Search

The System for Measuring Overlap with Gas (SMOG2) at the LHCb detector enables the study of fixed-target ion-ion collisions at relativistic energies ($\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}\sim100$ GeV in the centre-of-mass). With input from \textit{ab initio} calculations of the structure of $^{16}$O and $^{20}$Ne, we compute 3+1D hydrodynamic predictions for the anisotropic flow of Pb+Ne and Pb+O collisions, to be tested with upcoming LHCb data. This will allow the detailed study of quark-gluon plasma (QGP) formation as well as experimental tests of the predicted nuclear shapes. Elliptic flow ($v_2$) in Pb+Ne collisions is greatly enhanced compared to the Pb+O baseline due to the shape of $^{20}$Ne, which is deformed in a bowling-pin geometry. Owing to the large $^{208}$Pb radius, this effect is seen in a broad centrality range, a unique feature of this collision configuration. Larger elliptic flow further enhances the quadrangular flow ($v_4$) of Pb+Ne collisions via non-linear coupling, and impacts the sign of the kurtosis of the elliptic flow vector distribution ($c_2\{4\}$). Exploiting the shape of $^{20}$Ne proves thus an ideal method to investigate the formation of QGP in fixed-target experiments at LHCb, and demonstrates the power of SMOG2 as a tool to image nuclear ground states.

Whether or not femto-scale droplets of quark-gluon plasma (QGP) are formed in so-called small systems at high-energy colliders is a pressing question in the phenomenology of the strong interaction. For proton-proton or proton-nucleus collisions the answer is inconclusive due to the large theoretical uncertainties plaguing the description of these processes. While upcoming data on collisions of $^{16}$O nuclei may mitigate these uncertainties in the near future, here we demonstrate the unique possibilities offered by complementing $^{16}$O$^{16}$O data with collisions of $^{20}$Ne ions. We couple both NLEFT and PGCM ab initio descriptions of the structure of $^{20}$Ne and $^{16}$O to hydrodynamic simulations of $^{16}$O$^{16}$O and $^{20}$Ne$^{20}$Ne collisions at high energy. We isolate the imprints of the bowling-pin shape of $^{20}$Ne on the collective flow of hadrons, which can be used to perform quantitative tests of the hydrodynamic QGP paradigm. In particular, we predict that the elliptic flow of $^{20}$Ne$^{20}$Ne collisions is enhanced by as much as 1.170(8)$_{\rm stat.}$(30)$_{\rm syst.}$ for NLEFT and 1.139(6)$_{\rm stat.}$(39)$_{\rm syst.}$ for PGCM relative to $^{16}$O$^{16}$O collisions for the 1% most central events. At the same time, theoretical uncertainties largely cancel when studying relative variations of observables between two systems. Ultracentral heavy ion collisions due to their exceptionally large multiplicity probe an interesting regime of quark-gluon plasma where the size is (mostly) fixed and fluctuations in the initial condition dominate. Spurred by the recent measurement of the CMS collaboration we investigate the driving factors of the increase of transverse momentum, including a complete analysis of the influence of the QCD equation of state. We present an estimate of the yield of hard probes expected for collisions of the isobars $^{96}_{44}$Ru and $^{96}_{40}$Zr at collision energies reachable at RHIC and the LHC\@. These yields are proportional to the number of binary nucleon-nucleon interactions, which is characteristically different due to the presence of the large neutron skin in $^{96}_{40}$Zr. This provides an independent opportunity to measure the difference between the neutron skin of $^{96}_{44}$Ru and $^{96}_{40}$Zr, which can provide an important constraint on the Equation of State of cold neutron-rich matter., Comment: 5 pages, 6 figures and an appendix. Emergent bulk properties of matter governed by the strong nuclear force give rise to physical phenomena across vastly different scales, ranging from the shape of atomic nuclei to the masses and radii of neutron stars. They can be accessed on Earth by measuring the spatial extent of the outer skin made of neutrons that characterises the surface of heavy nuclei. The isotope $^{208}$Pb, owing to its simple structure and neutron excess, has been in this context the target of many dedicated efforts. Here, we determine the neutron skin from measurements of particle distributions and their collective flow in $^{208}$Pb+$^{208}$Pb collisions at ultrarelativistic energy performed at the Large Hadron Collider, which are sensitive to the overall size of the colliding $^{208}$Pb ions. By means of state-of-the-art global analysis tools within the hydrodynamic model of heavy-ion collisions, we infer a neutron skin $\Delta r_{np}=0.217\pm0.058$ fm, consistent with nuclear theory predictions, and competitive in accuracy with a recent determination from parity-violating asymmetries in polarised electron scattering. We present an extended Bayesian analysis using Trajectum where the initial condition can now include binary scaling. For the far-from-equilibrium evolution before hydrodynamics we introduce an interpolation between free streaming and a holographically inspired evolution that exhibits fast hydrodynamization. We find strong evidence that binary scaling is incompatible with experimental data and find evidence that the holographic far-from-equilibrium evolution is preferred. According to the inflationary theory of cosmology, most elementary particles in the current universe were created during a period of reheating after inflation. In this work we self-consistently couple the Einstein-inflaton equations to a strongly coupled quantum field theory (QFT) as described by holography. We show that this leads to an inflating universe, a reheating phase and finally a universe dominated by the QFT in thermal equilibrium., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures and supplemental material. We show that the same QCD formalism that accounts for the suppression of high-$p_T$ hadron and jet spectra in heavy-ion collisions predicts medium-enhanced production of $c\bar{c}$ pairs in jets., Comment: 5 pages, 7 figures

A major goal of the hot QCD program, the extraction of the properties of the quark gluon plasma (QGP), is currently limited by our poor knowledge of the initial condition of the QGP, in particular how it is shaped from the colliding nuclei. To attack this limitation, we propose to exploit collisions of selected species to precisely assess how the initial condition changes under variations of the structure of the colliding ions. This knowledge, combined with event-by-event measures of particle correlations in the final state of heavy-ion collisions, will provide in turn a new way to probe the collective structure of nuclei, and to confront and exploit the predictions of state-of-the-art ab initio nuclear structure theories. Even though the total hadronic nucleus-nucleus cross section is among the most fundamental observables, it has only recently been measured precisely for lead-lead collisions at the LHC. This measurement implies the nucleon width should be below 0.7 fm, which is in contradiction with all known state-of-the-art Bayesian estimates. We study the implications of the smaller nucleon width on quark-gluon plasma properties such as the bulk viscosity. As particles traverse the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) formed during a heavy ion collision they undergo energy loss depending on the distance travelled. We study several temperature- and velocity-weighted path length distributions of non-interacting particles as they traverse the plasma using the Trajectum heavy ion code, including those of back-to-back path lengths. We use event-shape engineering (ESE) in combination with in-plane versus out-of-plane selection to accurately control these path lengths. The formalism of Baier-Dokshitzer-Mueller-Peign\'e-Schiff and Zakharov determines the modifications of parton splittings in the QCD plasma that arise from medium-induced gluon radiation. Here, we study medium-modifications of the gluon splitting into a quark--anti-quark pair in this BDMPS-Z formalism. We derive a compact path-integral formulation that resums effects from an arbitrary number of interactions with the medium to leading order in the $1/N_c^2$ expansion. Analyses in the $N=1$ opacity and the saddle point approximations reveal two phenomena: a medium-induced momentum broadening of the relative quark--anti-quark pair momentum that increases the invariant mass of quark--anti-quark pairs, and a medium-enhanced production of such pairs. We note that both effects are numerically sizeable if the average momentum transfer from the medium is comparable to the quark mass. In ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions, this condition is satisfied for charm quarks. The light curve of an isolated bright spot in a Keplarian orbit is studied to investigate the signature of the firewall around the event horizon of the black hole. An increase in total observed flux is found. In addition to that, for firewall case comparatively a longer time radiation is observed.

We analyze the effect of a spherically symmetric clump on the anisotropy of the cosmic microwave background radiation temperature in the framework of the standard model of cosmology with a non-zero cosmological constant $\Lambda$ and we show that it weakens the Rees-Sciama effect.

Nuclei with equal number of baryons but varying proton number (isobars) have many commonalities, but differ in both electric charge and nuclear structure. Relativistic collisions of such isobars provide unique opportunities to study the variation of the magnetic field, provided the nuclear structure is well understood. In this Letter we simulate collisions using several state-of-the-art parametrizations of the $^{96}_{40}$Zr and $^{96}_{44}$Ru isobars and show that a comparison with the exciting STAR measurement arXiv:2109.00131 of ultrarelativistic collisions can uniquely identify the structure of both isobars. This not only provides an urgently needed understanding of the structure of the Zirconium and Ruthenium isobars, but also paves the way for more detailed studies of nuclear structure using relativistic heavy ion collisions., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures. We construct optical appearance and profiled spectral lines of Keplerian discs with inner edge at the innermost circular geodesic located on both sides of the reflection-symmetric Simpson-Visser wormhole, in dependence on its parameter and inclination angle of a distant observer. We demonstrate significant differences in appearance of the discs on the our side and the other side of the wormhole. Large part of the other-side disc is always in the dark region of the image of the disc orbiting on the our side, enabling thus a simple distinguishing in observations. The profiled spectral lines generated by the disc on the other side (our side) demonstrate strong (weak) dependence on the spacetime parameter, and weak (strong) dependence on the inclination angle; they have also different shape, giving thus other clues to clearly distinguish in observations reflection-symmetric wormholes as alternatives to black holes.

We present the analysis how Ho\v{r}ava gravity and plasma influence the strong lensing phenomena around Kehagias-Sfetsos (KS) black holes. Using the semi-analytical Bozza method of strong lensing limit, we determine the multiple images, namely their separation S, and magnification R. We apply our calculations to the case of supermassive black hole having mass $M=6.5\times 10^{9}\textrm{M}_\odot$ and being at distance $d_0=16.8\textrm{Mpc}$ from observer corresponding to those observed in M87. We show that the sensitivity of image magnification, image separation, and shadow angular size on KS parameter $\omega$ and plasma parameter $k$ are of order from $1\%$ to $10\%$ for $R$ and $~\,16\%$ for $S$.

We introduce a global analysis of relativistic heavy ion collisions using Trajectum of a significantly higher precision and including a new option to vary the normalization of the centrality estimator. We use the posterior distribution of our parameters to generate a set of high statistics samples that allows us to make precise predictions including statistical and systematic uncertainties estimated from the model parameter distribution. The results are systematically compared with experiment whereby we also include many observables not included in the global analysis. This includes in particular (extremely) ultracentral anisotropic flow and mean transverse momentum, whereby we find satisfactory agreement with experiment where data is available. Lastly, we compute spectra and anisotropic flow for oxygen-oxygen collisions performed at RHIC and to be performed at the LHC and comment on how these collisions may inform us on properties of the Quark-Gluon-Plasma., Comment: 19 pages and 18 figures. The combined effect of a strong gravitational field and electromagnetic field in the vicinity of a generic regular black hole related to non-linear electrodynamics with Maxwellian weak-field limit on the radiation flux of a hot spot orbiting the regular black hole on the Keplerian disc has been studied. The frequency shift due to the strong gravitational field and magnification of the radiation related to gravitational lensing have been calculated. Holography has provided valuable insights into the time evolution of strongly coupled gauge theories in a fixed spacetime. However, this framework is insufficient if this spacetime is dynamical. We present a scheme to evolve a four-dimensional, strongly interacting gauge theory coupled to four-dimensional dynamical gravity in the semiclassical regime. As in previous work, we use holography to evolve the quantum gauge theory stress tensor, whereas the four-dimensional metric evolves according to Einstein's equations coupled to the expectation value of the stress tensor. The novelty of our approach is that both the boundary and the bulk spacetimes are constructed dynamically, one time step at a time. We analyze the reliability of several techniques for computing jet and hadron spectra at different collision energies. This is relevant for discovering energy loss in the upcoming oxygen-oxygen (OO) run at the LHC, for which a reference pp run is currently not planned. For hadrons and jets we compute the ratio of spectra between different pp collision energies in perturbative QCD, which can be used to construct a reference spectrum. Alternatively, it can be interpolated from measured spectra at nearby energies. We estimate the precision of both strategies for the spectra ratio relevant to the oxygen run, and conclude that the central values agree to 4% accuracy for hadrons and 2% accuracy for jets. Finally we propose taking the ratio of OO and pp spectra at different collision energies, which cleanly separates the experimental measurement and theoretical computation., Comment: 10 pages, 11 figures, v2 published version

We present the first holographic simulations of non-equilibrium steady state formation in strongly coupled $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM theory in 3+1 dimensions. We initially join together two thermal baths at different temperatures and chemical potentials and compare the subsequent evolution of the combined system to analytic solutions of the corresponding Riemann problem and to numeric solutions of ideal and viscous hydrodynamics. The time evolution of the energy density that we obtain holographically is consistent with the combination of a shock and a rarefaction wave: A shock wave moves towards the cold bath, and a smooth broadening wave towards the hot bath. Between the two waves emerges a steady state with constant temperature and flow velocity, both of which are accurately described by a shock+rarefaction wave solution of the Riemann problem. In the steady state region, a smooth crossover develops between two regions of different charge density. This is reminiscent of a contact discontinuity in the Riemann problem. We also obtain results for the entanglement entropy of regions crossed by shock and rarefaction waves and find both of them to closely follow the evolution of the energy density., Comment: 35 pages, 20 figures, comments welcome

We use holography to study the dynamics of a strongly-coupled gauge theory in four-dimensional de Sitter space with Hubble rate $H$. The gauge theory is non-conformal with a characteristic mass scale $M$. We solve Einstein's equations numerically and determine the time evolution of homogeneous gauge theory states. If their initial energy density is high compared with $H^4$ then the early-time evolution is well described by viscous hydrodynamics with a non-zero bulk viscosity. At late times the dynamics is always far from equilibrium. The asymptotic late-time state preserves the full de Sitter symmetry group and its dual geometry is a domain-wall in AdS$_5$. The approach to this state is characterised by an emergent relation of the form $\mathcal{P}=w\,\mathcal{E}$ that is different from the equilibrium equation of state in flat space. The constant $w$ does not depend on the initial conditions but only on $H/M$ and is negative if the ratio $H/M$ is close to unity. The event and the apparent horizons of the late-time solution do not coincide with one another, reflecting its non-equilibrium nature. In between them lies an "entanglement horizon" that cannot be penetrated by extremal surfaces anchored at the boundary, which we use to compute the entanglement entropy of boundary regions. If the entangling region equals the observable universe then the extremal surface coincides with a bulk cosmological horizon that just touches the event horizon, while for larger regions the extremal surface probes behind the event horizon., Comment: 45 pages, 13 figures, comments welcome

We introduce a model for heavy ion collisions named Trajectum, which includes an expanded initial stage with a variable free streaming velocity $v_{\rm fs}$ and a hydrodynamic stage with three varying second order transport coefficients. We describe how to obtain a Gaussian Emulator for this 20-parameter model and show results for key observables. This emulator can be used to obtain Bayesian posterior estimates on the parameters, which we test by an elaborate closure test as well as a convergence study. Lastly, we employ the optimal values of the parameters found in [1] to perform a detailed comparison to experimental data from PbPb and $p$Pb collisions. The understanding of heavy ion collisions and its quark-gluon plasma formation requires a complicated interplay of rich physics in a wealth of experimental data. In this work we compare for identified particles the transverse momentum dependence of both the yields and the anisotropic flow coefficients for both PbPb and $p$Pb collisions. We do this in a global model fit including a free streaming prehydrodynamic phase with variable velocity $v_\text{fs}$, thereby widening the scope of initial conditions. During the hydrodynamic phase we vary three second order transport coefficients. The free streaming velocity has a preference slightly below the speed of light. We consider a simple model of a black hole surrounded by a toroidal structure and experiencing deformation due to magnetic field and the tidal force. For this system we construct the shadows of Preston-Poisson black hole, apply it to supermassive black hole $M87^*$ and compare it with the shadows of corresponding Schwarzschild and Kerr black holes. We find that for large deviation parameters $B$ and $E$ the shadow of Preston-Poisson black hole is clearly distinguishable from Kerr black hole provided the angular resolution of measurements is of order $\mu\mathrm{arcsec}$., Comment: 11 pages, latex, 12 figures, references added

We demonstrate that oxygen-oxygen (OO) collisions at the LHC provide unprecedented sensitivity to parton energy loss in a system whose size is comparable to those created in very peripheral heavy-ion collisions. With leading and next-to-leading order calculations of nuclear modification factors, we show that the baseline in the absence of partonic rescattering is known with up to 2% theoretical accuracy in inclusive OO collisions. Surprisingly, a $Z$-boson normalized nuclear modification factor does not lead to higher theoretical accuracy within current uncertainties of nuclear parton distribution functions. We study a broad range of parton energy loss models and we find that the expected signal of partonic rescattering can be disentangled from the baseline by measuring charged hadron spectra in the range $20\,\text{GeV}

Medium induced parton energy loss is not conclusively established neither in very peripheral heavy-ion collisions nor in proton-ion collisions. However, the standard interpretation of azimuthal momentum anisotropies in theses systems implies some partonic rescattering. The upcoming light-ion runs at the LHC provide a unique opportunity to search for parton energy loss in different systems of similar size. Here, we make predictions for the expected parton energy loss signal in the charged hadron spectra in a system size scan at LHC. We test a large set of model assumptions against the transverse momentum and centrality dependence of the charged hadron nuclear modification factor in lead-lead and xenon-xenon collisions at the LHC. There is a simple bound on how fast the entanglement entropy of a subregion of a many-body quantum system can saturate in a quench: $t_\text{sat}\geq R/v_B$, where $t_\text{sat}$ is the saturation time, $R$ the radius of the largest inscribed sphere, and $v_B$ the butterfly velocity characterizing operator growth. By combining analytic and numerical approaches, we show that in systems with a holographic dual, the saturation time is equal to this lower bound for a variety of differently shaped entangling surfaces, implying that the dual black holes saturate the entanglement entropy as fast as possible. This finding adds to the growing list of tasks that black holes are the fastest at. We report on a new class of solutions of black hole accretion disks that we have found through three-dimensional, global, radiative magnetohydrodynamic simulations in general relativity. It combines features of the canonical thin, slim and thick disk models but differs in crucial respects from each of them. We expect these new solutions to provide a more realistic description of black hole disks than the slim disk model. We are presenting a disk solution for a non-spinning black hole at a sub-Eddington mass accretion rate, $\dot M=0.6\,\dot M_{\rm Edd}$. By the density scale-height measure the disk appears to be thin, having a high density core near the equatorial plane of height $h_{\rho} \sim 0.1 \,r$, but most of the inflow occurs through a highly advective, turbulent, optically thick, Keplerian region that sandwiches the core and has a substantial geometrical thickness comparable to the radius, $H \sim r$. The accreting fluid is supported above the midplane in large part by the magnetic field, with the gas and radiation to magnetic pressure ratio $\beta \sim 1$, this makes the disk thermally stable, even though the radiation pressure strongly dominates over gas pressure. A significant part of the radiation emerging from the disk is captured by the black hole, so the disk is less luminous than a thin disk would be at the same accretion rate., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures, submitted to APJ Letters

Considering the regular Bardeen black hole spacetimes, we test the observational effects of the general relativistic solutions coupled to non-linear electrodynamics (NED) by studying the photon motion in the effective geometry governed by the spacetime geometry and the NED Lagrangian. We focus our attention to the observationally important case of profiled spectral lines generated by rings radiating in a fixed frequency and orbiting the black hole along circular geodesics of the Bardeen spacetime. Such profiled spectral lines are observed in active galactic nuclei and in microquasars, giving sufficient data for the test of regular black holes. We expect that such radiating rings could arise around the Galaxy central supermassive black hole SgrA*, and the related profiled spectral lines could give important additional information to those obtained by direct observations due to the Event Horizon (GRAVITY) Telescope. We demonstrate that the profiled spectral lines of the radiating rings predict strong signatures of the NED effects on the photon motion -- namely the frequency shift to the red edge of the spectrum, and narrowing of the profile, by more than one order in comparison with the case of the profiles generated purely by the spacetime geometry, for all values of the magnetic charge and the inclination angle of the observer. The specific flux is substantially suppressed and for extended Keplerian disks even the shape of the profiled line is significantly modified due to the NED effect.

We simulate the merger of binary neutron stars and analyze the spectral properties of their gravitational waveforms. For the stars we construct hybrid equations of state (EoSs) with a standard nuclear matter EoS at low densities, transitioning to a state-of-the-art holographic EoS in the otherwise intractable high density regime. Depending on the transition density the characteristic frequencies in the spectrum produced from the hybrid EoSs are shifted to significantly lower values as compared to the pure nuclear matter EoS. Sufficiently energetic collisions of heavy ions result in the formation of a droplet of a strongly coupled liquid state of QCD matter known as quark-gluon plasma. By using gauge-gravity duality (holography), a model of a rapidly hydrodynamizing and thermalizing process like this can be constructed by colliding sheets of energy density moving at the speed of light and tracking the subsequent evolution. In this work, we consider the dual gravitational description of such collisions in the most general bulk theory with a four-derivative gravitational action containing a dynamical metric and a gauge field in five dimensions. Introducing the bulk gauge field enables the analysis of collisions of sheets which carry nonzero "baryon" number density in addition to energy density. Introducing the four-derivative terms enables consideration of such collisions in a gauge theory with finite gauge coupling, working perturbatively in the inverse coupling. While the dynamics of energy and momentum in the presence of perturbative inverse-coupling corrections has been analyzed previously, here we are able to determine the effect of such finite coupling corrections on the dynamics of the density of a conserved global charge, which we take as a model for the dynamics of nonzero baryon number density. In accordance with expectations, as the coupling is reduced we observe that after the collisions less baryon density ends up stopped at mid-rapidity and more of it ends up moving near the lightcone., Comment: v2: 40 pages, 12 figures. Whether, how, and to what extent solutions of Bjorken-expanding systems become insensitive to aspects of their initial conditions is of importance for heavy-ion collisions. Here we study 1+1D and phenomenologically relevant boost-invariant 3+1D systems in which initial conditions approach a universal attractor solution. In Israel-Stewart theory (IS) and kinetic theory where the universal attractor extends to arbitrarily early times, we show that all initial conditions approach the attractor at early times by a power-law while their approach is exponential at late times. In these theories, the physical mechanisms of hydrodynamization operational at late times do not drive the approach to the attractor at early times, and the early-time attractor is reached prior to hydrodynamization. In marked contrast, the attractor in strongly coupled systems is realized concurrent with hydrodynamization.
