but can also provide information about the system's libration state and the DART impact.

The NASA Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) mission is a planetary defense-driven test of a kinetic impactor on Dimorphos, the satellite of the binary asteroid 65803 Didymos. DART will intercept Dimorphos at a relative speed of ${\sim}6.5 \text{ km s}^{-1}$, perturbing Dimorphos's orbital velocity and changing the binary orbital period. We present three independent methods (one analytic and two numerical) to investigate the post-impact attitude stability of Dimorphos as a function of its axial ratios, $a/b$ and $b/c$ ($a \ge b \ge c$), and the momentum transfer efficiency $\beta$. The first method uses a novel analytic approach in which we assume a circular orbit and a point-mass primary that identifies four fundamental frequencies of motion corresponding to the secondary's mean motion, libration, precession, and nutation frequencies. At resonance locations among these four frequencies, we find that attitude instabilities are possible. Using two independent numerical codes, we recover many of the resonances predicted by the analytic model and indeed show attitude instability. With one code, we use fast Lyapunov indicators to show that the secondary's attitude can evolve chaotically near the resonance locations. Then, using a high-fidelity numerical model, we find that Dimorphos enters a chaotic tumbling state near the resonance locations and is especially prone to unstable rotation about its long axis, which can be confirmed by ESA's Hera mission arriving at Didymos in late 2026. We also show that a fully coupled treatment of the spin and orbital evolution of both bodies is crucial to accurately model the long-term evolution of the secondary's spin state and libration amplitude. The Yarkovsky--O'Keefe--Radzievskii--Paddack (YORP) effect governs the spin evolution of small asteroids. The axial component of YORP, which alters the rotation rate of the asteroid, is mostly independent of its thermal inertia, while the obliquity component is very sensitive to the thermal model of the asteroid. Here we develop a semi-analytic theory for the obliquity component of YORP. We integrate an approximate thermal model over the surface of an asteroid, and find an analytic expression for the obliquity component in terms of two YORP coefficients. This approach allows us to investigate the overall evolution of asteroid rotation state, and to generalize the results previously obtained in the case of zero thermal inertia. The proposed theory also explains how a non-zero obliquity component of YORP originates even for a symmetric asteroid due to its finite thermal inertia. In many cases, this causes equatorial planes of asteroids to align with their orbital planes. The studied non-trivial behavior of YORP as a function of thermal model allows for a new kind of rotational equilibria, which can have important evolutionary consequences for asteroids., Comment: Accepted to AJ

We numerically investigate how an asteroid's elongation controls the sensitivity of its surface to tidal effects during a distant planetary encounter beyond the Roche limit. We analyze the surface slope and its variation by considering the shape elongation, as well as the spin period and orbital conditions. The analytical theory of satellite orbits in an atmosphere developed by King-Hele remains widely in use for satellite mission design because of its accurate approximation to numerical integration under simplifying assumptions. Over the course of six decades, modifications to the theory have addressed many of its weaknesses. However, in all subsequent modifications of the original theory, the assumption of a constant drag-coefficient has been retained. The drag-coefficient is a dynamic parameter that governs the physical interaction between the atmosphere and the satellite and depends on ambient as well as satellite specific factors. In this work, Fourier series expansion models of the drag-coefficient are incorporated in the original King-Hele theory to capture time-variations of the drag-coefficient in averaging integrals. The modified theory is validated through simulations that demonstrate the attained improvements in approximating numerical results over the original King-Hele formulation., Comment: 23 pages, 15 figures. Proximity observations by OSIRIS-REx and Hayabusa2 provided clues on the shape evolution processes of the target asteroids, (101955) Bennu and (162173) Ryugu. Their oblate shapes with equatorial ridges, or the so-called top shapes, may have evolved due to their rotational conditions at present and in the past. Different shape evolution scenarios were previously proposed; Bennu's top shape may have been driven by surface processing, while Ryugu's may have been developed due to large deformation. These two scenarios seem to be inconsistent. Here, we revisit the structural analyses in earlier works and fill a gap to connect these explanations. We also apply a semi-analytical technique for computing the cohesive strength distribution in a uniformly rotating triaxial ellipsoid to characterize the global failure of top-shaped bodies. Assuming that the structure is uniform, our semi-analytical approach describes the spatial variations in failed regions at different spin periods; surface regions are the most sensitive at longer spin periods, while interiors fail structurally at shorter spin periods. This finding suggests that the shape evolution of a top shape may vary due to rotation and internal structure, which can explain the different evolution scenarios of Bennu's and Ryugu's top shapes. Over one quarter of white dwarfs contain observable metallic debris from the breakup of exo-asteroids. Understanding the physical and orbital history of this debris would enable us to self-consistently link planetary system formation and fate. One major debris reservoir is generated by YORP-induced rotational fission during the giant branch phases of stellar evolution, where the stellar luminosity can exceed the Sun's by four orders of magnitude. Here, we determine the efficacy of the giant branch YORP effect for asteroids with nonzero internal strength, and model post-fission evolution by imposing simple analytic fragmentation prescriptions. We find that even the highest realistic internal strengths cannot prevent the widespread fragmentation of asteroids and the production of a debris field over 100 au in size. We compute the number of successive fission events as they occur in progressively smaller time intervals as the star ascends the giant branches, providing a way to generate size distributions of asteroid fragments. The results are highly insensitive to progenitor stellar mass. We also conclude that the ease with which giant branch YORP breakup can generate binary asteroid subsystems is strongly dependent on internal strength. This paper considers the energy required for collections of finite density bodies to undergo escape under internal gravitational interactions alone. As the level of the system energy is increased there are different combinations of components that can escape, until the total energy becomes positive, when the entire system can undergo mutual disruption. The results are also defined for bodies modeled as a continuum. These results provide rigorous constraints for the disruption of rubble pile asteroids when only considering gravitational interaction effects, with the energy provided by rotation of an initial collection of the system. The emergent behavior of the F2BP is highly coupled translational and rotational mutual motion of the mass distributions. A large fraction of characterized binary asteroids appear to be at, or near, the doubly synchronous equilibrium, which occurs when both bodies are tidally-locked and in a circular co-orbit. Stable oscillations about this equilibrium can be shown, for the nonplanar system, to be combinations of seven fundamental frequencies of the system and the mutual orbit rate. The fundamental frequencies arise as the linear periods of center manifolds identified about the equilibrium which are heavily influenced by each body's mass parameters. We leverage these eight dynamical constraints to investigate the observability of binary asteroid mass parameters via dynamical observations. This is accomplished by deriving a relationship between the fundamental frequencies and mass parameters for doubly synchronous systems. This relationship allows us to show the sensitivity of the dynamics to changes in the mass parameters, first for the planar dynamics, and then for the nonplanar dynamics. In so doing we are able to predict the idealized estimation covariance of the mass parameters based on observation quality and define idealized observation accuracies for desired mass parameter certainties. We apply these tools to 617 Patroclus, a doubly synchronous Trojan binary and flyby target of the LUCY mission, as well as the Pluto and Charon system in order to predict mutual behavior, Comment: 45 pages, 11 figures. The migration of cohesive regolith on the surface of an otherwise monolithic or strong asteroid is studied using theoretical and simulation models. The theory and simulations show that under an increasing spin rate (such as due to the YORP effect), the regolith covering is preferentially lost across certain regions of the body. For regolith with little or no cohesive strength, failure occurs by landsliding from the mid latitudes of the body at high enough spin rates. As the cohesive strength of the regolith increases, failure occurs by fission of grains (or coherent chunks of grains) across a greater extent of latitudes and eventually will first occur at the equator. As the spin rate is further increased, failure regions migrate from the first failure point to higher and lower latitudes. Eventually failure will encompass the equatorial region, however there always remains a region of high latitudes (around the poles) that will not undergo failure for arbitrarily high spin rates (unless disturbed by some other phenomenon). With these results a scaling law is derived that can be used to determine whether observed asteroids could retain surface regolith grains of a given size. 162173 Ryugu, the target of Hayabusa2, has a round shape with an equatorial ridge, which is known as a spinning top-shape. A strong centrifugal force is a likely contributor to Ryugu's top-shaped features. Observations by Optical Navigation Camera onboard Hayabusa2 show a unique longitudinal variation in geomorphology; the western side of this asteroid, later called the western bulge, has a smooth surface and a sharp equatorial ridge, compared to the other side. Here, we propose a structural deformation process that generated the western bulge. Applying the mission-derived shape model, we employ a finite element model technique to analyze the locations that experience structural failure within the present shape. Assuming that materials are uniformly distributed, our model shows the longitudinal variation in structurally failed regions when the spin period is shorter than ~3.75 h. Ryugu is structurally intact in the subsurface region of the western bulge while other regions are sensitive to structural failure. We infer that this variation is indicative of the deformation process that occurred in the past, and the western bulge is more relaxed structurally than the other region. Our analysis also shows that this deformation process might occur at a spin period between ~3.5 h and ~3.0 h, providing the cohesive strength ranging between ~4 Pa and ~10 Pa., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures, published in the Astrophysical Journal Letters, 874, 1, L10

We observed the near-Earth asteroid (101955) Bennu from the ground in 1999 and 2005, and with the Hubble Space Telescope in 2012, to constrain its rotation rate. The data reveal an acceleration of $2.64 \pm 1.05 \times 10^{-6} \mathrm{deg\ day}^{-2}$, which could be due to a change in the moment of inertia of Bennu or to spin up from the YORP effect or other source of angular momentum. The best solution is within 1 sigma of the period determined by Nolan et al. (2013). The OSIRIS-REx mission will determine the rotation state independently in 2019. Those measurements should show whether the change in rotation rate is a steady increase (due, for example, to the YORP effect) or some other phenomenon. The precise shape and surface properties measured by the OSIRIS-REx science team will allow for a better understanding of variations in rotation rate of small asteroids.

There is a correlation between the components of the YORP effect of most asteroids, which drives the obliquity and spin rate of the affected bodies in a consistent pattern. This allows for a clear and unambiguous picture for how the spin rates and poles of asteroids affected by YORP will evolve and simplifies the overall picture for how populations will migrate on average. The YORP effect can also lead to a previously unexplored equilibrium state for affected bodies. This equilibrium state is a function of the usual "normal YORP" effect (which arises due to the global shape asymmetry of the asteroid) and the "tangential YORP" (which arises due the transport of thermal energy through rocky surface features). Estimates from current shape models show that 10-20\% of asteroids have the proper condition to be captured in this equilibrium state, indicating that the occurrence of this state may be significant. The existence of this attractor for the asteroid population means that objects affected by YORP may leave their usual YORP cycles and maintain a constant spin rate over long time periods -- this has significant implications for our interpretation of asteroid spin rate evolution and related theories for their physical evolution., Comment: 15 pages, 11 figures. Many asteroids are rubble piles with irregular shapes. While the irregular shapes of large asteroids may be attributed to collisional events, those of small asteroids may result from not only impact events but also rotationally induced failure, a long-term consequence of small torques caused by, for example, solar radiation pressure. A better understanding of shape deformation induced by such small torques will allow us to give constraints on the evolution process of an asteroid and its structure. However, no quantitative study has been reported to provide the relationship between an asteroid's shape and its failure mode due to its fast rotation. Here, we use a finite element model (FEM) technique to analyze the failure modes and conditions of 24 asteroids with diameters less than 30 - 40 km, which were observed at high resolution by ground radar or asteroid exploration missions. Assuming that the material distribution is uniform, we investigate how these asteroids fail structurally at different spin rates. Our FEM simulations describe the detailed deformation mode of each irregularly shaped asteroid at fast spin. The failed regions depend on the original shape. Spheroidal objects structurally fail from the interior, while elongated objects experience structural failure on planes perpendicular to the minimum moment of inertia axes in the middle of their structure. Contact binary objects have structural failure across their most sensitive cross sections. We further investigate if our FEM analysis is consistent with earlier works that theoretically explored a uniformly rotating triaxial ellipsoid. The results show that global shape variations may significantly change the failure condition of an asteroid. The evolution of rotation states of small asteroids is governed by the YORP effect, nonetheless some asteroids can stop their YORP evolution by attaining a stable equilibrium. The same is true for binary asteroids subjected to the BYORP effect. Here we discuss a new type of equilibrium that combines these two, which is possible in a singly synchronous binary system. This equilibrium occurs when the normal YORP, the tangential YORP and the binary YORP compensate each other, and tidal torques distribute the angular momentum between the components of the system and dissipate energy. Such a system if unperturbed would remain singly synchronous in perpetuity with constant spin and orbit rates, as the tidal torques dissipate the incoming energy from impinging sunlight at the same rate. The probability of the existence of this kind of equilibrium in a binary system is found to be on the order of a few percent., Comment: Accepted to ApJL
